      I'm also 50 yrs old (well nearly) have been djing for more then 30 years now and I still do gain each gig knowledge or humble enough to accept it. It happened to me that I switched genre and suddenly the floor went empty, I immediatly switched (like after 15 seconds not the whole track) to another genre and the floor was again packed... if you don't look at your crowd at that moment, you can't adapt either. Cheers big up! DJ CFLY

    Great advice as always. Unfortunately a lot of DJs out there still get it wrong. Some assume that playing bangers/music they like, works regardless...#Fail. I've had instances where I literally had to completely throw out a prepared playlist and completely went freestyle just coz the crowd was feeling it. A DJ is an entertainer, period. And if you cannot make the crowd move, then it doesn't matter what technical skill, flashy equipment etc. you got.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 6 lety +5

      So true. I've played for people who clearly wanted a more chill atmosphere. They did not want crazy high energy bangers or super fast mixing at all. I just played groovy R&B tunes like R Kelly - Step in the name of love, Koffe Brown - Afterparty, Lucy Pearl - Dance Tonight, etc, etc and they had a blast! Non-stop dancing and singing along to everything

    @14:40 How to organize music: SMART CRATES. Smart crates are a game changer, you will never have to drag tracks into crates ever again. You do all the work when you prep a track, and then it organizes itself. add tons of tags to tracks with info about them (vocals, if they have multiple genres they could fit in, opener/closer, energy level, popularity, etc) and then you have a library that organizes itself as you add more music.

    I started DJing in an area where there was little reaction. I thought it was me at first until I did a party in another city and they went crazy. Different type of people react differently. I noticed a younger crowd does not party like the older crowd did and still does.

    really good tips,been a DJ for 28 years and it's refreshing to see a DJ tips channel that's clearly outlining the same issues I overcame after about 2 years since I was 16/17,you explain clearly,no ego,unlike me,I do mixes,just in the house that are mostly to complex,doing total mixing,like 5 minute or more mixes taking bar breaks,dodging chord/key/vocal/ clashes,beat breaks,intros that start 4/8 even singe or 2 beat breaks at the start of DJ nightmare records that make you work a little harder,tricky out of single/double beat tracks giving you a 14 or 15 beat intro while great when you can do them but for the novice it's hard,have opinions re passing the time waiting for your cue,I sometimes add in some reverb or echo and or maybe with some bit crusher at about 5,10 20% out of 100%,usualy about 6-11 on bitcrusher,gives more of a kick to the beat ,esp if your playing it faster than norm wich you can manipulate at a minor twist of I dial and it sounds like your bringing in new drumbeats when your only tweaking a a little,lots of we fx you can do but don't overdo,unless your really improving a track, the croud won't thank you for ruining a song,they may like a good track with some on the fly live remixes,maybe adding the same song a half a minute in so you get the best bits of the tracks played throughout,but work that out first,sometimes I only play the same records just 4 beats in,gives you some mad echo effects.Sound DJ tips,after 30 years almost not anything I didn't know but if just starting out I'd listen to this guy,dunno who's been mixing longer and not heard his stuff but impressed by his style and content,wise words,listen up to the man,CLEARLY knows his stuff,subbed,thinking of starting a channel myself,not great with social media but will follow,could be swapping to odd tip between us,and anyone in comms if you understand the shit I'm saying pat yourself on the back,you are a good DJ,cheers TMLmt,am sure many dj's have learned some good pratical common sense that ya get with years of training,good luck,if I feel I can add my own takes,back up what you're saying and even suggest alternate ideas and thought,saw so many dj's with"Advanced Mixing Tips!.... two 32 beat basic drum machine pattered tracks being mixed so you can hear each track ever so simply falling into line ... er,I learde that in a couple of days!But your vids are really good,very good presentations and ya cover a lot that beginners and average DJs will benefit,cheers,KraktE(alienrape is not a DJ name,it's a trigger name,lolz

    In my experience it's the bar owner that wants to control the vibe with certain genres of music. What they don't realize is... the crowd doesn't like it but as a DJ we know what's gonna get the best reaction. I've come to the conclusion to stop listening to bar owners who have no experience in reading a crowd and knowing what to play.

    First things first... thank you @DJTLM for posting this video. I find all of your tutorials/videos informative and helpful. Keep doing what you do, sir!
    I have a SZ2. The SZ2 is absolutely huge but I really like it and the features that it has including the post fader effects. I upgraded from a DDJ-S1 and I got a little lost when I first looked over all the buttons and knobs. Now I'm more familiar with them and I'm at the point where I'm figuring out how to use them to improve my mixing. The SZ2 costs quite a bit but if you have the money for it and don't already have the SZ then you may want to consider it.
    Another thing you may want to take into consideration is Rekordbox DJ. I've used Serato since I first started but I was also curious about how Rekordbox worked. Unfortunately (as of several months ago) the SZ2 does not work with Rekordbox but I didn't know that until I brought it home, plugged in it and tried to run it. Had I known beforehand then I probably would've also considered the DDJ-RZ. But again, I'm happy with the SZ2 and I'm already familiar with Serato DJ so all is good.
    Hope this helps.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for the feedback! I saw someone in the comment section who has the sz2, but can't get the post fader fx to work. I don't have the unit here so I can't check. Was there anything you needed to do to activate post fader?

    • @KountryBoy
      @KountryBoy Před 6 lety

      I don't remember doing anything special, they just worked...well sort of. On FX1 I have UFO, Space Verb Lift and Reverb. I just tested all 3 again but I still couldn't get UFO to work post fader. On FX2 I have LPF, HPF and Echo, but I could only get the Echo to work. I'm still new to the post fader effects feature and I'm still learning the SZ2 so I don't know if the post fader effect feature is designed to utilize all of the FX in Serato. But for as much as the SZ2 costs it definitely should.
      Also, I'm running Serato V 1.9.10 on a Windows 10 laptop that was updated earlier today. The post fader effects, mentioned above that worked, still worked even before the Windows updated that I did today.
      Please let me know if any additional information or clarification is needed. #ShareTheKnowledge

    I wanted to know, how can you rock a crowd while still playing the unique and rare music you love? Do such crowds even still exist, where they are open to hearing new things and enjoying it?

