- Fanny's electrifying cover of Cream's 'Badge' is the definitive version of this classic, and in this fan's opinion, far outdoes the original. A beautiful song by an amazing band. Check out Fanny's official website at www.fannyrocks.com and the wonderful Fanny forum at fanny7roads.forumakers.com now!
Fanny were:
Nickey Barclay: Keyboards, organ, piano, vocals
June Millington: Guitars, vocals
Jean Millington: Bass guitar, vocals
Alice de Buhr: Drums, vocals
Thanks to Mathmatika, Fanny themselves and other Fanny fans from the Seven Roads forum for the pics that I used in this vid! - Hudba
I Just found them on CZcams a few days ago. I'm 62 years old now it's sad i didn't hear them before. I Love them ❤
Congrats.
64 here & I cant believe I never heard these gals before today. I was being nostalgic searching gogo girls & this , man I miss the 60s/70s.
Hi all! I wanted to make sure you knew that Jean (my sister, bassist) had a stroke and need our help. Here is her recovery page:@t As you know, she's one of the best bass players ever (watch this tape again, and all the rest!); not only do we want her to recover, we want her to get back on that bass! It's hard work, but she is applying herself with the same intensity she used to learn how to play in the first place: that is, 1,000%. Thanks, and if you do donate, please include a note! That helps, too:)) And Merry Christmas ... xx June
Hi June, I hope your sister is well on the road to recovery and back playing the bass. I've just discovered your band and am blown away by how good you guys are. All the best, Mark.
I hope Jean is doing well, I love seeing her play that bass!! She looks like she is having so much fun.
How is Jean I only just read this 😊✋
I have a crush on her... Is she single... I also am a base player..!!!!
I'm just finding this group doing one of my favorite songs and doing a great job 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 i don't know how your sister's doing. But I'm sending prayers to what ever is needed. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 its now 10:01pm 3-15-23 in Hagerstown Md! I TRULY LOVE THIS VERSION OF A CLASSIC ! I have it looping !
IM 67YO BROTHER WHO LOVES ALL TYPES OF MUSIC. BUT IM AN OLD HIPPIE HOW LOVES HIS ROLL N ROLL. THIS IS ONE OF MY TOP 10 SONGS. BUT I NEVER HERAD OF THIS GROUP ! WOW ! I GOT THEM ON THE LOOP ! CHILLIN WITH THEM AND SOME OF GOD BEST GREENERY ! 💨💨💨
I knew of and loved Fanny back in the day. I grew up in L.A. My friends and I loved them. Love them still. ...I thank them for being their authentic selves. The women of Fanny shine a light and have fun doing it (then and now). Many blessings to them!
Goddam it! Can´t get enough of this version of Badge from the last Cream album from 1969.
Fanny deliver their version of the song as a musical hit❤. Every musician in Fanny makes this version
a highlight. The arrangement is even better than Cream . The copy of George Harrison´s guitar part is even better, and played several times. That gives the song an amazing drive. Uplifting. A great surprise, when you never heard this group before. Thank you so much to Nickey, June, Jean and Alice. Hope you are alive and well. Does anyone agree?
This is better than the original Cream version. I can't fuckin' believe it. It's amazing. I've listened to it three fuckin' times in a row. The drummer swings so hard, and the pianist is so syncopated and funky. The vocal harmonies are powerful and beautiful. The guitar solos were so clean. Everything bout it: 10/10.
You're surely kidding. Baker kicks her arse (or fanny if you're from USA)
Language Timothy 🤣🤣
Bad taste effort. Cheap knockoff
This IS better than the original. I have always felt that way.
This band were so good. If they were around now, they would be headliners throughout the world. Their musicianship was second to none. It seems people just weren’t ready for an all girl band that kicked the asses of the male groups of the time. Shame. My daughter plays guitar and I sent her videos of Fanny playing live. She was just blown away by them.
My son just asked me, what's my favorite song? Badge by Cream. But since we live in the Philippines and you're a Fil/Am, let me turn you on to a great version by Fanny.
I grew up in Upstate NY in the 60's and 70's. I was a fan of 'Classic Rock' when it was just called 'Rock'. I listened to all the top bands of the time on the radio. It is SUCH A SHAME that this band was not included in with the other groups like Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin. This group predated the Runaways and they were GOOD! I only heard of this band recently from a friends FB page. I am sorry that they never got the recognition that they deserved.
