The Worst World Cup Match: A game so bad, FIFA had to investigate
Vložit

- In the 1982 World Cup, West Germany and Austria played a match that should've been an all time great, and instead led to complaints of collusion, and barely resembled the sport. Whether you call it football or soccer, just call this one The Worst.

Go take off your blinkers!!!
In Bonney wee Scotland everyone knows about American cabal wars!!
Aye don't argue with a Scotsman Yankee!!!
FIFA changed the format to prevent such "no wrong doing" from ever reoccurring. That's alright that's okay.
Tell me this: who did anything wrong? Who did anything stupid? Germany was up by a goal which led them advance - why waste energy you can save it for the next round? Austria was down but would still advance - why waste energy if the only thing you'd gain was actually facing stronger opponents in the next sage?
Can you blame them for wanting to have the best chance at success in the tournament? If an NFL team runs down the clock, you don't cry about wrong-doing, if an NBA team fouls at the end of the game to have a chance to catch up you don't cry about wrong-doing, if any team rests their starters in a meaningless game to save them for the post-season you don't cry about wrong-doing. So why here? It was a stupid system, so they had to change it. And as disgraceful as it was, it was just the logical thing to do.
@@DrZaius3141 You wrote all of that to eventually agree the system was stupid, even tho the comment was focused on how FIFA changed the rule lol
@@DrZaius3141 I think that if two NFL teams tried to run down the clock after halfway through the first quarter after one scored a TD, sure there would be massive cries of foul play.
Well, the problem was that because the other game had already happened, after West Germany went 1-0 up, both teams realised that outcome suited them. If they hadn't conspired before the match to it, but come to an agreement to keep the game as it was after the goal was scored, then there's nothing FIFA could do.
@@DrZaius3141 The situations you described doesn’t apply to the Algerian situation for 2 reasons. One, this wasnt a game in where the goal came in almost at the end of the game and the Germans decided to run the clock out. This was a game where the Germans scored early and the Austrians said you know what this result helps us and them so lets just waste time. The equivalent would be if an Nfl team, like say the Panthers scored a TD early against the Bucs in the first quarter and both teams decide to go three and out and punt without any attempt at scoring or equalizing throughout the entire game to keep the Saints from making the playoffs. Two, those weren’t just two teams. West Germany and Austria had deep history and in the last World Cup Austria had humiliated the Germans in an upset. Do you think that if the Patriots after the loss in the Super Bowl in 2007 met the Giants in a playoff match the next year and we’re talking about the same two teams that met in the Super Bowl, do you think for one second that the Patriots wouldn’t want to beat the Giants and humiliate them? The system was bad yes and FIFA had to change it after this debacle, but dont confuse what happened here to a game where an NBA teams start fouling at the end of the game or an NFL team decides to run the clock out.

Still laughing at the thought of FIFA investigating corruption
collusion, not corruption
@@Jonathanizer It is corruption too because the president of FIFA was german
It was my first World Cup, and only because I had a 9-year-old son and we were living in Germany. We watched as many games as possible, and I got hooked. So we watched this game, already stunned that Germany was playing for its soccer life. You can imagine how we felt when even I, a total novice, recognized that once Germany had scored, Austria sat back and said, 'OK, you're going to advance and so are we, so let's not wear ourselves out.' And both teams proceeded to just pass the ball back and forth in a lackadaisical manner, while the stadium was multi-decibels high in outraged whistles from the crowd.
And that's why since 1982 the third games in group play have been played simultaneously.
Hee-hee. No collusion. Where have we heard that recently?
to be fair the best they could have really done is made the rule change they did
@@just-give-me-a-handle You're right - if you can't rely on the players to be honest, you have to make a rule that forces honesty..
@@katheliz1938 teh thing is, that technically speaking, there was no way for fifa to prevent this collusion from happening. Every player on both teams was smart enough to come to the same conclusion (that Germany had to win by 1 or 2 goals for both Austria and Germany to advance) without having to "negotiate" with the other team.
@@just-give-me-a-handle Yes, it became a 'friendly' game. The crowd whistled all the way through the game, once they saw what was happening. No one was happy.
@@katheliz1938 I think it's unsportsmanlike to conduct a game like this, but i also think there was no actual collusion, because there was no need for collusion. When both teams advance with the status quo, no team with have an incentive to actually attack. That's not pretty, but also not the same as actually fixing a match.

