      Thank you for the informative video! Unfortunately I did over exfoliate my skin. I used BHA and retinol for years. But in the last 6 months I have been under a lot of stress and one day I woke up and my skin was very inflame, itchy and burning. I also have several breakouts. I started to use CeraVE moisturise cream and 10% niacinamide and barrage seed oil. Is there any hope for me?

    Thank you for this informative video! My skin was so clear until a few months ago. I started using The Ordinary AHA BHA peel weekly and didn't realize I was destroying my moisture barrier. I have been having new break outs for months not realizing what the problem was. Of course I treated them with harsh actives to get rid of them but it only made them worse. I hope when I start my new gentle hydrating routine that my skin will clear up. I miss having clear skin 😔😭

    I have definitely suffered from damaged skin barrier. First time was when I started using skincare and I ordered almost every product from The Ordinary without knowing everything I needed to know about actives. I started combining and using whole bunch of actives and retinoids at the same time and unfortunately damaged my skin barrier. That is when I started reading up on thinks and everything relating to skin care and that’s when I learned the right way to use skin products. The second time I had a damaged skin barrier is when I started using prescription Tretinoin and slowly but surely I learned how to repair my skin barrier. The products that I used and still use as they are amazing are First Aid Beauty Skin Repair Cream, SkinFx Skin Repair Peptide Cream and then pulling back on my actives and I started to use Korean Skincare which still had some active ingredients but not as much as the serums I was using. With that change and those products I always repair my skin barrier pretty fast and would strongly suggest them to anyone that is dealing with a damaged skin barrier.

I've been keeping my routine as simple as possible but I was wondering if my skin barrier is considered recovered if I've stopped getting new pimples? I'm just afraid of scarring.

      Deeper set/ cystic pimples can be a sign of newly developed acne due to several factors and should not only be explained with a damaged skin barrier. I recommend seeing a dermatologist for a diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

    Hello please help me doctor, so I've always had really clear skin. I started a diet last year because of health issue...It was a really bland diet compare to my old diet..Ever since, my skin started to really change and become dehydrated and flaky, it's annoying me a lot. EVERY PRODUCTS EVEN the GENTLE ones Are bad for my skin. Even the products I've used in the past are not working for me anymore. My health is good, I have no thyroid or anything. But the weird part is that everytime I use a product, my skin would love the products for 1 or 2 weeks and then after that my skin would become very dehydrated and rough with flakiness...Its like someone pulled all my oils and water:( It seems like nothing helps. I sleep enough, i exercise, and i eat a balanced diet now. Please help me. I'd appreciate it. Is it possible that the glycerin or HA is the cause?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Ahmed, I am so sorry to hear about your skin issues. It is important to understand that I can´t give individualized advice via You Tube, to really discover the cause of the changes in your skin you need to see a dermatologist face to face and talk him through everything you do and use.
      There are several possible reasons, from diet to underlying medical conditions that you might not have had diagnosed yet to a change in climate.
      I personally think that it is not very likely that the Glycerin or Hyaluronic Acid are the cause, they should help rather than make things worse. But again, I advise you to see a dermatologist asap.

    • @ahmedbanamah2878
      @ahmedbanamah2878 Před 4 lety

      Hello, thank you for the response! You are right, when my skin was healthy, my skin had no problems with glycerin or HA, but now my skin reacts to everything:( is it possible for your skin to love a product for 1 or 2 weeks and then dry and dehydrate your skin? Like sucks all the moisture? Like it would leave my skin hydrated and smooth and then after several days it would leave my skin dehydrated and flaky..Is this TEWL? Again, thanks for the response! I'm seeing a dermatologist in a few days, I hope she solves my problem. What are some things do you think I should ask the dermatologist? what should I ask her to test me for? what medical conditions cause these problems?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +1

      @@ahmedbanamah2878 I wouldn’t think a product in itself would first hydrate and then dehydrate your skin, what is more likely is that it is not enough in the long run, so you need more occlusives to seal in the moisture.
      Products that would increase TEWL would be chemical or physical exfoliants, retinoids, some (foaming) cleansers.
      As far as medical conditions go: Autoimmune diseases might play a role, the thyroid gland has a huge effect on the skin, as well as atopic diseases like atopic eczema and stuff.
      But again, these are just a few key points, the possibilities are almost endless.
      My advice would be to write down: a) your main concern b)what you already tried to solve it c) your current routine and d) what you already had checked (you mentioned your thyroid levels were fine).
      That way you won’t forget a key point when you have the appointment and can save some time.
      Also: Be patient, it might take a while to find the cause and sort things out. It sadly usually isn’t Enough to just slather on a cream if you have serious issues.

