- The locally-built Toyota Hilux GR Sport is unlike your average Hilux. This special edition is not just a sticker pack either, as Jacob Moshokoa does a deep dive into this butch-looking bakkie.
In this video review he looks at the upgraded setup and suspension, what you get for your money, how it compares to its number one rival, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak.
Is this the Hilux to buy before the all-new generation model breaks cover in 2025?

Mine is a 2009 toyota Hilux double cab with 869 000ks on the cluster and I have never ever opened the engine whatsoever. I'm pretty confident ima hit the 1 million mark with ease
Now this is insane.😎💪🏿💯
My Dad has a 2002 Hilux. Never had any major issues and it drives on gravel.
Ya coz of the fuel u use in Tanzania fuel is shit
which engine are you having?
It is interesting how many Ford Ranger drivers, supporters are commenting about the Hilux. The more they criticize the more Toyota ships those Hiluxes off the dealership floors. People who buy Toyota know what exactly their in for. It is a simple bakkie not overly complicated by technology, i for one don't mind that screen. To some extent i do agree that Toyota is taking us for a ride like in the Legend 50 there is no heated & cooled seats but for some odd reason the seats are perforated & no auto wipers but for what it is intended, it does that beautifully. I have noticed that almost everyone reviewer from Australia to SA are saying the ride quality is bad or not up to standard, I drove the petrol version V6 back in 2017, i never had issue with the ride quality then traded in for a 2.8 GD6 Legend 50 and still loving the ride quality. The only bakkie i can 100% say it is exceptional on ride quality was the previous version of the Amarok especially with that V6 that's it., the rest are just bakkies, nothing exceptional, just depends on your preference. The Ford Ranger is better than Hilux campaign is not deterring those Hilux die hard from buying, if i had the money i will buy it.
I'm with you 100%. Simplicity and reliability.
I'm a Tow Truck driver. Guess how many Fords I tow compared to Toyotas in a week. Hilux you beaut 😂
20 fords and 1 Toyota
You mean Fault Trucks🤣
Toyota needs to step up. The interior designers are doing this car dirty😪
Tru
It's a decade old car
...It's a bakkie.
@@thamsanqazulu3801other bakkies have good interiors

That's true my brother,my father's Toyota Hilux hips reached 1 000 000 kms it still goes even now proper Bakkie❤ I love Toyota
Toyota GR Sport 1 million rand = 165 kW | Ford Ranger Raptor 1.2 million = 292 kW. Toyota really knows how to pull the wool over their loyal followers, what a joke. 🤡
Hilux sell it after 5 years....800k...
Ford...500k if your luckey...
Plus the raptor gives 5km per liter...all fun and games the first tank ...both my friends sold there raptors within the first 3 months..
most ppl can't even handle 165kw. Thing about horsepower is just a talk point on a street. 292kw is impressive but can you handle that amount?
Owned a legend 50 and now own a Ranger Raptor. The fords interior is miles ahead in terms of features. Its laughable how far behind the Hilux is.
It's a 4 cylinder tractor...enuff said
Ford did milk their previous Gen so guys Please leave Toyota to Milk dry this Gen. I do believe Toyota's next Gen will blow people's minds.
Jacob, I always enjoy your reviews. You sunny and happy personality set you apart from just about every other persons reviewing cars on CZcams . You are brillant. Hope to see many more of your reviews and perhaps your own tv program!
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, Toyota keep staying true to thier blueprint.
Toyota HIPS😭😭😭I’ve never felt so at home watching a CZcams video
My boss drives a 2016 2.8GD6 Double Cab, mileage 590 000kms....still in showroom condition
Nailed it, my Grandfather's hilux of 1993 is still driving... I am one year older than that Bakkie 😊

This is only for Toyota enthusiasts who don't want their vehicles being recalled after a few months from purchase
1 million rand for a car with an interior like that. 🙃
I like the Raptor more but, I'd choose this Toyota hilux since id be looking at keeping it for quite a long time. I drove a normal Toyota hilux gr with 150kw and being a BMW owner which will most of the time be just cruising at Toyota hilux'es top speed as if its just following a funerals convoy,i felt like its power is enough for what it is and i don't really need my BMW's 235kms/h limited speed on my 520d even though when the BMW demon poseses me id feel like clocking that 260kms/h 😅 Metro if you're here this is just a joke i dont mean it.
