I think for me the weirdest part of ZSS's "easter egg" status in Brawl is the fact that she was in the first trailer. She was one of the first new characters they wanted to show off, and yet you could theoretically unlock every character without knowing she's even there. I feel like they just REALLY expected the Smash Ball to be something everyone was using all of the time.

I mean people forget but the smash ball and final smashes were a HUGE source of hype back in the day. I remember ads and magazines for the game at blockbuster or gamestop always showing the smash ball and my brother and I were so excited to see everyone's epic attacks

Fun little exception to the "same power level across stocks" rule is Lucario from sm4sh onwards, his aura actually increases and decreases based on the number of stocks he has relative to his opponents, there was even a strategy some insane doubles players used where the Lucario would instantly jump off the edge, so he could have the increased aura for typically the first of each of the opponents stocks, making it a very risky gamble!
It both is and isn't. Aura (and Wing) has a fluctuating trigger across stocks, but, barring an early gimp or Quick Attack SD, will always be available on each stock eventually.

As someone who mained ZSS back in Brawl and joined a few tournaments around that time, this video was an amazing trip down memory lane. So, thanks, I loved it! One of my favorite memories of that time was a guy that came up to me after I beat him in bracket and spoke his mind about ZSS. He said using the power suit pieces like this felt like cheating. The guy lost using Meta Knight. Yeah, okay buddy.
I really liked the more personal segment toward the end (about this whole mechanic being experimental and zany, the possibility of someone finding out about ZSS through a match with Samus's Final Smash, the little video of you getting Metroid Zero Mission, etc). It serves as a reminder that this game is more than just a competitive experience, but a creative work of art where the devs tried pleasing many fans while also trying to experiment with Smash's formula in new and exciting ways.
I mentioned this in other videos’ comments, but I love Brawl (and every Smash game) for both what they did, and what they tried to do. Would be so boring if they had a strict formula and kept to it. Thanks for the kind words, glad you liked the little home video segment at the end :)
Don't ask how I know this but her leg models aren't attached to her hip smoothly and if you equip the metal box item, it gives her the illusion of her having a I have been advised not to finish this statement
Besides that and the lack of muscle definition I thought it was pretty cool model especially for its time, cool hairstyle, cool face and etc. Especially the boots, not a big fan of the designs of the jet heels in Smash 4 and Ultimate, they sync poorly with the rest of her design imo (not even just cause they're high heels). And in Ultimate she looks weirdly super pale and has some odd orange makeup.
Actually, you can get Toon Link, Wolf, and Jigglypuff from Subspace, they just aren't part of the story. After you watch the credits, in three of the levels you can find a door that wasn't there before which will teleport you to a battle with that character and the stage related to them, and if you win you unlock them.
It's kinda weird how Zero Suit Samus is treated more as an expansion or form of Samus as opposed to a character you can switch to. Zelda and Sheik are pretty clearly two characters that you can switch between at any time, and while Pokemon Trainer incentivizes you to switch more it's still three separate characters you unlock in Subspace. Zero Suit feels more like a form rather than a standalone character.
Seconding the theory that ZSS wasn't intended to be a full character! I used to do a lot of Brawl character modding (particularly for Brawl Minus) and the way ZSS and Samus tie together in the code is WEIRD. The game straight-up considers them a single character in terms of how certain aspects of them are stored in memory, something that made them very finicky to mod because their effective filesize limit was so much smaller than other characters. This isn't a problem in modern Brawl mods, but it was REALLY notable back in the day when people were still figuring out how to change how the game handles this stuff. As far as I remember, Zelda/Sheik and Pokemon Trainer didn't have this issue at all!
There's something so funny about how Smash Bros will let you pick up and throw random shit. Doing that with something like Robin's tomes / Levin Sword is one thing: you could do something similar right now and not think anything of it. But Samus doing that with her super-powered suit of armor and having that be an effective tactic is something out of a parody. Especially considering how Samus's armor is all but confirmed to be magical in nature. The missiles, the Morph Ball and how the Space Pirates can't begin to replicate it, in some games it disappears off her body if she can't focus enough. In concept, it wouldn't be too dissimilar if Shanoa from Order of Ecclesia got in Smash, she used different glyphs for all her moves that were tied to an MP mechanic, but as soon as one she ran out of MP for one she could just pelt her opponent in the face with the respective glyph symbol
The space pirates can begin to replicate it though, theres logs of their attempts. It goes bad because they didn't convert the pirates physical form to energy, so they got smushed. But that is a tech issue, and the chozo version is set to work with chozo biology.
The pirates can't replicate it because it's just mystical precursor race tech. The implication is that it IS tech, but chozo were so far ahead of everyone else tech-wise that their stuff might as well be magic. That said, the funny bird woman just pelting you with her lost tech space wizard power armor is kind of unintentionally comedic.
This is actually really fucking cool and so much more true to Samus' character than those goofy-ass heels. Taking what would seem like a pile of junk and turning it into an oppressively deadly weapon is the kind of resourcefulness that takes Samus to her greatest heights.