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 6 lety +2

      +Shreya Panigrahi I know what you mean and it’s not easy. Most “mainstream” places will attract crowd that want to hear mainstream music. They don’t react that well to “unique and rare music”.
      I used to play at a spot where I could literally play anything and the crowd would love it. As a DJ that is such a liberating feeling!
      What I would do (if I was in your shoes) is try to find your audience online. Look for people in your area who are into your style, and once you find enough organize a small event for those people. That way you will have the right crowd. Now it might never turn i to something really big, but at least you get to do what you want to do

    Hi TLM! I have some Questions about Mixing Technics:
    When you do a transition oder drop-it-on-the-one, are there special Points in the Tracks where to do this best?
    So I recogniced a good Point for a Drop is after a Hook, whithin the first Beat of a ne Verse, because after a Hook, the old song often has some kind of closure. Are there any other Points that you can suggest?
    The more difficult thing for me is to choose the right Place for a transistion. A Break seems to be always a good Part to go out of the Track.
    If the new Track has the same Key as the Track thats playling, it coult also be possible to Mix the 4 Bar Intro in the last 4 Bars of a 8 Bar Hook and as the new Track is going to be start right, the old Track can be closed.
    Do you sometimes also mix into a Verse? Or is that a no-go? Do you have any other clues about this theme? Thanks a lot an best regards!

    As a DJ, Do you need to have all the genres on your playlist? For example, I like playing House Music and I have a collection of several sub-genres of House Music such as Future House, Electro House, Progressive House and etc. Should I have tracks that I do not plan to play in the future?

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 6 lety +1

      +Garry Malalo-an As a DJ you should do what you want to do and play the genres you like to play. I don’t have folders with tracks/genres that I don’t plan to play. But for some DJs this will be different. If you choose to become a DJ who plays everything then you will need to have all genres in your crates

    Serato DJ is new to me and importing new tracks to my crates can be a pain. With Virtual DJ v7, (and every other version before it) importing was not necessary as Virtual DJ's library can locate your PC's library and play the tracks as is. I'm not sure if Virtual DJ v8 still functions that way. I like the method you use to import new tracks to Serato and I would love to see a video on exactly how its done.

      I had a personal experience with iTunes management and I would agree with TLM and make your own folders. Years ago when I used iTunes there was a bug that rewrote all my files to four-letter character, for example, MJ Thriller was renames to QXUC. This happened to all my files, imagine what it was like to correct that. I would never rely on any software again to organize my music. Even last year there was another bug that deleted your files from the library.

    I hosted a wedding ceremony two weeks ago. I started dj'ing back in 89'. I am 40 ish years old. I've performed in all aspects of our industry. House parties, private, corporate, wedding ceremonies, clubs, east coast, "Vermont" west coast, "LA/Compton", up north to include "Chicago & down south @ Panama City Beach/Tampa/Y'bor city, Miami. I've been lucky & very fortunate. That ceremony I hosted a couple of weeks ago was terrible. The bride was unbearable. She provided me with her personal song library. She said, if you play a song not on my list, I will sue you in a court of law. Her song selection was so terrible that people only danced to four of her song requests. A four hour gig turned into a two hour gig. I made $2,200.00 and got to go home early. What would you suggest that I should have done differently?

      hank shepherd hey man I feel u on this subject with the lady in the wedding I felt the same about the groom family not the groom just his family. They want me to play the some type of genres of music that I don't have cause the groom didn't give me his list that his family request now they from Africa i had reggae for few but this guy give me his CD of songs that the groom should of gave me but yeah I did it they dance for lil bit but got the bride list like old and new school hip hop r&b 2 step music that I got on lock her husband didn't give me his list so I Always Request give the bride and groom of there genres of music (Hip Hop R&B Reggae Reggaeton Top 40 etc) u name it (P.S. make sure it's super early like before the wedding comes up they can send u throw email or social media or pen paper what not) then u should be fine. Reading ur story its wow crazy experience and what ever the bride list was I'm sorry u had to go through that experience. But keep doing ur thing and keep on mixing man.

      I've had something like that happen to me. To avoid loosing future clients in the audience, I usually will announce that the playlist is from the bride/groom and not me.

      +DJ Free yeah, the quality is also worse because OBS didn’t record my stream this time so I had to download the FB stream and that’s way worse than the OBS recordings from the last episodes. The OBS recording path was set to my main external HDD, but because that drive wasn’t connected it failed to record. Things you learn by doing 😄😄
      We’ll get there though. Couple more episodes and everything will be as good as I want it to be 💯

    I'm looking at getting a cheap audio/midi interface does anyone have any suggestions?

      Same here! I looked online and you have so many options nowadays.
      I did buy a Zoom U22 last week, but that is mostly for being able to record for my podcast when I'm on the move. It's very portable. But it is severely limited as far as ins and outs so I would not buy that for the studio.
      Advice for anyone looking for an audio interface: think about what it is that you need the interface to have. How many ins and outs, mic preamps, xlr, etc. What kind of connection? usb, firewire, thunderbolt, usb-c?
      Once you figure that out, look for reviews of devices that meet your criteria (and fit your budget) and make a choice.

      Yeah, I still have a lot of issues with the streaming software (OBS). I'll be testing with others this week because the video stream needs to be better. I know it's not my connection because that tested just fine