Ford Ranger Wildtrak X please. This is a brand new very old bakkie.
Nice review, Jacob. I enjoyed it 🎉
I'd even take the single turbo Ranger XLT over this and thats R650k. Better looking, better interior, better tech, better fuel consumption.
Raptor rules.
Just the same old Hilux with GR stickers.
Didn't watch the video, did you?
Yes i did watch the video, why
We have a 2013 D4D fortuner at home from brand new with only 50k on the clock , to this day. , we’ve never had to pay for service at Toyota. They cover it for free ❤️👍
Wish they can make the next generation hilux bigger same size as toyota tacoma
isnt tacoma same size as hilux? isnt the tundra the bigger one
There is no way I can give up my Ford Thunder for that…I would feel very downgraded sitting in that interior
Don't worry you will be forced to change soon when the Ford turbo dies or something 😂😂😂
@@kgopotsomashile9851 you reckon?Don’t get me worried! I’m sitting at 69 000km now and the thing is still just fine!
If I'm doing long hauls (Cape to Cairo) Toyota Hilux hands down, spare parts are everywhere. Daily driver in SA boarders then I want nice interior to sit in so that's a Ford, VW. Toyota Hilux is far too old and outdated, sure the exterior gets a few tiny updates but as the owner I want to see the improvements to the interior where you spend the majority of your time. Yeah it's going to last decades and would like to have something that's not already decades old. The Toyota Hilux interior is in need of a Major Update!
Truth be said. It's not just a legend its forever....
Thank you for the review. However, I noticed some inaccuracies in your explanation of the shocks. It’s important to clarify that the previous generation's dual damper setup refers to a twin-tube shock design, whereas the new GR model features a monotube construction. This distinction relates to the actual shock design and construction.
Additionally, I'd like to point out some concerns regarding the reliability and longevity of the new 2.8 Hilux. We've been running both the GR and Rogue models in New Zealand for over a year now, and there have been several reports of timing chain issues.
Lastly, it’s worth considering that while Toyota is marketing this vehicle, it competes in a segment with other options that, in my opinion, offer better value for the money in terms of features and technology.
This or Wildtrack? Definetiley Wildtrack, no way I would choose i4 vs V6 with permanet AWD as part of package.
"Reliability", "No frills" , "Just simple", "If it's not broken, then why fix it"
When you hear those excuses my friend, just know that you are faced with a very cheap built piece of automobile that has no soul. Built by people who are so confident in a brand, they have actually stopped innovating and also stopped giving s*** about their customers. But the prices are very modern and upto today's standards.
Imagine paying a mill for an infotainment screen like that 😭😭
I choose raptor because I love the v6 noise!!!
is this the new generation or the face-lift?
the only thing toyota bakkie is left with is reliability when coming to competition
Ranger all day every day 👌
Why didn't Toyota give that beast an upgraded version of the 4.0L V6?
It’s seems like a no brainer, why didn’t they 🤔
Nice review. I love the outside look of it, and the colour🤝🏿
I'll rather have a first gen Raptor and save R400 000. Should be able to drive it longer as the Hilux will be stolen before year end.
Isuzu 3.0 Lse dmax for 860k is far better then that Toyota Gr sport
What's the point if it'll just get stolen?
Raptor still winning
best bakkie????? RAPTOR
The next one should be the Hilux GR (not sport), and slot in that 3.3D V6 or 3.5T V6 from the LC300 and get those Fox shocks....maybe then, we can start taking on the menacing Raptor. I love Toyota's approach though. If you are gonna reinvent the wheel, make it rounder...
