- Jonathan Glazer’s latest delves into the domestic sphere of the Hoss family, headed by the sinister Commandant Rudolf Hoss (played by Christian Friedel), who orchestrated the operations at Auschwitz with chilling precision. Set against the backdrop of Hoss’s career peak, the narrative delves into the harrowing reality of the Holocaust by juxtaposing the mundane with the macabre through the lens of the Hoss family.

A small trivia
Amon Goeth the Commandant of Plazsow (played by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List) makes a silent appearance in this film. He was one of the Hauptsturmführers at the SS Headquarter in Berlin where Oswald Pohl was discussing on the plan on how to exterminate the Hungarian Jews. His name was even mentioned when they were doing a roster on who was present in the meeting.
The "evil" part of Hedwig's reactions is that we all seem to know that it could be us, acting the exact same way - and we’re all afraid of that this is part of our inner self…
Indeed, the director Jonathan Glazer said in an interview that he wanted to portray the family as normal as possible, that way it relates more and makes audiences to self reflect.
I’d describe the sound as industrial, which fits the scenario-the Nazis approaching the Final Solution as a form of industrial production.
IMO they are two sides of the same coin. Schindler´s List is heartwarming and warm, whereas I see Zone of Intrest as an ice cold film. The question is: Can Zone of Intrest stand the test of time? I think it can
Completely agree.
If both films were on TV on the same night and I was flicking through the channel's, I'm pretty sure Schindler's List would get left on.
It did leave an impression on me, made me watch it twice in cinemas, but time will tell.
Very nice review! Once you've seen the movie, it grows within you on the days following
The scene where the kid overhears the guards discussing the prisoners fighting over an apple is gutting.
I don't know how you can even compare these two films (outside of Nazi's and the holocaust). One shows pretty much EVERYthing terrifying including a crazy psychotic villain.......while the other is terrifying for what it DOESN'T show but instead implies through its soul lacking and clueless (while self serving) pragmatists. Even the endings were at the opposite ends of the spectrum, one overly emotional (baiting) and the other as matter-of-fact pragmatic and disturbing as its dehumanised characters.
This comment terrifies me
@@Dani_rohr_ why does it terrify you?
The comparison is clickbait. It was meant to reel us in. It worked, but I was not convinced.
It was a very good film, but I thought Schindler's List was the better movie.
Agreed, I re-watched Schindler’s List recently and that is superior, The Zone of Interest comes close, I can’t remember any other films that are as good since SL.
@@kelaruandfulton SL is a too much Hollywodesk view. There are no feelings that need to be focused on. There is no way of showing what happened.
Yes, I find it fascinating the way Zine of Interest uses sound. It doesn’t show a lot but you hear a lot, so it relies on the human imagination to ‘fill in the blanks’ and that can do a better job than seeing what happened. Other films do this, but Zone of Interest excels at it.
I prefer Zone to Schindler.
I think Schindler's List is an elite film and it's in the top ten films from the American Film Institute for that reason. But it's a totally different film. Spielberg is a man filled with hope. Schindler was a totally different man than Hoss, obviously. And Schindler's List is about a man who saved 1100 Jews. The entire perspective of the film is different than Zone of Interest which sets out to show us the banality of evil - Schindler's List is historically accurate about the critical players - Goethe was that evil - he was actively engaged in shooting prisoners. Hoss is a different kind of camp commandant - just doing his job. It reminds me of Daniel Goldhagen's book Hitler's Willing Executioners. Schindler's List is one of the most visually impressive films in history - the girl in the red coat was in the Thomas Keneally novel so was not a Spielberg embellishment as some dumbass critics like to imply.
And remember, Schindler's List was based on the novel by Thomas Keneally who did not have all the historical documentation available to him at the time of his writing. Thus there is creative licence as there was with the Adaptation to film where Ben Kingsley's Stern is an amalgamation of several people. In a movie you have to simplify historical elements such as when Schindler sees what is happening to Jews from horseback - this didn't happen. The murders “simply made him more determined to help as many Jews as he could.” In a film, of course, it is more challenging to portray gradual determination rather than a single moment that inspires action. If they don't do this the film would need to be 9 hours instead of 3. And it doesn't actually matter to the story - the point is the man changed from a profiteer to a saviour and that was because of their treatment. And the only reasonable reason that Schindler would give up the entirety of his wealth is out of guilt or shame so it is then plausible that he would also feel guilty for not doing more and for pissing away so much money on useless crap that will only remind him that the pin he is wearing was a person's life.
I'd also give a shout-out to Jojo Rabbit as a great satire on the subject.
Rudolph Hess.. not Ross.
Apologies, we got it wrong, I believe it’s Rudolf Hoss 😁
@@kelaruandfulton Actually, none of those, neither Hess nor Hoss. His family name is Höss, the umlaut phonetic sign is rarely used in English. czcams.com/video/uzFzQVP8M8U/video.html
@@kelaruandfulton Hess on google.😁
The pronunciation error may have occurred because there is a better-known Nazi, called Rudolf Hess (who was even detained in the United Kingdom after flying clandestinely trying to make a deal with the British, without informing his superiors in the Nazi Party). In the film, there is another Rudolf, Rudolf Höss.
Thanks for the explanation and interesting to read online about Rudolf W R Hess, that deserves a film too! 😁
Yes, much more intelligent and without the "I should have done more" sentimentality
