- I'm a huge fan of this film and noticed this short conversation with M J Fox about the film and his role in it is not available on this platform so thought I'd upload it for other fans of Michael J Fox and the film Casualties Of War itself. Please remember to like and Please also check out the other similar video I have uploaded which is a general 'Making of Documentary' about Casualties Of War with Brain De Palma.
I do not own any of this footage and no copyright infringement is intended, all rights belong to the original producers.
Anyone think Michael deserves an Oscar nomination for this?
Marty Keaton yes.
Yyyyeeeeeesssssss
Ofcourse!!!
2:03 very powerful words
nope, not a nomination, he deserves the oscar
Thuy Le really breaks my heart in this film. What is so amazing is that she was not an actress, and this was the only film she ever did. Award or no award, she deserves so much honor for the courageous and very believable role she portrayed. I just wish there was at least one interview of her talking about this film.
Same here she carries the soul of the film, always wondered what became of her after, I know she got married had kids etc but nothing concrete....would love more info on her in general.
I know she's a school teacher in San Francisco, but I don't know what school.
I'm pretty sure that information (that's on her IMDB Page) is wrong, ie her current status also her Date Of Birth is also listed as 1971 when she was born in 1966
I got her info from Wikipedia.
Yep I read a few of her promo interviews she did for the film, De Palma told her he would help her get future work if she wanted to continue with acting but she declined (as you mentioned she was focusing on her family life) I read she also got offered a part in the 1992 film Indochine which she turned down as I think she had just had her first child at that time.
Also someone told me that Oliver Stone wanted to cast her in his 1993 film Heaven And Earth but by that time the casting people couldn't even get a hold of her. Just a real shame we didn't see more of her, would loved to have seen her give a recent retrospective interview of her experience with the film.
This film contains what is perhaps THE most haunting and emotionally affecting music score in all of cinema imo.
David Topchiev youshould watch “The Mission”
You know you're right , the music and the scenes made me cry , watching this
The one and only Ennio Morricone!

You don't know how right you're.
@Umer Ahsan
Very sad , indeed.
What bothers me is the fact that something like this probably happened many many times. And those sick deprived men went home, married and had children. And they will never know that their beloved father is a sadistic rapist. To kill as a soldier is one thing, but raping and murdering innocent people is just beyond sick.
And we probably saw them walking the streets or doing everyday stuff without knowing what they did.
Exact same thing happened in Iraq and DePalma did a movie about it, Redacted. He got pulverized by the rightwing noise machine for it.
It happened in Iraq and Im 100% positive it happened in Afghanistan as well.
not to play devil's advocate but is anyone really surprised situations like this happened in real life? these men were sent overseas to serve as killers, many of them drafted, and time after time they were continuously spat on by their neighbors, maybe their family or their communities and were never given the proper support they needed even in country by their own government or by the army or marine corps...eventually you just break down and you give in to the animalistic killer you've been trained and lead to believe you are, compounded with the personal loss of a close friend like meserve and brown and it's no surprise that rape or murder happens
i absolutely agree with you but at the same time steps need to be taken so that situations like this don't happen again and simply throwing everyone away into a cell that partakes in such an awful act isn't the right path if you ask me
@@Rogue_Nine416 Then what is? What’s the best way to prevent a situation like this from happening if you can’t report to your superiors?
Sure, war can be prevented but as long as corrupt politicians exist… that’s not happening.
The US going to the ‘Nam didn’t need to happen but the president thought otherwise.
What would *you* have done if your teammates graped someone?
My God, the ending when he's talking to the woman from the train, hearing that music and knowing it was the same actress that experienced the rape and murder, it just gave me chills
I never knew it was the same actress. Wow.
Underrated film
I think this movie is not only underrated, I think it's one of the two best movies about Vietnam ever made, the other being "Apocalypse Now."
I was an 'extra' in this movie. Did a lot of the 'grunt shots'. I ended up in the courtroom scene as the 'stenographer'. Michael used to sit on the desk and keep his cigarettes in the drawer. Nice guy too! Sean Penn was also a pretty decent person, really good actor for sure ! Happy days Phuket in 1988.
Was it ever verified if there was actually beer around that area laced with formaldehyde? Fox makes a comment about this in his first book.
I felt all of them were " Casualties of War"! I still cry over this movie!
This movie is a loss gem , it deserved so much more attention than what it received
This movie should have won an Oscar and Michael and Penn also. Phenomal directing by Di Palma this movie is a gem.
He was the perfect person for Eriksson
Never lose your humanity no matter the price or situation.
