Yea. There needs to be training program for war crime prevention cause All military’s train there soldiers to do is kill the enemy and dehumanize them but don’t train soldiers on how to behave in foreign towns and villages with people there supposed to be fighting for
Dale Dye is awesome on both sides of the camera. This scene in particular, he just imbues it (as he tends to do when playing military roles) with the kind of authenticity that can't be learned, taught, or faked. I'll wager just about every vet-- certainly those who were in "combat arms" MOSs-- worked for at least one guy like the Captain he plays in this scene. The only possible nit-pick I can think of is that Dye plays a commissioned officer in the Army, but he yells like a Marine Corps NCO; that slight back-of-the-throat barking thing on the first syllable or first word of a sentence. R Lee Ermey does the same thing when he plays GySgt Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket." It's how Marine Corps Drill Instructors yell (at least that's how mine certainly did).
@@Rogue_Nine416 Well, Dale Dye **was** indeed a "mustang officer" in his real-life Marine Corps career. He enlisted, rose to the rank of Sergeant, and at some point scored an officer commission; I believe that he had a couple years of college under his belt prior to enlisting. Hell, my own father was a "mustang officer" in the Army...though I dunno if that term is part of the Army vernacular. He enlisted in '61, also rose the rank of Sergeant, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant prior to deploying to Vietnam in '67 (just in time for the Tet Offensive...lucky him) and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in '92. And the man could certainly teach a masterclass on ass-chewing. Bearing that in mind, I'd say you make an undeniably fair point.
My brother-in-law is a retired Air Force MSgt and viewed this movie with me. He loved this scene because the Capt. dug into his enlisted subordinate the way he wanted. "We can't yell at these kids anymore. We just aren't allowed to." While I agree with Erickson and disagree with the Capt., this scene demonstrates the complexity of the world we live in, as well as the complexity of the emotions Erickson struggled with. What his squad did WAS wrong, but what are the consequences of him coming forward? Is he making himself a target by doing so? Is turning in Sgt. Messerve betraying the man that saved his life? If this results in major international backlash, is that helping the war effort? What if he doesn't say anything? Could he live with himself if these men do something like this again? Ultimately he does the right thing, but being in this position is not easy.
It’s not really that complicated. It’s called right and wrong. Rape is wrong. Honesty is right. Murder is wrong. Honor is right. If you get your country involved with an illegal war (war started with a lie by LBJ and McNamara) that doesn’t even have a formal declaration of war from congress then you can expect it won’t be a very just cause to begin with. If the war itself is based on a lie then you shouldn’t expect it to be an honorable event.
Get Ready to be mind blown: Dale Dye was friends and served with Gustav Hastford in Vietnam who wrote the novel short timers which the movie full metal jacket was based on that starred R Lee Ermy
What’s so powerful about this scene to me is the captain seems fully aware of how bad and evil this situation is, but you get that sense he’s been there long enough to have probably seen worse. He points out what Erickson doesn’t even consider like a conviction, weither they’ll serve time, putting a target on his back etc. The way he tells him “no one’s trying to stop you from reporting anything” really hammers home the idea he’s not saying this because what the others did was right, he’s chewing out Erickson for his own safety if he reports it
@@SiriusMined ohh I’m not saying he’s not but then again the whole concept of what they’re doing in the first place is a disgrace, He knows this whole war is a crapshoot he knows there’s so much going on the army would turn a blind eye if it could, if anything it sells home a very real truth about war and even ugly parts of institutions like this.
As a coincidence, i watched it yesterday- when i watched i was crying , then thought much about that girl and American soldiers!!!!! This is the most wonderful Vietnamese war film i have ever watched! Because it was a different aspect RAPE- it made me think about My Lai Massacre! Talked about this concept with a Muslim imam just yesterday. The Koran has a verse that reads "If you take one life it's as if you have murdered the entire world. If you save one life it's as if you have saved the whole world." Sounds nice and poetic but ultimately it's false. No good deed goes "above and beyond the call of duty" because God expects us to do deeds, and nothing but good deeds, every moment of our lives (Luke 17:10). Your good deeds cannot cancel out your bad deeds. Saving Erickson's life didn't earn Masserve the right to rape and kill a woman. He must pay for his sins. God's forgiveness through the mediation of Jesus can clear us of the guilt we incur. Our deeds are only our duty.
Hey I'm late to watching this AMAZING movie. Who was dead at the bottom of the cliff!? I thought it was Meserve but he went to trial along with the others

