Same. I see more and more dogs around off leash and out of control, and it's hard to blame the owners because they've worked with the only trainers and behaviourists available - the cookie throwers - and think they've done everything they could. In the meantime my reactive dog is in a permanent state of stress thanks to them.

@@st1g718 that's all well and good but with all due respect, aren't you letting perfect be the enemy of better with that attitude?
Sure, owners make mistakes during the early days and that isn't good enough - but Your approach risks leaving dogs anxious and reactive for the rest of their lives when owners have realised their mistakes and want to prevent a lifetime of anxiety and reactivity.
Using the correct tools in the correct way late is better than never, surely?
Ideally you should do it properly from day 1. But doing it a year late with different approaches is better than never if people aren't using ecollars inappropriately imo

I trained a 150 lbs saint Bernard, gsd, Akita (Ludo)with a very aggressive history. At 12yrs old I trained him to do sled dog work. Give them exercise and a purpose it helps build a relationship with them. Tools are important and the use is so important as well. Watching all your videos have motivated me to begin doing dog training. When I was younger I didn't see it as an option for a career. I love how in this video you break down the "how" and "why" behind the approach. Your videos have totally changed my perspective on remote collars, for dogs. Also really like your motto of using obedience to manage undesirable behaviors. There's so much/too much debate over the use of correction, among dog trainers/owners. I'm not a big fan of excessive correction, and at the same time - is it really I mean really, less stressful for a dog to live in a constant state of fear/anxiety/confusion, vs being firmly but gently told "Hey, stop that. It's ok, I'll vouch for you"? Holding them accountable for their actions is just like showing them there's another exit from the highway. One where there's less traffic/obstacles they have to maneuver around, all by themselves.

Hi Tom, I can't thank you enough for your videos and your common sense when it comes to dogs. My neighbour recently got himself a rescue dog, who is a two year old "Boxer / Queensland Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog Coss), The dog has had virtually no training in the past and has been a real handful for my neighbour to handle and spent all of his life on a long lead inside and outside of the house. My neighbour recently hurt his legs, so I volunteered to walk Charlie 4 days a week so he could get some exercise. Thanks to your videos I have been able to get Charlie to heel, sit , stay ,place, come, walk ahead of me in the bush without pulling, and pass through threshold behind me and wait for me to open doors. Charlie does this all on a lose slip leash. The only problem is Charlie is highly reactive to wildlife and is prone to suddenly pulling into his leash if something has recently passed through or suddenly flushes. He has pulled the other neighbour who walks Charlie over several times and got away from him ( he does not use a slip leash but a long lead and flat collar). I wish we could use an E collar or a Prong Collar in Australia, but they are both considered illegal. I know if I could use either, I could help Charlie more to curb his reactivity, so he could have more freedom. Charlie is very smart, extremely gentle, loving and willing to please he is just very strong, I would hate to see him sent back to the pound if I cannot teach my neighbour how to handle him. Bless you for your good advice, which has helped me to help Charlie so very much. Keep up the good fight, No Bad Dogs, Cheers, Muffy from OZ. (Australia)

Tom, you are the absolute best advocate for dogs and their safety! Shelters are full of aggressive dogs that were never told no, never corrected, and never trained and just do not know boundaries. As you say, “No Bad Dogs” but there are plenty of misguided owners. This video is also another testimony to know the breed, your abilities and your time constraints before you get that cute puppy and don’t do anything with it until it is too large for you to handle. In the end, it is always the dog that suffers and I love that you stress it is the literally dog’s life that is at stake.

Excellent video - so happy those owners went to you and got the result they needed to help save their dogs lives and not forgetting also to help prevent the possible injury to others. I think I have mentioned before that I live in one of the countries where these form of training tools (along with prong collars) are being banned (although not currently completely banned in the state I live in, however their use is restricted). Like you said the people advocating for the banning of these tools have no experience of these tools being used correctly and/or only envisage the worst case scenario of either their use or that the animal requiring these tools are not candidates for any type of training - so easy to end the dog's life rather than do anything to revise the dog's outlook and behavioural responses.

Imagine how stressful it would be for a dog to be taken from its home and quarantined in a strange kennel, not knowing anyone. The clock running while an administrator determines whether that dog lives or dies after biting someone or attacking another dog. A leash correction or a vibrating collar might add some stress but it’s momentary, unlike losing everything including its life. We owe it to our faithful companions to reinforce the behaviors we want and discourage the ones we don’t. Thank you for emphasizing what is important and empowering owners to be at their best, the lives of their dogs depend on that.

We're currently fostering an approx. 2-3yr old neutered mastiff mix. He was picked up off the street, spent 6 weeks in a boarding kennel before he was slated for euthanasia. The rescue organization took him out just in time, but he spent another 4 months in a boarding kennel while they looked for a foster home. So he's been through a lot. He's a very very sweet dog in the home and walks with us very well, but is incredibly aggressive reactive toward other dogs, as well as a demonstrated capacity for redirection on his handler (me). After a 4-week board-and-train, he's in an e-collar (Educator), prong collar (Sprenger), and muzzle (since the redirection incident). I've watched dozens of your videos to find the breakthrough technique and drill all the fundamentals into my head - we're still having issues but at least I have a starting point. These are some of the best videos and approaches I've found on CZcams - thanks for taking the time to make them!