8:10 Bowser and regular Samus also can't glide toss, which seems to be a weird quirk of them rolling into their shell/morph ball during their roll animations
I believe the movement you get from glide tossing is related to the momentum you have during your roll. You cancel/carryover the momentum to your item throw. They can still input the glide toss input and throw item OoS, but since their rolls do not move during the glidetoss window, there is no gliding :( I could be off tho, not certain.
I knew about the sheild input but had no idea you could do it mid-match by mashing up and down taunt, that really surprised me. I thought I knew every secret input in the game

You can play as Zero Suit in Subspace after you get the Varia Suit by tilting the C-stick when hovered over Samus when selecting characters. You can also do this to play as a specific Pokémon with Pokémon Trainer.
I actually really love this idea of a fighting game character that is broken and dependent on getting an early lead because they lose access to critical advantages in the middle of the match.

ZSS is no distinct character because Samus is always samus regardless of the armor. Sheik is a different persona of Zelda to disguise from Ganon in ocarina of time. That was changed in subsequent games to split the vastly different playstyles to different characters. The transformation was also removed

i like the idea of zss as a character, being accessed like a fun cheat code (kinda like how “justin bailey” was in the original metroid) but it was for the best she just ended up being her own character in for and ultimate lol
AND the way she's implemented in Subspace where you have to start out as her???? SUCH a sick moment to get the power suit back, especially in the Maze portion of the game (which got annoying after a while, but exploring as Samus felt reminiscent of a Metroid game which rules)
But it's also part of the reason why those games are so balanced in non-competitive play. Nintendo forgoes the favour of what is, at best, a secondary market to appeal more to their target demographic. If you were particularly inexperienced, would it sound more or less fun that you have a fighting, if blind, chance to win?
Steve's resources essentially being a snowball mechanic is much worse for the game than e.g. Terry's comeback mechanic. I hate both but it's a matter of scale.

Sephiroth gets access to winged mode earlier with less stocks and later with more stocks tho. So he's the other exception. Also if G&W is losing, in the last 5 seconds of the game the chance of a 9 goes up to 60% instead of 1/9

1:21 In Brawl Lucario's aura doesn't just depend on percentage, but also stocks. There was the Anubis Strategy that took advantage of that. So theoretically ZSS isn't the only one.

This feels like a reverse comeback mechanic. Instead of the game giving you something to turn the tables if youre losing, you have that at the start of the match and need to work very hard to prevent your advantage from disappearing. While likely not intentional, this is probably the first time we see a character get actively weaker the more of a disadvatage they are at in smash
Funnily enough, GOML 2014 (a relatively high profile event) ran their Brawl tournament with games of 1 stock with a 3 minute timer (as opposed to the standard 3 stocks 8 minutes). At that tournament of 64 players, a ZSS came fifth. ZSS also had a reasonably good run the year prior at this low profile event called APEX 2013, which used the standard ruleset. The ZSS player managed to make it into the top 1 of the 338 players in attendance. Which is also impressive.
I always loved playing Samus in Brawl casually because of the transformation gimmick. I think playing her and Bowser as a kid is what gave me my love of fighting game characters that transform/have multiple movesets. Plus it was always hilarious to turn into ZSS after a final smash and then immediately machine gun people with the armor pieces.
I will always remember that time me and my friends were playing brawl and samus won using her final smash, saw zero suit in the winscreen and for some reason, our first reaction was laughing

In concept, it wouldn't be too dissimilar if Shanoa from Order of Ecclesia got in Smash, she used different glyphs for all her moves that were tied to an MP mechanic, but as soon as one she ran out of MP for one she could just pelt her opponent in the face with the respective glyph symbol

It goes bad because they didn't convert the pirates physical form to energy, so they got smushed.
But that is a tech issue, and the chozo version is set to work with chozo biology.

