  • This was a service call on a set of reach in freezers that were not working at all, I found the system had a bad circuit breaker and a shorted out drain line heater.

Good fix, as always. FYI, since that was an actual double pole breaker and it says on the side it said "common trip" you need to close both switches at the same time. Since the tie bar was missing and you were only closing one pole at a time you could hear it trip free, that's why it was easy and didn't sound right. Once you pulled it out and opened and closed both poles together it sounded much different, more solid. But, regardless, the breaker was cracked so good call on replacing it. Also not a bad idea to exercise the breakers like you did, but in an old panel like that make sure you're not doing it on a Friday night when the supply houses are closed. I am sure you have shut off a breaker to only have it not close again, I know you know this, just putting that out there for the next guy.

I see that sometimes in the field.

The pain oooooo the pain..... I got shocked by 480 because the owner forgot I was working on the system. So she just turned it on even though I put red tape over it. She said she was sorry, she thought i had left. She has bad memory. The worst shock of my life, but I'm kind of glad it happened. I had a second chance to change my life around. Because now, I locked everything out and remove fuses. I will never take that chance again. To anybody out there that works on electricity everyday, it just takes one sick person to kill or maim you for life. Then under your insurance policy it states did you lock it out. They look at it after you died. NO!!!! So your policy does not apply. NOW YOUR FAMILY ARE SO DOOMED, NO LIFE INSURANCE. Look at your insurance fine print it's in there. The only Clause that you might be able to get around if you locked out a other source by accident.

That breaker was no good, whether it was good or not, both phases should shut off instantly if there is a a short, one on and one off would damage the equipment it's servicing.

Here in europe it is not legal to connect a flexible power cord (containing many small copper wires) directly to a breaker. You have to use a clamp like you snipped off. Maybe code is different where you work.

Not to speak out of turn, but you really should take your ring off before working near any electrical wiring or contacts, especially in that evaporator with the broken heater. Beyond the possibility of arc flash or a spot weld that you might not be able to break, you'll lose your finger if the heat cauterizes the blood vessels and nerves feeding it!

The only Clause that you might be able to get around if you locked out a other source by accident. Please put lockout on you videos to help are young apprentices to remember. You could save someone's life just for a few seconds. Most guys have had very mild shocks. They really do not understand how bad it can be. Imagine losing the use of your hands. Guys in this trade treat it like an art, and it is it's kind of fun. But so so dangerous. Water, oil, gas, etc........ all mixing with high voltage. The complacency bug will bite you. If you cannot see the disconnect from where you're working lock it out remove the wires or the fuses don't trust anybody even your partner. We all have bad days...............
