How I Make an Art Deco Fireplace / Fire Surround

- Today I'm making a bespoke art deco fire surround out of MDF for one of my lovely customers. This is completely custom made to fit their existing fireplace and also to account for the thickness of their current granite back mantel. The customer had a good idea of what they wanted so I came up with a design in SketchUp, built and finished the whole thing and then installed it at the customer's site.

I’ve just brought my first property and it’s an Art Deco property; I do really need this fireplace
This is without a doubt the best fireplace mantel build tutorial I've ever seen on CZcams. Great job!
One of the reasons I like watching (besides the great content!) is that you work in an efficient and safe manner. Using a dust mask, using push sticks with the table saw, all those little things get passed along to new viewers who will pick up those great habits. Great Job!
Smidge Does Stuff cheers Smidge! 👍 🛠
Amazing work! You brought that design to life very skillfully! Looking forward to the next video!!
That was excellent. I really admire the way you cut all those pieces and they went together perfectly. Brilliant!
Charles Arnold cheers Charles! 👊🛠
Great video, I’ll be doing something similar. Very clear ideas.
While I've never been a fan of mdf, that looks really good. Nice build too. Thank you for sharing.

Nice build as always Andy, just made one for my brother in law, quite enjoyable saved him a fortune as he only had a buy the wood so about £24.00 for 1 x 8' x 4' x 3/4" sheet of MDF and a fair amount of routing lol keep on posting mate, enjoyed your mail bag too from Garry in Barnsley
nicely done!