The pirates can't replicate it because it's just mystical precursor race tech. The implication is that it IS tech, but chozo were so far ahead of everyone else tech-wise that their stuff might as well be magic.
That said, the funny bird woman just pelting you with her lost tech space wizard power armor is kind of unintentionally comedic.

Brawl was one of my favourite games when I was younger, it makes me happy seeing an entire channel dedicated to it.
This is actually really fucking cool and so much more true to Samus' character than those goofy-ass heels. Taking what would seem like a pile of junk and turning it into an oppressively deadly weapon is the kind of resourcefulness that takes Samus to her greatest heights.

Fun fact is that ZSS actually does relatively well vs both MK and Icies, but she struggles more against characters like pikachu olimar and falco

I believe the movement you get from glide tossing is related to the momentum you have during your roll. You cancel/carryover the momentum to your item throw. They can still input the glide toss input and throw item OoS, but since their rolls do not move during the glidetoss window, there is no gliding :( I could be off tho, not certain.
I knew about the sheild input but had no idea you could do it mid-match by mashing up and down taunt, that really surprised me. I thought I knew every secret input in the game

as far as I'm aware this was totally legal, but I couldn't find any clips of anyone doing it since Sago(Midwest) is the only person on earth who plays Samus in Brawl
You can play as Zero Suit in Subspace after you get the Varia Suit by tilting the C-stick when hovered over Samus when selecting characters. You can also do this to play as a specific Pokémon with Pokémon Trainer.
I actually really love this idea of a fighting game character that is broken and dependent on getting an early lead because they lose access to critical advantages in the middle of the match.

ZSS is no distinct character because Samus is always samus regardless of the armor. Sheik is a different persona of Zelda to disguise from Ganon in ocarina of time.
That was changed in subsequent games to split the vastly different playstyles to different characters. The transformation was also removed

i like the idea of zss as a character, being accessed like a fun cheat code (kinda like how “justin bailey” was in the original metroid) but it was for the best she just ended up being her own character in for and ultimate lol
AND the way she's implemented in Subspace where you have to start out as her???? SUCH a sick moment to get the power suit back, especially in the Maze portion of the game (which got annoying after a while, but exploring as Samus felt reminiscent of a Metroid game which rules)
imo, comeback mechanics getting progressively more prominent is why Ult (and very late S4) has such a negative meta for the most part
But it's also part of the reason why those games are so balanced in non-competitive play. Nintendo forgoes the favour of what is, at best, a secondary market to appeal more to their target demographic. If you were particularly inexperienced, would it sound more or less fun that you have a fighting, if blind, chance to win?
Steve's resources essentially being a snowball mechanic is much worse for the game than e.g. Terry's comeback mechanic. I hate both but it's a matter of scale.

Sephiroth gets access to winged mode earlier with less stocks and later with more stocks tho. So he's the other exception. Also if G&W is losing, in the last 5 seconds of the game the chance of a 9 goes up to 60% instead of 1/9

This feels like a reverse comeback mechanic. Instead of the game giving you something to turn the tables if youre losing, you have that at the start of the match and need to work very hard to prevent your advantage from disappearing. While likely not intentional, this is probably the first time we see a character get actively weaker the more of a disadvatage they are at in smash
Funnily enough, GOML 2014 (a relatively high profile event) ran their Brawl tournament with games of 1 stock with a 3 minute timer (as opposed to the standard 3 stocks 8 minutes). At that tournament of 64 players, a ZSS came fifth.
ZSS also had a reasonably good run the year prior at this low profile event called APEX 2013, which used the standard ruleset. The ZSS player managed to make it into the top 1 of the 338 players in attendance. Which is also impressive.
Getting zsm without the final smash felt like a ‘mew under the car’ style myth back at my school. Wild stuff.
I always loved playing Samus in Brawl casually because of the transformation gimmick. I think playing her and Bowser as a kid is what gave me my love of fighting game characters that transform/have multiple movesets. Plus it was always hilarious to turn into ZSS after a final smash and then immediately machine gun people with the armor pieces.
I will always remember that time me and my friends were playing brawl and samus won using her final smash, saw zero suit in the winscreen and for some reason, our first reaction was laughing
Her running animation in Brawl was top tier, and it was nerfed in 4 and Ultimate