Over the following weeks I adversely reacted to this with itchy raised red bumps appearing on my forehead, near the eyes and near the mouth. Good information. Well explained. My personal experience is when I shave my beard off, my skin has very dry red patches. I don’t know if this is because I haven’t shaved for months and the act of shaving is a trauma for my skin or my skin isn’t moisturized enough from having a beard.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 5 lety +1

      What do you use to shave? A blade or a razor? And what do you use to prep the skin, what do you use to shave and how do you treat it afterwards? My husband had a similar beautiful beard to you in your profile picture, and if he shaves "the regular way" he gets sore and irritated skin too. If he does the whole barber prep stuff, it is much better. Sadly he took off is beard for good about a year ago, too much work to keep looking groomed. Now he has either stubbles or a clean shave, and his skin is very dry. But then again he still uses body wash head to toe, so I guess it is not only the shaving...

    • @maturegents
      @maturegents Před 5 lety

      I believe my skin beneath the beard was dehydrated. I experimented with different soaps, creams and blades. I eliminated all fragrance, used hydrating serums, moisturizers and reset my skin. Growing the beard can present a barrier to moisturizing the skin. This time, I’m using a serum with hyaluronic acid, B5 and ceramides - along with an oil blend as an emollient. Unlike a moisturizer, which can be difficult to get past the beard, the serum is lightweight and is easy to get to skin level if the beard isn’t too long. Beard itch, not a chance. Daily hydration is key.

    I’m absolutely distraught with the state of my skin right now. I have been diagnosed with perioral dermatitis which I believe I developed by damaging my skin barrier and altering its flora.
    About six months ago I started using Aknemycin(erythromycin+tretinoin). My skin started feeling tender, dry and I started getting a lot of spots on my chin. I accounted those to being normal side effects or the tretinoin however I still stopped using it after a week. Maybe it’s worth mentioning that at that time I also started using the ordinary niacinamide and zinc serum(which I also stopped when I stopped Aknemycin)
    A week after that I decided to use Duac for the spots on my chin.. I applied it all over my face before bed and I woke up with a bright red face, I had had an allergic reaction. I thought it’s because the benzoyl peroxide had burned my face.
    Since then I’ve been getting pus filled nodules on my manly chin and forehead. I thought it was cystic acne so I continued to use harsh things on it and exfoliate.. until a month ago when I did some research and decided it was perioral dermatitis. I went to my GP and she confirmed it, she put me on a 2 month course of doxycycline which has improved my skin but I’m still getting new bumps and redness.
    My skin is extremely oily so I can’t wash it with just water, I’ve been using a sulfur soap which I found out contained benzyl alcohol 😩
    I actually don’t know what to do anymore and whether the damage I’ve done can be reversed so I can rid myself from this nasty condition for good.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +2

      Poor you, your skin (and you!) seem to have been through a lot in the past six years. Is it possible for you to go see a dermatologist for really specific advice? It seems like your skin barrier is severly damaged and you really need expert advice to get it back to normal again. Until you get the chance to see someone face to face, I recommend stripping back your routine to the bare minimum, like a very gentle cleanser and a barrier repairing moisturizer (and SPF of course) and leave your skin alone. Even if it is oily - that might just be a reaction that gets better if you give it some time. I would not recommend a sulfur soap at the moment, just a cream cleanser without any "actives" or fragrance and such.

      Everything I put on my face seems to irritate it, I tried CeraVe hydrating wash but it broke me out. I’m scared to even think about moisturisers. I’ve been so depressed and I only think about my skin which further exacerbates the issue 😞

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +1

      January is quite some time to go. But as hard as it may seem, try to do nothing to your skin, even if it breaks out, just leave it be for at least two weeks so it can balance itself out. Where are you from? What is the weather like right now?

    • @riamaria8754

      Doctor Anne I’m trying to be as gentle to it as possible 😩 I live in London.. and I don’t think the pollution and humidity are doing me any favours, what’s weird when I went abroad for 3 days my skin cleared!

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +2

      I would try really going for water only, or maybe an unscented cleanser, and nothing else for two weeks. No flannels/ microfibre cloths etc. either, these are physical exfoliants.
      Oh, and obviously: Don’t take advice from people too seriously that haven’t seen you face to face (like skincare people on CZcams for example, not even if they are doctors 😉) - changing the way you treat your skin too often, because I advise you to do this and then someone else tells you to do something other, is a sure way to get your skin upset! But if I were you, I wouldn’t worry about pollution, oil or anything and just leave my skin alone for a while - that will most likely be helpful in the long run.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +3

      Before applying more products, I would reduce the amount of stuff you put on your face and Strip your routine back to a simple cleanse (gentle, hydrating, no fragrance, like The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm), a hydrating Serum (again no fragrance, no actives, i.e. The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum) and a basic moisturizer (no fragrance, no actives, preferably Ceramides) and not use anything else for an extended period of time. The skin can often repair itself once we stop doing more damage.

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 5 lety +1

      It is a common myth that retinoids make your skin thinner. Retinoids increase collagen production, so skin will not get thinner when using Vitamin A. Retinyl palmitate is the weakest form of retinoids commonly found in skincare, so I don´t think it would help much though, and lastly: Three days is much too short to see any effect on the skin, good or bad (with the exception of allergic reactions of course).
      So in total: I don´t think the eye serum had anything to do with that.
      Out of curiosity, how did you notice your skin being thinner? Just by looks?

