    Great vid. I couldn't get my optical drive out for some reason. I had to insert a pin into the manual release hole on the optical drive and it came free. I definitely miss the old HDD and RAM access ports laptops used to have.

    Really annoys me they make it so hard to upgrade these days , getting as bad as apple. what was wrong with the easy access hatch on old laptops. First thing i do now if i am considering a new laptop is look for an upgrade video on you tube. if its a pain to do its off my list.

      Same for me. What I have noticed for HP, is that the cheaper the model, the more complicated it is to disassemble it. Even worse that I would like to clean the fan at least yearly, which takes me more than an uour to do with cheap hp.

    This HP 250 G6 is a big shit. Upgrade RAM is nightmare. Worst design ever. Open case in video is too easy. In real it is a big problem. You must go to service. They must earn money. When you open case this approach plastic material is damage after 2 times. Any more HP.

    If you're able to answer, just wanted to ask because I've seen some conflicting information: does using an m.2 SSD work? I got this computer for my mother because its cheap and all she does is browse the web, and I had seen some spec sheets online from HP (hidden away on the website as usual of course) about an m.2 drive BUT it not working with another hard drive in there or something along those lines. I had asked the guys at microcenter as well (i build my own PCs and go there a lot) if they had any knowledge and he had none whatsoevere, in fact he said I knew more about it than him.
    So what I"d like to ask before I put an SSD in here for my moms is:does the m.2 slot work WHEN THE OTHER HARD DRIVE IS INSTALLED STILL? This is what was confusing me on the LISTED HP SPEC SHEETS (of course they cant make it simple) saying basically that the SATA drive has a pass through and vice versa so that only the 2.5" or m.2 works at once. So my question then again is do you have this working with the old drive installed AS WELL AS an m.2 drive? Or do you have the 2.5" removed and just use the m.2? Or after making this video would you recommend a normal 2.5" SSD instead because of possible issues? I dont know a lot about these laptops from HP /Dell/etc anymore as I haven't used them for years, and the last laptop I picked for my mom was a Lenovo with MUCH MORE DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS. The HP specifications is honestly a joke, and in my opinion designed to be intentionally confusing so as to dissuade you from any upgrades so youre forced to buy a higher end model, even when all you need is this setup plus an SSD.
    Also: WHAT DID YOU REMOVE FROM THE m.2 SLOT BEFORE YOU PUT IN THE HARD DRIVE? Was that a WIFI CARD? I need wifi on this laptop and would rather put a 2.5" in and keep it if its a m.2 wifi than replace it and be stuck having to come up with some janky solution.
    Sorry for the questions its just hard to see in the video the specifics of what is both in there as well as what you removed.
    Finally: is it a standard 2280 m.2 drive? Or some weird just to be difficult?
    Honestly the fact that its a 5400rpm drive is a JOKE to me, a 7200 would have been much better, or even the option for a small SSD or even a hybrid drive. But whatever. If the m.2 drive works, i can get a nice cheap adata for about 50-70$, all I need is a boot drive and some key components.
    Thanks in advance if youre able to get back to me.

      @select_input Před 3 lety +2

      I know this is an old comment, but in case it helps someone else, I just disassembled one of these and the model I worked on had a standard 2.5" SATA board installed instead of the M.2 adapter board, so there is only one spot to install an internal hard drive by default. Different variants shipped with either 2.5" SATA drives or M.2 drives, which is probably why you saw conflicting information. There may be a compatible aftermarket sled to install a second hard drive in place of the optical drive.
      The card that is removed in the video is another M.2 drive. The wireless card on this unit is the card visible at an angle by the CPU blower fan in the upper right corner.
      The drive in the video does appear to be a 2280 M.2 drive.