I've just watched this film again, and it is still emotional after all of these years. What an amazing score!
Powerful performances by all especially Michael Fox. His character Errikson portrayed a lot of courage
For me this film was the most emotionally shattering film I have ever seen! The actress that played the victim was perfect. It was so real that I have literally struggled with the images that I saw way back when the movie was in the theaters. I have been unable to see any of it since till looking at some clips on CZcams today.
Agreed, you're lucky in some ways that you got to see it at the theater, I think sadly many people missed out on something really special and unique.
Dave Brittain I nearly went catatonic after seeing Thuy Le’s character getting raped and later killed.
@@devonmicheals3993 Yes I know what you mean.
I remember I watched this film when it was on television one night when I was about 13. I've always been pretty nonplussed about violence in films, but this haunted me for years, and it took a very long time to bring myself to watch it again.
This movie is the real deal thank you for allowing us to see such truth Michael J Fox is amazing
This is about my favorite Vietnam movie.I really like the character portrayals, and the action sequences. Its a sad story.
Michael j fox what a performance
The soundtrack is so powerful.....the ending scene is real emotional.
This movie will always haunt me. Incredibly powerful film.
It’s a terribly hard film to watch, but worth it. It has to be one of the must underrated war movies ever made. Its easily up there with De Palma’s best work, maybe his best film.
So far it’s my favorite.
I think Michael J. Fox was right when he said Eriksson was not a hero. He was supposed to save the girl from the rape but he could not, so he focused instead in trying to help her after, looking for a redemption that really never came. Thats why he persisted so much in going to trial and getting a bit of his humanity back but he was not heroic in the sense that he wanted to be. I always thought this when i watched the movie, always cursing him for not saving her or at least trying to.
Unless you are the one who must be brave in that moment it is just talk. He was a scared kid himself stuck in an impossible situation. Alone by himself. Sure he didn't do anything at that moment but he did later and this is something. It is never too late to do the right thing.
They were his brothers; he was in the middle of a foreign land, surrounded by mortal enemies. He likely didn't see any way out.
La actuación de la chica fue magistral! Tocaba el alma con cada mirada, cada gesto. Morí con ella!
great movie good job Michael J fox
You know he'll always be Marty McFly to me, so this movie initially came to me as kinda shocking to see him in a serious role. Saw the movie for the, I dunno, 5th time a couple of days ago. Still blown away from Penn's performance. I now understand the negative reviews it received bc we were all expecting Platoon/Rambo/Hamburger Hill type good vs bad type stuff. This was a whole new approach. Took some getting used too.
The score to this movie is so classic, I believe it has never been used for another film, at least not one that is well known.
what a hell of a movie ..... it holds a special place in my heart since i can remember watching it for the first time as a child.
I saw it live, vet. 1968, nam...
Such a great role, and a great job by Fox. Its a shame that it never seemed to springboard him into similarly challenging roles.
His health problems played a role in that, I’m sure.
thank you Michael
I really didn't think MJF was believable. 5'4" trying to be a tough guy. But man, Sean Penn was the MAN. This was the first movie I saw him in and I had heard of him but when I saw this I thought, DAMN, he IS an actor. But Thuy Thu Le stole the movie. Her acting is so genuine that I just want to hug her and protect her every time I see this movie.
Patrick Tadina, Vietnam War's longest continuously serving Ranger was a tough guy. height was 5 feet 5
He wasn't trying to be a tough guy,he was trying to remain a Human Being
@@stevenwolf8434 He failed. Not believable.
In case you don't know Jack Kirby (co-creator of Captain America) is 5'2 and he is a scout during World War 1. It was considered to be the toughest and dangerous jobs during the war. Height doesn't really determined the toughness. It's the will and determination that counts. And also another actor James Cagney (5'5) is an accomplished boxer.
@@GnarlsGnarlingtonyour off your left nut if you don't find his acting believable
Such a contrasting role to Marty McFly. Michael does not get the recognition he deserves.
What about this documentary?
Film magistral,,, ou la cruauté de l'être humain côtoie la justice et le courage,,,et la musique si importante,,, nous sommes tous capables du pire ou du meilleur.,, Michael J Fox,, magistral,, ainsi que la jeune femme
This movie makes me weep like a baby. The only other Vietnam war movie that had this effect on me was Platoon.
But this movie. My god it just breaks my heart.
Que triste hasta donde llega la maldad de las personas pobre niña como habra sufrido😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Like Michael said, it is really an important film. Cheers...
