Well said sir. As an engineer your narrative is spot on. I believe that the system is great and like any great systems it will depend on user and people don’t usually tell the truth because we are mostly trained to be embarrassed of failure versus learning from them and being honest with ourselves. You’ve made every point. Best spoke person regarding air suspension.

I have a question for an engineer 😅
Will there be an air suspension lift with new links bad for the air suspension? My thoughts are that the air suspension in offroad 2 will be too high, out of the max what they can normally go. Or can the suspension more that Jeep let us use?
I think about installing new links for offroad because I have a summit, and i want more ground clearance without removing something from my front pumper ..
      Greetings from Germany😁

Unlike many inferior systems, Jeep/Ram's air suspension system is quite robust. It is a "closed loop" system that does not allow moisture to intrude and cause havoc. The bags are three-layer, very hard to tear and making them perfect for offroading. The compressor got an upgrade for '14-current to deal with the "service air suspension" warnings in super cold temps. And yes, it is a nitrogen based system, which can handle swings in temperatures better than other systems. The big failures occurred on early GC on the seals of the shock tower, which is a really easy fix(multiple CZcams vids out there). It is a really good system.

2018 TH v8. Had a problem with air suspension couple months into ownership. Coincidentally it also happened to me under cold weather. Compressor replaced under Warrenty. No issues since. I’m using it off-road and like others mentioned OR1 is the preferred setting until OR2 is a must. It’s definitely more stiff but not unbearable. Love the TH and always impressed how after a long off-road trail you get on the highway and just cruise away...

2017 Trailhawk, zero issues of any kind with the entire vehicle. It's been cross country 4 times, twice towing one ton trailers, and in temps from -10 (in the Badlands National Park in December) to over 100 (here in my home state of Virginia). No issues with the suspension or anything else. It's been out in Moab, been off-roading in Idaho, and been mudding here in Virginia, no issues at all. Oh, wait, let me correct that. We did have one issue early on, a whistle from a gasket in the sunroof that got folded and pinched when it was built. Dealer replaced the entire sunroof in about 2 hours, while I waited, no charge.

I've got an overland summit with 60k miles. Noticed the front end lowered than the rear after sitting a few days. The local shop estimated the repair around $1200. I researched a few forums. Troubleshooting at home to determine it was the front QL air strut connectors that were leaking. Purchased 2 of them from RMT in FL.for $70 few days later installed the parts and problems is solved. While I was researching I found the front leveling kit at Airlinks suspension via ebay $60. Solved that problem too. Currently running 275 55 20 wildpeak AT3 tires. No rubbing at all. Overall I'm happy with the air ride suspension on & off road. It's a Jeep thing and it's in our Blood. ✌️

Thank you so much for posting this! I’m moving from South Florida to Michigan this fall and have been considering a few SUV’s over the past few months. The Jeep Grand Cherokee honestly seems like the best overall bang for your buck and now over the past month I’ve just been trying to figure out what trim level is best for me. I ultimately think I’ve decided on buying a used Overland but knew in the back of my mind that I’d most likely need to buy an extended warranty due to the air bags. This was a very cohesive well put together video that highlighted all areas of possible concern and also reassured me that this system is VERY reliable and that I’m making the right choice here. Cheers!

I would agree with the idea of replacing the system with an after market coil system if mine was to fail after warranty. I've dealt with Rocky Road Outfitters in the past for rock rails and roof rack, they are good guys and make a quality product, I'd trust them with the suspension.

Good overview Brad. I have a 2018 Overland Quadradrive and its excellent for towing and offroad. But most of us spend our time on the road as a daily driver. Thus the air suspension is ideal to provide an excellent lift when off road. I wouldn't want to drive daily on the highway with a permanent 2.5" lift. It would drastically change the enjoyment of the JGC vehicle. That's the benefit of the air suspension. Thanks.

