  • The optional figure skate adapter first time usage. The Red snail cam must be set position 1. The two adapters protect the front toe pick and define where the initial cut is on the rear of the blade. This video is my first attempt of using the adapter. The skates sharpened where some old rental skates of unknown history. The adapter works with classic blades with parallel
sides, not composite blades with the wider frame that holds a runner.

Thank you for this great video. Do you think I can trust Sparx to do a proper job on my daughter's Pattern 99 blades. I see a lot of great reviews from people using Sparx for hockey skates but nothing regarding figure skates. Somewhat scared investing $1000 into machine only to see it mess up $600 blades.

It didn't work for me and my daughter has the Emerald Riedell skates. After several sharpening, the edges were not even. I had to go back to the store to even them out and resharpen. I contacted SPARX and they told me that it could be the quality of the blade. But, the SPARX works perfect on my son's hockey Bauer skates, both player and goalie skates. That's where I save the money as we sharpen his skates twice a week. Also, we save on gas and time. Unfortunately, it didn't work out w/ the Figure Skates. I know some rinks now carry the SPARX machines. It may be a good idea to try one sharpening with them ... that's if they carry the Figure Skate Adapter Kit. It may work better on your daughter's skates as the Pattern blades are much higher quality than the stock Emerald blade.

Hello Gina, "Pattern 99" is really a blade side profile with 3 radii. Wilson's design 3 radius pattern today is used by many other makers too. It has a 12" radius near the toe, 27 inch near the spin/pivot then a 8 ft radius region going back to the heel end. *** I wonder what blade brand and type your daughter's Pattern 99 blades are? John Wilson makes a Parabolic Pattern 99 variant where the blade thickness varies, thin in the middle, thicker in the toe and heel regions. This variant probably would not clamp properly in the Sparx or other hockey tabletop machines too. One clamps these at the stanchions, the constant thickness supports that "T" into the Heel and Toe plates. The Paramount 420SS Pattern 99 shown at 7:40 will not work because it is the Aluminum Frame variant. Your concern about not ruining blades is very wise, no matter what machine or place sharpens them. Higher end Figure skates often have features that cause a person who sharpens Hockey skates to ruin them. Most Hockey players are not aware of these features, thus the blade gets clamped wrong. Can you mention what "pattern 99" blade your daughter has?. Regards