I like that the US Army tries to conduct a nice sanitary war. Our enemies don’t. You can say you like it or you don’t but that fact should temper how you think of America. We have attempted to elevate human condition more aggressively than any one, ever.
No country is perfect I agree. But I don't see how the Vietmin and the talibans are the aggressors when they are on their homeland. One can't pretend to fight for others freedom abroad and not see the disparities at home. They had to conduct war crime investigations and trials. It's mostly because of the fact that they let the free press cover this war. The "sanitary war " was when Hollywood took part in the war efforts of WW2..... No such thing as sanitary war.
You are correct in your thoughts. Also consider that it's a known fact that, given the chance, our enemies would rather surrender to a US outfit than be taken prisoners by other factions or even return defeated to their own! It happened from ww2 Germans to Sadam's Iraq. That fact speaks volumes about the perception our enemies have about the US.
@@gussalazar449 Surrendering to US is not always a garantee of being treated with dignity.... What about Guantanamo prison ?? For many it's all about free speech until someone disrespects the flag. Sextus Empiricus How was Erickson wrong when all he did was tried to avenge the woman your little pal dale dye was wrong for upholding them in what they did
I am glad the movie played it out this way at least it is debated rather than simply having a issue or what is right or wrong. If the rape and murder of the women became public it would have made a excellent recruitment tool for the VC and NVA it would also affect public opinion on the war affecting the level of support it would have got. It is pretty inescapable that the combination of factors would have led to more american casualties along with more scrutiny of the units on the ground. If you simply had the captain wholeheartedly backing erikson than it would have been too simplistic these actors have a wealth of motives and considerations behind their actions. I do wonder what compassion the captain had for the murdered raped women in spite his loyalties and duties to the army.
Fantastic analysis I read it about 4 times!! I think it is very obvious that he had no compassion for that girl. She was just another vietnemese girl. (I cant spell) Again, great analysis
If american soldiers can do this to innocent vietnamese women whose to say they cant do this to innocent american women when they get back to the USA??
....maybe if you have been there sir, maybe if you'd heard her screaming...........i've heard alot of fucking screaming in this country, most of it come from wounded American boys....
He had a point about Tony saving his life but at the same time that doesn't justify a raping and murdering a innocent civilian I would of rated all of them rapos out too who's to say they wouldn't try that shit again once they got back home to young American girls
The Captain (and a guy that grey should probably have been cast as a Lt. Colonel at least) was probably right. They got the right sentences at the court martial, but the amount of time they served was most likely severely reduced.
yes and no. They were all dishonorably discharged in real life but didn't do much time in prison. The person Don Harvey's character was based on served the most time (like in the movie) and in real life got involved in another murder later in his life but got off on one years' probation because he ratted out his accomplices.
I watched this movie about 20 years ago before I learned how much of a subversive sean penn was and vowed never to watch any more of his movies, and I recall they were in the americal division.it is my understanding through my studies that in ww2 the americal division was a great unit, but during Vietnam the division had a less than steller performance record and wasn't always the most law abiding.
The movie is based on actual event that happened in 1966. The names were changed (liability and legal issues) as well as the division Americal to 1st cav. Also Americal division had a unit in 1968 participate d in the mi Lai massacre where an American company massacred 400+ civilians. I have a link from Wikipedia about the 192 incident en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incident_on_Hill_192
They probably are old by now if all 4 are alive, they more than likely raped other women and got away with it, once a rapist, always a rapist, they were sick in the head.
Dale Dye was only 44 years old when he made this movie. How many 44 year olds look and act like this today with a full head of grey hair, even if they’re not combat or military veterans? Not many. Either GMO foods have been good at slowing the aging process or the average American man that age today is soft, or both. Can you imagine a Captain in the Air Force or even Army today talking to an E2 or E3 like that? They’d be discharged for mental instability or have to go to mandatory sensitivity training! Green Dot training is supposed to help prevent such a thing. Anyway without being too long-winded, that Captain is probably at least a 20 year veteran having been in WW2 and Korea. He’s prior enlisted and not like those clean-cut and educated 25-30 year old Captains that have always been officers. In his defense, he’s not being a deliberately horrible person, he just wants to protect himself and knows the private will stir the waters of he moves on and make him look bad.
mcsquare77 During Vietnam NCOs were getting killed faster than they could be promoted normally so they established an NCO school to create “buck sergeants” and send them out sooner. It was a flawed system and was ended after the US pulled out. Oh, and all the soldiers were immature because they WERE kids.