Excellent video, Brad. I don't do Facebook, and so I'll comment here, and also ask you a few questions. My 2015 GC 4x4 Overland Diesel w/ QuadraDrive II and Quadralift has only about 57K miles on it. Quadralift has been occasionally quirky, mostly in extremely cold temperatures. It is regularly taken off road on demanding trails in northern Michigan near our Cabin on the Manistee River. A couple of buddies and I managed to get severely stuck last Saturday (in 4-Lo and Offroad 2 height), and so we had to use my shovel, all 4 recovery boards, a come-a-long wire rope winch, hi-lift jack, and heavy tow chain to get out. An electric winch would have been nice, but probably would not have been usable on the front end of the WK2 in the spot where we got stuck. (A winch that could be portably installed into a front "tow hitch style receiver" and also wired to be usable in the rear tow hitch receiver would be ideal in my book, as I am usually traveling solo offroad.) I like the versatility on-road and off-road that you describe in this Quadralift video -- I have had very similar experiences. Our place in northern MIchigan is about a 2-1/2 hour mostly expressway drive from our home in Southwestern Michigan, and the benefits of driving at 80+ mph on the more remote northern sections of expressway are felt very clearly in my "luxury" WK2. When I had to take my GC in for an EGR recall last week, the dealer lent me a new Gladiator. Despite the longer wheelbase, the ride in the Gladiator felt like I was driving a beachball down the expressway, and I had to constantly correct the steering while doing about 75 mph (with a 20 mph crosswind). That would start to become fatiguing on any ride longer than an hour, and this does NOT happen in my WK2 with the Quadralift suspension. I have also researched the Rocky Road/Old Man Emu conventional spring replacement system (for when my Quadralift eventually goes out). I find that with all my additional bash plates (factory skid plates, Mopar Rocksliders, Chief Products Sump Protection Plate and Lower Front Guard, slightly larger/heavier than factory 31-1/2" Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, the possible addition of a winch plate and the winch itself, plus a few other protective bits and pieces) all of that extra weight will be a huge factor when trying to dial in appropriate spring rates, lift height, etc. once a replacement is in order. I am presently considering adding the Chief Products hidden winch mounting plate system along with a 10,000 lb Warn Zeon synthetic rope winch, but I am very concerned about the added weight this will incur on what has already become a rather heavy vehicle. I would be interested to find out anyone's experience with replacing Quadralift with conventional-style metal springs on a very heavy WK2 build, e.g., Diesel, with lots of extra stuff that adds a lot of weight. Also, whether the Rocky Road/Old Man Emu metal spring system would be compatible with all of the aforementioned Chief Products items. (Sorry for this waaaay too long comment, but I wanted to get it all in, rather than send it to you piecemeal.)

The dealer told me it needs a strong car battery, over a quarter tank of gas and the doors must be locked before trying to remote start. I've done all those things and it still won't start. The owner's manual doesn't mention any of those things so not sure if the dealership's mechanic knows what the heck he's doing.

While we haven't been off-roading with it yet (still learning how it works) the system is flawless. As always, Brad, very informative video. One comment from me: you and I have discussed situations where and when the Quadralift air suspension gets "quirky"; e.g. either will not immediately -key word- raise or lower but does so/responds after a certain, usually very short, period of time. In other words, it fixes itself.
For example, after my flat tire on my JGCTH's first off-roading trip to Rausch Creek in PA, and the change with the spare tire, it would not lower...but it did so after about twenty minutes or so. You added your own similar experience(s).

Cold air condenses, seals also shrink in colder temps. This is why they use nitrogen as the main fill gas, as it doesn’t fluctuate as much under temperature changes. The pump is majorly for moving the gas around the system and then filling potential lost volume that escapes during temp fluctuations and heavy bumps. I have a 2012 and have only needed to replace seals on the front towers.

The main reason they use nitrogen is because it contains no moisture. Air has lots of moisture. And moisture freezes in cold temps, causing the compressor to freeze up.

