You know what I love about that Dan Akroyd Larry King quote: "I don't think we will ever have a formal relationship with any alien species out there. Especially after 9/11"
His character Ray Stantz from Ghostbusters would say that exact sentence, and it'd be totally in character.
Believe it or not, this movie is loosely based on one of Dan Ackroyd's real life experiences. He claims that he was pulled over for speeding late one night in the middle of nowhere. Instead of handing him a ticket, the cop insisted Dan follow him through the woods to an isloated, creepy old mansion. Once inside, the cop introduced him to "the Judge", an extremely odd and eccentric older lady, who kept Dan there for hours and hours just to talk to him, before finally letting him go. the making of this movie is pretty interesting. it went way way over budget. I actually think it's a really funny movie but maybe that's just because I grew up watching it. I also feel like Chevy Chase's phoned in, detached performance somehow works in this movie because of how weird it is.

For my entire adult life, I was 100% certain that this film was a nightmare I had as a kid. Up until now, I had no idea it was real. I mean, how could it be? It's just as weird and random as the nightmares you have as a kid. I feel like I've been living a lie. Holy shit.

Same deal with me. I could never remember the name of it. I just remembered a movie that Tupac was in where everyone was a grotesque monster and are disgusting sausages.
Same here. I remember being younger than 5 and staying up late(probably like 10pm, but it might as well have been 3am) and seeing bits like the Bonestripper and the musical number on HBO. I went through most of my life (as in up until 23 minutes ago) assuming it was some wierd fever dream or maybe a reimagining of a less batshit movie I saw and had recurring nightmares about.
Holy shit, I had the same experience. I was ready to just write it off as a weird mix of old nightmares and bits of other films, all mixed in my head.

I remember watching and loving this movie at the age of 7. It probably had some lasting effects that I wouldn't recommend.
It's probably the same lasting effect that made you enjoy the Egglike genre.

It’s absurd, with 90’s gross out humor, but it definitely gives you that trapped feeling. I remember being really disturbed by this movie back when it came out.

They literally just had fun laughing and reviewing the movie. You have to enjoy the movie for what it is, and I really enjoyed the movie. They pick apart the movie for it being to fantastic or not real. When I watched it I wasn’t expecting a Ken Burns documentary.
This movie was probably so poorly received because Dan Akroyd made for himself and no one else. It's so esoteric and uniquely Dan Akroyd that it would be inaccessible to most people.

When I was a young boy I remember seeing a movie with Tupac dancing with two giant diaper babies. Seeing this brought back those horrid images.. 10/10
The town is based on a real town in Pennsylvania called Centralia, it is also the inspiration for Silent Hill in the live action film

@@Lark1610 there's a giant underground fire that's been burning sense the 1960s, the fire department had an annual tradition of setting the landfill on fire at the end of the year as a big event, but that year it was built on top of a masive abandoned coal mine so when they burned the land fill the fire spread to the coal mine, and it's still on fire to this very day.
That’s so interesting because while I was watching this with my boyfriend last night he said it reminded him of Centralia, but was referring to Centralia, Washington. Which is also a kind grungy gross town, minus the underground fires.

Nothing but Trouble is totally one of those late night HBO movies you forget about and then remember a hint of it 10 years later and think it didn't actually exist, but was like a dream or something. Then when you actually come across it again you think "What the fuck? That was REAL? Someone REALLY made this?"

We did a lot of HBO watching when I was a kid, my mom would tape the movies whenever they ran a free promotional week and then we'd watch them over and over. For the longest time I had scenes from Nothing But Trouble and The Explorers mashed together in my head like they were one movie. Thankfully I remembered nothing about the dick nose until I watched this review.

I saw this movie as a very young child, and I genuinely thought for many years that it was just a messed up nightmare. Until I stumbled across it later in life and was completely baffled that it was a real thing that actually happened
I refused to eat any kind of hot dog or sausage for about 5 years after first watching this movie. That dinner scene was as bittersweet as it gets. The coolest table and condiment set up ever created, all used for the psychologically damaging, inexplicably creepy eating of a bunch of hot dogs or sausages or whatever the hell they were.
Someone could recut this movie as a straight horror movie and I'm sure it would be effective.

