4:35~4:48 *Wrong!* What allows you to use the move in the Overworld is the *badge,* not the HM. The HM is simply a device to teach the move to Pokemon capable of learning it. So yes, your traded Lapras that knows Surf would indeed be able to save you in this situation.
This happens if you don't talk to Norman after beating him, where he mentions that Wally's parents came in earlier looking for the player, cause they have something to give to the player, that being the hm surf.
Actually, Surf can be used without the HM in your bag.
How? If you don't have badge yet or a mon that knows?
@@PokemonParadise2010no this is about the hypothetical scenario that you have the balance badge and that you trade in a Pokémon from another cartridge that knows surf. If those 2 conditions are fulfilled, then yes, the Pokémon can use surf outside of battle
@@zinniaq3020 I wa swondering too cuz I had such a scenario in gen 2 where I used to have a pokemon traded that knows an HM tha tI was unable to use yet due to lack of badges rather then not owning the HM for it.
@@Evilriku13 that as how I accessed the truck at the SS Anne. I traded a Pokémon that knew cut over so that I wouldn’t need to retrieve the HM. As such, the ship will not sail away
@@zinniaq3020 I checked the MS Anne rumors out by letting myself get beaten up before leaving the ship but after getting HM01 so the ship wont leave the port up until I reenter it but not when I reenter the port, hence being able to surf and rod around there and checking said oninous truck.
It's stuff like this why I never use Teleport regularly.

AS LONG AS you didn't use the Dewford Town Pokemon Center, you can escape this area by deliberately KO'ing all your Pokemon via fishing or Granite Cave (or using Teleport). This will return you to the last Pokemon Center you used. This issue is based on specifically saving and quitting and using the town's center. You can run into similar issues with Pacifidlog Town, lots of softlocking happens there.
In Mr.Briney's defense, you're the one who went and rubbed a genie that sent you all the way to Dewford. He is probably sailing his cruise ship without any clue that you are stranded. Oh and btw, I subbed because I enjoyed your video and the quality is great for a channel that just started out.

You can use surf with the lapras you dont need to hold the hm. it just needs to know it.
Actually, Mr. Briney stops giving rides once you open the tunnel linking Petalburg and Mauville Cities.
You are right that there’s a way you can’t escape, but you are wrong as to how.
You can use Surf without the HM in your bag. It’s having the corresponding Gym Badge (in Hoenn, the Balance Badge) that lets you use the HM outside of battle. However, there are a number of other ways to softlock yourself on Dewford in Ruby and Sapphire as well. For example if you beat all trainers, grab every item and buy enough items that you cannot buy anything (standard procedure for a softlock), there is no way of making money. And if your only Pokemon has all four available HMs that you can have at the time of beating Norman on it (Cut, Rock Smash, Flash, Strength), then you cannot forget a move to make room for Surf, even if you have it. And since it’s your only pokemon, the game doesn’t let you trade pokemon with anyone if you only have one pokemon. And since you have no way of making money to buy pokeballs, even if you can fish up a magikarp, you can’t catch it and level it to evolve it into Gyarados and give it Surf.

Good to know it's a scenario I'd only run into if I used Teleport, which I never do. The only time I saw Dewford Town without Mr. Briney, I already made sure to have either Surf or Fly ready so I could move where I wanted to.
If you go with the benefit of the doubt, he stops giving you rides and takes on a new job after he hears you’ve earned the badge that allows you to surf.
You couldn't even buy Pokeballs in Dewford to capture something, right? I have a memory of frantically searching for a shop only to realize there are none on the island. Or at least I don't remember where it is.
So we can’t really blame Abra though for teleporting? 🤔because it refuses to teleport us back to other locations once we get stuck on the Island and I believe the old Man and his Wingul have already helped us enough by offering us free boat rides long into the playthrough and I wish him the best for actually finding a job he enjoys and I will always be thankful for helping us 🤗
This is why I always go by Meteor Falls on the way back to Petalburg. Not only is it a guarantee that i get to where im going under my own power but i also gives me the chance to scope out a fossil to revive in Rustboro City.

I always kind of wondered if Briney was originally meant as a Master Roshi reference that got reskinned to make it less overt. Like, instead of a tiiiiiny boat you go inside, it was originally a turtle you rode on top of. And instead of chasing a Wingull around his table it was like, a Gardevoir or something. 😅
Your game isn’t stuck. Just trade a Pokémon that knows surf from fire red, leaf green, ruby or sapphire ❤ you were incorrect about using surf in the over world. You just need the badge

You can get out via having your team faint off the caves pokemon unless you decided (for some reason) to heal when you got there

@@Jac-io6de Not necessarily. According to Bulbapedia, you need to enter a Pokemon Center for Teleport to use it as a destination. So per the video, theoretically you could use the Pokemon Center in Dewford, go to battle Norman for his Gym Badge, then _(without obtaining the HM)_ Teleport straight back to Dewford and Mr. Briney is no longer present (because, apparently he vanishes after receiving badge #5 at which point, normal circumstances you also have the HM for Surf but is not strictly checked for).

unless you went into the pokemon center you can just make your pokemon faint then you get teleported to the last center you visited
Teleport and blacking out both send you to the last Pokemon Center you visited, so if teleporting leads to Dewford, then so will losing a battle.

As soon as you leave the petalburg gym, there's a cutscene where you are given surf. It's impossible to not get it.
So that's why they decided to hand you surf unlike in ruby and saphire. I love the quality of life changes they made in emerald. There were always some minor things that annoyed me about ruby and saphire. But emerald? I loved it to death.
I might be crazy, but I feel like there is an NPC in the Pokemon Center that gifts you a surfing Pokemon if this happens. I swear I've seen that somewhere.
That would be in GSC, where if you have no other Pokémon that can use surf someone in cianwood will give you a tentacool.
@@Stinkoman87 HG/SS, actually. That didn't happen in the originals, so you could potentially get stuck in those games. And in HG/SS, if you deliberately release the Tentacool, you'll be given another one.
