Vocal fry is life changing if you use too much falsetto and tend to try to yell notes that are too tight. I can't really tell if it adds compression or takes it away, but fry is absolutely amazing as a warm up. I just sang 10 songs last night in public on no sleep and a couple cups of coffee, and the fry got my voice relaxed and free, and has never sounded stronger or more full. If you have a habit of hanging out in falsetto too often, or worse, whistle register, and you find that trying to pull your whistle registered down into your speaking range has caused your voice to be tightened up like a winch, then vocal fry will undo all of that and make your voice voice feel like a long, tall tube of tone. A few years ago, I went to an ENT and we could see on the monitor that my arytenoids were not closing all the way. It produced a strangled sound, and I was also choking on liquids because the airway wanted to stay open when esophagus was jammed shut via a high larynx. After only a few days of using fry, I no longer choke on liquids because the fry has closed the gap that was happening when I would try to swallow, and now the esophagus opens when the airway closes. I can't believe that another ENT once told me to avoid vocal fry. That led to a preoccupation with falsetto, and I got very unbalanced vocally and functionally. Now it all works again! Fry is awesome.
Eric, after watching all four videos in this lesson, I have started to practise everyday. After about 3 days, I have noticed a HUGE difference in my singing. Major improvement. I could not be happier. The tone is great and my voice is much more powerful. My range still needs work and a notice some strain when I get a little high, but I will continue to practise everyday. Thanks so much! :)
Remember guys, ALWAYS listen to your body. If you feel pain or discomfort with ANYTHING, then stop; you are doing it INCORRECTLY. Healthy technique practice feels good and relaxing to the voice. Despite the harshness of the fry sound itself, the feeling should be EFFORTLESS. This is not the pressured/strained Kim Kardashian vocal fry. To the contrary, this is quite gentle (think "feather light"). As most of you have noted, there should be an immediate improvement in the clarity and freedom of your voice. Some of you have even noticed that healthily produced vocal fry can soothe a sore throat; feelings of the throat being soothed, "loose", or relaxed are excellent indications that you're headed in the right direction. So... If you've tried repeatedly but still feel uncertain, then stop doing it completely. And then set up a session with a certified AApproach instructor, to figure out where you might be going wrong - www.AApproach.com
I'm a voice major and composer at my university. So far I've only done the warm-ups in your video series, but I noticed a big difference after just the first day. Your approach to singing has really helped me beyond all the Professors here. I just wanted to thank you.
Eric, I've been watching your videos for a couple years on CZcams and you've helped my voice grow in so many ways. I listen to old recordings and I smile because of all the growth you've helped me achieve. Thank you for making these videos, I know that they can possibly sacrifice an additional income for you, but there are those of us out there that don't have access to a personal vocal coach so your videos are a total asset!! Thank you and I wish you continued success! :)
Huey Freeman If you do all the videos every day, you will see greater improvement that if you just saw one video. There difrent exercises for difrent things.
I havent yet no. But if your seriosly considering singing, all his stuff is going to help you alot. I mean, the more you put into your voice the better it will get. My practice has bin playing alot of live shows, instead of teachers, but if i could afford teachers im there.
Well.. I've learned something today. I've been doing vocal fry my entire life and I didn't even know it was a thing. Seriously. I've been starting with the crackles and working up and down since I was like 2. I feel proud in this moment. 😂
Thank you for your vids, unfortunately im in a place in life atm that i dont have money for anything extra so these vids help alot, i've watched many but so far yours are the best. Greetings from the Netherlands
Many of my students (especially those who suffer from chronic anxiety) have noticed that healthy vocal fry has a calming effect on the fight/flight response in the body. It's pretty great :)
Thank you for your videos! I practised 15 min a day this past week and am feeling and singing with much more range and strength! I can't even believe it because I've experienced straining and pain in my throat usually by the second verse whenever I sing. Now all that straining is gone and I'm hearing this different but better voice come out! My range changed too - I'm hitting the high notes with much more ease and with more practice I feel like I can go even higher!! I am doing relaxing techniques and doing vocal fry and yah yah along with lip rolls - for like just 5 minutes each and this is just amazing! Thank you so much for teaching me. XOXO
As a tenor singing mainly opera and classical I used too much of my vocal folds. I knew about vocal fry before discovering Eric but it turned my voice around. It made me really understand just how lightly the folds need to come together to produce sound. I often discovered that it often feels like nothing. It's what I return to when working on a new piece that is challenging. What was also very important for me was doing the exercises without expectation. I spent years getting frustrated because I was not making progress. The light approach has been my saviour. I have my own teacher but I'm always in great admiration of Eric. I've directed several amateur singers to his site knowing how safe his approach is. I needed to SHARE!