What an incredible movie, at the end, the scene when Erickson calls out the Vietnamese girl name out... it always makes me feel sad but find redemption in her response, his reaction and the score!! Amazing!!
Draziw
FYI
He actually said hello in Vietnamese at the end of the film. I might spell it wrong: Chow Cho
@@houseoftoussaint9609 he said: Chào Cô❤😊🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
Some credit to Sean Penn as well, he acted the part very well.
i'm sorry michael j fox..........(Crying)
On set I ate pineapple with Thuy (She played the Vietnamese victim'!) I have the photo's at home, my kids just laughed at the 'young guy' I once was in 1988.
Wow that's cool, you should share those snaps.
It truly is an important film, thank you so much for uploading this fascinating conversation. It seems to me that only a guy could imagine interpreting his refusal to "take a turn" as him "taking a stand" or that "that's heroic, that's pretty impressive that he did that."
Incredibly moving film with an exceptional score
13:48 - Wow! After all these years still makes me very emotional.
I'm thinking. Could there be a chance that Eriksson and that Vietnamese girl would have love between them in the movie? To be honest, I liked the scenes where Eriksson and the Vietnamese girl were alone, especially even when the soldier was comforting the girl.
I thinking like you too❤❤❤
Thank you for posting this documentary Casualties of War l just watch the film again and Michael J Fox and the film very gripping and sad on the casualty of morality🤔
What a great interview. I heard he and SP didn't get a long, so it's cool to know that they were just putting their work first.
phenomenal movie! amazing acting from all the cast, amazing score!
He visto la escena después de la violación; empecé a llorar ríos de lágrimas.Pocas películas causaron tales efectos en mí.
Thanks for uploading. CASUALTIES OF WAR is a great unsung movie and a somewhat erratic directors best work.
Good .movie, Michael....as an ex-u.s. army vet nam, 1968.....it happened a lot.....
I still remember watching this movie in the 90s on channel 13 on the weekends a couple of times when it come out, great work Brian, Michael, Sean and all those great actors
The ending of that superb film remains one of the most haunting I've ever watched.
This was a great film and the the girl did such a great job for a non actress. Fox was just great and even though I didnt like the charactor thatb Shawn Penn played, Shawn penn was great in it. What a great cast.
I hated Sean Penn Character in this movie too, the way he speaks having tabaco in his mouth gave me anxiety watching it.
@@yajizlopez3032 that only means he did a good job. An actor playing a bad character needs to make you hate him
I like michael fox he has good heart
From the research
I've done about the real story,
a lot of what was portrayed in the film is very true to fact there may have been some minor changes as well as there isn't any other biopic but it really got to the heart of what the story was about and how it affected the main character that
Michael J Fox's character is based on
It was very shameful and inhuman 😞 Although one of the soldiers turned out to be good, he tried to save the this girl.
@BigLBA1 I believe that there are good men in the army
@@acdragonrider good men and bad men. It's how it's been when it comes to being part of an armed force of your country in wars.
War brings out the worst and good strongest of humanity.
We are better than this. Wish the whole world would come to and rejoice rather than fight/bully each other
Hands down Michael j fox best performance along with BTTF and The Hard Way!
“He’s 20 years old and you’re gonna ruin his life! He saved yours”
My brother who fought in Vietnam, told me a story of another called him a racist slur he never heard before . When another soldier explained to him it was an insult. He got the guy alone and hit him with a shovel. The guy never saw it coming
This film make me think about how to be as a human being in extreme situations.
It's a question about how to maintain human dignity in my own way, transcending race, culture, and national borders.
This film also reminds me of Erik Erikson, developmental psychologist.
Erikson describes what "identity crisis" is.
Wikipedia says:
Identity crisis involves the integration of the physical self, personality, potential roles and occupations. It is influenced by culture and historical trends. This stage is necessary for the successful development of future stages.
This is Top 10 of my favorite movies all time.
I remember the premiere in -89, after the movie was over...shocked. Hated Meserve profoundly, wanted to kill him. Angry. Quiet. Trembling. Restless. Didn't have a girlfriend at the time, noone to hold, kinda made it tougher. Outstanding performance from all actors, and Thuy Tu Le...a big hug and a kiss. She brought so much to this film, and De Palma is a bit of a genious.
B Strom my friend that is the genius of the film, he was able to touch you with it as I was.
You poor fucking thing.
This was a film that needed to be made. It’s so relevant to what’s happening now
Always wondered what did Meserve say to Eriksson after the convictions.
he mouths the words "i'll see you".
Supposedly he said "tv actor"
Colonna sonora fantastica
This Movie is based on the experience of my Pastor's brother in law, played by Michael J. Fox
Really? have you ever met him/has your pastor ever mentioned the incident?
