  • Today's episode from Ukhrul in Manipur features an enriching tour of the all women Ava Market, Korean dish experience at a popular restaurant cum bakery, local style chicken curry tasting at a daily meal hotel and a pulsating musical night experience at a local club premises. As the earlier ones, this schedule too was curated by our amazing host Ammo from Living Manipur.
This journey commenced with the visit to the Ava market which is an all women market in Ukhrul where one can find all groceries and kitchen essentials required by the local populace under one roof. A diverse range of fresh local ingredients on display at the counters run by the local womenfolk. As we navigated through the stalls, Ammo introduced us to some popular and some lesser known vegetables, beans, pulses, rice, dried fishes etc. This visit was an opportunity to have a better understanding of the culinary culture prevalent across the region.
The next stop was a lovely bakery cum restaurant named Mungkung Restaurant which is run by a husband and wife duo. Shaped by the growing Korean influence in the state, their menu had a delightful range of Korean dishes in place. After a heartening conversation with the passionate and warm lady owner, we decided to try the Kimbap. This classic appetizer was beautifully presented and it was quite good in taste.
The third and last food stop of the tour was a non descript daily meal eatery called Soso Rice Hotel. It is humble place that caters to the travelers and locals alike. The setting was similar to a rustic home with a small kitchen area and a cosy sitting area. The family running it stays in the adjacent room. The lady owner was busy preparing the dinner. We tried a small serving of the just prepared yen thongba or chicken curry. with light spices, this country chicken curry had a homely feel to it.
While returning to our homestay, we stumbled upon a musical night at the premises of a local club. The pulsating performances made us groove along with the frenzied audience. Ammo informed us how these shows are a frequent thing over there.
Overall we had a wonderful time exploring new flavours, sights and interactions.
**Despite the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, we made a conscious yet hard decision to proceed with our food video series from the state which was filmed between 30th Jan and 3rd feb 2023.
Our intention was to showcase the incredible warmth, love, kindness, camaraderie and enthusiasm we encountered during this immersive visit.
It's essential to acknowledge the complexities the state is going through, but we firmly believe in highlighting the genuine goodness of the people whom we met during this wonderful journey.
Throughout the five-day tour, we encountered a heartwarming display of hospitality, generosity and harmony. We want to reassure that our approach remains sensitive and respectful towards the ordeal being faced by the people of Manipur.**

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Ukhrul. The white salt cake (Machi in Tangkhul) is made from salty spring water by boiling the the salty spring water overnight (in Tangkhul it is found in few villages only. Grihang is one of the villages. **Any Tangkhul please correct me if I'm wrong). The root vegetable which you thought yam is actually Taro root (called Hangkorpai in Tangkhul).
Heimang (Khangkhuithei or Kabothei in Tangkhul) also known as Sumac. The sweetness in kabok is made from Sugarcane syrup.
I hope you will visit Ukhrul again and enjoy the pleasant scenic mountain and river sites (Camping/hiking/picnic) in and around Ukhrul area like Shirui kashong, phangrei, khangkhui cave, huishu river, shingcha wuyawon...
    Stay Blessed!

I visited Ukhrul for the first time this year. I was meant to go in 2022 for the Shiroy festival (a grand extravaganza), but I didn't manage to make it. This year, I resolved to go before returning to Mumbai for work. So, one lovely weekend, my cousin, a couple of friends, and I journeyed there. The roads were dusty and quite rough in places, but as the saying goes, bad roads lead to beautiful places. Despite the road's condition, Ukhrul is a truly splendid place. Though the road may be rough, the scenic beauty overshadowed it. I would describe it as an ideal escape from the bustling cities. The weather was chilly, though not excessively so. I strolled around the town, observing children playing, small streams flowing, and in the distance, I could catch the aroma of delectable dishes cooked with care and devotion.
If you find yourself in Ukhrul, trying pork or chicken prepared in the Tangkhul style is a necessity. For vegetarians, there's their unique version infused with various flavours. The preparation is simple, and perhaps this simplicity elevates the taste of the dishes. My companions and I decided to order a Thali, as we knew we'd be perplexed by the multitude of choices available. Oh boy, when that locally grown rice, slightly sticky, combined with Sirarakhong Chillies touches your palate, it's like experiencing Nirvana. I might sound exaggerated, but trust me, that's how it feels. Accompanied by a small serving of daal (lentil curry), we relished it as if it were our last meal on Earth. After devouring the entire feast, we inquired about the cost, and it was reasonably priced. I'm definitely planning to return to the same place soon.
After leaving the eatery, we went to meet some friends. By then, the wind had picked up, and it was time to head home. As dusk settled in along with rain, we started our journey back to Imphal. It's no surprise that a renowned Manipuri singer, Naba Volcano, once said, "Ukhrul da thamoi lei houre," which translates to "My heart is in Ukhrul."
P.S. The quintessence of Indian food is the Thali. However, in Manipur, the epitome of the Thali takes on a local twist with dishes ranging from Iromba to Tangkhul-style pork curry.
    Cheers

One correction: Hindi wasn't banned. Only Hindi cinemas in local film theatres. Mainly to protect local film industry. We got Hindi movies via DVDs and TV channels.
Also Korean cultural introduction came with introduction of cable tv. Funny thing is that all the kids wanted to watch Cartoon Network and the Cartoon Network channel and the Korean Arirang channel were usually next to each other. Then Arirang itself became popular.

Your guide was completely wrong about the salt (no offense to anyone) and his descriptions about the local produce were half baked. We call feemented soayabeans as "theisui" in ukhrul and not "hawaijar" and perilla seeds as "hanshi". Again no offense to anyone! Happy food vlogging!