I wish I had the power to go back in time and give them the chance they deserved but were robbed of.
Sorry to say this is the first time if heard these great talents, better later then never
I was in bands during the late 60's and 70's and incredibly, never heard of this group until just a few years ago. There are several videos of them on CZcams playing live and they really kicked ass, big time. Each was an excellent musician, great on their instruments and they all sang quite well. I can't think of a band today this loaded with talent!
That's because they never really had an original song that was a hit, but they always rocked.
@@jhandle4196 You are probably right, but whats a "hit"?
Being a hit song is about who's making the profit, not about talent. Thats why lots of the songs/music pumped around on radio stations or TV-shows, actually are shit, but someone makes the profit by owning rights...
These ladies are absolutely magnificent - such a shame I never heard of them at the time. Criminal, actually. So talented.
Ya the guys got big billing.
Soul, feeling, groove ... and perfection... God bless FANNY !!!
I heard fanny in the early 70s and can't understand why they never became global superstars of that era....fantastic musicians,Amazing stage presence.I was about 11 yrs old and had a big crush for June! Man could she play that guitar, up there with the best.
Wow! Just WOW! This is the cleverest rhythmic upgrade of any song I have heard! These outrageously talented musicians take a great song and transform it into ... THEIR OWN great song! It is SO refreshing to get a lively rhythm, solidly layered instrumentation, uncowering guitar solos, harmonizing vocals ... in a REMAKE of all things! Over the decades, there are only about two dozen songs that have captured my imagination enough to replay 40 times in a row, and I just added this one to that list. BRAVO! Wish I had heard this song decades ago: I could've pulled it out to play during dark times.
I was a huge Fanny fan in the early seventies - back in Britain. Looking at these stills - they seem precious never to be repeated moments in time. Incredibly atmospheric.
I was.....gonna.....say something....but, ursafan40 already said it! Wow. Fanny. Where have you been all my life?
This takes me back to the 70s when I first heard this. It's an absolutely fabulous version of Badge, which I used to listen to endlessly. So good to hear it again. I am now 72.
Have loved them for 50 years and was lucky enough to see them live in Cambridge back in 1973......great band
Lucky guy to have seen them live.
I saw them too. Just can’t remember where
What a great sound! I was listening to music when this band was playing but I never heard them. What a shame. Great energy,
I wish you a speedy recovery and never give up with anything or anyone who gets in your way 🙏🏼 ❤️.
Once was, before we were all destroyed by time. But the energy that remains is the strongest of any time in the last 100 years. Catch you in the big commune in the sky.
Stumbled across Fanny a few weeks ago while looking for "Bulldog"...watched their cover and thought...how come I've never heard of this band?
Just the other day I watched their documentary...thoroughly impressed. I was a teen in the 70's...and had never heard of them....such a shame...excellent musicians
Same here, i grew up with strawberry alarmclock, and never heard of them, and im now65!!!!!!
I am 67 years old and I have never heard of this band until now, they were really good.
71 here. Graduated in '70. Never knew these girls either but was like them. Need my punk again.
I agree. Im in my mid 50s and really like a tonnes of music made between 68 and 73 and Fanny is only recently getting pushed on youtube platforms .
I was living in the Chicago area in the early 70's and a dj Dex Card put on concerts at my high school field house, saw Fanny there and many other great shows for a few bucks.
This is one of the very best covers of a classic song.
Thanks! xx June@@derikuk2967
Better than ever ...
Saw Fanny and Humble Pie at the Fillmore East in 1972
Absolutely smashing cover of one of the greatest RnR songs of all time.
These women were so good!!! Sooo underrated; great musicians... The guitarist could have given clap
The best band that never really got their due!! They all play their asses off!!
I’m from Ohio and seen them at this time in there career, they opened for UFO, at an amusement park. It was great, I was 15 or 16 years old. Good times and good music and memories.
I walked into my local second hand store and found every record that Fanny ever put out and was in musical heaven - and then I woke up and realized it was just a great dream - Love these ladies
Can purchase 4 CDs plus a live CD at their website; better yet they get the coin.
Incredible. I am hearing about them and hearing them for the first time. What an amazing sound.
I was 13 years old when these girls got together. They are awesome. How did I miss them.
Whoever recorded this committed a crime! Fanny was such a tight band, and he tears it all apart with this sound. If in doubt, he should have recorded them in true mono, but with the punch that they had.
