    Thank you so much for posting this video, and the trill chart! At first, I thought that trilling was "butterfly" tounging, or moving your jaw slightly.... Now I can practice my trills in my music :D
    Also... That alternate fingering chart really helped me out! Trilling from A natural to B natural is that much easier now

      Cidney McQuade Hi Cidney. These fingerings are really helpful to know. Usually if something is really hard to play, there is an easier alternative.

      Trills are often not explained well. Once you know how to do them, they are usually not too hard to play.

  • @ClarinetMentors

    Hi Andrea - you are observant! Capriccio is written for A clarinet, rather than Bb, so I switched over since my fingers are accustomed to that. Although the keys may look different (because the Leblanc Symphonie has two extra keys), for the most part it really is identical to the regular system that most of us have. For these trills, it would've been the same on Bb, it just feels "odd" to me since I have programmed this piece into my A clarinet memory. - Michelle

    Hi Michelle
    I was wondering if you knew of any alternate fingerings from a middle A to a C#? Nobody I know seems to be able to figure it out, and much like A to B it requires going from one figure to 8. Can you help?

    This video was really helpful thank you!! 😊 I was just wondering how to tongue a trill on the clarinet?
    Thanks again 😁

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 8 lety

      Trills are meant to be slurred. You can tongue the first note, but then the rapid finger movement is always done as a slur. In most cases, our fingers go faster than we would be able to tongue.

  • @ClarinetMentors
    @ClarinetMentors  Před 11 lety +1

    I am guessing that maruja meant the A - B in the middle of the staff. Usually from low E to Bb throat tone is chalimeau, and B in the middle of the staff to high C above the staff is clarion. "Middle" is not a technical term, but usually means notes in them middle of the staff.

    Thanks for another wonderful lesson! I have a question about tremolos, (which Chris C brought up below): in the 2nd clarinet part of "The Lark Ascending" there are some horrific ones, which cross the bridge. The worst is throat Bb to D, and another is Ab to C which just slightly less frustrating. Are there any alternate fingerings for these, or do we just have to do as best we can minimizing hand movement (and hope not to squeak too much!)

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 7 lety

      Sometimes, there is no elegant fingering solution, and you just need to be discreet and hope that the other clarinet parts create the effect that the composer wanted! Luckily this is rare, since usually a composer will know what doesn't work, or a good editor will catch it. You could also see if going down the octave still seems to fit the texture that the composer was aiming for.

    Thank you for that! I have a problem with a little trill in Summer by Reade (Victorian Kitchen Garden) where you have to go from middle register a to b (several times) and then to c. I have done this every which way and still get a bump. I have ended up by using the trill key and then going down to right hand c. This still produced a bump. Do you hav e any suggestions? It sounds so smooth on the CD..
    Many thanks in advance...

    Hi Michelle,
    is there a technical reason for your instrument change to (it seems) a reform bohem for for the Rimskij-Korsakov's "Capriccio Spagnolo" excerpt ?
    Your sound is beautiful as usual, but I fear that for some kind of passages a common boehm system instrument could more difficult than with a reform boehm.
    thank you !

    Do you still need to sharp if the song have one sharp? (For the song note)

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 5 lety +1

      You follow the key signature so if the note the trill is on (or the one above it that you are trilling to) would be sharp in the key signature, then make it sharp in the trill.

    what is a tremolo? on this piece I found there are 3 lines between a E and G and I don't know what to do.

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 8 lety

      A tremolo (which is kind of a carry over from something that string instruments do more easily than woodwinds) is like a trill between the two written notes. In this case, you would slur rapidly between and E and a G for the duration of the note length. It is like a trill, but usually the fingering is harder. Luckily, E to G is not too bad. You just need to coordinate your fingers to move together.

    I personally find it easier not to use the trill key but to already play the A with nearly all the fingers down but your left thumb and index finger (of course the index finger is pushing the A-key, but not covering the hole underneath). Left pinky is on C, right one on B. So you only have to move your left thumb and index finger a little bit downwards to "trill" from A to B. And as your left pinky ist already on its place, you only have to lift the right pinky for the following C.

      +Mootlunk Fingerings are the same on all three, so they usually work on all clarinets.

    how would you trill a high Bb to a high C

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 9 lety

      That would be the same as a low Eb to an F. Thumb (and register key if up high), first two left hand fingers, and then the Eb/Bb key that is right under the second finger on your left hand for the Eb/Bb. Add the two right hand side trill keys (the lowest ones) and you should get a whole tone trill. I hope that helps.

  • @maruja0030

    Middle register for me - middle C up to and including throat note C. I agree it is not technical!

  • @ClarinetMentors
    @ClarinetMentors  Před 11 lety

    That is a hard finger combination, for sure. I agree with you on using the side trill keys. You might try the left hand C and have it already pressed down during the trill. That way you just have the three RH holes to cover. I would do it in front of a mirror, always trying to move gently (with no finger slapping) and keep my RH as close to the holes as possible while the trill is going on. Perhaps adding a grace note C out of the trill and before the landing C will give you some wiggle room.

  • @eatyourvegitablespt.262

    How would you trill a high a flat to a high b flat? God I hope you see this soon.

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 5 lety

      Hi - I may have missed your deadline on this, but lifting your top finger on the left hand just a little bit can give you a good trill. It is volatile, so you have to hover really close to the hole and move quickly.

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 6 lety +1

      Those are mechanisms to allow our 10 fingers to cover over 20 holes to change notes. It looks more complicated than it is.
