Fun fact about the Kalamari/Kalahari mistake. There's a mario kart circuit called Kalimari Desert based on the Kalahari desert
I hope there are no vegans involved with the South African Farming controversy

The Italian fun fact is not completely accurate: the ban of the former royal family was removed in 2002
Why were they banned?
@@dibujodecroquis1684 italy became a republic in 1946 after a referendum, and the king left the country to avoid a civil war. After that the newborn republic, to avoid any interference by the monarchs, decided to ban the royal family (which was ruling italy also during the fascist period).
Decades later it was clear that italians would have never accepted a monarchy again, the royals didn't have any relevance anymore. So they removed the ban in 2002

Loved the ZA episode! Also! MARMITE!!! We have it here in South Africa and it's pretty popular so I totally get why Katharine was surprised to see it!
More of a vegemite man myself but here in nz it's is in every supermarket, dairy and tuck shop so surprised its not in the us
@Jayy Rxbxl it’s a brewers yeast extract that’s been concentrated down and then salt, spices, veggie extracts, celery and some nutrients are mixed in. It’s an acquired taste as it’s kind of salty, savory and sticky... I tried some when i was in London and while I can’t remember the exact taste, I was not a fan, I also tried Vegemite in Sydney (Marmite and Vegemite are not the same thing aside from brewers yeast being the main ingredient) that tasted more like salty raw onions to me.)
Honestly, the best tasting edible yeast is nutritional yeast.
@Jayy Rxbxl my local "natural foods" store had some Vegemite once, but it was expired.
I'm more into Bovril than marmite, never tasted vegemite
Funnily, nobody I know eats marmite. I recently threw out a jar after 8 years in my cupboard and no takers (my sister's husband bought it).
I was so disappointed when Keith didn't WEEEEEEEEW in the actual episode. Glad to see he redeemed himself.

Phonetics fun fact:
The Polish name "Jędrzej" can be transcribed for you to English as "Yen-djay", IPA: ['jɛ̃dʐej]. True, our Polish cousins have sometimes quite tricky names...
Greetings from Czechia! ^^
How is that in the middle not and "ersh"? I thought "rz" in polish is the same as "r+hacek" in czech (sorry my keyboard can't handle haceks)
@@sachsenschnitzel6552 Actually, it should be - that consonant is common for both the languages, but in Polish the pronunciation slightly shifted towards "ż" ("ž" in Czech, "zsch"(?) in German). But I guess for the English native speakers the difference is hardly noticeable anyway.
@@martinkuchar9877 Ah good, I could never say r+hacek anyway :P
> "zsch"(?) in German
In case you're curious, that's the one thing I can tell you: in German writing there is no distinction between z+hacek and s+hacek, but in speaking there is. Both are written as "sch"
@@sachsenschnitzel6552
Echtes Czech "ř" is like pronouncing rolled "r" with your mouth shut and "Zähne zu". :D
I know I noticed places' names like "Zschopau" bei Chemnitz, therefore I though so, but nevermind. How do you distinguish the pronunciation then from the reading - you need to just learn when is [š] and when [ž]? And is it only the case in Sächsisch or in other dialects/regions as well?
@@martinkuchar9877 Oh ok then maybe I can say it I guess.
I just looked up that town, I have to say I'm really surprised at that spelling and never saw another word or name like it. Wikipedia says it's basically pronounced "tsch..."/"c+hacek" and I certainly would have said it wrong without looking it up haha. That's probably because I'm not from Saxony though, I'm actually Austrian altough my name suggests otherwise :)
About the distinction: After thinking about it and researching a little I couldn't find a single non-lean word using [ž]. There's lots of those like "genre" or "dschungel", but at the moment I would go as far as to say words with German origins never use [ž]
Though this is universal to German as far as I know and is definitely used in standard German.
Man, I really need to add Czech to my list of languages to learn. It's really beautiful I think
I loved Katharine's reaction to the marmite haha. Barbs, I hope you gave the jar to her as a gift.

Oh and Katherine is so lovely!
Wait. Johannesburg is bigger than Bengaluru? That's huge for a city that never gets attention.
I thinks it's size and not population, subcontinent cities have a reputation for cramming as many people into a small a space as possible and Johannesburg is absolutely massive
let me break it for you pal, but most people hear more about Johannesburg than Bengaluru.
Bengaluru is getting some attention now because of its IT/Industrial park, but Johannesburg was known worldwide for a lot longer
Johannesburg and Bengaluru are actually quite similar in population (metro area), but yeah Johannesburg was founded on gold so there is no "natural" reason for a city to be there. It is an arid area without much natural water.
Johannesburg is larger in size but Bengaluru has a bigger population. Just like how Mumbai has the larger population but Durban is is bigger in size.
@@niravramdarie9898 .its not about size but population..bengaluru wasnt included as it has lakes. He said no water bodies including rivers lakes amd coastline.

Fun fact about the apartheid-era flag: the UK union jack is flown "backwards" because they didn't want to insinuate that it was in a power position by being placed first (check the red diagonal bands to see they're different than the regular union jack)

Something I find very sad as a South African is that while we have 12 official languages (including sign language), we don't include indigenous San and Khoi among those official languages despite the fact that we have iXam on the coat of arms.
correct, just now changing the COA, still waiting
That would be because having *OFFICIAL* languages is about functionality.
It's kind of in the word: OFFICIAL. (Office, bureaucractic...)
Statistically nobody speaks those ancient languages.
It would be like lamenting that Latin is no longer an official language in European countries.
The majority of the genetic descendants of the speakers of such languages speak Xhosa, Tswana etc., even Afrikaans.

Katharine: "I do have a pet hippo but that's nothing."
Me: heh... thats cool...

Question: are you going to make videos on autonomous regions or self declared independent nations after Zimbabwe?
For pronunciation of Jędżej:
J - like in jay "y"
ę - "e" like in end, but nosal, try say en "e" thrugh your nose
d - just d
ż - like "g" in genre
e - "e" like in end
j - like in jay "y"
In the video is Jędrzej not Jędżej but in polish ,,rz" is like ,,ż". It's the same letter pretty much with the same pronounce.
PS: Wiem, że napisałeś to tak, żeby było łatwiej im to zrozumieć, ale i tak chciałem to dodać w razie jakby byli ciekaw :)
So... "Y-eh-d-gey"?
@@TheCriminalViolin Something along this, but I'm not sure 'bout "eh". It's just there isn't a good way to explain nosal vowels to native english speaker.
@@stanisawpiekieko9069 Yeah, especially considering Polska is one of the only languages that uses the latin alphabet yet practically no letter actually says it's own name (makes it's respective sound). When I found out Lodz was said as Wooj I lost my mind laughing and going "WHAT!? HOW?!" and that about sums it up! haha.
But yeah, for us, a nasal vowel is typically formed with a almost 'h' sound at their ends, much like almost any word or name we say nasally. British English is actually typically incredibly nasal, and so is the southern drawl of the rural southern US. It also shows up in the older generations of the midwest, especially in Wisconsin and Minnesota, both the latter regions historically dominated by German and Scandinavian immigrants respectively. So perhaps the nasal enunciation of the vowels you are looking for are not the same thing.
@@TheCriminalViolin When it comes to this city it's just bunch of diecritices. And "ó" made it's way from "oo" to "ö" to "ó".