Dan cut it originally, it was going to be rated R, execs came in and edited it into PG13. We need the director's cut.

I watched this when I was WAY too young and it left a big impression on me. Can't say it is good, but for someone young who didn't fully understand storylines yet, it was quite an experience that I still hold dear in some strange way.
I know they’re mostly joking with the tcm comparison but after rewatching it recently I’m CONVINCED that Dan Aykroyd saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and then tried to make a wacky Goonies movie out of it

This was always a guilty pleasure for me. My father still quotes this movie sometimes out of the blue and it always makes me both facepalm and smile. "Fliiipper's dead?!" Good times!
Dan Ackroyd is an absolute mentalist. He essentially is his character from Ghostbusters when interviewed. This film is the work of absolute insanity. It's worth seeing just to see how truly out there it really is. They wouldn't have the balls to make anything this mental these days.

I remember seeing part of this on tv as a kid in the mid-90s. My parents and relatives had it on and they knew it wasn't appropriate for me to watch but the movie only had another 30-45 minutes so they had me go read some books and play with toys instead. I was at my grandparents house so the books there were new to me too, one was this giant book about the history of Mexican art, a lot of which was heavy on macabre imagery, especially Francisco Goitia
and José Guadalupe Posada
. (I was relived when I stumbled upon the colorful work of Frida Kahlo
toward the end of the book) What I did see of the movie was so bizarre and I didn't recognize anyone at the time, so I struggled for years to figure out what it was. After awhile I wondered it was a fever dream I retroactively assumed was a movie, especially since in that same couple hours I had visually devoured a lot of surreal artwork. It wasn't another 15 years before I came across this. I haven't watched the whole film since but what I have seen is interesting, it's a bit less strange than I expected but still very, very weird for something that isn't a more artsy indie flick - especially considering the cast and budget.
I must have watched this movie 20 times during the summer of 93 or so on HBO. Even though I knew it was awful, I had to watch it every time

My dad showed me this movie when I was a kid. It's One of my favorites!
I remember this movie freaking me the fuck out as a kid. Mostly the house and junkyard, which looked like something out of a goddamn nightmare.
I had never heard of this movie until my friend told me the entire plot over lunch. It was the most confusing thing I've ever heard of. He put huge emphasis on the "bone stripper" and the sausage train.
Thankfully walmart had it for 5 bucks.
I was not disappointed.

Stumbled across this movie a long, long time ago when it was on HBO (Showtime?). I was mesmerized and I believe it made me rethink the nature of our being. Life was never the same. Honestly, I was so damn confused.
The movie was produced to be R rated, one of the biggest reasons the plot has so many holes and oddities is because the studio left a ton of good stuff on the cutting room floor to get it down to PG-13. Supposedly the film as it was originally intended explained the characters far better and really played up the comedy by means of cartoonish violence and antics.
Release the Ackroyd cut. I did the thing!

9:56 When I was a kid this WAS a horror film to me. I only remembered the creepy judge, maze house, and giant babies so it was basically Texas Chainsaw Massacre to me until I saw it a few years later and realized the comedy in it.
Oh my God, I've been looking for this movie for other twenty five years, no joke. I remember watching this on TV in the early 1990's. I was probably about eight or nine at the time. I only remember part's of the movie like the insain house, the junk yard and the ending with the mutants and a train or something. I only remember little bit's of this movie but for some reason it always stuck with me. I thought many time's I found the film like with the crazy house in The People Under The Stairs and the mutants with the movie Freaks but I knew they wasn't the movie I was looking for. At the beginning of this video with a scene of the huge, mutant babies and a junk yard my first reaction was "this is it!!!"
Nothing But Trouble is creepy as fuck. Definitely rides a line between comedy and horror.

