Dude I remember actually competing in this!!!! My family went to the Green Valley Ranch Hotel during EVO, and I saw a couple people with GameCube controllers. So I got my controller and my mom took me to play with these guys. It turns out, I didn’t even know it was a tournament, I thought it was just a gathering of people playing Melee. It wasn’t until a few years back when my friend that also attended told me that this was actually EVO. I’m shocked that at 8 years old and played smash casually, I was able to make it into bracket. I got 17th!!! I still think I’m the youngest smash melee player to make it out of bracket in EVO.
Thank goodness, I was afraid either people wouldn't see it because of the game footage or be distracted by the text and not see the highlights. Thanks for validating my method.

No one beats Ken without abusing cheap shit. the puff hit a streak of lucky moves in that first set and did some pretty bullshit ledge guard antics, only reason he won. There's a reason that the puff player is a complete no-name even after beating Ken, winning a set off one of the best doesn't mean a damn thing if you can't even make it out of pools half the time.
I really disliked how the puff fun-canceled ken's jv 4. If you're going to give up anyway may as well give them the credit instead of ruining the experiance for everyone
Not at all. This is only bad in comparison to today's top level. You could call this better than today's mid level. It's just the tech skill that's not so great
People didn't play bad in 2007. It took time for different ideas and things to be discovered or made relevant, and it took time for more people with more ideas and different abilities to come along. This game isn't like some ancient art that's been around for hundreds of years with a long history of talent, or had the best knowledge being passed down across ages among millions of people. The game was so unlike any thing else before; it had a small pool of people (most of which who were kids mind you) who had to basically invent playing this game well from scratch, and it took the right people that were willing and had the ability to take the game as far as humanly possible.Building the community and level of skill today took time because as any one person started getting better, other people that were willing pushed themselves to rise to the occasion, but it's like evolution I guess. It's a process that takes time. Sure it seems like players now get better a lot faster. It's mostly because most knowledge is laid out and easily accessible and more things have been brought to light to be relevant; it just has to be a applied. Back then people had less broken down and figured out, and also it's probably because more people came along who were more capable and/or skilled to take the game farther starting factoring in.
Also, I feel that some people take the level of play now for granted. Sure, if you look at Ken from like 2004 he looked not so good, but he had no primer, no "shortcut" to make him get better faster. He had no 201x era player with their experience and knowledge to teach him everything; all he had for help were players who were trying to figure this game out the same as him, who were just as fresh to learning to play optimal. Now there's so many good players that share their knowledge and experiences, there's so many matches online for people to learn and see good ideas and bad ideas. It's like Ken had to draw a map and figure out how to get everywhere and what was what, and drawing that map took a long time. Nowadays players have a map laid out for them to get them where they want to go. Early players had to work hard to figure things out by trial and error; new players now have less things to worry about figuring out because most everything has already been pointed out and picked apart, so they don't have to spend so long trying to make sense of the game.
