  • Platenstrasse; Frankfurt, Germany: One very famous street to the US military's former active duty and their dependents. It was one of the huge long time lodging locations in Frankfurt, for the former US military's families. It existed for about 50 years. It included quick access to the city (15-20 mins.), many comfortable apartments, a sports and games service (DYS / DYA), 3 baseball fields, 1 tennis court, playgrounds, a basketball court and Elementary School (number 1). Today, in November 2013, this housing area belongs to the local government and economy, since the late 1990s.

I am shedding tears remembering these fields. I played in the FKT City league from 1984 to 1990. I was very competitive. So much memories I have on VHS I hope to save and put on YOU tube. Wonderful job Sir.

This video brings back so many memories.
My dad used to play ball on the main field behind the housing buildings. The building behind it was our home. I used to play little league on the field by the elementary school.
That bike park is probably a bike park because once upon a time it was a single clay hill, my friends and I would jump our bikes off it, my brother tore up his knee pretty bad on it.
    Thank you for this. 1987-1990

Sad to see the passing of Smokey, I remember him from work, as one of the many DJ's that performed in the NCO clubs. Part of the work in our office was booking their performances. Remember the days of the Topper Club, Plantation, Drake, 97th Club. In the early days I delivered food to them, and as the job evolved and promotions followed we later became the "Services Division" that supplied all kinds of things for MWR.

This was great to see. I lived at 1005 Platenstrasse from 66 to 68. Loved that we could play baseball all summer nearby and easily wander around the city all day with 2 marks in my pocket.

We lived directly across the street from the elementary school on Platenstrasse and I started school there in 1966. My Father was stationed at the I.G. Farben (Abrams) Bldg. at the time. I still have photos my parents took of me as a toddler on the playground at Platen. Thanks for all of your Frankfurt videos.

@Hatchetman6971, I really do feel your emotions and can certainly relate wholeheartedly. I too have a lot of memories from these fields for many years, as I am an athlete, and sports enthusiast/competitor. Thanks for your honesty and transparency relating to this topic. God bless.

I went to that school back in 1973-1974, I watched so many baseball games and softball games from those fields as well as football games. There was a really neat outdoor roller rink on the left side of the school and soccer fields that stretched the entire length of the platen housing area. So many great memories of platen, sad to see it just gobbled up by trees and weeds.

@5:37 those were the softball fields for the Frankfurt Mens Mixed Military and civilian softball players. I played for coach Larry Hill of the Frankfurt Butchers. We won 6 straight years the championship and I won the MVP also. So much fun. Do you have any video of the Butchers by chance. I would pay good money for them or a copy. Great stuff dude. You made my day,

Thank you for narrating and making this video. I attended the elementary school in the late sixties. Every day my Mother would drive me from the economy in Oberursel to Camp King. I would then take the bus to the elementary school. What long days for a kid. The educational experience enriched my life significantly, even to this day. It was so awesome living in Germany during the sixties😀

Man..I was so happy to see a picture of Mr. Beagus in the picture. He was my all time favorite teacher. I had him in the 6th grade. Great video but it brought back some great memories. I hit my first home run on that field playing in the league setup for us American dependents. I learned to play baseball on that field and basketball on the court next to it that you show. It was so competitive and all us kids played. Now its a bike park but at least they kept the B-Ball court as Mr. beagus would call it. He let us play almost every day out there. The fields around there were so alive with games. Your right that the field that is next to the little league field closer to Platen housing was a softball field. They had a fast pitch league for the service men that was very competitive and had some pitchers that were almost legends around there. Their games would be so crowded when certain pitchers played it was a happening. It was a blast to play your game and then go watch other games. Your also right that the other field next to Elem.#1 was a practice field that we used. We used it for kickball during school recess as well. There was also another field that got a lot of use as well across the street. Those were great times. It was the early 1970's. My Family lived in Platen in the temporary housing but moved to Hugel for the rest of our stay in Germany..BTW Mr. Beagus did pass way while he was living in Phoenix, Arizona.

In the late 50s when serving in the army in Germany, Elvis Presley visited the son of a fellow soldier who was stricken with polio. This event was covered and widely publicized. Less known is the fact that it took place at Platenstrasse housing!

I went in the late fifties. I had a Scottish teacher which meant I had trouble with American English spelling. To warn us against going into the woods they had an annual demonstration of a butterfly bomb. It had a light explosive load and would hop up 3 feet and go off. This was the high point of the school year. Bet your school never had fireworks. Place looks like it did in 56. Oh yeah. It was integrated before state side schools thanks to Ike.

I was there 73-77. Was Mrs Rosenheimer's class the one with the pets? We use to have to sign up to take them home on long weekends and holidays. My parents would always wonder what I was bringing home next. Hamster, parakeet, fish and Pepper the rabbit. Fond memories of the Von Steuben housing complex and playing on the huge field between Huegel and Steuben housing.