Eric Arsenault is the ONLY online vocal training professional my primary vocal coach is okay with me following. After 2 diagnoses of muscle tension dysphonia in 2008 and again in 2017 (Bad singing techniques/stress/cobblestoned voice box from acid reflux) and 7 yrs unable to sing because my vocal folds wouldn’t touch, leaving an airy and inaudible sound, a year and a half of therapy at a voice Institute and additional sessions with a speech therapist, not to mention years of discouragement, his 4-pt warmup helps me tremendously after I do my daily therapeutic vocal exercises! I recommend him to all my professional friends and singers at my church. Thx Eric! You’re the best to provide these videos to help singers and people who use their voices for a living at no cost. Treatment for my condition is $150 per session and insurance doesn’t cover it! So this has been a tremendous help in my recovery journey. After four years of using these videos for my daily and weekly warm-ups I just had to say thank you! I am definitely on the road to recovery and even back in studio. 😭😭😭🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾♥️♥️♥️ Luv n Blessings!
Love vocal fry! I noticed once when I didn't have time to do this warmup but did the others my voice just didn't sound right, vocal fry does 90% of the work in my opinion!
I do your warm-ups everyday fro about 20-25 minutes and then I start practicing vocal techniques like falsetto, high notes, Riffs and runs and vibrato! And then I just try singing a song.
i know you'll probably never see this, but i'm a drummer. i went this route because although singing was one of my biggest passions ever, i felt i wasn't good enough. recently i've been giving it another shot, and using these warm-ups i legitimately feel more confident in my range, strength and just overall voice. i understand that practice makes perfect but after only three days i can feel and hear the difference. thank you so much for this, i hope i can reach my dream some day.
Your vocal lessons are great but I feel so awkward doing them sometimes XD My family thinks I'm crazy now because of all the sounds they hear coming from my room when I practice. I'm not going to stop though.
I'm playing a concert (was asked to play with one week's notice, and I have school and work on the side) this saturday. I started singing the other day, and it psysically hurt because I was so out of practice. Tree days of doing your vocal warmups, and my voice is almost back. One round of warmups and singing didn't hurt anymore. If I actually pull of this concert, it'll be thanks to you my friend!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post these videos. As someone who has always aspired to be a singer, but had trouble affording vocal lessons, this is so appreciated!
However, I often brighten my tone when teaching, since many beginner singers hear the pitches more clearly and distinctly that way. Voice classification is ALSO dependent upon where you "bridge" or transition. Unlike a true tenor, I begin to feel a significant transition as early as Bb below middle C (the exact pitches vary, based on vowel sound & intensity/volume of the tone).
I just wanna say, thank you for sharing your knowledge here on CZcams. I have been listening and doing the exercises for only about 30 min now and I can already hear a diffence! Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving these awesome instructions to everyone that will take the time to listen and do the exercises. You are a God-send. God bless you.
I had never considered myself a singer. I am a creative person who is venturing into new territory. Growing up I only sang in choirs, but if someone asked me to sing solo, I let fear literally constrict my voice. YET... whenever I was just "playing around" for funzies I could do amazing things and sound beautiful. I realize now that the only difference was fear. Thank you for helping me relax, strengthen, free, and own a voice locked by fear for too long. You're awesome!!!
