Please note: in Step 1 of this video, I mention you can not get certified as a sole-proprietor, I should add clarification here because that is not 100% true. Certain types of industries like those in professional services can certainly get certified as a sole-proprietor. However, it is preferred for insurance\liability reasons that most applicants (ie trucking, construction, janitorial, healthcare, products, etc.) be structured a LLC/LLP/INC. This is especially true as a subcontractor when you are working directly with the prime contractor and not the government or corporate entity.

Registering a business is a state process. The steps provided in this video are a great guide. May I suggest checking the local SCORE organization in your community or neighboring community (retirees with business development experiences), they usually offer zoom trainings with good to know business development trainings. Or search for your local collegeâs small business incubator programs, or entrepreneurs/ mentor protĂ©gĂ© programs within your area to gather information on becoming a state recognized business.
GeHow to Get Certified as a Minority-Owned Business if the owner is a Online service? If a online service they may not have a physical office such as Online tutoring, online clothing line, or what if the person charges online for food recipes for examples?
@@Lwalker72 Great question, the application process will be the same but for the businessâ physical location you would put your home address/virtual office address and you would either need to produce your tax bill to show that you are the homeowner or produce a lease agreement if you are renting the location.

I started the application process- went to the county seminar and ended up on the cityâs page somehow not realizing it until 30 pages later đ€ŠđŸââïž And just abandoned ship in 2019. We all know what happened in 2020. Now Iâm reconsidering starting over
For some states, the city/county have the same MBE/WBE certification. Meaning there is one application for both.

Serious question: What/who/how do you determine if you are a minority? Father from Mexico and White Mother from USA, = 50% Hispanic/Latino. Or, in a case where on Father's side, Grandmother is black, Grandfather is 1/4 Native American. How is this decided? What about a case where a person is 25% black and 75% white - Non-Hispanic? It can get confusing real fast! Thanks!

If you're registered in the SAM system, you're self certified, can you use that to get federal contracts?
This is a great question, yes you can still bid on contracts but the self-service registration on SAM is not the same as being certified as a MBE.
The MBE certification allows you specific opportunities, for instance a contract may have a 5% spending goal specifically for a minority business, in order to qualify getting that opportunity you have to be certified as a minority business.
I noticed you said you have to have an LLC or INC. So if your business is an S Corp am I saying correct that the business cant qualify?
Sorry for the confusion here! You can certainly have an S Corp and qualify.
This may be a silly question, but why is it important to register as an MBE instead of the standard way of certifying/filing your business?... Primarily, aid and exposure? I just saw that question when organizing my business in Texas, but there's limited information on the SOS website.
Hi Lovell, thatâs a great question. One of the main benefits of becoming certified as a MBE is the opportunity to participate in government contracting. Becoming certified is not an alternative to getting your business filed as an entity through your state. Actually, you will want to get a standard business entity set up like an LLC or incorporation before you get certified as a MBE.
Question. According to the application for National Certification as a Minority owned and controlled business / Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), under Ownership and Control it states: Presumed Minority owns 100% of the assets of a sole proprietorship and 100% of the control of a sole proprietorship. So, that in itself qualifies Sole Proprietors (minority owned) as a Minority Owned Business and can get certified. Am I correct?

Hi David, you actually can get certified as a sole proprietor, dependent on the type of professional service that you offer.
If you are offering a true service (ie construction) or product it will require you to be structured as a business entity.
To bid on contracts and even sometimes as a subcontractor to the prime contractors require you have to hold special insurance and bonding to qualify for these projects.

Hi Ashley, generally speaking there are a few different meeting minutes that they require however, in most instances you can create one document that meets the requirement for all meeting minutes they request.

How's does MBE certification differ from the SDVOSB certification? Would you know what the advantages and disadvantages are?
Hi Brandun thank you for the question, the difference is the designation, but as a minority service disable veteran you are able to get both.
What I can say, is the SDVOSB has lower utilization than the MBE certification; so as it relates to the diverse spend requirements in contracts there is typically spending goals for both minority owned businesses and veteran owned businesses. Because the are less certified SDVOSB than MBEs the competition among SDVOSBs is less (meaning greater chance of wynning the contract)

Can I be Federally certified in NC and do business in other states for federal contracts?
Generally speaking the federal certifications are for federal contracts only and the state/city/county certifications are for state/city/county contracts.
States do not put out federal contracts they put out state contracts.
So if your 50 50 percent owned but your both African American we still wonât qualify until we adjust the ownership percentage??

Hi Fatou thatâs a great question, black, Hispanic, Asian, and Indian, are all used anonymously here.
As long as the owner is in one or more than one of those groups they are considered a minority woman.

Hello, is there a program for black men to get certified? What If you haven't file personal taxes in 3yrs or if my business is just starting out? I have pay stubs and W2's
Great question, yes the MBE certification is for black men. The application will require that you be compliant in filing taxes so I would encourage you to get those done before submitting an application for certification. If your business is just starting out then yes your w2's will be sufficient.

Yes yes, those documents are very important. But as long as you can collect and submit what they are asking you for you should not have a problem getting certified.

I have a question just a curiosity. Or is a person considered a minority person if they have significant disabilities, if senior citizens, or if they are a woman, I am not a person of color, but Iâm wondering about my status as an entrepreneur as far as being eligible for grants and loans considering the fact that I am physically disabled, deal with several other disability the same thing issues or situation, and like I said I am quotation I am Caucasian, not a big Dr skin, but I have all these other issues that I have to deal with including communication, as a podcast or being blind
This is a great question, there is actually a certification specifically for business owners who have disabilities.
So you wouldnât qualify as a minority business, you can get certified as a disabled owned business and still get contract opportunities with that specific designation.
SBE is a possibility, local and city government and your local utilities certify small businesses to participate in the vendor bid / award process.

This would be for state, city, or county certifications! Also, certifications through the National Minority Supplier Development Council and WBENC.
If someone owes taxes and is making payments, does this have a negative impact on the certification or can they still get approved?
Hi Al, great question. As long as you can submit your federal tax returns for your business and your personal taxes you're good to go. There is not a negative impact if you're making payments!

Hi there, great question. In order to be certified you do need to be a citizen of the United States. So unfortunately you will not be able to get certified with a social card and a work permit.

Not that I know of, a lot of the information is pretty personal specifically the financial statement information, lease agreements, business filing paperwork, etc.
But there are some documents that can be produced for you like your résumé, operating agreement, and meeting minutes.

Technically there is not additional benefit as it relates to getting business opportunities if you don't wan to work with public entities.
If you are invested in working with private corporations
there is actually a better suited certification for you through the National Minority Supplier Development Council (nmsdc.org).
If you're more interested in a b2c market, then there is no need for you to get certified, there won't be any direct benefit to you.
