WILD CAMPING? NOPE! TIME TO BAIL, NOT A FAIL! TYPICAL BRITISH WEATHER!

  • This was NOT filmed in a storm or in conditions that would warrant a weather warning. Typical British weather! It was wet and windy, and the ground wasn't suitable for pitching a tent. It was fine for hiking but not camping. Embracing the elements isn't for everyone, I understand that. I always encourage others to take responsibility for their own personal safety based on their experience and competence. As a qualified Walk Leader with military experience and Steph being an Ultra Marathon/long-distance hiker, we know our limits. At NO point were we at risk, compared to any other hike we have previously done.
I've only added this short paragraph here because some people have misconstrued the situation. This was NOT a TSUNAMI situation. Yes, wind and rain are contributing factors that present additional hazards however at NO point was this a life-threatening situation, not sure how some people have come to that conclusion, probably because they didn't watch the whole thing and made an option based on the first 30 seconds. No need for drama, Llama!
Steph and I ventured up to the Peak District in early March 2024. The weather was foul but not in a weather warning zone, so we thought we'd see what the land is like up on Hathersage Moor. The ground was totally saturated and not suitable for pitching tents. Poor visibility with strong gusts of wind, however, not cold. This was our plan B after deciding against a camp up on Kinder Scout.
When we returned to the car, we booked into a local ale house called the Maynard in Grindleford. Got an excellent deal on www.booking.com for a twin room including breakfast. It's not something we'd normally do but playing it safe and following our gut was the best choice. The following day we did a day hike up to Kinder Scout from Edale.
A good Mirco adventure despite the last-minute changes.

Hey Rachel 😊 such a gloomy day out but glad you still made the most of the walk itself. Shame the ground and wind wasn’t great for camping but definitely the best decision to bail on the wildcamp. We need more sunny days!

Great Job, Ladies. So many CZcams hikers/campers feel like they've failed when they have to call off a camp because of the weather, but you and Steph had the right attitude and just walked away with a smile when the plan(s) didn't work out. Here's hoping for sunny skies on your next Ramble. 🌞

That weather looked absolute pants and when you were on the edge, I thought you were going to jump, yes this weather is so depressing. Fair play to you both for not letting it stop you getting out, I on the other hand hate the rain and the mud, so have not been out for ages. Not a day for views or for camping to be honest, so the right call on a bail oh and nice to see it is not only me taking a fall. Loved the pose on the rocks at the end 🤣, cheers Alan

Great video. I actually like wild camping in that type of weather. I take a dry pair of socks, a pair of pyjamas and a beanie hat. It's lovely laying warm and dry in a sleeping bag in dry clothing, reading a book and listening to the rain on the tent.

Hi ya, thanks for watching and commenting. I wasn’t confident the bottom of my tent would handle the saturated ground. The surface level water caused me concern and didn’t want to wake up in a swimming pool. If I had a Hilleberg or a Tera Nova, it would have been fine, but doubt my Night Cat tent could hack it. But we had a good hike and enjoyed the experience. Onwards and upwards ☺️

    Hi Rachel.
Such a shame the weather wasn't better after driving for hours.
Glad to see you made the sensible call and didn't camp. Far too many 'youtubers' go out deliberately in those conditions just for the sake of video content.
Better luck on future adventures. 👍👍

"Far too many 'youtubers' go out deliberately in those conditions just for the sake of video content" and they didn't? Give me a break - it's one thing to be caught out by weather and another to risk injury and the safety of others called out to help if injury does occur.

What i was referring to was their decision not to camp. They made the right call to leave during daylight.
Rachel & Steph took a day hike in wet weather, nothing wrong with that.
As a former mountain rescue volunteer I have been called out many times to rescue folks who put themselves in peril by bad decision making.
I have seen far too many videos of youtubers deliberately going up mountains in stormy or freezing conditions only to have to bail in darkness when equipment fails.
Common sense is the greatest asset we have but all to often it is ignored just to make a dramatic video.

Hi Rachel loving your energy you two in this, how you are still smiling and singing when carrying all that clobber and soaking wet then slipping in the mud is beyond us so bravo to you but when you said about plan c we were both shouting at the screen saying plan c = b&b 😂 good decision! Loving your latest thumbnails! We are wishing for less rain more sun so all this mud dries up but with the increased predictions of rainfall we are not hopeful and feel we will need to adapt to these conditions in order to carry on enjoying the outdoors 😳👍 hope you are having a nice weekend!x

Hi Adam, thanks for watching. I guess we all have to gauge what we feel comfortable with at any given time. To be honest, it was rather nice staying in a local B&B in Grindleford. I wouldn't say we encountered a problem, simply made a choice not to camp and had a good hike instead. Being hunkered down in a tent for over 12 hours, without a break from the rain would have been dull. On and off rain, that's ok. Have a good week.

This is true. Being hunkered down in a tent for 12 hours due to heavy rain wasn't the plan. I don't mind rain but when its persistant and the ground is saturated, it's a different ball game all together. Thanks for watching. Have a good week. x