She is most likely going through one of her fear periods
at this age they can have a very pronounced one, and I found gsd bitches, and dobies, very prone to this. Look it up, read a few articles and see if it makes sense to you. The cage issue is almost certainly anxiety and particularly separation anxiety, at night she knows you are sleeping nearby, lock her up alone in the daytime and she panics, resulting in a destructive meltdown. Sounds as if she was nervy anyway, possibly down to incorrect early raising or genetics, and her age is just feeding into this. Try to not push her too much for a while, focus on building trust and calm. She should improve as she gets older, but be careful not to give her traumatic experiences as it can lock in for life. They are very emotional sensitive dogs.

Positive reinforcement cannot be the only thing you show your dog. There has to be a balance. My Pitbull is extremely reactive around other dogs in a fearful way. He is not aggressive. We have a pet cat, chicken, and rabbit he lives with and roams around with them all day. I have been using the Herms prong on walks, but I don’t think it’s enough to get his attention to stop the behavior. Definitely looking into getting the remote collar next. It’s about finding what works for your dog. I know so many people in my neighborhood that don’t even walk their dogs because of reactivity and because they do not want to use any other tools to help other than a harness. In reality they are causing harm to their dog. What life is it for them to never get to experience the world just because they’re owner won’t take charge of them. It’s like giving up on a child. It’s not their fault, they just need guidance on how to behave. Hoping more people see that.

Great education about the e-coller. I was against it because I've seen my cousin used it disrespectfully on his German Shepherd. But seeing how it can be used properly is great. Glad it makes a difference to save dogs.

Excellent, well edited video. So glad to watch you supporting the great voices of Ed Frawley of Leerburg and Ivan Balabanov of Training Without Conflict who have been “doggedly” making the world aware of the disastrous consequence of positive only training. E- collars (remote collars) can save the lives of dogs, not only the aggressive ones who could be euthanized, as you demonstrated and explained, but also those who won’t come when called and run into the road and get killed or run into the woods and get lost. So many reasons to support BALANCED TRAINING where consequences for bad behavior are the stressful equivalent of taking away your kid’s phone when they don’t do their homework. All consequences are stressful, that’s the point!

This is great! EDUCATION is key 👏
The only knowledge I had of an ecollar or prong collar were the horrible stories. After watching so many of Tom’s videos, I now use the Dogtra 280c on my 10 month old Kelpie. We now enjoy off leash fun at the beach. I wish I could utilise a prong but they are prohibited in my country 🇩đŸ‡ș and banned in my state. Why? Lack of that golden word; education. Thanks Tom 👌

That was excellent Tom! This is possibly the most important educational video you've produced. Very well done, everything in a nutshell. Clear, calmly spoken, non-dramatic, very reasonable and very accessible to people.
I'd encourage anyone with a hard dog in conflict with any group, authority or organization to forward this particular video to that organization. Too many dogs being put down, and too many other pets being killed and bites on humans by dogs owned by people who do not feel comfortable taking responsibility. People with hard dogs shouldn't be put between a rock and a hard place.

As always thank you so much for your informative videos. I get grief from people who see a prong collar on our re-homed highly reactive GSD. The thing is I corrected her for less than 5 minutes the first time using the collar been on a loose lead since. We go hiking, play in rivers and lakes, walk the neighborhood, she is a WAY happier more confident dog. She’s turned into just a love muffin. I really want to come to NY and take remote collar training. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

Great video, as always! I have a GSD and have put in much work with my dog. I saw early signs of aggression when she was 10 months old. I immediately got my dog into training. Getting a dog requires commitment and consistency, especially with training. The owner of the Tibetan Mastiff needs to continue working with his dog. I don't want to judge him, but he needs to realize that his dog is a liability. I am very surprised his dog is alive after having a biting history. I'm glad he came to you Tom for help.

What Tom wasn't able to show was the long term program of rebuilding trust and confidence that comes with the obedience part of the training once the aggression is controlled. You can then teach the dog to think for himself rather than just react. Granted there are cases that will take a long time but I've seen it happen and made a huge difference in a dog's life when used correctly. The challenge is there's a large population who will not use it correctly but those ppl wouldn't likely watch this video. Great work Tom!

Mostly use the beep. He is super friendly, but having a high dog running at you can be scary. So the beep helps him calm it down, so he is more approachable. So thanks for educational video to help people understand that it's a tool and not harmful.

I love my e- collar I have 3 white Shepherd s and it has saved their lives a few times , I had 2 pit bull arab cross dogs run on to our property and of course my dogs wanted to defend their property and horses I hit vibrate n command come now and all 3 ran back to me immediately had I not had the e collars I’m sure a couple of my dogs would be dead or severely injured. I’m so sad that they are banning them I’ve had them for years and only ever need them now as backup incase of emergency situations as my dogs listen and they are happy when I pull the collars on because they know it means they will be running free on the beach or the bush . We have deadly snakes in Australia too so I can stop a curious dog from getting bitten and dieing . I can say these e collars are life changing as your training is , you have helped me so much with my communication with my dogs and understanding their needs.
