    Hi djTLMtv, just want to say I have always been unclear on where to start and how to do it but tonight I have come across your videos and feel completely inspired and positive it can be learnt. You are really good at explaining this in an understandable way for a complete newbie, so I would like to ask you if there is room in your life to share your knowledge please continue doing so, both for beginners and more advanced (it's really a noble thing that you share with us for free these days).
    I currently live in Berlin and see a lot of good stuff and have decided to do this even though I am 35, not because of money or fame but because I feel something inexplicable when listening to certain styles and mixes, music can be so soothing and provoking at the same time, and it connects us all.
    This new DJ era really turns DJing into an art of it's own and I consider all those who play around with sound and turn it into something new and beautiful true artists. I believe all humans have an innate need to create, and you are helping many of us by providing this tool knowledge so we can create the music the way we feel it and share with others. Peace and many thanks.

    I do I.T and know a lot about electronics, and thought this video was going to be dull and pointless. I am writing to say subbed! Thank you, as this answered a lot of the what is this really for. I stumbled on this as I recently purchased the Big boy amps, crossover and got the sounds setup super sweet, wife bought me the Numark MT pro 3 and I am starting from the beginning on how to scratch! For years music has been my life. So I know my music, Now I want to play with the music to make it fun.. Who knows maybe one day when I get good wife can listen to my jams!

    DJ TLM, thank you so much for this video! I sent you a message on IG and we spoke about my situation. I decided to go back to the very basics and fundamentals of being a DJ. After being a DJ for almost 1 year or so, I skipped the fundamentals and went straight into using shortcuts. As of today, I'm going back to phase 1 and starting all over again from scratch and mastering these fundamentals in chronological order. My success will be because of mentors like you. Watch me! Thank you!

    you really should sell your DJ lessons and make money doing this! There's a DJ school here in Austin called The Dub Academy that used to charge $400 for DJ 101 (each session is 3 weeks long), another $400 for DJ 102, and another $400 for DJ103, but b/c I've learned all the basics from all my DJ friends, I don't need DJ 101 and I already have all my equipment at home, so i don't need to pay for use of equipment. I say you should charge b/c your DJ videos are such good quality, your voice is clear and you talk just at the right speed that I can really hear and listen to what you area saying and I'd rather pay say $100 to watch your videos that i can watch over and over again if i need to than to pay $400 for 3 weeks worth of DJ classes. Plus not everyone has a DJ school in their city or town, so I think you could really do well!

  • @Herfmonster
    @Herfmonster Před 10 lety +1

    Another great part to this series. I saw it a lot with new DJs. They were bedroom DJs who thought they were great and they might be pretty good on their cheap home setup but they were totally lost on an expensive club install setup. Last night they practiced on their $60.00 Gemini Scratch master but tonight they are expected to use a $1400.00 Rane mp24 or a Dennon mixer. I also used to be the resident in a club where there WAS a 1/2 second sound delay between the booth and the dance floor... AND NO BOOTH MONITORS!!! A young or new DJ just hasn't gained the experience to know how to cope with that yet One young DJ I ran into could hardly make it through the night because he couldnt mix without a split cue in his headphones (cue in the left ear and master in the right) he spun one trainwreck after another because the club's installed Numark mixer didn't have that function. some of the new young DJs couldn't make the adjustment from a 10 inch 2 channel battle mixer to a 19 inch 4 channel club install mixer. If you really want to pull off a last minute save for some event organizer try spinning a short 30 minute DJ set at a downtown street festival just to keep the crowd happy using a Mackie 1604 PA mixer (look it up, 16 mono channels) and two discman CD players. I've done it, and it's not ideal, but would a young DJ even know what cables to use and where to plug them in to that PA mixer?