    Are chemical peels (medical grade and done by dermatologists) bad for the skin since they’re the stronger versions of chemical exfoliators and they remove the first layers of skin and hence the protective barrier?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  Před 4 lety +3

      Not per se. If done maybe once every few weeks, they are great, but used weekly or done on top of regular exfoliation at home, they can be too much. Exfoliation is not a bad thing at all, in fact we all need some help there as we age, it is more that these days we tend to overdo it, because it is so widely available.
      The chemical peels done by a dermatologist are usually done with a reason after someone diagnosed your skin - just make sure you tell the person what else you are using at home so they can take that into consideration when planning the treatment.

      So the answer is: Vitamin C used correctly does not damage the skin barrier, but it has the potential to when used incorrectly. Does that make sense?

    Help!
    I treat my skin very gentle for a long time. No physical exfoliators, not too many products, mainly moisturizing ingredients (galactomyces, snail mucous, Niacinamid). I use the calm series cleanser by Paula's choice and the holy frog aha cleanser in the evenings only, I don't rub my skin and it never iched or went red or felt dry with this routine. But since I need to wear masks from time to time, not all day long, I have massic breakouts around my nose, around my mouth and on tge chin (there they are cystic). What is the problem? Is it the mask rubbing, did I somehow destroy thy lipid barrier? I stayed waey from silicone, I never use sls or other harsh surfactants (only on my plates in the kitchen). I added a skin barrier cream from cosrx now and grapeseed oil as a very thin layer on top (for the extra linoleic acid). When I skip the aha cleanser my skin gets bumpy tiny spots in the areas, that develop into pimples. So I don't dare to skip it, to keep my pores unclogged. What else could be wrong? It's over a month now and it's not getting better. Can it be the stress alone? I had stress before but never reacted thus way?

      You might suffer from maskne, a condition caused by the friction and the trapped oil and dirt from wearing a mask. Look for the video on that topic on here by LabMuffin Beauty for example, she has tips.
      Your breakouts could be due to other reasons as well though, hormonal changes for example. Have you considered seeing someone about it, like an esthetician or a doctor? That would provide great personalized advice.

    I understand you probably don’t reply to messages on here as you must get so much but I wanted to try as I’m at breaking point now and thought you would maybe have some advice. I cleared all my acne using TO’s Niacinamide and Peeling solution. I have suffered with body dysmorphia over my acne for years and looking back now my skin was completely healed using this method but I got so focused on silly things because of my body dysmorphia that I bought the PC BHA 2%. I stupidly used it everyday, twice a day, everything felt great then out of nowhere I was breaking out in tiny tiny bumps all over my face, I assumed it was purging and continued to use it along with the Cerave SA cleanser morning and night, I now know this was just far too harsh on my skin. The tiny bumps became big under the skin pimples, pustules, blackheads, you name it and every inch of my face is covered in bumps of some kind. They’re itchy and it seems like anything I do is making it worse. I then got a really bad sunburn (I know I’m sorry 😖) I just didn’t feel the sun and sat out for 3 hours, my face and legs started to swell over the next few days and my legs turned purple. It has been over a month since this happened and my legs are still purple! I stopped using all my actives shortly after the sun burn happened, so have been free of them for about 5/6 weeks now. My skin is still covered in acne, I switched to Cerave’s Hydrating Cleanser, only used it at night time, water in the morning, I also purchased TO’s Hyalouronic Acid and Cosrx Snail Mucin Essence to add moisture that my skin lost through the damage. I was previously using Cerave’s moisturising lotion which didn’t clog my pores at all, but any research suggested I should use a gel moisturiser to heal my skin so I got the Clinique Moisture Surge and already had Neutrogenas Hydro Boost Gel as well as Cerave Moisture Cream. I don’t know where I’m going wrong, I suffered with severe depression and suicidal thoughts from my acne for years and was the happiest I’ve ever been in my life when it cleared and now it’s the worst it’s ever been. I’m not leaving the house and avoiding all my family. Could you please give me any advice on the situation? I’m trying not to scratch my neck as I’m typing this as the big, red under the skin pimples are killing me! Makeup doesn’t cover it and I was feeling so confident in going foundation free for about a year before all this!! I know you’re super busy but I beg of you to give me a minute of your time to help me, I don’t know where else to turn as the dermatologist me I’ve visited in the last for my acne just prescribed me antibiotics which really damaged my gut.

      I am really sorry to hear about your struggles, but other than stopping the actives and being gentle on the skin (and not switching products based on someones suggestion, but stick with a gentle, basic regime for the next months!) there is not much I can do for you through the internet. You need to see a dermatologist specialised in acne and on top of that someone to talk about the effects acne had on your mental health.
      Treating acne and the effects is has on the body and mind is a long and complex that needs professional, in person guidance.

      While calamin is used to help with itchiness, it would not be my first choice because it contains Zinc and can be drying out the skin even further. But I am not able to give you proper advice via the CZcams comment section, skin issues always need a face to face consultation.
