  • Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.learnclarinetnow.com) presents a video to help you improve your clarinet tone. The main part of the video presents an exercise that you can do at home to improve tone. This is explained starting at 1'27", and is illustrated at 9'29". At 14'07" a brief discussion on how mouthpieces, and clarinets affect tone may help you find better gear. At 17'02", there are some reminders of good embouchure and posture habits to help your tone.

      Schönes WE - beste Grüße
      Robert

    Hi, Michelle. I play on a Gennusa Excellente mouthpiece GE, which is the close opening version. It costs about $125 and has improved my "projected" playing of concert solos, where I have to be heard against the background of the orchestra in a large concert hall--not miked. Colleagues noticed the difference right away and have told me that my playing has matured. No problem with soft playing. Your exercises are excellent.

    Thanks Michelle for that very useful advice. It's like having a second teacher!
    I recently bought a Vandoren B40 mouthpiece for my student grade clarinet, and it's made a huge difference to the tone. However, it now plays quite sharp, and I always have to pull the barrel out at least 1/8" when I'm accompanied or in an orchestra. It's the same whatever reed type or strength I use. I wonder, do I just live with that?

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 9 lety

      Clare Laurence That sharpness is probably partly caused by the mouthpiece. Most people will find a longer barrel to help tune down. That may be worth looking at. If you can control it by pulling your current barrel, that may be workable. It is nice to have the better tone that a good mouthpiece provides.

    hello michelle i have a tricky question to ask you i am in the uk and have just taken my grade 3 exam and all your videos and encouraging tips have made all the difference. how can i make sure that my teacher is less negative and adopt a true teaching approach (ie show me how to do it right rather than telling me what is wrong all the time !).

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 8 lety

      +Martine Guest Every teacher has a different style. If your teacher mentions something that you are not doing correctly, you can just ask how you can improve/do it differently. If they are not able to explain it well to you, you may want to find a different teacher who fits your learning style better.

  • @poulerikmller2781
    @poulerikmller2781 Před 9 lety

    I`m greatly confused. I have been a singer in different choirs for decades. Had 4 different singing teachers - opera- who have taught me how to breathe.
    I have been taught to breathe in, letting my stomach fall out so I looked like a barrel and then slowly let the air stream out while singing - consequently becoming slimmer. What you have said is what I did when I started years ago. Actually quite the opposite.
    Please explain. I practice the clarinet in my spare time.

      Clarinet Mentors (Michelle Anderson) Am I mistaken, or does it have an extra lever for the left pinky to play the Ab/Eb? I've rarely seen a clarinet with the extra lever (and never tried one); how useful do you find it? And will most new clarinets have these as a standard feature?

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 9 lety +1

      You are correct that there is left pinky Ab/Eb key. This is becoming more standard on higher end clarinets. At times, this is really useful. I do have years of training without it, so most of the time I don't use it. However, there are definitely passages where I would have needed to do some pretty fancy pinky gymnastics that I can now avoid, and I do appreciate that!

    I'm considering getting one with a brushed resin body - would I get a decent tone out of that material?

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 9 lety

      Abbey Hewitt I believe that will be a plastic clarinet with a finish that makes it look more like wood. The quality of sound may depend somewhat on the brand. In general, plastic clarinets make good beginner to intermediate instruments, and can sound good, especially with an upgrade of a professional mouthpiece. There is a limit to how warm plastic can sound however. Most step-up instruments are made of wood for the warmer tone quality.

    Michelle,
    I am confused with the breathing exercise to improve tone. All my training in athletics, choral singing, etc. indicates that diaphragm breathing requires moving the stomach out so that the diaphragm is allowed move down...thus allowing in more air. Pushing the stomach out seems contradictory to body normal breathing system.

    • @ClarinetMentors
      @ClarinetMentors  Před 9 lety

      Ed Schmidt Hi Ed, I think this exercise is confusing from a logical point of view. I don't know why it works so well when this seems backwards, but in my experience, it usually works very well on the clarinet. I recommend you try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, you already have some good training to pull upon using other methods.

    • @kyotosal
      @kyotosal Před 9 lety +2

      Ed Schmidt Hi Ed. It's the diaphragm moving down which pushes the abdomen out. Michelle is just saying to move the diaphragm down quickly in order to help strengthen the diaphragmatic muscles. As a Respiratory Therapist, I teach diaphragmatic breathing to patients all the time.