The '66 loss against Korea generated a saying in Italian that translates to "It's been a Korea" to indicate a rough and depressing defeat...
Hah, kinda like how Brazilians today have the idiomatic expression of "the Germans scored again" to denote something bad has happened.
Apparently the term "Mickey Mouse" (used for describing when something {i.e an institution or performance etc} is deemed farcical, disastrous, or inadequate), made it's way into the English vernacular when the term was printed in an English newspaper referring to England's performance after losing to the USA at the 1950 World Cup... @@enzotansingco2199 Germans are not know to be trash talkers. So this surprised me a lot
Since this wasn't explained very well, let me clarify. The reason for the collusion was because both Austria and West Germany knew the result of the Algeria match earlier that day. Knowing that both of them would advance to the next round with a 2-0 German victory thanks to goal differential, they colluded to produce that exact result. Qualifiers were changed to occur simultaneously to prevent this scenario from occurring again.
I disagree, I thought it was well explained.
I also disagree. He quite clearly stated that Algeria lose with a Germany win of 2 or less, and continue with any other result.

@@affinity4disobedience33 as Algerian i never heard this information before and I'm curious now.. Can you send me an article or a source of what u just said??
The entire world was rooting enthusiastically against Germany and Austria for the rest of that tournament. Even my my grandfather, who hated Italian football with a passion, was on his feet cheering for them in the final because of how angry he was with the Germans over the Austria match.
@@@affinity4disobedience33 That is still no excuse for what the Germans did. Besides, doping was not illegal in 1982 because it was relatively new. The Germans were full of American steroids themselves. So technically doping was not cheating yet at this particular time. You can find clips of Beckenbauer and Rummenigge talking about this. They got steroid shots in the butt at halftime along with their bananas and orange juice. It was just considered science at the time, and most ambitious teams, like Germany, used whatever was available to win.
@@politicallycorrectredskin796 Doping has been illegal since 1966, and tests took place since then. And for what you said, you are absolutely wrong, Beckenbauer absolutely denying these claims. But my point is this: Even today, when we see group stage games, we see the teams calming down their play after achieving what they needed to go through to the next round. After the Germans got their goal, they had every right to calm down the play and secure advancing. They cannot be asked to play for the benefit of Algeria. I cannot see anything wrong with that, except if they had an agreement with the Austrian team to do so. If there was not plain & clear agreement made between the 2 teams there is 100% nothing wrong with what happened. That changes if there was an agreement, because that would be horrible, and disgraceful, and should be punished. Of course, neither me, nor you, nor anybody else, can say for sure if they did or did not have that agreement.
I saw this match on tv and it was a scandal. Without the qualification of Germany, We would have a semi final France Algeria, between the best teams playing a technical football. A shame.
You wish. In a group with Spain and England they'd be lucky to finish 2nd and still get eliminated from the World Cup.
I remember this game and it was disgraceful. Four years earlier Argentina had to win by 4 goals against Peru to reach the World Cup Final, and in another very suspect match, Argentina won 6-0 and thus reached the final. Argentina where also the hosts.
Genial Harry Grout Needless to say that Argentina was going through a dictatorship.
Another point is that the Peruvian goalkeeper Quiroga had been born in Argentina. To this day, in Brazil he is known as 'Que droga' which translates as 'what crap'
One of the Peruvian players said that they were nervous and that’s how Argentina won
A Peruvian senator (Genaro Ledesma) said that Peru agreed to throw the match for political purposes. Look up "Operation Condor" for more info. Short version: In order to stop the spreading of communism, the USA provided planning, coordinating, training on torture, technical support, and military aid to far-right South American dictators. "Participating" countries would send captured dissidents to torture centers. (Peru didn't have a representative at the secret meeting where the operation was created. But there are evidences of them participating). Anyway, according to the Peruvian senator, Peru agreed to throw the match in exchange for Argentina accepting 13 political dissidents.
Jose Velasquez, widely recognized as one of Peru's best defensive midfielders of all time, was substituted at half time. He later said that the Peruvian government pressured them to lose the match.
Multiple Peruvian players (including captain Hector Chumpitaz) said that Argentinian's dictator brought Henry Kissinger into Peru's dressing room before the game. The players thought it was weird because the Argentine dictator should had been in his own players' dressing room. When asked about it later, Kissinger said he had no recollect of the event.
And senator Ledesma? That wasn't just a claim to a newspaper. He made that claim to an Argentinian court set up to investigate human rights abuses.
This is like an episode of Weird Rules where Ryan says something like "they had to make a rule so that teams couldn't rig World Cup group stages anymore."
It's going to happen again in 2026 with three team groups
I think if everything was "normal " at that time, Algeria might ended up going far in that World Cup. It was unbelievable what had happened in that game.
algeria will come back in next world cup i saw somewhere they are in a lot of undefeatable game streak
they will inshallah
They would not have finished above England in that group, pure and simple.
I'd say the worst World Cup Match was Portugal vs Netherlands in 2006. There was no bribery, collusion or bad refereeing, just some of the dirtiest players in the world committing foul after foul after foul. I think there were a total of 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards in that single match, and there really should have been more.
"Worst"?! It was awesome!
I love the scene where two players from Portugal and the Netherlands are sitting next to each other at the sideline and are watching the last minutes of the game while they both have seen a red card. ^^
The legendary the battle of Nuremberg
Noooooo, that game was amazing, violence is all we needed on the pitch...
Games like this will happen a lot more when the World Cup expands to 48 teams and 3 team groups
They could've at least done 12 groups of 4 instead of 16 groups of 3.
Excellent point sir.
Premier Stingy They couldnt have tho because then 24 teams would advance and you wouldnt be a able to have a round of 24 then a round of 12 then 6 then 3 cause u cant have a final of 3
The best why to do the 16 groups of 3 is to only have the winners go through to the next round. That makes it so there will be no favour done
Best way of ladder is double-lose ladder, this means when you lose two times you are out. This would make sure that you have 2 best teams in the finals. Because if two best teams met for example in 1/16 one would be eliminated and this means that you dont have one team that deserved finals in final.
Being algerian I cannot forget this complot play against our team, and the least I could say is ''shame on them''. This short video is a good summary of what happened that day.
Who’s here after that Raiders VS Chargers game
What about the first Italy v Chile in the 1960s? Kung fu kicks, horribly brutal fouls and someone punching his opponent so hard he broke his nose... it was the match that eventually led to the introduction of yellow and red cards.
The Battle of Santiago.
I watched this, back in 1982, when I was 15... After the goal, both teams retreated into their own halves and stayed there. Despicable. There were some pointed observations from the English commentators, too.
The greatest crime in this video was showing Marco Tardelli's goal in the 82 final without showing the full celebration.
Greatest celebration.