2011 Overland GC. Got it used about 7 years ago. Lift system got a hole in an airline right after I bought it. Lots of issues since then. Warranty covered around $8000 in repairs. Ended up being a $15 relay. Trouble free for the last 5 years. 180,000+ miles currently and lots of problems again. Replaced 1 air shock with a remanufactured unit. Spent about $500 with install. That wasn't the problem. O rings were leaking. Cheap and easy diy fix. Probably need to replace rear air shocks next. Aftermarket is cheap for these and the rear units are easy to replace yourself. Love my GC even though it's been in the shop every 2 months. Now cylinder deactivation has rounded the cam and I am going to have to put in a rebuilt engine. Got a Diablo chip and deactivated the cylinder deactivation. Wish I had known about that a couple years ago. Would have saved my engine.

Mine is a 2020 North edition wk2 equipped with qt2, skid plates, tow package and off road pages among other options. After much research I decided against the air suspension because it would add about five grand to the purchase price as bundled. My choice was to install the Rough Country 2.5” lift combined with 32 inch tires on the stock 8”x18” wheels. These easy modifications increased the static ride height by 3.25 inches for a ground clearance measurement of 11.75 inches. After the required four wheel alignment, driving dynamics were NOT noticeably changed. There was no degradation in ride quality, suspension compliance or wheel travel. However, i have experienced a ten percent reduction in highway fuel economy. As a long term owner, one, I saved substantially on the purchase price and two, Ive avoided potential expensive repairs in the future.

I think that after using 1 jeep with ql and 1 jeep without ql for a few years, I see its benefit for the grand cherokee. I think i wouldnt want to daily drive it as a lifted vehicle and compromise the handling of this very luxurious jeep, but a lift sure is nice to have sometimes. A stiff ride is worth putting up with in these cases for me. It adds to the swiss army knife appeal that drew me to the vehicle. My biggest complaint is perhaps my own fault: that I added some really stiff tires to my wk2 (2013 overland with ql). They are light truck tires. LT275/55R20. I have found that the combination of a stiff tire with my ql is really not good on the road in normal ride height. The suspension is really soft while the tires are stiff so when i hit asphalt bumps on some corners i have seen really dangerous behavior from the jeep. It will completely change direction without input. Same dangerous behaviors on loamy backroads or potholes in gravel. For this reason i run gravel roads in offroad level 1 which makes most of this behavior more tolerable. Im hoping it doesnt put me in a ditch one day on the asphalt. I am definitely changing my tire selection for the next set. I also saw a safety test of the early wk2 (stock) which it failed horribly (moose test) and the later jeeps handled it better, so this could be a natural characteristic of my jeep coming out due to the stiff tires. My wifes jeep has none of these behaviors (spring suspension 2014 wk2 limited with xl rated stock size nitto tg g2s). My review of quality is maybe surprising. No issues with the ql at all in 75k miles on the overland, however we did have bushings fail and started to hear a noticeable clunk in the front of the limited jeep with standard suspension at 80k which in my opinion seems premature. As an engineer, I think 10% is an alarming and unacceptable failure rate for the ql system... hoping mine holds up for the long run.

