This used to happen to me all the time. The best coping mechanism, I’ve found, is to have “one place” where a single item goes, and never move the item away from it. For example, I will keep my keys (when not in my left pocket) on my bedside table. If I change clothes, I ensure at the time that I transfer all items from every pocket into the corresponding pocket of my new clothes. It helps a lot when you only have to remember one thing rather than keep track of where everything is at all times.
I do this with my keys too! Keys and earbuds right pocket, wallet left, phone back pocket. And then when something falls out because I was sitting weird and I can't find it immediately, I panic
It helps so much to have “one place” for me because when my brain gets distracted I’ll put it there via force of habit more times than not (after practicing for a while)
That works as long as you don't put the keys down somewhere else in haste. Because my thoughts are racing in every direction, keys become of less importance than the crisis at hand. I even say to myself. "This is a mistake I'll regret. I'm not going to remember I put them here!". And, of course, I don't remember and have to tear the entire place apart.
Get a key bowl and keep it next to the front door! I used to lose my keys LITERALLY all the fucking time. My Dad got so frustrated driving home to let me inside all the time that he installed a lockbox for a copy of the house key so I would always be able to get inside the house, even if I lost my keys. That lasted for about two weeks, then the spare key disappeared, it was just gone. We went through like nine spare keys. Then I started cognitive behavioral therapy when I was 17 and found out that I should get a key bowl. I’m 32 now and I’ve never lost my keys since. It’s my biggest piece of ADHD advice that I swear by.
My doctor suggested a “launch pad”. Somewhere to always keep shoes, keys, a bag; the things you use daily. Usually by the door so it’s where you need them when you need them 👍
Never leave your keys near a front door that has a letter box. It's not unheard of for people to use a fishing rod or other long stick to reach in, get your keys, gain entry to your house or steal your car.

My favorite: I lost/can’t find something (usually a tool) that I JUST USED and I haven’t moved from the spot I where I just used it.
I lost my spare keys a month ago. I literally walked three steps and I know I had them in my hand. In those three steps I think I must've blacked out and hid those keys in the best hiding spot ever....
Literally it drives me insane 😭😂 it’s like an issue
Oh my God. My existence is now valid beyond what I have ever imagined
