This was the year before personalised driver numbers, before which had the car numbers based on where the team finished in the constructors the previous year (unless the driver's champion switched teams, or the champion driver was driving for a different team than the constructors winners, which is rare) so the constructors champions would have numbers 1 and 2, the runners up would have 3 and 4 and so on.
