Summary of treating a damaged skin barrier:
1. Cleanse once a day with cool water using a gentle cleanser.
2. Minimize the number of products that you use. Keep it simple.
3. Use occlusive products.
4. Take a temporary break from exfoliating acids, retinoids, etc.
5. Use a humidifier.
6. Wear gloves and moisturize your hands.
7. Vaseline/petrolatum is your friend.
Thank you!
Thanks
What about retinol damage specifically damage like: deep cutting lines, a heavy sagginess atound jowls, jaw line, cracked lines under eyes? Darker n more age spots. Ppl usually list redness, breakouts as retinol damage...mine seems more drastic. I'm doing all in ur list, 3rd week into repair n no change... thanks
@@charvanr312 wait but wouldn’t that be sun damage rather than retinol one? I have never heard of retinol on its own causing hyperpigmentation or skin sagging but not using sunscreen while using retinol will cause that...
thank you for this hehe🥰❤️🙌🏻
I visited my dermatologist today. I used all the new dermatological words I learned from you. He was happy!
What a great commendation to our beloved Dr. Dray!
Who would dislike Dr Drays videos? Lmao like "Ugh I hate receiving helpful information for free"

you’re such a godsend. i feel enriched getting to have access to all of this factual information and put it into practice where necessary. never stop doing this!
That color sweater is beautiful on her! This softer indirect lighting also looks lovely ☺️
I would take a dermatology class taught by Dr Dray
You could go to actual med school
You’re getting it with all of her videos….for free
Wow perfect timing with this video.
46 years old never had skin issues woke up with major eczema on my neck. Luckily I have been following you for a couple of years now I knew exactly what to do. Reached for myCERAVE healing ointment and slathers that sucker on.
Thanks Dr Dray for keeping us educated! 🧡💜
Sometimes I feel like you can read my mind, I needed this video! Thank you!
I can't believe how much I've learned in the past week of watching your videos. I wasn't on youtube often, but i stumbled upon Cassandra Bankson (loveeee her!) one night when looking into oil cleansing. Through her I heard about you. Now I've just been watching your videos all day every day because there's just so much to learn and I love love skincare.
You’ve become my calming friend during COVID - Thank you 😊 PS.. I have my 75 year old mom on moisturizers and sunscreen now per Dr Dray. She told me her legs were so soft now..just like they were in high school ❤️It’s amazing what a good moisturizing and sunscreen routine will do!
This lady is a real sweetheart and cares because she’s been through it all. Bless her for helping us. A good soul. 💜
*me with usually oily skin that’s currently dying in this winter* 🥶 this video was made for me.
Same!

Same! It has been driving me crazy ! I have never used this much moisturizers. I usually wake up with a super oily forehead, now it feels like sandpaper ...
I've been there but that was years before this video :"
100%!! So annoying lol I actually miss my oily skin, it didn’t involve pain, burning, and redness even with following Dr. Dray’s advice although it’s better. I’d prefer my summertime oiliness. Maybe I just miss the summer ☀️😭
Omg... after 3 years of suffering with a neck rash, many appointments with an allergist, PCP, dermatologist and several eczema creams that failed to heal my skin. I am FINALLY on my way to a full recovery by following your advice! The Albolene and Vaseline are life savers. Who would have thought relief was $15 away.?!?! Thank you so much, Dr. Dray!
I was looking at photos of me from when I first started watching your videos two years ago compared to just last month....You have saved my skin from the skincare market and the sun. Sunscreen, Albolene, no fragrance on the face, and cerave... and people are calling me "miss" again lol
Thank you so much for your dedication to your videos and for sharing your extensive knowledge free of charge.
@R Rooster (Sorry this is long) So I use Albolene first to melt away the makeup and sunscreen, rubbing it in like lotion, and then I gently tissue it off with kleenex (Don't use cloths or wipes as they can irritate the skin) and then in order to remove the Albolene residue and the remaining gunk on my face, I use a very mild, gentle cleanser like Aveeno Gentle Oat cleanser. Finally, since Albolene and very gentle cleanser can still leave a little bit of makeup behind, I use Neutrogena fragrance free body oil to wash off all the left over stuff. Rinse and Repeat with the oil lol. I wear slightly heavier makeup so you may not need the oil step. Your face won't feel squeaky but that's good! And if your face is super damaged and irritated, I find Eucerin Healing Cream is great and acts as a temporary barrier. It's the richest cream I've used.
You've helped me immensely with my painfully dry hands. I'm embarrassed because the value of your work here so exceeds 5 bucks! My deepest thanks Dr. Dray!
Wow, you basically described my skin in my late 20s. I had red patches all over my face, and I, being naive, followed the influencer trend of exfoliating because "it renews your skin". Needless to say, I started using Cerave when I started watching you and my skin has never been smoother and better. I wish I knew about you in my 20s.
Currently 28 and experiencing this :,)
What kind of Cerave are you using? can you tell us the full name of the product?
Same..
Ironically i damaged my skin barrier by using cerave lotion
@@nanoahmmedalzaherysoderpor1678 don't use it blindly .. it made my skin worst I was using cerave sa cleanser. I have used 3 Of their different cerave. All of them are worst

