    In the book it is beautifully explained that Scarlett was scared at first and she struggled but he kissed her with such passion that the world around her disappered and she wanted him as badly as he wanted her. And since it is quite difficult to show her emotions and thoughts in the movie, they showed it with her happiness the morning after. Anyone who says it is abuse or rape clearly wasn't paying much attention to the storyline of the movie and sure as hell never read the book. It was actually an incredibly passionate scene in both the book and the movie- this was the moment Scarlett stopped daydreaming about Ashley.

      I think that the point of the book was that although she may have changed towards Rhett, it was as usual, mainly for "Scarlett reasons': being taken care of, manipulation of others, self-aggrandizement....I think the point of the book is that she never does change her personality. She's a narcissist.

    Regardless of what happened in the book, the movie only shows her resisting. It's possible it wasn't rape, but the movie gives no proof of that. We see absolutely no consent. And no, Scarlett waking up happy does not count as consent. Whether a victim acknowledges she has been raped has nothing to do with the rape itself. Sex without consent is ALWAYS rape. This scene only perpetuates the myth that women enjoy being raped and that a husband has the right to force sex from his wife.

    I myself didn't get the impression that he raped her. As embosier says, this shows that men had the delusion that women wanted to be overpowered--but in the movies, the women always cease resisting after a moment and show enthusiasm, so it can be considered consensual. When he apologized in the morning, I didn't think he was apologizing for rape, but apologizing for being drunk and loutish.

      @ebmosier1 Před 10 lety +5

      Deborah Macaoidh-Selim It's heavily implied that he forced her to have sex with him. The movie and book are from a very different time, and this is seen as a woman's fantasy - despite Scarlett's protest, she eventually gave in to Rhett's rugged manliness, and the next morning, she's overflowing with sexual pleasure, which suggests the night before wasn't entirely non-consensual on her part. Of course, it was off-screen, so I suppose one could imagine whatever they wanted to happened. Maybe they sat up all night playing Yahtzee.

      Not considered rape by WHO and WHAT? The law? Society? People in general? So you're saying there is a huge level of inconsistency then in terms of how rape is to be defined and that it was changing all the time, but at heart and at its most basic level, was it not it and was it not ALWAYS hurtful and deeply humiliating at least on a pure and basic and PERSONAL level? And if the law and society simply did NOT recognize it as such, does that mean that they were evil and selfish or just did not know better? And what if a victim ends up killing themself as a result or their perpetrator...

    Okay. There is no logic as to how this is sex or even rape. In a sense, it is like bridal carrying. Rhett is trying to coax Scarlett, in the least. Yes, she wakes up day-dreaming, but wouldn't you be if you were her? I, for one, find this the most romantic thing to exist. I'm not joking. The fact people find this as sexual abuse is disturbing. If he DID rape her, she wouldn't be day-dreaming and dazed the next morning, she'd be laboriously traumatized. From personal experience, I can reassure you, yes, the person thinking this, that NO! Rape does not make have a fit and then wake up sastifed. They were prehaps drunk, and, guess what- just because you have sex while drunk does not mean someone touches you inappropriately. In the 1930s, flims were naturally at risk. Again, rape has nothing to with this, or sex. If so, you are sick. Rape is not something to make you smile and talk about in your sleep.

    • @teresad8239
      @teresad8239 Před 9 lety +18

      RansomRose77 You misunderstand the problem with this. It is the film itself, the idea it promotes: it says that women like to be 'taken', that women may shake their heads and pull back and say 'no', but really no means yes and this is 'proven' by her happy smile in the morning: men know best what women want and women don't even know themselves what they want. Those are the ideas conveyed in this scene. The fact she doesn't wake up 'traumatised' is the film condoning the notion that men know women better than they know themselves and that rape is somehow a misnomer. I don't know why you doubt that even sex takes place?? This is a 1930s film, they couldn't be pornographic/explicit (!), but it is overwhelmingly obvious that the pair have had sex...how much more of a hint do you need?