Cheers Ken! 👍🛠🍺
Fine job, good music (personal preference 😊) not too loud 👍, fits very good by the customers interior. Maybe some explaining about Flowatrol during these hot day's, you mentioned I briefly in the potcast
Rob en Henni on the list! Don't generally need it up here as it's not hot enough in my shop 😂👍
very nice job andy as usual
james o'connell cheers James! 👍
👍👍
what can you say but WOW
Cheers Colin! 👍
Hi, i have a electric mdf fireplace i bought from someone could i just paint over it with the dulux satin eggshell like you did in the video? And do i have to seal it with anything ? You did an amazing job xx
Cracking video, well done Andy. That was definitely 10 minutes well spent. From start to finish, excluding drying time, how long did this project take??
Gary Furness cheers - took about 2.5 days 👍
This is exactly what I would like to build. Is there any way you could share the sketch up for this?
Hey dude, love your work. Hoping for some advice, I'm using an MDF fire surround and have a log burning stove in place. I may just be worrying, but the insert of the firesurround gets quite hot when the stove is running. Will it be safe to use? I have seen others on instagram using the same surround and log burners so it should be OK. Just finding it hard to find some insight
That looks way better than the customer's pic. They must have been well chuffed. Very, very nice work, thanks.
(I'd love to give it a go if I could find out how to get a DIY ultra high gloss finish on MDF to which P Millard says "Send it out" - tchah!)
Thank you! High gloss is tricky. 👍😀
Brilliant !👌just a quick question , have you ever had any of your acrylic top coats go tacky to the touch after a period of time ?. Its happened to me on several occasions and from top brand paints .🤔
peter fido no - never had that problem! What brand and what primer? 👍
Done a great job of that Mate, but will the heat from the fire over a period of effect it in anyway do you think !!!.
Cheers! No - it's very common for fireplaces to be made from MDF / ply. 👍
What tips do you have for sanding right into the corners as the orbital obviously misses them ?
I have an attachment for my multi-tool that works really well for corners etc. 👍
That looks really sharp. Nice. Is there a reason you didn't caulk the seams around the wall?
eeguy77 I try not to caulk fireplaces unless the gaps are really bad as access is always handy - in the actual room the joins aren't noticeable. 👍🛠
Gosforth Handyman makes sense, thanks!
Nice work mate.
Just quick question, why don't you use your track saw to cut the 45 bevels?
It would be tricky with thin cuts like this as the track wouldn't fit on the cut side. Table saw is much quicker. 👍
I have done thin cuts on site like that, just pack with a piece the same thickness to fit the track on mate.
Cut the 45 to get two 45 cuts at once.
If cutting in workshop yes it makes sense.
Hey do you have plans for this? Some parts are confusing. When you build the layers are they different lengths? I’d really like to build this
Any chance you could do a video on your nail gun? What nails you use. which nails are best for which job. length of nails and their holding power compared to how thin they are. I notice you use it a lot. I have a Titan electric gun, which is ARSE, and I'm wondering if I should get an air nail gun.
On the list! Mostly 18ga 35mm for this. 👍
Have you tried the 45 miter lock router bit
Too much of a chew on for this project :-) 👍
I live not far from you. Just found you so I'm working my way through your videos! Where did you get your rafter square from?
Cool - Screwfix I think! 👍
No decorators caulk used? I made a fire surround from MDF a few years back, but I don't have all the mod con tools, so it was 95% MDF, 5% caulk......lol. You did a propa belta job there... :)
What you recommend paying for one these 50 inch w by 50 inch hieght
Lovely work Andy. Liked the installation details. I can see why you screwed the fireplace to the wall brackets; you really don't want a substantial piece of MDF furniture just clipped on or hung onto hidden fixings where it might get bumped lose.
tlangdon12 🛠👍🛠
May I ask 45 cut is really necessary on this case there is not molding details and Its gonna be paint also I'd sanded well and caulking so it is important and much do you charge for mantel like that
Pricing vid on Patreon. 👍 Good question on the 45's - might do a vid explaining that one.
Lovely job Andy. A lot of extra work involved to cut out having end grain on the MDF. With your expert painting skills can you not get the end grain not to show or is it just too time consuming (filling, sanding filling etc.)? Have a great weekend.
Steve James with all the angles sanding the end grain would be awkward so prefer the bevels on this 👍🛠
That took some head scratching.
Would have been tricky without SketchUp! 👍
Good vid sir. Maybe button fix it to the wall?
Cheers! Tricky as wall isn't particularly flat. 👍
Fantastic job do you sell a set of plans
Eddy Flynn I don't at the minute but on my to-do list 😀👍
Gosforth Handyman put my name on a set
You must have done this over the winter wearing that hat surely? Good work BTW
Shaun Sheppard ha yes, think it was early Spring - that's how far behind I am on editing 😂👍
How Do you get your table saw at a perfect 45 degree bevel? I can’t... could you make a video? Please😀
The 745 locks in at 45 no probs - full extent of tilt until it hits the stop and it's bang on. Failing that you'd need a digital angle thing. 👍
Gosforth Handyman.I have the same table saw. Unfortunatly mine is NOT bang on. Thank you for your time.
I can see that you are correctly wearing a respirator when sanding the MDF but how do you deal with the dust contamination in your workshop? It would be really easy to kick up settled dust and it takes minimal exposure to potentially lose decades from your life. Personally I avoid MDF all together as it is just too risky.
I have an air cleaner and air quality monitor - mask stays on until dust levels are safe. 👍
What would you charge to make this?
Andy, I am under the impression that your tracksaw can cut precise 45-degree bevels. Why didn't you utilize that capabililty?
Much, much quicker on the table saw. 👍
How come u don't do v joints to get a even better finish on the MDF joints ?
Do you mean a mitre lock joint on a router table? It would take longer and the final result would look exactly the same. 👍
No like doing a slight shanfer on the miters so the filler had more of a gap to go into. It's just a different methord of getting a smooth finish on MDF miter.
A painter once told me that paint retreats from sharp edges.
Erm, not really - if anything you get a build-up of paint on sharp edges that you have to 'lay off'. Possibly with older oil-based paints. 👍
Good to know. Sharp corners don't relay ... happen in my projects :D so I never had a chance to test it.
Didn't they want the gaps where it meets the walls filled Andy ?
No - access required. 👍
Would have caulked into wall 👍🏽
Customer requires access. 👍
