Rocket Mass Heater | Building The Fuel Feed and Heat Riser
Vložit
- čas přidán 12. 08. 2024
- We've begun building a rocket mass heater for the most efficient off-grid heat possible. This will be a great addition to our self build earthbag home in the desert.

We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

Sorry we've been gone. It's good to be back. Thanks for watching y'all!
The most common mistake people make with a rocket mass heater is they fail to create a draft from the outside of their structure, into the heater. Without that the combustion will suck cold air in from every nook and cranny it can in your home.
Use car 🚘 💡 Lights for the home
I would suggest you go to a local dentist school for a checkup and the fees are reasonable
please don't stress. you tube can be a trap. I for one will still watch even if you posted once a month.
Just found your chan😊I really think your dog will love that heater better than the bed🙃
The day that we've all been waiting for!!!!!
Day 1 the next build
Thank you for including us in this journey
I love your stories working and making your homestead. I would love to see more on your garden and how you built your shelter and watering system.
Awe, so glad you are feeling better! Love you both, such good people! 👍🏼👍🏽♥️
Glad you are feeling better Jess, seems like Jim has been looking after you 😊🇬🇧
So glad Jess is feeling better.
Rocket mass heaters are a smart way to go, for sure. But when are y'all going to cob the walls?
So happy Jess is better! Can't wait to see the heater finished!
Both of you are Awesome 🥰 I love how dedicated you are and how loving you are to each other and your pets❤️🥰❤️
Your a genius Jim great idea putting sides on your trailer. Glad to hear Jessica is feeling better. The rocket mass heater is looking good. Thanks' for the video,
Heater looks like it will be real close to that wire run. Might want to think about that some more.
I've been watching this channel for quite sometime and I'm not trying to be negative. You guys have come a long way, taking steps forward and back. I feel like there is no organization and this build is all over the place. I've never built anything like this but from what I can see the bags inside are falling apart and the integrity of the build will be also. Just a friendly suggestion, maybe make a priority list of things that must be done before moving on to new projects. I know the mass heater is a great idea but that energy could have been used to finish the walls inside. All I'm saying is that I'm a bit like you mike, Im all over the place. I had to learn to finish what you started before moving on and creating a hand written list got me back on track. Keep warm there are some really cold storms headed your way out of California and best wishes for you and Jess.
It does seem to be loosing focus. Jess, has such patience, don't feel all that dust is healthy environment .
its jim not mike! haha but your right they ned a list maybe
I Love ya'll. ❤
I love you guys - God Bless
Looking forward to seeing the finished product
Good to see Jess feeling better.
Please go look at “My Little Homestead” on CZcams this family is wonderful and from what I see, you and Jess aren’t ready to put in the stove yet because your home still needs a lot of work before you begin putting in the stove and Ms the placement of it is all wrong and maybe even dangerous for you and your dogs. Plus you all may want to add or connect a warm soft to the heater and your walls should be done as well as your floors before any heater goes in. Please check out the show and the things they did. I wish you both well and good luck with your heater.
We've done quite a bit of research. Thank you
Glad you are back.
Glad you are back. Missed you guys. The heater looks awesome!
I'd say the mixer has been a really good buy. You have used it a ton
Keep on chugging Jess and Jim!
The heater will be nice for you both in the winter. Glad you are feeling better Jess.
Glad you are feeling better. God bless y'all
Nice job, lots of work. God Bless you both and Prayers for Jess's recovery.
Excited to see y’all do the walls on the inside and make it look like a real home love the house
Go, brother!
Welcome back. Glad to see that you are well. Please install a carbon monoxide detector down below in your bedroom area. It is a deadly gas, heavier than air, it tends to settle in basements. Please stay safe out there. Peace
So glad you are feeling better. I make bottle bricks too.
Keep an eye on that hole, you do not need a dry socket! God bless! Heal swiftly & be well.
Great to see your up and running revitalized. Love how your recycling plastic.great ideas to utilize so proud of you
nice to have you back :)
Enjoyed the guitar soundtrack. Thanks!
Looking so awesome you guys!! It has been chilly here !! That stove is an awesome idea🙌💯
Now that's an exciting start to warmer winter next year.
