You wave at it when your hands are dirty...OR your hands a full and you want to put something else in the microwave...i used it all the time.
You’re right. Dirty/full hands is a great reason for the wave to open function. ❤️

Thank you for such an informative video. Can I do flush mount the bottom one on a 24 inch cabinet or would I need a bigger cabinet? If so, what is the smallest size cabinet that can accommodate flush mount of the bottom microwave.

What are the differences between the Sharp SMD2480 vs SMD2489? I did a quick search and they look identical but couldn't find any notes on what separates them.
We were told the 89 was just a slightly updated version of the 80.
We have the SMD2489ES - one issue with it is that the control panel does not appear to be back-lit [at least our's isn't]..... only the mini-display is back-lit, not the text and numbers so, in the dark, you really can't see any of the controls - quite pesky.
i am looking to find a built in microwave that vents forward so that the steam does not go up into my cabinet drawers. Do any of these two vent forward? The one I have vents up and it goes into the drawers above which is a horrible design and I dont use it because of that. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by manufacturers most trim kits like the one on my whirlpool vent sup into the cabinet. bad design.
Question - on the SMD2489 model, is the blue indicator light always on? I really like the look of that one better, but I hate blue LED indicator lights. Thanks for this video, very helpful.
I believe the blue light goes off if you disable the “wave to open” feature.
Do you press on the stainless for both models to open and close? Does one feel like it won’t dent as much with touching and pushing on it? And also based on that I would turn off the wave sensor
There is an open and close button on the panels of both of these options (reference 0.55 sec of this video) but you can push either one on the face of the drawer to close it (not to open it). The SMD2489 has glass touch control panel which is really nice and the SMD2470 does not have the wave to open feature. I hope all of this info helps!
Are these models affected with the 114mil class action lawsuit settled or have they made the changes to the new models
I like the idea of these, but how do you clean it? Can you pull out the sliding tray panel to clean inside kind of like an oven door, or is it not removable?
If it’s removable I haven’t figured out how. There is a cut out in the back of the drawer so that you can reach in and clean the insides.
is the keypad on the plastic or glass version backlit? If not, are any of the drawers backlit?
Also, these things are super expensive and don't have inverters. Panasonic counter microwave is so much better but takes up space.

My Sharp microwave drawer sticks when I press open and sometimes I have to pull it open to help it move open. How can I fix this?

I thought I saw somewhere that the interior height of the 89 was 7 7/8" high where all others are 7 1/8". Can anyone confirm this? It would make a difference in being able to use a covered casserole dish or not.
Nope. They both appear to be a little over 7 1/8 inches.
Hi Joe, Can one obtain the 2489 with Black Stainless steel?
Unfortunately 2489 does not come in Black Stainless. The 2470 as well as the Dacor DMR24M977WM do however come in Black Stainless.

None that come to mind. I know Miele has a handless combination oven and microwave available in the EU but it’s been years and we’ve heard nothing about coming state side.
I have noticed you pushed the panel to open and that is not working on mine. It is now July 2023 and I have Model #SMD3070AYSE.
The 3070 is nearly identical to the 2470 and will need to be pulled to open.
Why does the 89 have so much negative reviews on Amazon? I guess unhappy customers that probably don’t know how to use the darn thing? 😂

🤷🏻♂️ I just don’t get the benefit of the wave to open feature. I’d still recommend the 89 over the 70 but mainly because of the glass touch controls. I do dislike cheap gimmicks though. Educated buyers see through them and get put off.