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky Před 3 lety +1

       @SELECT INPUT You'll never believe this, but thank you so much for your response. I was looking to upgrade this actually the PAST WEEK, after waiting several years, and again, conflicting information. So honestly, believe it or not, but I was again watching this video the the past week.
      What I am unsure about, and maybe you can help me here, is with this following question: is the m.2 slot occupied by the wireless adapter? I have seen some things saying that the wireless adapter is in the m.2 drive bay. If this is so, that means I need to swap out the 2.5" drive for a 2.5" SSD (which I have) instead of using an m.2 drive alongside the spinning rust drive in there, meaning the total storage of the PC will be something like 160GB (which is the EXTRA SSD I have). She doesn't use even like 5% of the storage currently available, so this wont be some big issue. I was just wondering if that is the case or not.
      Also, how difficult is it to get access to the 2.5" drive bay? Do I need to disassemble a HUGE AMOUNT of the case to get to it? Or is it just a few screws, pop off the back panel, and I'm there?
      Again, sorry for the multiple quesations, but I figured I'd ask you now while you were reading and responding all these years late,r rather than pass up the chance.
      Yes, it the post was a LONG TIME AGO, but again, believe it or not, but I was JUST WATCHING ALL OF THESE VIDEOS about this laptop AGAIN this past week. It's actually insane what the timing was on this, so thank you so much.

    • @select_input
      @select_input Před 3 lety +1

      @@mcnamaraky Oh man glad that I posted!
      So to answer the first question - nope, the M.2 slot and the wireless card slot are totally separate, the wireless card is in a Mini PCIe slot (that's the one stuck up in the top right by the fan). So if you know it's a 2.5" drive now, I would just swap that with the extra 2.5" SSD you already have, otherwise you need to buy a totally separate M.2 adapter board to replace the existing board.
      And yes, to get to that 2.5" bay, you do exactly what is shown in the video - take out the case screws (including the four under the rubber feet, just peel up the side toward the outside), then pop out the CD/DVD drive (easier if you press "Eject" while it's powered on, then leave it hanging out when you turn it off).
      Then use a plastic spudger, old credit card, guitar picks, etc to gently pry up all sides of the plastic except the top side where the hinge is - it'll lift out that direction. Don't try to pry the clips on the hinge side, they're not meant to pop out, just slide up, otherwise they'll snap off.
      Then you just need to unscrew the drive caddy, which is the leftmost screw, and you can gently slide it out and take the old drive out and put your SSD in.
      Hope that helps!

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky Před 3 lety +1

      @@select_input It does help, thank you. I do IT work, but I have yet to take the laptop apart. So, I was rewatching this video just to see how much of a pain in the ass it was going to be to take it apart to put the 2.5" SSD in there.
      I DO actually happen to have a m.2 drive in this PC right now, that is completely freed up, but, I'd rather use this old 2.5" if I can, and keep the m.2 in this PC. It IS A SATA m.2 drive, NOT an NVME. So, normally it wouldn't even be a difference at all; however, the 2.5" I'm going to put in there? It is a SUPER OLD SSD, I'm talking like first or second generation SSD where it isn't even saturating the SATA bus (its like 320MB/s instead of 550, which is fully saturated SATA connection). However, it will still SMOKE the spinning rust drive that's in there now, without any question. Again, it's for my mom, and she won't miss that extra storage space almost at all. However, I do plan on taking the spinning drive out of there, buying a cheap like 20$ enclosure, and turning that drive into an USB external drive for her, in case she does want some extra space.
      Thanks for all the info man, it is absolutely a crazy coincidence that I happened to be FINALLY getting around to doing this after like...2 years lmao. So your post did help. Again, I had read the manual for the laptop from HP, and it showed the wifi card AS being in the m.2 slot, but that might be for a different revision than this one. I dont remember which revision the manual was for.
      And also, thanks again for letting me know what a bitch taking this apart is going to be. I was hoping I wouldn't need to pry that shit apart just to put in a 2.5" drive, but oh well, it is what it is. It's tempting to put in this 500GB SATA m.2 drive in there so that she can keep the spinning rust drive, but again, she doesn't need more than the 120GB this old SSD will provide her. And, again, even though its a super old SSD, its still going to be LIGHT YEARS faster than the spinning drive she has in there. At least, I hope :D
      Your posts have been much appreciated. Again, thank you sir, and I appreciate ya and the time you made for the post!

    • @select_input
      @select_input Před 3 lety +1

      @@mcnamaraky Totally! And as long as you take your time prying it apart it’s not too bad (you kinda have to ease it around the VGA port) - biggest thing is the textured plastic. It scratches extremely easily, in case you’re worried about the appearance on the bottom.
      Best of luck!!