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 10 lety

      You are so right! I've been in a lot of those situations. It makes you a better DJ. Same thing with long sets. I remember when playing 6 hour solo sets was a normal thing. I see a lot of DJ's now who only do 1 to 2 hour sets and complain about the one time they had to play 3 hours ;)
      In the pre Pioneer days I had to deal with a lot of 6 or 8 channel mixers with no crossfader. It's not ideal, but you learn so much from those situations

    • @Herfmonster
      @Herfmonster Před 10 lety

      djTLMtv Yup... 6 hour sets used to be normal I used to gig at a bar in Columbia South Carolina that was known to be the local bar employees bar. After every body else's bar closed they met up at this bar so that meant a lot of after hours parties. For a time while I had that regular gig I had another regular gig 200 miles away (I would be what you call nowdays a mobile doing clubs) These after hours nights would sometimes last until 4-5am then tear down, load up and hit the road to Burlington North Carolina. sometimes you just have to pull into a rest area and sleep in your van but before you get there. Luckily the gig the next night was at a hotel bar and part of my pay was a hotel room.

  • @reflux043
    @reflux043 Před 3 lety

    Could you possibly do a video on how to use a 'dj battle tool vinyl' or the same if the vinyl is ripped to mp3 as one long track. I know its a stupid question, but as a beginner its confusing. Alot of my samples are all joined together, eg. Ahhh, fresh, 1234, etc, and there's hardly any space between them. Some of the beat samples are so short too. So basically, im unsure what im doing and how to use these samples properly or how to do a mix with them.

    Maybe worth noting is that with mixers like the pioneer 800 the digital/line switch is on the back panel, for the guys switching between serato and usb and vice verca. At first I did not know that, at one of my first gigs I was up following a guy using usb's, I hooked up my serato correctly but only got sound out of 1 channel. Turned out the switch was on digital, and I didn't figure you would have to look for something at the back panel of the mixer. Had me going back to back with that guy instead of just doing my thing :p

    • @djTLMtv

    Can anyone chime in with my query below?
    I recently purchased a Numark M2 "Scratch Mixer" and notice that it doesn't seem to take much dirt, use, etc for the fader to begin slightly bleeding in certain spots towards the end.
    This prompts me to ask the question, would it be worth investing in an Innofader down the track to install into this mixer? The Innofader would basically cost more than the total mixer does brand new but as it's what is primarily used when scratching, can it still be considered an investment?
    Thanks.

    @Dj TLM Everyone says traktor is extremely difficult. Do you agree have you ever used it.

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 10 lety +4

      I tried to use it a couple of times, but something went wrong every time. Mostly hardware problems though.
      Serato and Traktor are similar systems so the basic functions work the same way. The major difference is that Traktor has way more options and those options can confuse people and make Traktor seem difficult. The question you have to ask yourself is do you need the extra options Traktor has to offer?
      Think of it like comparing IOS to Android. IOS keeps it 'simple' and Android gives you a million options to customize everything.
      I am going to stalk Native Instruments to see if I can get my hands on Traktor to do some video's, but I think they only work with the bigger channels ;)

    • @djTLMtv
      @djTLMtv  Před 5 lety +1

      Hmmm, I clearly mention and explain the function of the crossfader 7 minutes into the video. I don't go into the fader curve but I talk about that in the scratch tutorials.

    • @UsamaMnemonikk
      @UsamaMnemonikk Před 5 lety

      @@djTLMtv It seems that I didn't quite clearly put it. I'll try to explain, what I mean. If you're playing on someone's mixer, and you're used to make more or less smooth transitions using crossfader (as I do, for instance), you definitely have to check the crossfader mode (the curve shape) before you start to play. Maybe the DJ, who played before you, was using it for scratching, or maybe nobody's using the crossfader in this club at all. In this case, you can get into an awkward situation, when you're moving the crossfader just a little bit, and the second track starts to play on 100% volume. That's why I guess the information about this little switch is essential too.
      Anyway, thank you for your lessons! I'm watching your channel since 2013 :)) Greetings from Ukraine)

    Hi guys,
    Due to health issues I couldn't finish video's I was working on (NS7-2 review) and I can't record new video's either. I lost my voice over the weekend and that makes it a bit difficult to record stuff ;)
    I should be fine in a couple of days so stay tuned!