      The thing is, following information on how it is incredibly difficult to prosecute sexual offenders and how they often leave their victims traumatized for life and given how I have heard many times civilized people react with great anger at offenders, even if reality, what with all the victim blaming and whatnot, show how incredibly tragic the matter is for the victims, and the ever growing popularity of rape and revenge films like I Spit on Your Grave and whatnot, as well as the fact that, even more so than murder (believe it or not) it is seen as a highly taboo subject, its often difficult to simply become objective on the matter and not feel a personal great outrage at the perpetrators.

    That's the way I'll try to look at it, but I still think it's slightly iffy territory to illustrate that just carrying a woman off to have your way with her despite her protesting is okay because she'll be receptive to it in the end.
    In this case, that might have been true, but it's still a dangerous portrayal of a situation that could have easily become marital rape had she continued to protest as it looks as if he would have carried on regardless.

    See I'd say in reality, having any woman 'enjoy' marital rape is just a misrepresentation and in bad taste on the part of the filmmakers and not an actual reflection of reality.
    But that's obviously just because we view the scene differently. I saw it as rape, you obviously saw it as consensual which is fair enough. Obviously we'll never know because we don't actually see what happens once they reach the bedroom and whether she continued to put up a fight or was in fact a willing participant.

    • @joanavitorino1436
      @joanavitorino1436 Před 5 lety +4

      There are many examples in filmography of marital rape as something normal. However, this is NOT one of them. Scarlett was being feisty and struggling as he took her, but it is obvious that she was willing in the bedroom by her happy humour and gleamy glow the morning after. No raped woman would wake up happy about it! Why do people even discuss this?

  • @ElisaK121
    @ElisaK121 Před 5 lety +11

    The fact that Scarlet woke up with a smile on her face and rekindled love for Rhett, does not stand in contrast with or even refute the observation that Rhett did use strength to initiate sexual contact with Scarlet, while she tried to fend him off. Since this is a movie, it cannot be expected to be 100% consistent. This movie reflects society's view on men and women at the time when it was made. From the movie scene, gender roles are as follows: "The reluctant woman just needs to be persuaded by a strong man, because when she says no, she actually doesn't mean it". There is no need to explain how seriously problematic that is.
    Now, can we infer that Scarlet was raped? Yes and no. The actual sex/ rape(?) scene is not shown, we just see what happens before and after. Moving on from the before scene, a realistic inference would be that she was raped, because she did not give consensus and why would she be expected to suddenly change her mind? After all, no means no. However, I don't think that the movie is realistic or was intended to infer that Scarlet was raped and then inexplicably liked it, which would be a glorification of rape. And I also don't think that this is how the audience perceived it back in the days and, judging from the comments, still mostly does not perceive it. When you keep in mind how Rhett (the man) and Scarlet (the woman) are depicted in this scene and take the after sex scene into account, it is even logical to infer that Scarlet gave up resisting and did give her consensus after all. It all depends on the basic assumptions about how men and women (and their sexuality) work. This depiction is what actually needs to be criticized. Seeing how these gender roles are glorified in the comments is quite sad. This movie came out in 1939, and to some extent, Scarlet was depicted as a strong and relatively independent woman, which was quite progressive back then. But the scene shown in this video also shows that the gender roles depicted in this movie are still problematic from today's perspective. However judging from the comments, there are people who still seem to share these outdated gender roles. I don't care about an old movie scene. What's frustrating to me is seeing these reactions.

    If this was shown in the film, that would make a difference. But it wasn't, and we're talking about this scene from the movie, or we wouldn't be posting here. What happened in the book is irrelevant. The movie shows an angry drunk man forcibly carrying an unwilling woman, thrashing and protesting, to have sex with her whether she wanted to or not, hence the concern.
    Think to yourself: even in the book, would Rhett have stopped if Scarlett continued to protest?