Hi Eric, I've been singing for years, and have had my issues with tension in the throat and neck area in the high notes. Thanks to these 4 videos on warm up I've managed to improve immensly! So I just wanted to say thanks! =)
3:14 Shoulders, jaw, neck relaxed 4:04 what is most advised to do (m instead of uh) 4:27 what not to do with it (don’t obtain the crackle at the expense of your neck. It won’t do you any good). 𖤛 Make sure it feels VERY GENTLE!! The touch is featherlight. If you lose the crackle, let it and come back. You’ll build the fry up. 𖤛 Only vocal fry in the range that feels comfortable for you.
I just tried all 4 warm ups once each. I noticed how I never felt my throat as prepared like this ever when I sang before. I was trying to do warm ups to open my throat to speak with better tone for public speaking, but these routine made my tone, both speaking and singing WAY better than I expected! Thanks so much! I'm gonna start doing this regularly.
I started singing lessons in my teens, which I'm just turning 60 years this month. I love the simplicity and form you are showing that loosens the vocal chords up so effortlessly! I just started them today for the first time in years, and I'll give you some feed back to how my vocals feel by birthday in 2 weeks. Already, from a these few exercises, I feel my voice loose up quite a bit! So, I look forward to more practices and improvements. Great Tutorial!
I practiced with the songs I couldn't hit any notes with, and I hit them perfectly after doing warm-ups. They help so much. It feels like the whole top of my body shut, and my lips are moving. I can barely feel the words coming from my voice, its amazing. Thanks so much, this helped so much, to the point where I think I actually have more confidence to post videos.
Wow, out of all the exercises i've come across/done, this is the best one for my voice - which is also deep/baritone. It feels like it's much easier for me to talk with a rich depth without feeling like my throat is straining! There's just a natural projection to my voice without sacrificing the depth and clarity. Amazing! Thank you!
im like... maybe 3 - 4 months now i been doing em 6 or 7 days a week...... goddamn i really had no idea just how much my voice could change... i used to have the paralyzed throat and now that im loose and getting a column of tone im realizing im gonna have to be that singing piano player now .... im not afraid to do that anymore... thanks eric
Thank you Eric, we use these videos for choir practise, and as someone who has never sung before being in the choir I have heard improvements in my voice after just using one of your videos. God bless you, Jesus loves you.
just get it i was unable to sing low pitch song but it hel[ed me a lot your classes are just perfect i hit the subscribe by now you are just amazing clarifiying the most errors in class it self ... i liked it man
A thousand thanks Eric! Over the past 6 months your videos have helped to bring me to a point where I'm now confident enough to sing on my own records, and begin a new band project. Before finding you, I was purely an instrumentalist. For changing my music for the better, I owe you my gratitude!
the 4 videos u made.. have helped me just speak louder normally.. and help me not mumble so much ... and iv been working on my screaming, and saw your videos... they helped me more then anything I could find
Thank you sir this is really helping my voice I do all of the warm-ups..I've been looking for a vocal coach for along time now and I finally found one...I just wanted to know is it good to do Skype lessons
Me now: why do vocal warm ups have to be so weird😩 ***tries it anyway Me in the next five minutes : zayuuummm, I'm a Celine Dion reborn!!! 😍😹 Thanks Eric. Your warm ups are life! You're cute BTW🌚💜
Wow this has really made a difference in my voice already. I'm excited to see what I sound like if I keep practicing this every day and I'm gonna check out your other videos too.
when I was little I used to sing so well,I used to play with my voice a lot and make weird noises and I used to do this voice fry thing haha so it's actually good for my voice OMG :D
I just found your channel. I love it! You may have answered this, but how do you clear your throat of post nasal mucus? It affects singing my tremendously.
I am novice looking to build a solid voice for composing original material, should I treat all 4 segments as one warm up? or take one video as the bulk of my practice? also notice your scaled exercises are in octaves, should I work on one scale at a time or move consecutively up the keys?
