ℹ️ This video covers how to implement some basic judo principles and techniques to enhance the anaerobic capacity of rugby players.
👉 I talk about where it best fits into the rugby season, and why certain judo drills can be used to improve a rugby player’s training and eventually performance.
🏉 During the GPP phase you might have aerobic running drills in place for fitness, though you could organise judo based drills to improve anaerobic capacity during that time too. This could be done in conjunction with skills sessions, or even after a gym session. Here’s an example session:
💥 UPPER STRENGTH SESSION EXMAPLE
1a. Bench Press | 3 x 5 @ 80%
2a. Military Press | 3 x 5 @ 80%
3a. Chin Ups | 3 x 5 @ 80%
4a. Reverse Flies | 3 x 12
4b. Inverted Row | 3 x 12
JUDO WRESTLING CONDITIONING w RUGBY SKILLS⤵️
5a. Kesa Gatame Holds | 3 x 10s
5b. Rugby Static Passing | 3 x 10 e/side
6a. Mune Gatame Holds | 3 x 10s
6b. Rugby Handling Waves | 3 x 30s
7a. Live Wrestling | 45s ON : 180s OFF* x 5
*(complete STATIC passing drills during the rest).
📈WEEKLY PROGRESSION EXAMPLES
💡1 - Increase sets from 5 to 7 of live wrestling
💡2 - Increase time to 60s for the live wrestling
💡3 - Bring in DRILL 3 prior to live wrestling and use it like this:
Go every 30s for 5 mins (rolling clock) | ~5s to ‘Win the Space’ with ~25s recovery to find a new partner...Rest 4-5mins after!

Great video mate, I think a lot of basic grappling principles could help rugby players so much!
Too often rucking, tackling and other contact situations aren't even seen as a skill, players are just told "hit ruck harder". Stuff like this helps with preparation for both skills and conditioning

Specific drills, what you get the guys to do during the long rest periods (I know you mentioned some basic handling stuff)
Also a progression into proper contact
Love this video. I am 46 and have been doing Judo for 16 years and been playing Rugby foir 10 years. I also Wresled in the US Army.There are some Judo drills that can be utlized fir Rugby training to include grip strength, leg and back strength and coordination.Also BJJ drills and Greco Roman is also great for Rugby. Please do another video like this.

I am judo player myself, although a bit broken now😂 I was asked by our local Rugby club to come and do some judo with them. Im not a rugby player but have vast experience in sports and coaching and I used some of this tonight at the local ladies Rugby club and the session went really well. So thank you 👍

Yes indeed, no gis were worn in the video. Although I take the principles from Judo as that’s my personal background. Grappling in general I suppose, so I could have called it BJJ or Wrestling for Rugby, though I have more experience in Judo.
Wrestling for rugby drills are the best and more sport specific for rugby than Judo. It also incorporates much higher intensity and multiple lower body and leg take downs which is not done in Judo. Judo is a bit softer and more suitable for water polo or soccer players. If you want the rugby boys to be tough then switch to wrestling instead. 😉
