After editing videos for over a decade I know having a fast hard disk is essential in getting a smooth workflow.
With the newer Solid State Drives (SSD) I feel my video editing is smoother than with conventional HDD drives. But maybe adding 16Gb more RAM to my computer will be better? Let's find out what is better: External SSD vs HDD vs RAM

If you still have problems editing your videos even after upgrading to an SSD, check out this video 👉 czcams.com/video/Acrm-wQjoaU/video.html
green screen background looks awesome bro.
lighting is perfect
I love the background song !!! Why am I dancing watching a tech channel!? hahaha!
Man, I got a 64gb RAM on my PC and Premiere Pro crashes like I still have only 4gb DDR2 on it.
You are correct, SSD will be more beneficial, I am planning to get a new GEN4 NVME hopefully next month.
BTW, You really put a lot of effort here! Congrats! You will get that Silver Play Button Sooon!
Thanks, Rico! Fingers crossed for a silver play button ;)
Loved the content, and the overall vibe! Very Cyberpunky :D Nicely done!!
Thanks man! 🙏🏼😁
you have amazing editing skills, definitely gave me some inspiration:) keep up the videos!
Thanks 🙏🏼😊
Thanks for the video Paul. Saw you did some cool key frame effects that inspired me. I have ungraded to a Cannon Vixia 4k camera. But the bummer is in editing now in 4k the timeline is slower now. I have upgraded my ram and saw no difference. My worry is that the USB 3.1 drive may lag. I have a HDD it is still laggy on the timeline. I use Kdenlive and am using a i7 over 5 years old! You got a new subscriber here keep up the good work.
dude your editing and color is great. well done
Thank man!
I learned so much watching this vid even things that I wasn’t even looking for, thank you ✨
This was such a helpful video, thank you!!
Glad you found it helpful!
I know this video is a little old but I stumbled across it. Aside from ram and ssd the factor that is affecting your playback, rendering, etc is your gpu. You have a 4gb Radeon in there which isn’t terrible, but I’d def recommend at least an RX 580 or more for editing 4k smoothly. Thanks for the video!
intro so sick, instantly subscribed
Thanks man! Great to have you here!
can u list where you got the denim tho 🔥🔥🔥
What do you think about 2000mb speed
7:01 we have the same iMac, almost: Graphics card 575 vs 570 , and 3.5ghz, and im running it with 64 RAM (also 500GB SSD) but I say all that to say I have no problem with playback in AE using heavy layers of rotobrush and animations. The issue I run into though is exporting anything over 2 minutes, so I have to work in small bits to compile a 6 minute video. Wish there were an easier way to key out a face as accurately as AE (I've done some in PP but the frame by frame tracking took forever to clean up because it didn't follow as well as the rotobrush in AE).
I was sent this vid by moderate millie to find out how an SSD speeds up the editing on my computer. But compared to using internal storage, is there actually a difference? And if your ram isnt high enough abd its lagging etc. Is an SSD going to actually help anything?
Does 1000mb/s or 2000 mb/s really matter?
I'm interested in the video you referenced at the end but I see no link to it.
Hey! Here's the link: czcams.com/video/Acrm-wQjoaU/video.html
I've just bought a LaCie Rugged Pro thunderbolt SSD for my 2018 Mac Mini, after upgrading the RAM to 32GB. I've tested the LaCie's speeds, and I'm getting over 2,600MB for read and write. I've now set up the Properties and Project Settings on Resolve to use the new SSD for render files and proxy files. I keep original media on a separate, slower Sandisk SSD (read & write speeds just over 1,000MB). The LaCie drive has been my best investment so far. Using thunderbolt you can achieve much higher speeds than USB-C. If you optimise the Properties and Project Settings, you can get on with your projects without even noticing the rendering that's going on in the background.