Dr. Dray out here doing the lords work!
Thank you so much for your videos. I know I can come to your channel and find info on everything and anything derm related. You’ve been far more helpful in my skin and hair journey than my own doctor. 💕
For someone who has always had oily to combination skin through adolescence right up until late 20s/early 30s, coming out of lock down and somehow completely destroying my skin barrier and experiencing the wrath of dry, flaky, red, irritated and stinging skin, Dr Dray helped me immensely! Thankyou for your no nonsense, non gimmicky and factual information because of her recommendations my skin is back to normal once again - For anyone suffering from a damaged skin barrier and you've ended up at this video, The thing that worked for me was cutting my skin care right back to a simple 3 step routine - Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, Cerave moisturising cream and SPF -
That has happened to me. I completely destroyed my skin barrier! Started off with PD and then morphed into a full face of sore, red, spotty and dry skin. I couldn't take SPF or anything like it. No actives, not even vit c. cerave has helped me get through the worst of it, and only now, 7 months later, I'm beginning to heal. What a ride. Avene Ciclafete also helped at night. Cerave for the win though, never thought i'd say that after years of expensive skincare.
Dr. Dray you are the sole reason I now wear sunscreen every day. Thank you
You have no idea how much you have helped me. I truly apréciate your videos
I’ve been taking a break from my retinoid and Cerave SA face wash since watching this video. Also have been using my Aveeno Itch Relief Balm (same exact ingredients as the Aveeno Baby Nighttime Balm that Dr. Dray recommended in the description) and my skin has improved so much 😄. I was getting flaky and had sensitivity even while using a sensitive skin friendly moisturizer. Acne hasn’t returned as she said. I will try to use my retinoid only a few days per week. Thank you for the video!
Hi, did you get more breakouts because of the damaged barrier? I cant tell as its not itchy or red just always have active breakouts on my chin 😢
Cheeka are slightly red but rest of face fine apart from inflamed spots. So not sure if it's my barrier, purging from tret i started 6 wks ago or hormonal ahh
for a damaged skin barrier, can we still use acne spot treatment?
@@aria8965 hey ! How's your skin condition now ?I'm facing the exact situation .
You have the most fabulous skincare content on CZcams. Thank you for keeping it sweet and simple...dont change! Xxoo from Toronto:)
Vanicream for the win! Vanicream is a staple in our home. My little boy suffers from life-threatening food allergies and it’s a safe moisturizer (no worries for nut oils or milk derivatives) for him too. I use the moisturizing cream during winter and the lotion during summer.
Perfect timing ! I live in Canada, I take walks outside and I just woke up with redness and itching this morning (YAY). I'm hesitating to cleanse it since it burns really bad when I wet my skin.
I bought the Levoit humidifier a few years ago. I remember you recommended it. I love it and you don't need those filters that get dirty in record time. I recommend it!
The part I overlook the most is definately my nose. I always forget about protecting the corners of the nostrils when applying exfoliants and retinol.
It is painful and worst is not to know what is happening.
Yes! Everything stung: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen...any and everything I put on my face! I broke out daily too!
thank you for the video! I think my barrier has been damaged from using adapolene for the first time. just began the video so i'm excited to dig in!
This was right on time. This totally help me understand why all of a sudden my routine was stinging and why my neck was itching. Time to back off the retinal and slathering on the Vaseline.
I had similar problem. I am now using Simple Aloe triple moisturizer-it’s a little sticky but it eliminated the sting, rash & wrinkles caused by the irritation.
I am soooo glad I found this video! I've been suffering from acne on my chin and I guess I've overdone with different skin treatments for acne (both treatments by estheticians and at-home), and now I'm suffering from a damaged skin barrier. My face feels super sensitive and flares up and feels itchy even when I do some things which didn't use to cause problems, like washing my face with tap water, heat from a hair-dryer, walking in the sun even with SPF50 suncreen on, using hyaluronic acid serums that I've been using for ages... I looked at the list of products that you recommend for restoring the skin barrier, and luckily I already had CeraVe moisturising cream, but I used it only for my body. I decided to put it on my face and I felt instant relief! I couldn't believe that such an affordable product could do wonders for my sensitized skin and be so soothing! Thank you, Dr. Dray! Now I'm your fan!
perfect timing! currently repairing my barrier
Enjoy!
skin update?
This video contains great and useful information. I'd been suffering with a persistent patch of eczema on my lower cheek and jawline that I absolutely couldn't rid myself of. Following Dr. Dray's advice, namely, taking a break from my facial routines (serums, retinoids, various washes) and going without makeup for about a week, and using an occlusive, colloidal oat-based eczema healing cream (Eucerin) I'm finally free of the eczema. As Dr. Dray has mentioned in the past, the healing cream I used was for face AND body, I didn't get hung up on the marketing aspect of using only a "face" product on my face. A body product on my face worked just fine, maybe the richness of the product is what I needed on my face (and ounce per ounce was cheaper too). Plus it didn't break me out, which was my main concern.
I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. This week I have been suffering from a compromised skin barrier due to - among other things I’m sure- the bitter cold Midwest weather. I just watched your video, bought the Cicaplast, and my face feels a THOUSAND times better. Just like that. I’m sure you could hear my sigh of relief all the way to Texas 🤣. Thank you so much for the great tips. You’re the best.
Yaaaaaasssss this is exactly what I need right now!