Raptor for two, please.
Ranger raptor V6 power , hilux is just live on the pass.
Is it true that Hilux doesn’t have balance ? I hear people saying that whenever I say I wanna trade in my fire ranger for Hilux .
Haha you're even comparing it with Wildtrak😂😂. You know it won't match up with the Raptor
This is not even close😂😂😂😂...Raptor will own this segment like vclass, golfr respectively
Haha, prepare for some nice deals on 2nd hand bakkies. The rich boys are going shopping.🤠
I wonder how long it’ll take for that engine to be placed in the new prado?
Probably never. Ask the terrorists
Nahhh, Ranger my man.
Exterior and Interior design. Ford beats them all. Hell even VW is selling an Amarok Ranger now.
Toyota clearly needs to step up.
Can you get GR HILUX with the Toyota 4.0 V6 petrol ?
Raptor rules guys...
let the sales do the talking lol
I have noticed that Ciro did the script for this video. Unfortunately it still isn’t the same. This presenter doesn’t cut it. There goes my subscription. I was a subscriber from the beginning of the channel. Let’s see the longevity of the new target market for the channel.
Just say Black People. If you're going to take the time write such things then you may as well go all the way. You don't like Black people presenting on a channel that you feel belongs to white people.
How much did they pay you?
lol bra - SAs best bakkie is the Raptor - Lol this cant even take the wildtrack hahahah
Not the best bakkie just a fan favorite
Underpowered compared to the Raptor
No major interior update also the exterior
The car security sucks too!!
This is not a racing car, why would you need more than 150kW in a bakkie?
@@BongelaMnguni Having more than 150 kW in a bakkie enhances its performance and utility. It improves towing capacity, load carrying, and off-roading capabilities, making it easier to handle heavy loads and tough terrains. On the highway, better acceleration ensures safer merging and overtaking. For those who enjoy a dynamic driving style and often hit the gas, the extra power provides a more responsive and exhilarating ride. Look at Ford Ranger Raptor
Mholo Mhlekazi as for the looks of this bskkie😅😅😅.
Nhaaa
The Wildtrek is the boss especially with 3.0 V6 engine worth exploring
Just buy a Ford Raptor, Toyota is taking us for a poes now
It's a good looking vehicle. At 07:50 the question is, will it last you as long. The answer is yes, they are reliable. If you asked would you own it very long, the answer would be no. They are going to steal it. But your multiple notes basically sum up this vehicle, from the underpowered engine to the dated interior to the limited technology: "No Thrills, No Fuss"
Living in South Africa sucks! The next car I wanted to buy for my business is hilux long base, but I decided to go with Isuzu because of the crime rate here. I love Hilux so much but I just can't risk owning it
...Yes it is, next question please
I miss when Ciro was the only one doing reviews.
Why?
Where is Ciro????
Just one question to which bakkie does all other bakkie compare with?
The KING, the LEGEND. The ONE and ONLY..
You said it, “SIMPLE” if you can keep it for long enough…
still got that tupperware from 2010. Toyota is using the Apple method, change nothing and increase the price
He's great!
Love It.
Lem me balance you here! Raptor competes with Land cruiser both V8 engines
HILUX GR competes with Wildtrak V6 or Tremor
Then legend 50 competes with 2L bi turbon Wildtrak and both 150kw
Is this a 4 x 4?????