Hi, Your video was really put together well and loved the format, but I was wondering if you've had any experience with using continuity camera. I'm trying to determine if my continuity camera stopped working due to the slow speed of my external or it's software related. I can get it working in a new login account after everything loads in , but not in my regular account where I have many apps running at the same time. Should I assume that simply upgrading to an SSD, any SSD will do the trick or is there one that you can recommend? I would want at least a 2tb drive, but might only afford a 1tb. I am using an iMac i7 2017 64 gb ram OS Ventura Thanks in advance.
Hey! Glad you liked the video. Although I haven’t got experience using the continuity camera I assume it’s recording in h.264, which is not ideal when using a “normal” external hard disk. Upgrading to an SSD should help, but I can’t guarantee it. However, when im editing h.264 footage from a non SSD disk, it’s really choppy and if the clip is long it’s sometimes impossible to even open. After switching completely to SSDs I have no issues whatsoever. There should be links to good SSDs in the video description. Hope this helps ;)

Hey Paul,
Unfortunately I’m one of those guys who takes a long time to decide and then I have to have it! Unfortunately I couldn’t wait to give you the business. Sorry about that. I bought a My passport 2tb SSD high speed NVME 1050 Mob transfer locally and it still doesn’t work for some reason. I just loaded the OS, so there aren’t any other possible software conflicts, but I’m getting the same error “Lost connection to deskview” and the other software that I use it will give me the options, but a blank screen. I go back and forth with eternal boot ups. It’s funny because it did work. It was a surprise to me one day that I was doing something else with the camera and it activated all by itself. It appeared that it stopped after I did small upgrades to the MAC and my iPhone. I Iove the external thought. It is blazing fast, but until I figure this out I won’t be loading anything else in it other than Mac OS Ventura for troubleshooting, so I keep going back to the old, slow external, because I practically lived in it. Frustrating to say the least. I want and need to use it right away. Thanks so much! I’ll keep you posted.
I now have a Samsung T7 SSD and moved my photos/videos to it for editing. Whne I attempt to edit anything, it cannot be saved. A message pops up and says that action cannot be completed. Am I missing something? Is this only for storage?
i guess you are using an apple system...your T7 ssd is probably formatted with fat32 or NTFS. recommend you copy out the contents, format the T7 ssd using Ext Fat.
Im still looking up to what is a SDD
I need a ssd for 4K footage which one would you recommend please
Both links in the video description work great :)
Hello mate, thank you for this. Great vid. Do you have your editing software on ssd or on computer ?
It’s installed on the computer, as it should be ;)
@@PaulHeimlund cheers mate
Thank you! This helps. My WD passport broke down.. And I lose few videos that are ready to published... So sad... I decided to do my work on SSD, and store it into HDD once done, so I have two backup...
Hello i am quite interested in this strategy but i have some question. Because last year my computer crash and i lost all files from 2.5 years. So i want to understand the strategy you using . So does this mean that when you makling a video you dont save anything to your computer? and then every time you want to make a video you plug you ssd in? and then when you finish the video , you keep the project files on ssd but then the finished video on Hdd? What if you are not able to finish working on project 1 one day and have to keep insert external hard drive in and out day after day , sometimes i get a message when i try to eject drive and then im not able to . Can you explain your technique a bit mroe thanks
@@eeforest7122 Hi~ You are right. I am doing my editing using my external ssd (It's an internal SSD + outer enclosure), but I only plug in and out my SSD once a week as I didn't really move my laptop. I did not save anything in my laptop because my laptop is a combination of 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD. SSD is almost full of my software installation, and my HDD is quite slow when editing video. Initially I do my work using external HDD, but it broke down in a sudden due to the USB connection problem, not HDD problem... And I lost everything. So I bought an internal SSD + outer enclosure, and I use it as an external SSD, so if the USB connection got problem, I can buy a new enclosure and solve the problem. Editing using SSD is faster. After done, I save the final video into my internal HDD. The original mp4 from camera are still in my working SSD.
@@kaede_jingwhich internal ssd and enclosure you use?
@PaulHeimlund did you try your project running off your internal disk?
as you gonna get much better speeds there. im guessing you getting 1.5k max with those ssd's
Hey! I’ve been editing on the external Samsung T7 for about 6 months and it’s amazing! No dropped frames, fast render etc. So, haven’t needed the internal disk for a while ;)
you editing big projects ? without proxy ?@@PaulHeimlund and speeds on there were around 1000 or something yah ?