@@DrDrayzday do you credit it to retin a and sunscreen ?
Thank you so much for this information. My skin problems (dry, reactive, rosacea, stings, and occasional acne) make sense now. My (male) dermatologist took one look at my face and told me I need a laser and handed me a business card for a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. That was it. That was his advice. Not one suggestion for something less radical or less expensive.
I appreciate you and your detailed explanations and product recommendations.
Fellow rosacea person here: my top products, in case you need recs...
Cleanser: Vanicream face cleanser (if wearing water resistant spf) or Aveeno calm and restore cleanser (if non water-resistant spf)
Serum applied to wet skin: either the ordinary niacinamide or Purito unscented serum
Moisturizer: aveeno oat gel moisturizer 🙌🏼
They have helped my rosacea sooo much, even being a teacher in a mask 6+ hours a day right now.

Yep barrier cream and sun screen is the two most important for reducing rosacea
Thanks for this video. I thought I was purging from retinol for months, but my skin barrier was damaged! I had to stop using my Clarisonic and stop washing my face in the shower due to hard water in TX. It's slowly getting better, but I'm also on a new Dr. prescribe skincare regimen. No one told me that my skin barrier was damaged. I found out by researching online!
This is the video I have been waiting for!! Thank you for the product recommendations!!
The Cerave on the tub is what I can say really repaired my moisture barrier. I hesitated at first because I am oily and I have severe breakouts that time, but I stuck to it because I learned that fixing ur moisture barrier is the key to healing most skin conditions (recurring breakouts on my case). Thank YOU DR DRAY!☺️
The moisturizing cream or night cream?
whats the name of the moisturizer?
Thank you for reminding me that I should be gentle with my skin. Somehow I keep forgetting about that
Seeing all products listed and those timestamps at the desc box made me subscribe to this channel 😍
I was just about to ask about slugging when Vaseline was brought up, but Dr Dray was ahead of the game! Thank you for clarifying!
what is slugging?
I swear it’s like she reads my mind because she always comes out with videos answering my questions on time 🙌🏼 thank you ☺️
I have the cicaplast balm when my skin gets super dry or sensitive.
Also, lately (due to a new scar), I’m using the Cosmedix Rescue balm & mask. It’s AMAZING and doesn’t clog your pores. I’m prone to acne and this balm never caused me pimples.
Also, for those who suffer dry nostrils in the snow, I recommend Ayr nasal saline gel with aloe :)
My husband is prone to nosebleeds. He LIVES on Ayr Nasal Gel in the winter months!!
How long did you use the cicaplast before it showed results?
I have always been afraid of occlusives, because I get clogged pores. As I get older the skin around my mouth has felt tight and dry. I really appreciate this video. Time to heal my barrier :)
Any solution
The best one I use is Nivea in the tin , its fantastic!
Used it since age 3, and I'm 48 now. So that's 45 years of continued use, day & night. I am extremely dry in the face, though. First got recommended to us by my internist, and my mom had it at home anyway. :)
You’re looking beautiful as ever, Dr. Dray 💜

Oh gosh, I literally love you, Dr. Dray! You saved my skin on many occasions. Now, for a week or so, my skin is in a bad condition after antibiotics. I started fixing the barrier yesterday and we will see in a week or so if I need to visit a dermatologist (I hope it's not fungal).