NFL related: If the Colts lose this Sunday (January 9, 2022), the Raiders and the Chargers can do the same thing, as both make the playoffs if they tie. (Not Soccer related but the same "I won't try if you don't try" scenario. lol
Just read that on CBS Sports hopefully Colts win
@@Ebduduw15 -- People forget that the Colts have to win a game in their own house of horrors.
IND L at JAX
PIT W at BAL in OT, that eliminated both BAL & IND

You almost predicted it
Well at least we beat Germany in the first game after all the trash talk they said about us
Oh u actually played on the field at the 82 worldcup and beat the Germans? Lol
@@aandlwireless every time your team wins you say "we won". And when your team loses you say "they lost". It's basic grammar my friend.
@@rodrigosoto4827 for u. I am not playing or have any impact on what a team does so i have no right to claim accolades for it. I mean the USA Womans Team just won the world cup. Even so i am usa citizen i wouldn't say we won. Because first off i am not a woman and second off i had nothing to with it i didn't play or coached them. So the usa woman's team won. Not me. Not we. They did.
@@aandlwireless I see your point. Still, that's how people talk about sports.
@Arthur Looby well you must be a HUGE soccer fan 😂 don't be the ignorant person the rest of the world expects you to be.
It's called anschluss in German. It happened before, in 1938 - that time the Austrian team actually had to pull out as Austria ceased to exist as a state.
Excellent video. Well put together mate👏🙌👍
My parents keep telling me about it, 4 years ago when we got out of the group stages and faced Germany every single algerian looked for a revenge. That game in 1982 was shameful
Well, we aren't exactly proud of it. Better to lose than to win that way.
Que se besen (let them kiss) is what people say in weddings in Spain (just FYI)
Thank you for this video. Subscribed !
5:25: funny to see Austrian striker Walter Schachner gets booked *'for actually trying'!* 😂😂😂 The irony is West Gemany loses 3-1 to Italy in the final which starred Poalo Rossi.....
.....who only came back from a ban for match fixing! 😂😂
@Doge di Amalfi thank god you were at hand to save his story.
@@padraic773 Yeah, I wasn't having those match fixing allegations until a couple of vowels were switched around.
he was acquitted by the judiciary, only the italian football association blocked him for 2 years! the only "evidence", a 2 min call with one of the condemned, he said nothing in this call about match fixing, that's why he was free after the police investigation!! btw, this happens in every nation, so many money comes from asia, Germany too find a few player guilty, the difference is, the Italian continue to investigate, that's why you hear only about Italy, what you think it's going on in Spain, or the UK, all this money from Asia,Meddle East?? In Spain an investigation was stopped, it was about Real, Barcelona and Matches in Asia, the Spanish football Ass. let stop the investigation with help from politics!!