I saw this movie once on basic cable in the mid-90s and I never forgot it because of how aggressively weird, mean, and awful it was.

Look up the music video for that Digital Underground song. Not only does Dan Aykroyd cameo in the video, but he is seen standing next to Dr. Dre and Eazy-E while dressed as a member of NWA. He’s not in blackface, thankfully.
And the sad thing is that for all of the passion and creativity Dan Aykroyd poured into this movie, he refuses to talk about it these days. There was a movie critic who was interviewing him for an oral history of GHOSTBUSTERS, and the interview went so well that the critic asked him if he’d ever be up to participating in an oral history of another film of his. Aykroyd cheerfully asked “What film would that be?” The critic answered it was NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, because he wanted to find out how this weird ass movie came to be. Aykroyd dropped the cordial tone and interrupted the critic before he finished the question: “That would be a terrible waste of time, I think we’re done, thank you.” Then Aykroyd immediately hung up the phone. End of conversation.
Update 2023: On the Blu-ray features for Nothing But Trouble, Aykroyd says he's actually proud of the movie and its cult following, so there's now a touching sidenote to this story.
It's because he felt Warner Brothers butchered his Horror Comedy into a watered down pg-13 slapstick. When they showed the official screening of the film (the one that was re-edited) Dan and most of the main cast refused to attend.
As a kid watching this. It definitely was a horror movie and a depiction of hell or a nightmare that continues even after you wake up.
The fact that the whole town were in on it breaking the brief illusion of safety and the end where the judge is looking into the camera broke my sheltered innocent mind.

I randomly came across this movie flipping channels in a hotel with friends on a road trip. The show we were playing was shut down early, and we were in a highly altered state. If this movie wasn't weird enough already, it was on the next level that night.
My dad let me watch this when I was like 10 or 11. Think it left me permanently scarred. Would highly recommend it.

When I heard Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, John Candy, and Demi Moore were going to be in a film together, I got so excited. When I finally got to watch it on cable I couldn't sit through the whole movie. I got about a third of the way through.
Was an unforgettable experience when me and my buddy went into this movie completely blind expecting a by-the-numbers comedy.
This film is very special because, as a great man once said, "Dan Aykroyd is *100% buttfuck insane* ."

Demi Moore was quite the looker.
For me Demi Moore has the best eyes, like in the world. I went out with a girl many moons ago who had Those eyes and I would just swallow into them, she was a bloody psycho but she got away with far more than she should simply because of those peepers. Insane.

I hear the "All Around the World" song on XM every once in awhile and I could never remember how I knew it. I dig that song, but this movie was nightmare fuel for kids.

Saw this as a child and thought it was strange, recently saw it again and still think the same ,
HOLY FUCK! This movie gave me horrible nightmares as a child. I actually repressed it so hard, I forgot it was actually a film and not just a dream. That fucking junkyard, the fat boys, and Dan fucking Aykroyd. DO NOT SHOW THIS TO YOUR LITTLE KIDS.

It was over 20 years since I watched this movie, but 2 weeks ago I viewed it with my wife (it was her first time watching it). Now, Red Letter Media does a re:View on it. Coincidence?

I loved this movie as a kid and thought it would be a fun experience to share a slice of my childhood with my spouse. I was once again reminded that nostalgia goggles are a hell of a thing. Thankfully, we were able to enjoy the film as we ragged on it and laughed at its utter absurdity. Plus, we both love John Candy. Just seeing him on screen brings to mind all the joyful moments he brought to us growing up. He was, and is, a treasure that lives on in the memories of all those he entertained. Thank you, Mr. Candy, sir. Thank you.

Wait a second... Aykroyd wrote a Blues Brothers cinematic universe for the Blues Brothers? and the studios stopped him?... I would of loved to have seen a Donald the duck Dunne stand alone back story film... haha

Rich and Jack is a very interesting dynamic in this review. The absence of Mike's suicidal cynicism and Jay's slight tendency toward know-it-all-ism lets the R+J weird humor shine.