Wow man, these warm ups are exactly what I was looking for, and needed. Went through the videos once, and I'm already hearing improvement, and feeling it. I will be at this everyday. Many many thanks for offering this up for everyone, you're the man.
***** its like a warm up, you do it once a day and like it will expand ur range so yea you will slowly become better and the workouts help warm u up for better freer vocals, by the way id like to hear u sing is there any way we could communicate like send me a voicemail so I can hear?

A thousand thanks Eric! Over the past 6 months your videos have helped to bring me to a point where I'm now confident enough to sing on my own records, and begin a new band project. Before finding you, I was purely an instrumentalist. For changing my music for the better, I owe you my gratitude!
Its shocking how well this worked! lol
Vocal fry is the most vocal relaxing exercise frfr
the 4 videos u made.. have helped me just speak louder normally.. and help me not mumble so much ... and iv been working on my screaming, and saw your videos... they helped me more then anything I could find

Thanks Eric. Your warm ups are life! You're cute BTW🌚💜
Wow this has really made a difference in my voice already. I'm excited to see what I sound like if I keep practicing this every day and I'm gonna check out your other videos too.
Eric, please continue your series.... these vocal tutorials are sooo helpful! i notice an appreciable change in my voice. thanks a ton.
not me disassociating in the middle of doing this exercise then wondering who was cutting the grass💀
if u dont regularly dissociate during these exercises i dont think ur doin em right
when I was little I used to sing so well,I used to play with my voice a lot and make weird noises and I used to do this voice fry thing haha so it's actually good for my voice OMG :D
Eric, I can't believe how much this helped my voice! It feels so smoother when I sing, and my range is a bit higher already! Thank You so much !
Please do continue your teachings they are great.
Omg I’ve been doing that “uuuuhhhhh” sounds all my life. :p
keep doing videos to sing better cuz I think ur a great teacher and I need help
Thank you Eric.
All your warm-up videos helped me a lot.
Thank you so much...just getting back into practice and so needed these exercises!
I just found your channel. I love it! You may have answered this, but how do you clear your throat of post nasal mucus? It affects singing my tremendously.
Trying to do vocal fry but my dog keeps looking at me very worried, like I might be challenging him for domination 😂
your vocal warmups are the best sooo simple and to the point not like some other teachers i see on here
I started doing these since I was 11, and I still do them. This has helped so much!
I always try to remember the movie. The Grudge haha. That chick in the closet makes the same sound pretty well haha. :P
These warm-ups are so helpful - thank you for sharing!!
For the people who done this for a while should I do all 4 parts of the 4 part video series or should I just do this video?
Do all 4 trust me
all 4.
all four bro
***** ALL 4. As boring as it may seem, the results are worth it.
*****
its like a warm up, you do it once a day and like it will expand ur range so yea you will slowly become better and the workouts help warm u up for better freer vocals, by the way id like to hear u sing is there any way we could communicate like send me a voicemail so I can hear?

Hi! Could you tell me what this is actually doing in my throat?
EricArceneaux
EricArceneaux Why can I not crackle 😔
These warm ups really work and you get quick results in a matter or weeks this is amazing
Merciii Eric 🙏🏾💖🤗 Just started to sing and your warm ups are dope ✨✨✨ aligning with energy, body, mind 🌿🔮🙏🏾
now this warm up reminds me of grudge's ghost lol i have been always scaring others with this voice
I talk in this all the time and never knew what it was called!
I wouldn't recommend talking with a fry all the time. It can actually really mess up your vocal chords if you talk like that all the time.
Not constantly, but I do find my self doing it to mock people and things like that.
Having watched these 4 videos, I felt better, like there's hope for me to do better.. Thanks Eric! Godspeed!
Thank you for these 4 videos ❤
2019 anyone???
its 2020
how do you know if your a bass, baritone, tenor, alto or soprano?
Thanks my voice is improving immediately. This is the real deal. True vocal support and health.
Thank you so much for all the vocal warmup and also all the other videos, Eric! -Artur