I always sleep with cotton gloves (maybe in summer if it's too hot I will not wear them) (and ofc I put hand cream before the gloves) and it's helped a lot the eczema that I got in the winter months.
Hey, I had to reach out and say thanks ! I’ve been struggling about 2 years with red skin above lip and nose area that was getting worse as time goes on and would peel and texture was different. Watched your video unfortunately after using hot water, face scrub, LOL. Decided to moisturize and try the vaseline trick and woke up next morning and was socked at how much redness had improved from the vaseline. Started following your recommendations and its definitely getting better after 2 days. Ended up getting the barrier cream, I’m so happy. 😀. THANK YOU !
Perfect video to see right out of the gate this morning. I live in Wisconsin, the current temperature is 5. Wind chill is negative 4. Love this state but it is the devil to skin
Hi again, Dr. Dray, I learned today about moisture barrier. I use the Hydrophor ointment for my skin. I lather a lot of it on my atopic dermatitis site and cover my legs with saran wrap overnight. It helps in keeping away my fingernails off them.
Love all your helpful advice. Keep them coming. Best and God bless 💖
I needed to hear this I didn’t realize I was using too many exfoliaters in my skin care routine Cerave Acne face wash, Ordinary toner, paulas choice bha exfoliator,

Good afternoon Dr. Dray & skincare fans! 💜
You too!!
Urea (gold bond face & body line), Shea butter, rosehip seed oil, and Aquaphor have actually really done wonders to help my moisture barrier
I went from la roche to differin for adapalene. The former was easy & gradual while the latter was very bam! So currently, my moisturizers make my skin feel like wax almost. I needed this video!
Great video. You know it’s real advice when you are told to use LESS products vs more! BTW, Dr D , love your ring.
If you like foam, foaming on your hands before putting the cleanser on your face help to reduce friction. Even though I don't have any skin barrier problem, I am doing that for anti-ageing.
i foam first too ! it makes the cleanser less harsh imo
Currently trying to restore my moisture barrier and everything I used made my face burn and sting. I switched to just using Vanicream Gentle cleanser and Vanicream moisturizing cream and my skin is already feeling better.
I just bought some vanicream last night. I heard dr dray recommend it a long time ago and kept it written down. No issues clogging your pores or anything?
My skin barrier is not in existence. The only moisturizer it can handle is Aveeno calm and restore.Even those really gentle moisturizers like Vanicream or CeraVe burn and sting.Of course mask does not help and all that dry air inside and outside.
@@FL5_OGryan405 I’ve never had Vanicream clog my pores. It makes a very nice lather and it certainly feels like your skin is clean while not feeling overly dried out. I hope it works for you as much as it has worked for me!
@@ewakonopko9258 the aveeno calm and restore gel cream is amazing 🤩 I love it too and I haven’t noticed burning or stinging with it.

The video I needed 😮🌹 thank you Andrea.
Thanks for the video. Very informative! I think I am suffering with a damaged skin barrier.
A couple questions:
- How long does it usually take to repair one's moisture barrier?
- Should I use the ointment instead of moisturiser? Or use the ointment on top of moisturiser?
- Out of the recommendations you have listed in the description box (cleanser, moisturiser, and ointment) - which one do you personally think is best?
Thank you :)