His wife did and she said she remembered him speaking of it.Her maiden name was Storeby,so I assume that is the real name of the central figure.I never met him.
Robert M. Storeby was the name of the guy, so it matches
She is still alive and living in PA.
Assuming he's passed on then?
I would have wasted Clarke,Meserv,Hatchet and Diaz, for that poor girl.
17:10 "Go to hell.... SIR!"
More than a oscar, he was the best actor
they should have done a movie about the may lai incident too..
They did in 2011 called My Lai 4 or Platoon of Death. Its an Italian movie and is a dud, dont bother looking for it you are better to read Wiki and watch the documenteries in CZcams.
@@26TptCoy Hopefully someone can make a film on that one of these days. We don’t get enough historical dramas and war epics these days.
I can say many good things about the Brian De Palma-directed drama thriller war flick that is Casualties of War - only thing I can say is Michael J Fox completely broke typecast by playing a Vietnam war veteran who’s life changed for the worse the moment his unit engaged in sexual assault and murder of an innocent girl whilst on Hill 192 during the Vietnam war.
He broke my heart with his astonishing performance showcasing heroism and masculine vulnerabilities as the guy who said no to be part of a grizzly crime like this.
The fact that De Palma casted him really shows that he looks at things in off-centre in a good way when it comes to actors in his works.
Even though I’m happy that he’s waging war against Parkinson’s disease with his Michael J Fox Foundation due to fact his career has been permanently cut short thanks to the Parkinson’s disease he has to deal with, I give anything to live in a world where Michael J Fox carried on acting had he not had Parkinson’s (he still gets to have his Foundation regardless).
In this world if he did Casualties of War, he would’ve starred in the Antoine Fuqoa-directed Tears of The Sun as US Navy Lieutenant AK Waters (instead of Bruce Willis), heck even appearing in the Ridley Scott-directed Black Hawk Dawn as a Canadian marine - poor guy will go from being the Teen Wolf/Family Ties guy to being Marty McFly to being a bonafide war film star - being in same category as the likes of anyone whose names are popular that’s been in war film or multiple like Josh Hartnett, Ewen Bremner, Tom Sizemore, Jason Isaacs, Tom Hardy, Sam Worthington, Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hanks etc
Band of Brothers would be more awesomer if Michael J Fox was in it as a general or a colonel.
This movie is in the same class with Platoon and Hamburger Hill.
Penn was superb in this movie . And the haunting music....
Music by Ennio Morricone...
Although Jimi Hendrix was known to have substance abuse issues, I don't think he was ever a heroin addict.
It haunted me for weeks.
I strongly recommend this film, for anyone who hasn't seen it, which viscerally portrays the horrors which result from our many American wars overseas ... it should convince that ANY efforts to reduce American troop numbers abroad, no matter how egocentric the character who attempts it nor how tawdry their motives, should be welcomed with open arms. I don't care who does it, Trump or Biden, nor do I care what their motives are ... put a muzzle now on the USA war machine!
This happens in all war, long before The United States was established.
John Leguizamo gave a hell of a performance as Diaz, John C Reilly ,I’ve never seen him not nail it! actor who played Clark , Doakes from Dexter, no one disappointed! But the tension between Erickson (Fox) and Sarge! (Penn) anyone who hasn’t seen it “”( if your watching this u seen it probly) but put someone on to it it’s a good movie and from the looks of it they went thru it to get it done!!
How horrible and sad for that poor girl.

When this interview was done, we can already see the effects of Parkinson's :(
I noticed that, too.
I knew some asshole would say this.
@raquel tuco I saw it too, The dude just stated the truth, why ya got to come after him? It's a shame to see a great actor get bit by a shit disease but he did.

Please do with Casualties of war!!!!!
I was on this set in Phuket 1988. I ate Pineapple with Thuy! Sean Penn wasn't the 'bad ass' he was portrayed to be !
Was it ever verified if there was actually beer around that area laced with formaldehyde? Fox makes a comment about this in his first book.
@@the90schild1 Thai Beer 'Singha' reputedly contained high amounts of Formaldehyde as it was transported and stored in many different parts of Thailand. Due to the possibility of the beer being stored in ambient or hot areas (Non cooled or chilled). The bottles were made of brown glass to offset UV . Remember some of these beers could sit for months in storage in those pre 'bar coded' or QA/QC days!
You can see his Parkinson's starting to show in this interview.
Does anyone know how long this interview took place after the movie finished filming?
