The Worst World Cup Match: A game so bad, FIFA had to investigate

  • In the 1982 World Cup, West Germany and Austria played a match that should've been an all time great, and instead led to complaints of collusion, and barely resembled the sport. Whether you call it football or soccer, just call this one The Worst.

      Tell me this: who did anything wrong? Who did anything stupid? Germany was up by a goal which led them advance - why waste energy you can save it for the next round? Austria was down but would still advance - why waste energy if the only thing you'd gain was actually facing stronger opponents in the next sage?
      Can you blame them for wanting to have the best chance at success in the tournament? If an NFL team runs down the clock, you don't cry about wrong-doing, if an NBA team fouls at the end of the game to have a chance to catch up you don't cry about wrong-doing, if any team rests their starters in a meaningless game to save them for the post-season you don't cry about wrong-doing. So why here? It was a stupid system, so they had to change it. And as disgraceful as it was, it was just the logical thing to do.

      @ofs82 Před 3 lety +1

      Well, the problem was that because the other game had already happened, after West Germany went 1-0 up, both teams realised that outcome suited them. If they hadn't conspired before the match to it, but come to an agreement to keep the game as it was after the goal was scored, then there's nothing FIFA could do.

    • @mahmoud6843
      @mahmoud6843 Před 3 lety +7

      @@DrZaius3141 The situations you described doesn’t apply to the Algerian situation for 2 reasons. One, this wasnt a game in where the goal came in almost at the end of the game and the Germans decided to run the clock out. This was a game where the Germans scored early and the Austrians said you know what this result helps us and them so lets just waste time. The equivalent would be if an Nfl team, like say the Panthers scored a TD early against the Bucs in the first quarter and both teams decide to go three and out and punt without any attempt at scoring or equalizing throughout the entire game to keep the Saints from making the playoffs. Two, those weren’t just two teams. West Germany and Austria had deep history and in the last World Cup Austria had humiliated the Germans in an upset. Do you think that if the Patriots after the loss in the Super Bowl in 2007 met the Giants in a playoff match the next year and we’re talking about the same two teams that met in the Super Bowl, do you think for one second that the Patriots wouldn’t want to beat the Giants and humiliate them? The system was bad yes and FIFA had to change it after this debacle, but dont confuse what happened here to a game where an NBA teams start fouling at the end of the game or an NFL team decides to run the clock out.

So we watched this game, already stunned that Germany was playing for its soccer life. You can imagine how we felt when even I, a total novice, recognized that once Germany had scored, Austria sat back and said, 'OK, you're going to advance and so are we, so let's not wear ourselves out.' And both teams proceeded to just pass the ball back and forth in a lackadaisical manner, while the stadium was multi-decibels high in outraged whistles from the crowd.

Knowing that both of them would advance to the next round with a 2-0 German victory thanks to goal differential, they colluded to produce that exact result. Qualifiers were changed to occur simultaneously to prevent this scenario from occurring again.

The Germans were full of American steroids themselves. So technically doping was not cheating yet at this particular time. You can find clips of Beckenbauer and Rummenigge talking about this. They got steroid shots in the butt at halftime along with their bananas and orange juice. It was just considered science at the time, and most ambitious teams, like Germany, used whatever was available to win.

But my point is this: Even today, when we see group stage games, we see the teams calming down their play after achieving what they needed to go through to the next round. After the Germans got their goal, they had every right to calm down the play and secure advancing. They cannot be asked to play for the benefit of Algeria. I cannot see anything wrong with that, except if they had an agreement with the Austrian team to do so. If there was not plain & clear agreement made between the 2 teams there is 100% nothing wrong with what happened. That changes if there was an agreement, because that would be horrible, and disgraceful, and should be punished. "Participating" countries would send captured dissidents to torture centers. (Peru didn't have a representative at the secret meeting where the operation was created.