thank god for this video. I've been trying to figure out wtf was going on with my skin the last couple days. basically introduced too many new products (BHA, retinol) to my skin and over exfoliated, over did it in general. all was fine until I spent a Saturday out and about (with SPF of course and reapplication) but when I came home and showered, all my regularly used skin products caused a burning/stinging sensation. really screwed up my otherwise perfectly fine skin, and im paying the price for sure. going to take these tips and get back to normal asap.
Any update
@@self_lovecare I stopped using the products, went back to basics -- used aveeno oat cleanser (super great for sensitive skin) and one serum and then cerave moisturizer. the burning sensation stopped after a week and then I reintroduced the new products again but more slowly, once a week max.
@@ivyb. Which serum are you talking about
@@self_lovecare I use ordinary hyularonic acid
How did you read my mind? I realized when I did my PM routine last night that my barrier was compromised 😭 I think I'm finally gonna buy that LRP product.
You look really good Dr Dray!!
So, I bought that Aveeno cleanser talked about in this video, my skin type is normal and I am struggling with hormonal acne. For me, this cleanser was too gentle. It didn't cleanse my skin all the way and it also left a film. This was just my personal experience and something to take into consideration if you have the same skin type and are also struggling with hormonal acne. Btw, I'm not wasting it, I'm giving it to my sister. On another note, I just bought Aveeno's Triple Oat Face Serum that was recommended in another video. I hope it works and wish me luck!
How are you liking the serum? I tried it and the oat gel moisturizer again tonight and it makes my eyelids and around my nose sting! My face also felt kind of tight and dry after they soaked into my skin! This is the third time I’ve tried the products out and I don’t think my skin likes them😭
@@SarahhhBeth I've only been using the moisturizer for a couple of days but, it's working nicely for me! The serum is working really well so far, as well. Calming my irritated and inflamed skin, it also made my acne a lot less itchy. I'm sorry these products aren't working for you, hopefully you find effective products soon!! Have a nice day:)
What about severely radiated skin? I am 3 years out from radiation and feel like have tried everything!! I am still so dry and painfully itchy. Aquaphor, Vanicream, Dermasil, Betamethasone, Cerave, oils, you name it. I use either Cetaphil or Dove sensitive skin to wash. Next on the list is the LRP Cicaplast.
Great video!!
I had a clogged tear duct that was causing tears to pretty much constantly run down my cheek for several days. The damage to my skin was awful, and it took so long to repair. The only thing that worked was moisturizing and then coating it in Aquaphor. I hated how it felt, but it worked.
Happy Wednesday Dr. Dray 💙
Same to you!
After a black mask my skin barrier was gone. I had an huge allergic reaction, swollen etc. I started using Cerave and my skin is so much better

Since I've been following you and Angie Hot and Flashy, my skin barrier stays right where it should! And I save money!!! Thank you! Hope you are well. Happy Inauguration Day!!! ❤️
Lori can I ask which products you use? I love Angie Hot and Flashy but it seems I’ve used too many retinols and maybe too many active products and have damaged my skin barrier, especially on my neck. I’m 49 so I feel like I need to use some actives like vitamin c, retinol etc to help with aging but trying to find a good place between Angie’s and Dr. Drays recommendations.
@@K1111A Hi Kim - first, I'm 61 with normal to dry skin. I don't do the exact same thing every day because I've learned to listen to my skin but in general I double cleanse in the evening. First with Clinique's Take The Day Off cleansing balm and then CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. While my face is still damp I put on Hyaluronic Acid. If it's a night when I'm planning on using my Curology, I will put on a light coat of moisturizer (Drmtlgy Peptide Night Cream) and then my Curology. I'm currently up to .07%. In a half an hour I put on another layer of moisturizer which is generally a Korean brand I buy on Amazon called Sukayaka Suhada Cream. Not the lotion. It's too thin. I also use an eye cream called Revisions DEJ Eye Cream. If I'm not putting on Curology, I just use my eye cream and CeraVe Night Cream. I did used to just use the CeraVe PM but once the heater came on, I switched to the CeraVe Night Cream. In the morning I just wash my face off with a damp cloth and again while my skin is damp I put on Hyaluronic Acid first to seal in the moisture. Next is The Ordinary's Vitamin C, Argeriline, I use the caffeine serum under my eyes, Matrixyl 10%, Timeless CoQ10, Revisions DEJ Eye Cream, then a moisturizer and then sunscreen which I use Elta MD. Lately I have been putting Dearskin Tranex Dear Serum Tranexamic Acid on my forehead to help with some sunspots. The only other thing I add is on the nights I'm not using Curology I use a Glycolic Acid Toner. If I have some flaking from Curology, I will occasionally add a physical exfoliant from Drmtlgy before I moisturize. It sounds like quite a bit but it's working and I'm happy with my results. If I can answer any other questions, feel free to ask. There are also less expensive alternatives for the eye cream like just using regular moisturizer or the Sukayaka Suhada has an eye cream that also has urea in it and it really hydrates but I really love the Revisions DEJ Eye Cream. It has really softened the fine lines under my eyes. Best wishes.
@@K1111A One last thing, if you don't want to use Curology, I highly recommend Osmosis and you can speak to Leah Parks who owns Skin Beautiful RX. She is sooo helpful and when you buy, you get a discount for your next purchase. I sometimes use Renew which is their strongest Retinol Serum on a night when I don't think I should use Curology. This is as defined as I can make this process because I sometimes but The Buffet serum or use a hydrating mask to treat myself. I can always tell after I've washed my face what it needs by if it feels a bit dry or not. If you try this or just try not to overdo acids or retin-anything, you'll be able to tell what you need.
Thank you for this video. I used an enzyme facial cleanser sample from Ipsy and it made me skin so itchy, dry, red and irritated and slathering on moisturizers was not helping. Going to the store now!