I did have a few little issues with it acting up and becoming unlevel from front to back or not responding to the selecter. But usually just shutting off the Jeep and restarting it would reset that. I didn't have any mechanical failure in about 65,000 miles of driving.
During general on road or gravel road driving it wasn't a bad system and road fairly smoothly. I liked that I could lower it for people who had problems getting into a higher height seat. However, going at speed if I'd hit a big dip that would cause full rebound, it would have a very hard stop to the suspension droop, much harsher than other vehicles. I don't think it was really damaging anything, but it certainly felt like it was much harder than it should have been and should be a little more cushioned.
My biggest gripe about the system is when you put it in one of the raised positions. Even off-road 1. The suspension really behaves opposite what it should do for its height goals. When you're on the road, and especially at higher speeds when it drops another half inch, you want a car with a little stiffer suspension for better handling. When your off-road, you want a soft compliant suspension so it can conform to the train and keep traction and not beat the crap out of you. The QL unfortunately does the opposite. The lower you put it, the softer it becomes, and the higher you put it, the harder it becomes (nature of air bags) to the point where it's so stiff there's practically no compliance and it's both a very harsh uncomfortable ride, and any uneven terrain at all and at least one wheel is lifting off the ground. Honestly, I hated the system for off-roading.
This is why it make me so mad that they only offer that QL system for the Trailhawk. I'm currently looking at getting another smaller or midsize SUV that I can go off-roading with, and that knocks Grand Cherokee out of my list because I don't want that system. Even if I get another Overland, that's the only suspension offered for it. But I want the amenities like the adaptive cruise control and ventilated seats, but I can't get those options in the lower trim levels that don't have the QL suspension. So I'm considering a regular Cherokee Trailhawk that can be loaded with all the amenities. And it has a raised, more off-road worthy suspension and a true, mechanical locking rear diff. I think it was a really bad idea for Jeep to come out with a trail focused Grand Cherokee and then put the QL suspension in it. They should have stayed with a more traditional but lifted and more rugged suspension.
Overall I'd say it's a great system for just on road or light off-road trails. But if you're looking to do anything more rugged, then maybe consider other options.

This is precisely the issue i've been so badly disappointed with my JGC EcoDiesel with QL.. I thought it would be an especially off road capable machine. However this past weekend I took it out on a local trail only to find it is quite the opposite due to the QL system. As soon as I traveled at speeds over 5mph, the suspension would bottom out extremely hard.. so much so that my passengers were not having a good time. Such a bummer!

On 2019, bought a pristine 2012 GC Overland Summit at 52K miles for a great price, but did not buy an extended warranty at the time. 2 weeks later suspension was "low-rider". Took to dealership and was charged $1750 for leaking front left strut and $3300 for compressor that burned out trying to compensate for leak (I wish they had better visual warnings about compressor overuse!!)
Now at 123K still working, but getting intermittent "service air suspension" lights, which I suspect are an electrical issue, HOPEFULLY.

Then you won't have to come out of pocket for repairs. Regarding air suspension related issues. However if you don't. Be prepared to spend a lot on repairs. In the last 5 years. I've had compressor issues and strut issues. My Solution to these issues. Were to just take out the air struts and put on. Regular standard shocks and struts.

I just bought a 2011 WK2 Overland with the QuadraLift system and tonight it started giving me errors and overheating codes. Which is why I've been digging through your old videos trying to learn the most I can about the system. I love the ability to change ride height, something I needed with my lifted WK that nearly took out my tiny garage. I do know that if I cannot fix the system I will have to skip to lifting it and adding 33's like the WK has.

    • @ekummel
      @ekummel Před rokem +1

If it's overheating, it could mean that there's a leak in the lines. The compressor is continuously running trying to keep the shocks pumped up but can't because of a leak. This is very common due to the o-rings sealing on the air lines deteriorating. You can get replacement fittings with new o-rings in them on Amazon for under $60 a pair. Replacing them is a super simple process and just needs to wrenches. There's plenty of people on CZcams showing how they replaced it. Once the airlines are sealed, the compressor will stop running when the shocks are at the set height.

@@ekummel thank you, the might be some stress to it. But I actually discovered the problem, and another at the same time. My lift wasn't working because I checked the wrong fuse "don't have a friend read you the diagram" and the sound I thought was the pump running was the front fan rubbing against the cover to the radiator hose as the clip broke that was holding it barely between the fan and pulley system. It whined like I thought a mini compressor would if it were overloaded.

The only thing I don’t like is the inability to override auto settings. Example, in Sand mode it self adjusts the lift to normal ride height. At the beach, with deep ruts and soft sand, I would prefer to fine tune the height a bit up to avoid the bottom scooping up sand. I understand it may be for dune running and you want to have some stability when going fast but not everyone has dunes to blaze through. Other than that, it is very well executed.