Peru lost to Argentina 6-0 in 1978 in one of the shadiest games ever.
At the time, the Peru team had a goalie who just happened to be born in Argentina.
@@englishciderlover7347 Ah man, if *that* isn't shady.......😮
@@englishciderlover7347 This game is now generally excepted as being a total farce, the Dictatorships of each country had agreed to allow Argentina to win by more than 4 goals, to avoid Argentinian elimination. I agree the Argentina Dictator ruined that world cup

I want the Potugal vs Netherlands game removed!
It was great!
the me Tunisia didn’t play in that game. They were in Group G along with Belgium, Panama, and England
Little did Germany know Mexico would defeat them in 2018
Juan Hernandez little did Mexico know that they are a population of drug addicted retards who need to illegally cross the border. Oh and little did Mexico know that Germany won the cup in 2014. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Mexico has never won a world cup.
devait this but unironically

Little they did know that South Korea would beat them in last group stage game
for some reason this ones not on the worst playlist, glad yt suggested it to me since i just ran thru that playlist
I remember this match! There was a play I'll never forget: a defense player for Austria ou Germany kicked the ball pass the midfiedl. A lonely defender got the ball and saw that nobody had come after it. He misinterpreted the moment, probably because wasn't paying attention to the what was going on and caught the ball with his hands. The referee blew the wistle immediately and everyone laughed at him. It is the worst game I've ever seen.
What about the 2002 Italy vs South Korea game
Charlie Taaffe what about it? That match wasnt worse than this 1982 one. No way. You can argue it was more corrupt because the officials were clearly for the Koreans, but the 2 teams actually gave an effort and produced a watchable match. W. Germany and Austria in 1982 just passed the ball for 90 minutes.
And, oh yeah, there's the fact that....Italy choked.
that was rubbish..total rubbish....italy was very strong with world class players like vieri, maldini, totti, del piero and they didnt choke..the refs totally ruined the game...that was my first world cup and i remember it very well...i am croatian and remember what happened to italy against us in the group also :D refs had something against italy on that tournament..that game was a travesty but this with germany and austria I toally understand
Bad refereeing =/= match fixing. There have been many many many bad referee decision in the world cup before and since.
Evidence of this please?
I think what really stands out is how blatant both teams were about it. They were corrupt, and they didn't care who knew because they had the entirety of FIFA on their side.
This is now why all final group stage matches are played at the same time...to prevent this from happening again.
To be fair on the "finish laughing at Italian soccer", check the upload year, and who was in the World Cup that year.
Also "Karma finally caught up to West Germany, where they would lose to Italy". I think they might have been aware of the duality there.
Even then the joke don't make sense. Italy missing a World Cup in 60 years should not really be a big deal, it's something that happens. On the other hands you have teams participating time and again only to make fools of themselves.

I can hear Toby Charles voice in the PBS show "Soccer Made in Germany" during the 1982 WC game West Germany vrs Austria fixed game " Oh this is bad, this is awful !"
thank you for that pause to laugh hahah
Not only there was this game but also the semi final in Sevilla against France, where a french player (Battiston) was amost killed and the referee didnt even whistle foul! 90% of the people were happy with Italy's victory.
I remember watching this W.Germany vs Austria at home on TV. It was crushingly obvious what was going on, totally cringeworthy.
They prosecute for match fixing off the field but not ON it........corrupt, corrupt, corrupt FIFA
I vividly remember that. Believe me: EVERYBODY in Austria was outraged. What a scandal that was.
Great video man! . Let them kiss!, actually "Que se Besen" came from the spanish local crowd, which is what people chant in weddings over there.
Would love to see a documentary on how the German and Austrian players felt about that match and the fall out
one of the german players came to algeria in 2010 and and asked for forgiveness
There are some interviews with German players. Uli Stielecke said that they feeled a bit ashamed, but it in the end was their job to win the game and to qualify for the next round.
I almost cried when I saw Algeria score against Germany at the last minute of the extra time. It was without a doubt the hardest fought game by Germany in 2014. Algeria so deserved to win.