Soooo glad Jess is feeling better... we all know you guys will be moving that heater, as it way to close to the wall. Keep on lovely people!
Jess I hope you start carrying and gets comfortable with it as well the only annoyance with it is forgetting when going to sit down . But I carry a revolver so it sits lower . If Jim happens to be gone and a group walks up the dogs will only be so much of a deterant .We have had 2 groups walk up and they were not afraid of my 4 large dogs .I carry because of the Javalina they are some ill tempered creatures when suprised
Jess it’s so nice to know that you are feeling better now and it’s good to see you smile again. Exciting to see the heater going together also. Both of you take care, blessings to you both ❤️😃💙💜
🐾🐾 😎 Shirl K - Texas
Glad to see you're feeling better
Its too close to the wall. Better if its moved out a little way. Otherwise, looking great! Solid build!!
I was suffering from no GDP, but, I got my fix. ...glad all is well. ...👍
Nothing quite like tooth pain. Glad you're doing well.🤗🤗
Thank you. That's a great trailer for sure.
Jessica& Jim; I had my wisdom teeth removed back in the 1970's, In the USA, Norman, Oklahoma, by a Dental Surgeon. A large, strong man, over 6 ft. tall. He was able to just pull 2 teeth out at a time. It took some time for the holes to heal, & I have had no trouble since. Glad to see you were able to save money by having the Surgery done in Mexico; I have heard this done for other operations. I look forward to see your recovery, & your additions to the artistry of your homestead/Project. Peace, Long Life, & Health to all.
My back tooth feels out I was glad it did the pain went away
Both of you work together so well.
Glad your getting better jess! Hope the stove/heater works great in there. I've seen several different designs they are all pretty neat & relatively easy designs. 👍🤗❤
I hope that you are all okay. You don't seem to have a good supply of anything to burn. Consider building heat grabbers to better take advantage of the sun. Good Luck, Rick
Glad you 2 are on the mend.
Rm will be awsome. So many uses
Does anyone else have the sound cut out for a few seconds while he's talking?
I was wondering that too. I came here to see if anyone else reported it.
Yes
Glad you feeling better. Love to see the build. That is new to me so something to learn. Thanks🥰
I've seen small heaters but not one on this scale. It will be interesting to see if it works for you. More power to you. So far looking good.
I think I saw spider eggs on those mattresses, you might want to handle that now before they hatch.❤❤❤❤
Bottle bricks are a fabulous idea, thanks!
If you place your mr. Heater in the basement and heat that area first you can balance the temperature better in the dome.
Great job on the trailer sure would like to be there to help you guys it would be a lot of fun even though I m an old man, love watching you guys glad Jess is feeling better
It's amazing you're already at the heater building phase!
Where you going to put in a bubbler so some of your water would not freeze at the drains be blessed great to see you,re both well warm wishes peace
That is awesome! 🎉
I know ZERO about rocket stoves. Super interested and looking forward to learning. My friend built a 6000 square-foot house yes 6000 ft.². They built this house so airtight the heat the entire house with one small radiator style heater or their small wood stove. This house is in the mountains, and they’ve only had to use the heat two weeks out of the winter. it gets below zero here. The bottle bricks are also very interesting we throw away an awful lot of stuff, all this plastic is a big big disaster. Even when you have a good recycling program like we do, a lot of the products can’t be recycled. I think half of my neighbors porch is in my front yard due to the winds here too lol
I sure hope you’re going to explain the concept of the heater in later videos. Is this a way to keep the warm air in continuous circulation?
I hope you're feeling better.
Gald your back
I'm so glad your not in pain I know it can be so hard on you and your husband. Enjoy watching your videos God bless
I'll join the crowd and give my best to Jessica. Having gone through an impacted wisdom tooth way back in my younger years, I know the pain and eventual relief once the 'cure' was done. The rocket-mass heater is a great idea, but I have serious questions about its location right near the staircase, the weight of it versus on the floor below, and the clearance for the chimney. I thought there had to be considerable "piping" in a sort of cob 'sofa' --- and there just ain't 'nuff room, partner.