What's SDD???
Say it with me S S D
S D D! No! Wait…
😅😅😅😂😂😂❤
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Shocked rage face: she wants the ssd
S S D Drive
I have the same I Mac and I love it, But unfortunately it's starting to slow down. I going to hang on to this computer as long as I can lol then maybe jump to an iMac studio and display unless they come back with an all in one then that would be awesome. Great video sir very helpful.2024
Yeah, have stated having issues as well the last couple of months. Will try to wait until Apple's autumn release and get a Macbook Pro and use my iMac as an extra screen. It might die before..😅
You said many times SDD instead of SSD. WHAT AM I MISSING?
Hey good video, what camera are you using?
Hey thanks! I’m using a Panasonic Lumix GH6.
@@PaulHeimlund Thx you :)
more than halfway thru (6:24) and I'm still waiting to learn about video editing using the right external hard drive...
Start again!
If you're editing videos 10 hours a day, is it possible that the external HDD gets damaged because it's constantly spinning and heating up?
I don't have the budget to buy an SSD for now and I'm afraid that my external HDD might die on me.
10 hours ? I am editing daily but not 10 hours. Its been 4 years since i started editing now my hdd dying. So get an ssd if youre editing 10 hours a day.
wtf are you talking about? .... what? yes the HDD is going to fucking explode because its doing what its designed to do... Before SSD's were released just turning on a PC was risking life and limb.
@@CmdrTigerKing Yo chill.
for external ssd, you need a usb 3.0 port Paul... but if you play the same footage with an internal SSD, it will b buttery smooth with color grade... full disclosure... i was talking about PC... never used a mac, so don't know about that
Hey Arun! I tested it with the Thunderbolt port, which is 4x faster than usb 3.1 ;)
Maybe I’ll test my wife’s M1 MacBook Pro with internal ssd. Could be interesting…
Thanks for your feedback :)
@@PaulHeimlund aah ok... and also test it with this external SSD on it... then you can know the exact difference... try it with internal as well as with external on the same device
@@PaulHeimlund thunderbolt port will only give you speeds of USB 3.1 if using a USB 3.1 cable, you will need ssd with thunderbolt port and thunderbolt cable to get near 40Gbps speeds.
@@bjornarya That’s correct ;)
I have a question: I am planning on getting a mac studio and do not want to upgrade the storage from 512GB (costs too much). My plan is to get a high speed external SSD Drive. Is editing on an external SSD bad or should I invest in a high storage model to edit with the internal ssd?
Hey! Even if you get more internal storage it will eventually get full, and as you say it is very expensive. Getting yourself a fast external SSD will save you money and you won't notice any difference in speed when editing ;)
@@PaulHeimlund Thanks for the response! You helped me a lot :D
Which is the best and secure external SSD drive format for Mac and PC like exFAT, APFS because I heard that if we are using exFAT drive format the files are getting corrupted.
brother dont get any of those ssd's . get a nvme ssd and enclosure. it will be faster and cheaper ;) thank me later
That's my question too. Had two Lacie drive, formatted exFAT, go down this week! Some say format spinning drives HFS+, others say APFS. @@TheSpyCode
You should store file in multiple places coz i don’t trust those ssd’s they fail
I duplicate my files to Google drive
One useful hack for improving editing speed I found is to ditch the Mac and upgrade to a higher performance Windows machine.
Very basic info here.. Obviously hdd is much slower.. the real question is which ssd since transfer and write speeds differ a lot.
So true..
Waste of time
If you say SDD one more time 🥊😅😂
SDD 😝😝😝
this makes no sense. why do the SSDs in this video cost less than lacie HHDs and SSDs if they are slower?!
Great video and vibe. Looking forward to the content… one comment - don’t mickey mouse your music. It takes away from your info/content. Just my opinion, let it drop out for much of the piece… :)