First , last, in between. It doesn't matter when Fanny was form or existed on the music scene. They where an excellent band and definitely left their mark.
I was in middle school in 1970-71, Fanny’s “Charity Ball” was on the radio a lot and on the jukeboxes too. Someone told me they were an “all chick” band. I had started a garage band so their musicianship impressed me tremendously. The harmonies are glorious!
What a great band! I still have a massive crush on June Millington!!
What the f*** We have 2023 and I discovered Fanny only yesterday!!! I feel totally betrayed!! Has the music world lived under a rock or what?
What a brilliant band! And female at the time! Go for it girls! An absolute wonder. Love them!!!
I discovered Fanny the week their 1 st album came out, Tower Records had a large Fanny display right at the front door and the album playing as l walked in, l still have that and their other albums, the yr was 1970
I had all their albums, through moving they got lost ...I was pissed and probably still am...Fanny deserves all the KUDOS for kicking ass...
More than a cover. They definitely put their own stamp on Badge.
Just simply amazing and I hope Jean has come along and is so much better. I've been playing since the 60's and first I have heard of them that I can remember.
So amazing. Can't get enough of this. The singing. The incredible drummer. The bass, the lead guitar, killer keyboards. Mind boggling great music. To have been part of something this great, no matter how brief, is a well lived life. God bless these ladies. Such great examples for my daughters and grand daughters and in fact for me and my sons and grandsons. Try something great is what Fanny inspires me to do.
Yes, there is something about Alice. Very competent, humble, down-to-earth; a great person overall. Check out the Women of Rock interview with her. A natural talent on drums. love her!
Saw them in person early 70's. The real deal.
Wow, I thought I heard everything there was to hear from the 70's...how did this band not become as famous and even more than some of the one-hit-wonders from that era??? What a loss to the music of that time... well... we can still help them out. Download some songs from them. Give them a shot at the RRHOF!!
Reminds me of how an all-female band, The Bangles, out-shown the original Manic Monday with their "cover" of Prince's song. But that was 16 years later. So in every sense, this was genuine pioneering achievement vocally, instrumentally, and in the musical arrangement.
I only discovered this band recently, and I’m kicking myself for having overlooked it until now. “Fanny” really rocked out!
I'd give it two thumbs up if I could.
Let the vibrations of the greatest music ever in humanity, heal all that are in need of healing. ❤
Sisters before Heart. All women before The Runaways.
The Pleasure Seekers - All women before Fanny ;)
Ever heard of Birtha ? all female band in the early seventies.
Attracted to fanny, the runaways were skanks
@@firmager1: Right, but totally different music and show... same with that Goldie quattro girls... Where Suzi came from. That was more of a show band. Fanny were the first all female real rock band, and with tight professional level and skill. And they didnt use external musicians for the recordings... they even worked for other artists like Barbra Streisand.
@@fibboobbif Pleasure Seekers wrote and recorded their own songs on a major label.. and those songs were Garage rock (What a way to die a prime example) Pleasure seekers then morphed into ''Çradle''
circa 1969... all female, sharing the stage with MC5 & Mountain etc.. still before Fanny.
I have only discovered Fanny recently. I was 12 when the debut album was released. Completely ignored by the Boston radio market. Badge is one of my favorite songs ... well done.
When GOD was passing out the talent he gave these girls a second helping, and a third as well
WTF! This Rocks! Im 60 and somehow missed this?
There is an organic purity to music recorded between 1966 and 72 that has never been duplicated. This is part of it. Can't define it, know it when I hear it.
Truth
This is 2020 and I drive about with Bowie, Led Zep, Van Halen, Benatar, Nirvana, Chilly Peppers ... and Fanny ... blasting from my car stereo
mediastarguest
YOU.... ...are ALIVE!
Смотрю 2022 году Фанни раньше знал. Это стиль Рок Баллад. Герлы очень талантлиаы Лайк
im 57 and how the hell did i not now about this band till now! great!
Thank you, Frank. I appreciate it so much!
Back then, there was SO much music, I don't think a person even could have taken it all in. Here we are 50 years later discovering GREAT bands from 50 years ago that, while amazing in their own right; for whatever reason just couldn't establish a presence in the onslaught of music that was the 1970's.
Now, I'm not calling "Fanny" bad in any stretch, but I stand by my saying of: "Even the WORST of yesterday is considerably better than the BEST of today." FFS, the TV show Family Guy put "Surfin' Bird" back on the charts 50-some years after the song's heyday.