R Lee Ermey does the same thing when he plays GySgt Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket." It's how Marine Corps Drill Instructors yell (at least that's how mine certainly did).
he could have very well been a mustang officer in the movie for all we know
@@Rogue_Nine416 Well, Dale Dye **was** indeed a "mustang officer" in his real-life Marine Corps career.
"hes 21 years old"
He should've replied "u want to know how old she WAS sir?!"
My brother-in-law is a retired Air Force MSgt and viewed this movie with me. He loved this scene because the Capt. dug into his enlisted subordinate the way he wanted. "We can't yell at these kids anymore. We just aren't allowed to."
While I agree with Erickson and disagree with the Capt., this scene demonstrates the complexity of the world we live in, as well as the complexity of the emotions Erickson struggled with.
All worth it.... to put away a bunch of rapist murderers. I understand what he is saying but that is no excuse or reason to keep it hush.
Based on a true story and they were convicted.

If helping the war effort means covering up war crimes then we deserve to lose.
Great soundtrack by Ennio Morricone as well.

Not bad. I love Dale Dye! I wonder if he met R. Lee Ermy. He's like him, except as a drill sergeant who was in "Full Metal Jacket".
dale dye and rlee ermey starred together in the rough riders!

This was a great scene
What’s so powerful about this scene to me is the captain seems fully aware of how bad and evil this situation is, but you get that sense he’s been there long enough to have probably seen worse. He points out what Erickson doesn’t even consider like a conviction, weither they’ll serve time, putting a target on his back etc. The way he tells him “no one’s trying to stop you from reporting anything” really hammers home the idea he’s not saying this because what the others did was right, he’s chewing out Erickson for his own safety if he reports it
But he IS trying to intimdate Erickson into inaction. He's a disgrace.
@@SiriusMined ohh I’m not saying he’s not but then again the whole concept of what they’re doing in the first place is a disgrace,
He knows this whole war is a crapshoot he knows there’s so much going on the army would turn a blind eye if it could, if anything it sells home a very real truth about war and even ugly parts of institutions like this.
Dale Dye should have been nominated for supporting actor for his role.

SORRY I FORGOT TO SAY . SEAN BEAN SAVED HIS LIFE . HE SHOULD A LET IT GO MAN .

If a country have war i run away from that country so that i avoid militaire

Sextus Empiricus How was Erickson wrong when all he did was tried to avenge the woman your little pal dale dye was wrong for upholding them in what they did
You can't do that in the military anymore they get too emotional the soldiers will start crying

Did those 4 rapists serve their time in prison?
The Captain (and a guy that grey should probably have been cast as a Lt. Colonel at least) was probably right. They got the right sentences at the court martial, but the amount of time they served was most likely severely reduced.
yes and no. They were all dishonorably discharged in real life but didn't do much time in prison. The person Don Harvey's character was based on served the most time (like in the movie) and in real life got involved in another murder later in his life but got off on one years' probation because he ratted out his accomplices.
Yes all four men were found guilty and were dishonorably discharge from the U.S. Army.
"Flick Flies off of shit"?
Dose anybody know if these men are still alive that done this crime
They probably are old by now if all 4 are alive, they more than likely raped other women and got away with it, once a rapist, always a rapist, they were sick in the head.
John Mardo you are right in what you say it was a disgusting horrible thing they did to that poor young girl
Isnt this scene to show what DYE thinks? If not why film the scene? Its meant to be provocative.
If Sean Penns character is 20 years old. He shouldn't be a Sergeant. He is way to immature to be a Sargeant!
mcsquare77 right.
mcsquare77 being 20 years old back then wasn't the same as now
in a war zone, promotion is based on performance.
There were 19 year old Lieutenants in Vietnam. Manpower was stretched.
mcsquare77 During Vietnam NCOs were getting killed faster than they could be promoted normally so they established an NCO school to create “buck sergeants” and send them out sooner. It was a flawed system and was ended after the US pulled out. Oh, and all the soldiers were immature because they WERE kids.
Meserve was actually on presidential parade detail, really decorated Sargent, they should've kidnapped that girl but they really wanted to get laid, tough, I wonder what became of his life after this
