The Legion of the Damned is a mysterious band of Space Marines which appears unbidden when all hope seems lost, striding forth from its hidden netherworld in the Immaterium to bring retribution to the Imperium's foes.
Once their bloody work is complete the Legionaries vanish into myth once more. They are a legend, whispered in secret by a suspicious few, that the Emperor has the loyalty of a force from beyond reality.
The Legion is an army of vengeance and of flame, a brotherhood of warriors who appear at first glance to be Space Marines but quickly prove to be more lethal than even those most formidable of transhuman warriors. These warriors are variously said to dwell in the spaces between reality and the realm of the Warp, in the hopes and dreams of desperate men, and in a pocket of reality eternally lit by the fires of hatred.
Rare is the person that has witnessed the sudden violence of their attack, rarer still those with the strength of will to keep their sanity intact afterwards.

    Things Bricky missed:
-Legion of the Dammed are also assumed to be the remnants of the Drop Site Massacre
-The Emperor summoned them in the webway
-Ultramarine attempted to thank an Legionarie of the Dammed for saving them, it stared at him in silence. The Ultramarine noticed the distinct blue, gold and white of a Ultramarine.
-When the Cadian Pylons where activated, it forced Celestine and the Legion back into the warp

I always thought the Firehawks became part of the Legion but didn't create the Legion itself, all the coffins proved is the chapter was lost in the warp. Master of Mankind has a legion of the damned being led by (presumably) the spirit of Ferrus Manus saving the fight in the webway after Big E stabbed the air with his sword and ripped open a portal. IMO their souls are in Big E's part of the warp as he owns their souls (similar to Slaanesh and the Eldar souls) and they are his minor demons with the living Saints being his greater demons. The Emperor seems to be the Chaos God of order and during the seige of Terra even discussed 'fixing' the problem of Ferras' death with Malcadore, which (alongside the webway fight) makes it seem like he already owned and could control Ferras' soul, he just needed to craft a new vessel for his soul to inhabit.

The best theory I've heard explaining the Legion of the Damned is that, like how Celestine is essentially a Greater Daemon of the God-Emperor, the Legion of the Damned are his Lesser Daemons. It explains how these guys can just show up out of the blue when the situation is at its worst (just like how Astartes are said to do in stories) and seemingly do this all over the god damn galaxy at almost the same time. I was always under the impression that the Legion of the Damned were basically Imperial demons/warp entities like Saint Celestine and the reason that they show up right when the situation is most desperate to save the day is because the prayers to the emperor are the most numerous when the battle is about to be lost. The mass simultaneous chorus of prayers to Big E allows them to manifest similar to how a chaos ritual can summon demons. The Legion then disappears when the tide of battle turns toward victory for the Imperium because the mass prayers for salvation have stopped; cutting off the mass psychic tether allowing them to enter into our dimension. Anyways, that’s the way I see it so I am rejecting your reality and substituting my own.

    More lore? You know it!
There's some links to the Legion being the Emperor's work, some of this coming from the Emperor's battle with the extremely powerful demon known as Drach'nyen (which is currently Abaddon's blade)
The Emperor hunted the thing through the webway himself during the Heresy. When the Golden Throne was turned on for the first time his psychic powers went into overcharge, and he marched forth with an army of golden spectres, bearing the insignias of the legions that had suffered at the hands of the traitors during the drop site massacre (one was even said to look like Ferrus)
Now if we consider the Emperor's been getting all that charge from millennia of worship, it's fair to assume he's been able to regain this power in some capacity but has more instinctive, or less direct control over it in some capacity

as add-on to this theory; as they are still labeled as a legion, couldn't they have added into their ranks every dead Astartes killed since the Heresy, leading to the irrelevance of an emblem, other than to mark that "they were there."

Personally, I think the idea of the Legion of the Damned as just sufferers of a warp disease to be underwhelming. For one, it means they're doomed to eventually all die, which is lame. Second, it makes them more mundane. We don't need to wonder what they are, because they explained it. At least in this theory.
i prefer just treating the Legion of the Damned as straight up warp ghosts. They're space marines that died or were lost during warp travel, but refused to fade away. So they were inducted into the brotherhood of spooky ghost marines, to fight the enemies of mankind eternally. I also like the idea that they can be any space marines, not just from any one chapter.
Moreover, I think the idea of the "Warp Ghost" could easily be extended to any faction, not just space marines. Like flame-wreathed Imperial Knights (my "House Goetia" concept I proposed in the comments of a different episode), or zombie/skeleton/ghost Guardsmen.
And I don't even have the energy to get into my Star Geist idea. This is a rich vein to mine.

The Tau little guy needs to have mini text "Pew Pew" coming from their guns.
42:35 - The Tau, some of the Eldar and a number of worlds who rebelled against the Imperium in the face of the awful and deplorable tithing/working/living conditions and formed their own government (which is probably most of the Imperium Nihilus right now that didn't have a Space Marine chapter nearby, since the Astronomicon's light can't reach them anymore and they are on their own).
Frankly it's the perfect setting for a game with the Tau a protagonist. You start in the Nem'yar Atoll and have to invest in the Air Caste to establish actual transport routes out there, Water Caste to win over stranded Imperium Worlds, Earth Caste to build them up and the Fire Caste because "Oh crap the Death Gaurd!"

You know I think it’d be pretty cool if the legion started as the remnants of the fire hawks but as time went on the souls of any loyalist marine that died fighting chaos had a chance to be taken in by the legion of the damnned

  • @1990loulou
    @1990loulou Před rokem +7

    I have 2 theories.
1st. The Legion of the Damned is one of the Two lost/erased Legions but they are still loyal to the Emperor
2nd. The Legion of the Damned are all gaurdsmen and Astartes that have died and because the Emperor has nearly become a Chaos god himself through Humanity's worship and they are in essence his own forces revived by the Emperor's power in the warp

Just imagine: entire regiments of krieger waiting to charge and die other other again, shovels ready.
Cadians wanting revenge against the black legionnaires and failbadons.
And so much more angry humans waiting in line to get a shot against thèse who wronged them. X)