Holy moly, I love Fanny! So amazing.
Lucky enough to see these Rockers live in Atlanta in the 70's. Their opening act was Hookfoot with Caleb Quaye. Fanny's performance was awesome, start to finish. It's a shame more people don't know them. They weren't just knocking down doors and ceilings, they were ignoring them. Fanny deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, or the hall needs to remove Rock and Roll from their name.
Luv the drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Wolfgangrx!
Very underrated during their heyday; a great band much admired by contemporary musicians such David Bowie.
Remember the wonderful lady saxophonist playing for Bowie at some outdoor event in London I think. Well done Bowie for sponsoring women musicians!
Wonder if they lived their life thinking their underrated
This group was much better than they were given credit for.
As a man I celebrate my fellow musicians because music has no set gender. Rejoice! You can be anything you want when you are a muscian!
You Ladys Rock. Thank you. Your PBS special brought me to tears, truly ❤️
I get tears in my eyes hearing Fanny rock out. Amazing music, trail blazing WOMEN. Thank you for everything Millington Sisters.. This track always floors me,
One of the best versions of Badge I’ve ever heard 👍
SERENITY for my soul.. at 51 havin been born in 1970 I somehow found you most talented souls and will forever be grateful.. can't seem to get enuff of your energy.. tyTYty for helpin me CHILLAX.. lol hugs.. tlc
fantastic simply the best
This was one dam great band that seems like time forgot what a huge mistake this was one of most talented bands that came out in the early 70s male or female these chicks could jam with da best of there time 💜👍💜👌💜✌💜😎💜
Thanks, Lloyd! Appreciate it!
I remember watching them on Midnight Special when I was a teenager.
Very good........
There just isn't enough Fanny in my life.
The cover has a different flavor than the original, so it's impossible to pass judgement on which is "better". We all have our preferences.
To me, the ending of the Fanny version is so much more satisfying than the abrupt ending in the Cream version, and I like the slightly faster tempo from Fanny. It sounds like they're having a blast playing it. Alice's drums are outstanding. Hell, *everyone* shines here.
The bass intro from the original is absolutely iconic, but I love the slightly Sgt. Pepper-y intro to this version. Fanny does justice to the bridge, which is the highlight of the Cream version. So energetic!
It's a damned fine cover from an unbelievably talented band.
It definitely has a different energy. Their performance serves the music.
The piano intro reminds me of “Lady” by LRB.
Love this rendition of this song.
Me to! I can really get into this version.
Good version of this Cream - Song !!
I was Class of '77 and Into all sorts of music, especially Rock-n-Roll...
So why have I not heard of these lady pioneers of rock until just recently..?!
I feel cheated...
I am totally amazed I never heard of this group before!
I can envision the members of Cream sitting in the front row, nodding their approval at this rendition. Well, that is, everyone except Ginger.
Ginger too toasted at this point
Ginger doesn't approve of anything! LOL!
@@mrfester42 He approved of my presence enough one night after a Masters of Reality gig at the WVU Mountainlair Ballroom in Morgantown, WV to sing with me! I had run into Daniel Rey going down the back stairs post-show & struck up a conversation. He invited me onto the bus for a beer, which I took him up on. We finished our bottles over music talk (I sing, & used to play rhythm guitar), and he gave me a cassette tape of the band's debut? release when my bassist & gal came looking for me, knocking on the bus door under the guise of giving me a ride home. Ginger was sitting up front by the door & on my way out I respectfully nodded to him & he nodded back, shaking my hand. For some reason, still not sure why, I busted out w/the Hee-Haw song, "Where, oh where are you tonight?" and Ginger joined in, other bandmates backing us as we crooned, "Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love. You met another and" we all unified in a big, spitty, "pffftt" raspberry w/Ginger & I face to face as I passed by him & headed down the bus stairs, singing, "you was gone." We all waved goodbye like old friends, tho I'd never met any of them 'til that night. I rejoined my jealous bassist & friendgurl in the parking lot, pocketing my new cassette & what would later grow to become a timeless memory. Back then (late 80's), I obviously knew who Ginger Baker was, but was clueless as to Mr. Rey's production credits & work w/other bands, the Ramones especially, or I'd have been even more in awe of the group as a whole & much less nonchalant about the experience.
