Otakárek fenyklový - The Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon)
Otakárek fenyklový je denní motýl z čeledi otakárkovití (Papilionidae). Patří mezi nejkrásnější a největší denní motýly ČR a je zde evidován jako zvláště chráněný druh.
Popis
Dospělec:
- Rozpětí křídel: 7-9 cm
- Délka předního křídla: 40-50 mm
Žlutá křídla s černými žilkami a zadní křídla obou pohlaví mají dvojici vyčnívajících ocasů, které připomínají ocas vlaštovky.
Ve spodní části křídel je jedno červené a šest modrých skvrn.
Housenka:
- Délka: 45 mm (v dospělosti až 10 cm)
Postupně mění barvu. Nejprve je černá s červenou kresbou (napodobuje ptačí trus), později je zelená, s černými pruhy a oranžovými tečkami.
Výskyt
Celý Palearkt (Evropa, Asie i Severní Amerika).
Louky a lesní světliny, hory a zahrady, stepy a lesostepy, raně sukcesní plevelová společenství opuštěných polí.
V poledne jich bývá více na vyvýšeném místě v okolí
Částečný migrant, migrující jedinci překonávají i nejvyšší horské polohy.
Život
Samci a samice se setkávají na vyvýšených bodech v terénu - tzv. hilltoping.
Samice kladou vajíčka jednotlivě na živné rostliny, nejčastěji do okolíků.
Má dvougenerační vývoj, v teplých oblastech tři generace, které na sebe navazují (duben - říjen).
Housenky bývají sedentární, starší jsou aposematicky zbarvené.
Při ohrožení zaujímá obranný postoj s vystrčenou oranžovou vidličkou a vylučuje páchnoucí výměšek.
Dospělá housenka se zakuklí ke stonkům živných rostlin, či jinde, kukly poslední generace přezimují.
Čas na vylíhnutí motýla z kukly závisí na teplotě. V teple stačí 1 až 2 týdny. Nízké teploty mohou zastavit vývoj až na několik měsíců, do doby dosažení teplejšího počasí.
Motýl přezimuje v podobě kukly.
V severních oblastech se vyvíjí pouze jedna generace, na jihu 2 až 3. Druhá generace jednoho roku se liší od první sytějším zbarvením a žlutě poprášenými černými elementy kresby na křídlech.
Housenky se živí listy různých miříkovitých (okoličnatých) rostlin zvláště mrkve, fenyklu, bedrníku, kopru, kmínu a petržele.
Motýl preferuje raně sukcesní stadia rostlin například na polních kulturách (kmínu, fenyklu apod.), opuštěných polích nebo výsypkách. Druh vytváří mozaiku různě specializovaných populací či “potravních ras”, jež jsou v odlišných prostředích přizpůsobeny k životu na jednotlivých druzích či skupinách druhů okoličnatých rostlin.

Papilio machaon, the Old World swallowtail, is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. It is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or the swallowtail.
Description
Adult:
- Wingspan: 65-86 mm (2.6-3.4 in)
Yellow wings with black vein markings, and a the hindwings of both sexes have a pair of protruding tails which resembles a swallow's tail.
Just below each tail is one red and six blue eye spots.
Caterpillar:
- Length: 45 mm (1.8 in)
When young, the caterpillar resembles a bird dropping, giving it camouflage.
First it is black with a red pattern, later it is green, with black stripes and orange dots.
Distribution
The entire Palearctic region (Europe, Asia and North America).
It frequents alpine meadows - up to 16,000 ft (4,900 m) - and hillsides.
Males are fond of 'hilltopping', congregating near summits to compete for passing females. At lower elevations, it can be seen visiting gardens.
Life
The butterfly has a strong and fast flight, but frequently pauses to hover over flowering herbs and sip nectar.
It mostly feeds on plants of family Umbelliferae, females laying eggs singly.
The food plants consists of a wide variety of umbellifers including wild carrot, wild angelica, fennel, hogweeds and rue.
At lower elevations, these butterflies fly from March to September; at higher elevations, they are limited by the short summer seasons.
Breeding
There are usually 2 to 3 broods in a year, but in northern areas, the species may be univoltine. In some places some will pupate and emerge in the same year and others will overwinter as pupae before emerging the following year (it means they are partially bivoltine).
Caterpillars will spend their time eating or resting before they resume their eating again. Once a sufficient size has been attained, they will attach themselves to any available structure and stay still until they become pupae (it takesabout a day).
It has an osmeterium - a defense against predators - which consists of retractable, fleshy projections behind its head that can release a foul smell if disturbed.
The time the butterfly takes to form depends on the temperature. In warm temperatures, it will take about 1 or 2 weeks to form. In low temperature it might take several months.