Yess
If its so reliable why is Toyota only giving a 3 year 90000km maintenance plan? Toyota is telling you they can only gaurantee 90000km.....time to believe them😂😂😂😂😂
I wonder if you are aware that ford bakkies do not even come with a maintenance plan. Imagine paying 1.2m for a car without a maintenance plan.😅
@@hattymogano9281I wonder whether you are educated, perhaps you should read the ford maintenance offer again. This time slowly, with the help of a friend. One who didn't get 30% in matric😂😂😂😂 It is 4years/120000km💪
@@hattymogano9281 Read it again, this time slowly. Its 4 years/120000km 💪😜😂
I’m here for the comments 🍿🥤:
Ranger vs Hilux, let’s go!⚔️
Pirates vs chiefs 😂😂thats ford and toyota always bashing each other
1Raptor will waist this 4 cylinder
2Raptor wil drive way more comfortable
3Raptor is safer
4Raptor is technically bettery in every aspect
5Raptor actually has a nice interior
6Raptor has sound has life has a personality compared to a boosted 4 cylinder.
5Raptor is litterally Race ready
6Raptor actually has power compared to this
Will never in my life choose this over a Raptor.
Enjoy your boring miles. I'm going for smiles per liter and not kilometers per liter!
I’ll come tow you in my Hilux 😂
Can they do something about anti theft😮😢
Raptor rules… but doesn’t last
Isuzu if you take car of it it will love you back forever
For no frills no fuss just get the raider spec, thats the best if you need a true bakkie that you can also use as a daily...legend/RS and GR are not legit "sporty" bakkies, but i guess they're there to keep customers from buying from their competitors
@13:48 "...and that's where my money is...".
Is it Jacob?
Really?!?
I'd wager your money is still safely nestled in the bank...
Prove me wrong...😂
You’re better off just getting the normal Hilux. Toyota is honestly just being lazy at this point cause paying over R1m & getting only 15kw more is a joke. You’re better off just going for the Raptor at this price point. But knowing South Africans they’ll still buy it🤡
Wildtrak v6 all day
It need a petrol and manual model and a hybrid model
But also BMW are catching with this reliability thing 🤫🤫🤫🤫
As a die heart Toyoyta fan I just dont get this. Power is not impressive, interior looks tacky and wider wheel arches makes it harder to park with no space benefit on the inside.
No Bakkie is worth risking your life with hijacking 😅
12:32 😭😂😂😂😂
That interior needs to change
If only they made a manual
Lead the way
The Raptor (and regular Rangers) outperforms this glorified tractor in pretty much every single metric. "Reliability" is not an excuse for making an outdated, cheap interior finished, underperforming powered and dinosauric 5 speed automatic slush box with the 6th gear acting like an overdrive, BAKKIE, more expensive than brand-new ones which are better in every way.
There are only two bakkies in the business, Toyota and Isuzu, anything and everything else is mediocre, yes, including the Ford..
Is this car powerful than Ford ranger wildtrack v6?
no, its far slower
Toyota is lazy if they upped the transmission it would rock . But toyota unlike ford do make them reliable. Ford make em fun but definitely no longevity or reliability.
@@saddammalima8458 thats just not true though
@@shasha023 what is not true ?
@@saddammalima8458 i have seen a lot of those 10 speeds go far beyond 500km+
Why don't you guy's review vehicle's we would like to know more about? Hilux is no more the "Albany" of bakkies
Alcantara seats for offroader??nooo
Shame to all these ford lovers, its ok maybe one day they will grow up and realize that toyota and isuzu is the best bakkies out there.
If it aren't broke, don't fix it. Ask blackberry and nokia how that mentally worked out for them. That bakkie is boring compared to its rivals.
Its a 4 cylinder..king of what exactly..more stickets..and tin
Toyota lost an opportunity to manifest they are rulers in this space. They lost my heart on this one.
My gwm has done 635000km
It looks like you selling the car trying to convince viewers to choose Toyota and not a review
Haha facts
No
Toyota mileage is not accurate 😅the speedo shows you doing 180km per hour but the GPS shows 169km per hour 😂😂
If you want no fuss, no thrills go for the million rand car😂
Toyota Hilux GR Sport is an overated joke as it doesn't compare to the Ford Ranger Raptor which is my choice
How much did Toyota pay for this review?
Toyota knows what must do to Bits raptor, Hilux won all this years they will do it.
