How I Make an Art Deco Fireplace / Fire Surround

  • Today I'm making a bespoke art deco fire surround out of MDF for one of my lovely customers. This is completely custom made to fit their existing fireplace and also to account for the thickness of their current granite back mantel. The customer had a good idea of what they wanted so I came up with a design in SketchUp, built and finished the whole thing and then installed it at the customer's site.

    One of the reasons I like watching (besides the great content!) is that you work in an efficient and safe manner. Using a dust mask, using push sticks with the table saw, all those little things get passed along to new viewers who will pick up those great habits. Great Job!

    Hey dude, love your work. Hoping for some advice, I'm using an MDF fire surround and have a log burning stove in place. I may just be worrying, but the insert of the firesurround gets quite hot when the stove is running. Will it be safe to use? I have seen others on instagram using the same surround and log burners so it should be OK. Just finding it hard to find some insight

    Just quick question, why don't you use your track saw to cut the 45 bevels?

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  Před 6 lety

      It would be tricky with thin cuts like this as the track wouldn't fit on the cut side. Table saw is much quicker. 👍

    • @painterman8863
      @painterman8863 Před 6 lety +1

      I have done thin cuts on site like that, just pack with a piece the same thickness to fit the track on mate.
      Cut the 45 to get two 45 cuts at once.
      If cutting in workshop yes it makes sense.

    I can see that you are correctly wearing a respirator when sanding the MDF but how do you deal with the dust contamination in your workshop? It would be really easy to kick up settled dust and it takes minimal exposure to potentially lose decades from your life. Personally I avoid MDF all together as it is just too risky.

      @cameronadz5583 Před 6 lety

      No like doing a slight shanfer on the miters so the filler had more of a gap to go into. It's just a different methord of getting a smooth finish on MDF miter.
