How to Replace a High Pressure Fuel Pump

  • With the goal to increase efficiency and lower emissions, cars nowadays are switching from PFI, Port Fuel Injection, to DI, Direct Injection. Due to the nature of DI being a newer system, and the fuel system needing to create very high PSI across the fuel rail, we will be seeing countless new cars requiring replacement HPFP (high pressure fuel pumps). MINI has already seen noticed their flawed system in the first generation R56 N14 engine, and made changes to the revised and more reliable N18 engine. With that being said, replacing the high pressure fuel pump is not a difficult task, however it is something that will need to be done on newer cars.
My HPFP has been giving me problems, where it does like cold starts, and it doesn’t allow me to go past half throttle. Those are generally the symptoms of a HPFP failing, which is why I am swapping it out for a new one in this video.
I usually get my MINI parts from ECS Tuning, but I found something that seems like a better option. If you are looking to purchase a new HPFP, or other replacement parts for your german car, AND you plan on keeping your vehicle for awhile, check out the website FCP Euro. If you purchase ANYTHING from their website, engine oil, brake pads, a HPFP, or anything else, and it fails / you need a replacement, they will warranty it FOR LIFE!!! I genuinely don’t know how they stay in business with that kind of business model, but from the consumer end of it, it gives you peace of mind knowing that after you replace a part, you are covered for life. That is where I purchased my HPFP. I didn’t want to spend $1250 more than once on a single part on my car. Just for a reference, look at the price difference between both websites for the HPFP. The FCP HPFP comes with a lifetime warranty where the ECS does not, AND it costs more.. its a no brainer…

I love that you did your homework for working on this part:
    - you mentioned recall info, that’s hugely important for maintaining your vehicle
    - likewise you mentioned that doing your research for the part and noticing that the car wasn’t getting enough fuel to provide also was mentioned and was a good indicator.
My only recommendation is look for the high pressure fuel pump relay or fuse. Pull that first and foremost! The reasoning behind this is yes, though the rags will help, pulling the relay will stop sending the unit fuel anywhere to the fuel rail or even the engine. Once it starts to stall then go for the pump as it will be slightly easier and you’re not messing with the added 800 pounds of pressure from the fuel being sent to the rail. Besides that awesome video!!!! I love seeing people get down and dirty and working on their cars whenever possible because it’s the most intricate piece of engineering and if you master this, every other car will become slightly easier in my opinion!

The high pressure fuel pump is the same as the Citroen Peugeot engine and are sold to Mini at a markup that you then pay if you buy a “genuine” mini one. I learned this while I worked at a mini dealership in California and when it came time to change the pump on my N14 2012 R56 I saved hundreds and the pump works great
Edit for anyone that didn’t know that the N14 is a “Prince” engine and shares components across brands. Mini/BMW charges extra because they can

Ante Vučetić both links in the description have it around $950 usd. That being said these have always been in that price range in the states when we are stuck buying the genuine ones. Companies are finally getting their hands on the psa ones for about half the price but unfortunately the market and sourcing the parts dictates what us the customers have to pay and what’s available...

Got slk250 there is not much on CZcams about how to change the high pressure fuel pump somehow I got to your video , nice description and clear how to fix it . I wish my pump is so easy to access!!! I just did mine it’s at the back of the engine ,after 5 h nightmare scratched bloody hands all over I replaced it but car is worse than before!! I Bought a part on Amazon , pump sucks so yes buy original part not replacement no brand parts , now I have to remove it which probably takes another 3 h since i know how to do it now it might take less than 5 h . I just ordered new part from Mercedes which cost 3 x more than the one I got on Amazon, there is bunch of fuel pumps seems like from same seller under different names because description is same pictures same etc. pump was scratched on side like it was used before and primed out with screwdriver .
My new pump gets here delivered in 8 days in local Mercedes and labor costs around $900 to put the pump on. Just changed pulley myself for $25 they wanted to charge me $460 !! But for the fuel pump might have to leave it to them with all the computers it’s all complicated.. before I changed the fuel pump car was driving ok in limp mode low rpm the engine light was off that’s why I didn’t see it when I bought the car 3 days before I noticed the fuel pump is bad , but yesterday I changed the pump from Amazon and car drive 300 feet and die turn off by itself when slow down to turn or stop on intersection!!! I gonna try to put back the previous one if it drives the same as before i can put the OEM myself but if it’s still staling I have to let the Mercedes do it for around $2000

It cost 3x more but it works!!! I tried to drive on sport mode rough to red rpm and still fine no engine light on !!! I just changed it 5 h ago so I give it more days but thanks for recommending the European company with life time warranty because Mercedes website offers only 1 year!!!
Your car sounds great what did you do to your exhaust? I got Mercedes Slk250 and it’s too quiet need louder car because people with bigger cars can’t see me almost got hit by suv today lady didn’t see me was turning to my line 🤷🏽‍♂️⛔️💣

Mini fans. I have a RCZ R, 270hp(stock), with THP 1.6. There was a rev2 from Peugeot on this exact pump(that broke on my at 90.000km). Perhaps try and get the rev2, if BMW also has a newer version. Hope this helps

Nekminute can’t argue with that. The minis BMW 1 Seris and Citroën’s have similar problems. The 270BHP seems to be alright when driven hard and maintained well though

Problem is, FPC giving lifetime warranty, what happens when business shuts shop in a few years. No replacement

What failed on the pump ? And if it's a common issue surely it's a better idea to buy an upgraded one if of course they exist 😎🤔👍

May sound like a dumb comment but it’s possible to change the hpfp without draining the fuel out the system?! Just as long as you leave it a while after driving right.
And is this the same with ever cars hpfp?

Sweet, wish I had this video the first time I swapped HPF pumps. That low pressure fuel line is a bit of a bitch.

My mechanic said (when I replaced my HPFP) that you should replace the lines going and coming from it just to be safe.

If they haven't been replaced before, yes you should. I didn't do the second torque sequence to the nuts on the line after building my engine, which means mine was good. I've driven the car since this video and its running great with no leaks, but that is a good idea.