I've already been through all this. The placement is fine.
you gys gotta get those dogs getting along
very well filmed and so interesting!!!
The rocket stove will make a great difference
If you do wind up deciding to move it, I'd like to make the argument for putting it in the bedroom. Heat rises, and while your bedroom is well insulated, it's probably harder to get the heat downstairs than moving it upwards when needed. If the heater is in the bedroom, you have the thermal heat sink near where you sleep, and the ability to feed it more fuel in the middle of the night. Potentially, the heater would act as an indirect light source/night light, too. But then again, maybe those were all things you already considered and still opted for the ground level. Just having some fun analyzing the logistics, you know? 🙂
Jess get well ! You are a wonderful couple ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awesome job 👍👍👍
Good Morning.....
allo guys miss you
Nice to know that Jess is feeling better. Any concerns over the weight of the RMS on the floor? I’m looking forward to building a RMS in my place in the future. Good job guys.
Hey Michael! It's over the bags, so no worries
😊Keep on, Keeping on🤗
When are you all gone to put up the wall and floor. That did to be done. Have a Bless Day..
12v Car 🚘 💡 lights 💡could be used in the morning for lighting in the home
If it gets hot will it not melt the bags??
It doesn't matter if the bags melt.
that doesn't look like any sand we ever seen good luck god bless
Good to see you back on again. Re the water being frozen either in the pipes or tanks you can get 12v trace heating that can be controlled by a 12v thermostatic controller which should overcome that problem. I have it working well for my water tanks and pipes and lithium batteries.
We will wait as long as it takes for y'all. Don't overdo it and get plenty of rest.
They have mattress space bags you can put your mattress in and vacuum all the air out and force it to fit through that hole
I’m happy to say we fold fitted sheets the same way! 😂🤦🏽♀️😂
Japanese half is good at hiding pain…humility. My wife is Japanese and she has a pain tolerance that is very high. Docs don’t believe when she says it’s a 9 on the 1 to 10 scale.
Having a box for the trailer is a good idea for carrying lighter loads and like animals and such. Just remember wood is heavy, large tarp used as a liner would be better. especially for those that have a weight limit they need to stay under.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, when are you going to coffer the whole inside the dome?
You may want to burn the paint off that 55 gallon drum outside before you incorporate it into the heater indoors. The smell is awful if you don't and will cause problems indoors the first time you use it. The inside of the drum is lined/laced with vinyl chloride when it's original use is for petroleum products.
Good job guys!!!
I’ve been watching you guys for some time now! You two are by far my fave peeps to watch😊 me and my better half just go our hands on 80 acres outside of St. Johns AZ. We have a plan to do exactly what you guys are doing! Not sure how far we will be from ya, but we’d love to meet y’all one day and mb get some pointers/advice. Much love to you both!
That is so clever making bottle bricks. Some earth houses use old tires for the walls.
Awesome project!
Bottle bricks-cool idea!
I had my teeth fixed in Juarez Mexico saved a lot. I really think the fireplace would be more useful from downstairs. I never built a fireplace before but if you are stacking bricks I would go to CZcams to see how others do it.
We're the ones doing it on CZcams. 😉
@@ourselfreliantlife you have no idea what you are doing winging it all the way
D SC gave you a suggestion and you reply with ''We're the ones doing it on CZcams'' how haughty can you be
@slicgonochickhunt4722 I'm not "winging" anything. I've done a lot of research before starting this.
@@ourselfreliantlife I only answered your Query at the end when you asked for suggestions about how Your viewers might do it. If you don't want suggestions don't ask.
@omahanb1 we always appreciate suggestions, but also, we've done quite a bit of research before starting.
Nice pistol little man
Use wrench straps around the mattress which will fold it smaller and you can hold the straps to get it down stairs easier
2:16 Anyone who says there is another way than that to fold a fitted sheet, lies.
😂
Hang the mattress from the ceiling up out-of-the-way temporarily
Happy to see you're all feeling better. What's the purpose of perlite in the base? Doesn't perlite expand when it gets hot?
It's an insulation
Move it late,r let it work.its coooool
Use a jack on the inside to pop the dent
A tarp would work for keeping the sand in as well