@@TheSWolfe That's a great story and memory to have.
My comment was just an aside and made without too much thought.
@@mrfester42 Thanx, mrfester42 - I did have a tendency to stumble into moments like this in my younger days. I dunno, I thought yr comment was apt awa humorous. Stay safe/be well! sharonthedyslexicmess.
I wish I'd actually been to a Fanny concert. How exciting that must have been! However i did buy and listen to their records and as you can see, I still do!.
Love these guys. Still don't understand why I never heard of them at the time.
How did this band pass almost unnoticed?
Serous musicians. Not just a "girl group".
You get a band of women that play better than most of the boys and they get ignored.
Really!...Just the fact that they are so tight instrumentally and vocally should have gotten them much more recognition than they got. Saw them open for The James Gang in 1971 and it should have been the other way around.
I got serous in my blood! ;)
Thanks, ursafan40
They were famous in early 1970s in USA, UK, Europe too. Fanny, and a little bit later Birtha, all female bands. It was tough for women in rock, as Linda Ronstadt has stated in many interviews. And... they wrote songs, had many original songs. Linda Ronstadt was the Beyonce of the seventies, she did nothing but coversongs. Emmylou Harris and the hot band, did covers too. All female bands seemed to be more of an issue than all male bands, and female leadsinger with male musicians. Fanny was way ahead of her time.
Sadly, there was a very strong Boys Club back then. This band was very good. They should have been better known.
They not only nailed this song. Made it their own.
No, it belongs to Cream.
@Nelson Swanberg That's as may be, young man, but it originated with Cream. So Cream own it.
@@michaeligoe3935 OP never meant it as in it's their original they meant they covered it so well and in their own style.
@@seventhblasphemy408 Suppose it depends how you interpret the word "own".
Great cover, but it’s note for note except for the keys. The original is - well, the original. With seminal vocals and the Clapton / Harrison (uncredited) guitars.
Saw them on the Liverpool Stadium early seventies and was behind the amps on stage during the encore , happy daze
Ah, Fanny...you made us so proud back in the day. Your work hasn't aged a bit. One helluva band.
My lord! This gives me goosebumps. This band is a single instrument. Talk about tight.
Bang on.
The best all girl band of all time! Thank you!
GREAT BAND
STILL LISTEN TO THEM THEY ARE THE FIRST ALL FEMALE ROCK BAND
THAT I KNOW OF
FROM THE CALIFORNIA DAYS✌
Saw Fanny in early 70s in Birmingham UK and had good seats up front,a fabulous show.
I have never heard them before either... great vocals
Great cover!!!! Fanny ROCKS!!!
You know the songs of my youth, when I was dreamer. You are really good musician. Thanks, man! I mean, woman! Far out!
Fantastic cover
I Love their sound performing this song. You can tell how tight the band was and what accomplished musicians they were. In interviews they always said that they practiced all the time to prove that they were good musicians. At a time where prejudiced against women in rock and roll and sexism existed at a higher level than it does today. They definitely prove themselves to me! I just wish that they would have lasted longer. I know one of the sisters left because she said she was going to implode. I don't know the history of why she left or what the circumstances were, but I would have loved to have seen where they went if they would have stayed together. Of course they've gotten back together in recent years passed. They sound great and still have the talent. But when they were young and really at the most creativeness I just would have wished they could have put out more albums so we have a larger amount of their music. They were popular at the time and their popularity was growing. Had they stuck with it I think they would have really been some great rock stars at a more elevated level. But what we have is great I enjoy all the music. I've been a huge fan of Cream for many years. Cream was very gifted and amazing songwriters and musicians. I can't go as far as to say that Fanny out did Cream or out played Cream, but I can say that of all the bands that played this song Fanny does it the most Justice. Fanny did 'Badge' in their own style and it was a great. But Cream was definitely on a different level from Fanny at the time. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate Fanny because I love them and they were a talented group with a great original sound. That's what made them so special. And I'll always be grateful for the effort and all the music that they created.
I saw them many times in LA. Let me tell those who never had the good fortune to see them live. They were absolutely amazing. You sure didn't want to follow them on stage. Just ask Procol Harum.
Si
awesome.... glad to find another gem from Fanny
Thank you, Dana. Really appreciate it.
I could swear i heard a Boston intro for a second... that was 6 years later!
This group rocks too.
Please tell me what is a Boston intro - I am English!
