Only elder scrolls game I played where I became a flying, lightning slinging werewolf lizard man god instead of a stealth archer
Funny, Daggerfall is where I started playing as a stealth archer...
Oh the first elder scrolls game i played was morrowind
Actually, in Morrowind, you're mostly the stealth flying lightning slinging werewolf lizard god type too, not the stealth archer type.
Greatest game possibility, but before it's time and buggier than hell.
All builds lead to stealth archer. It's only a matter of time.
You know, I just realized that Daggerfall holds the distinction of being the only Elderscrolls game where you don't start-out as a prisoner.
+WhiteTigerShiro You are a prisioner of nature, since you get trapped in a cave.
also, daggerfall had LADDERS?!? So, the game engine went backwards since FO3, NV and skyrim doens't have any?
+megaed99
Not really, as you can just click the ladders to climb them.
Lucas Cunha Rocha I suppose, but that's reaching and we both know it. =P
***** I know, I'm just saying that it doesn't have to be a chore. :-)
Been a while since I played, but I seem to recall climbing being important to beat the main story mission, too.
I never played Daggerfall until it was released for free in 2009. Within two weeks, it received the honour of the first (and to date, only) game I had ever deleted from my hard drive because it was completely consuming my life. I'd played Morrowind, WoW, Baldur's Gate, Civ, Heroes of Might and Magic... none of them could suck me in quite like this game. Which is weird, because overall, I prefer all those games to Daggerfall. But there was just something magical about it. No RPG before or since has ever been quite able to convey that feeling of a massive world that you are just a small part of. You could travel around a lot and get lost in a sea of towns, taverns, and guildhalls, or you could settle down. Pick a town and make it your home. Become intimately acquainted with its shops and inns, get to know the surrounding towns, and one day, wake up and realize that there are thousands of other towns throughout the game.
Lol you gotta give it another go. Such a delightful game with all the bug fixes added
I played it lot at 90's and experience still unmatched, I think it would be perfect game to revisit with VR
You did a great job of describing the feeling that Daggerfall provides!
Loved Morrowind. Completed the whole game pkus 2 add-ons 3x or more. Loved Daggerfall. Now it's Subnatica and GTA 5.
Daggerfall really is in a league of its own. Nowadays, we have a lot of sandbox RPGs to choose from, but nothing really compares to this.
Cool thing about Daggerfall is that you can control it like a modern first person game, instead of using that oldschool style. Keyboard is fully mappable, and it has mouse-look! Full-screen too, you can turn off that massive bar with the icons at the bottom.
kinda annoyed me that he played it like it's arena lol. with less than a minute's setup you can make it look and control like morrowind does, with modern controls and mouse-look like you said.
Yeah it was frustrating seeing him use the clunky controls.
@@MultiCheeseLouise What if he prefers the old-school style for Daggerfall, or just wanted to use it this time?
@@TristenSarelvun it’s slower and more difficulty to use, as well as less precise. The only reason you use it in arena is because you have to. Why would you want to make a game harder to control?
Ah, the guards. Nothing like running for a minute or two from going a single "HALT" every few seconds to "HALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALTHALT"

HAIL, MY EMPEROR!!!!!!!!!
This box... Is *Magnificent*
While it will always be a matter of opinion which ES game is best, you can't deny that Daggerfall was way ahead of it's time, and one of the best roleplaying games ever made.
If you think that making a game where all you do is travel around from boring filler content city to boring filler content city with *_some snow particle effects_* added in is a great game, then I guess so
It was a fricking DOS RPG. In that time games like Lemmings and pac-man were considered to be top-tier games. How can you say it was not ahead of its time ..
LosEagle it wasn't ahead of its time. I don't see anyone else using RNG to make a huge, empty and soulless RPG setting.
Oh wait, no man's sky.
Maybe I went too far saying it was 'one of the best roleplaying games of all time,' having just finished a playthrough of it for the first time in over a decade, but I stand by 'ahead of it's time.' It had a great skill system, an interesting main quest, massive and challenging dungeons, and a fully customizable spell system not seen anywhere else. I'll admit that the sidequests and towns were random and generic, and that the game was a bit too big for it's own good, but it was still a great game, especially for the year it was made.
Even back then Bethesda was known for it's glitches? It seems they've kept the tradition.
Yes indeed, it really is the Bethesda Way™
What one would almost expect with a game of this proportions. :)
flatshade Absolutely, and it pays off in a way! There's a reason their games can get away with being so buggy.
i have only played daggerfall and morrowind and i must say that daggerfall was *way* buggier than morrowind
Except they actually released a comprehensive patch rather than letting the mod slaves do it for them.
So happy you're going over TES series! I hope you don't skip battlespire, redguard, and the 3 mobil travels games!
What are the mobile games?
Iivaitte Your thinking before the legendary skills added the game allows you to achieve every perk in the game thus doing everything at level 252.
slash rocks I wasn't talking about skyrim, and besides that was added in a later patch for those avid completionsts. Honestly I think being able to master everything means there is nothing special about your character. What I meant to say was more like, you shouldn't be able to max everything. The game wasn't designed to balance that.
Iivaitte What game are you referring to I responded to a person talking about skyrim. Even Morrowind and Oblivion you can max every skill out you had an auto perk ever 25. The only ones that you couldn’t achieve everything were Arena, Daggerfall and Battlespire. I agree you shouldn't be able to do everything in a game there needs to be limits. I would prefer a more traditional approach on Tes witch was basically the old school D&D classes.
***** Interesting I'm not aware of that bug so your telling me you can pick a barbarian yet somehow cast all magic, use every skill available, use any weapon and armor.
Recently bought TES Anthology, and in my excitement I accidentally ripped one of the maps that come with it... I have never swung from orgasmic happiness to universe-hating despair so quickly in my entire life.
Woah. That's heavy. That's like... I dunno, getting a hot dog and realizing they put ketchup in it without asking.
UnclePutte Yes! I know! Finally, somebody who understands my plight.
I bought mine recently too, I haven't damaged anything yet thank god. But man I wish I had that original box set, Daggerfall is my favourite game ever (have only played it and Skyrim up until now)
darkdave1998 I know! That holofoil skeleton dude on the front is so badass. It's no surprise that it's a rare collector's item nowadays.
I know how you feel.
If you hate gaining levels and love masochism, create your own custom Linguist class in Daggerfall! There are so many languages to choose from to fill up all your primary and secondary skill slots. And the best thing about the language skills is that not only are they almost impossible to get better at, but they're also practically useless for any sort of combat, quest completion, or money making tasks!
Ah, yes, making all of the enemies in a dungeon comprised of Harpies and Orcs nonhostile wouldn't help anything, for sure.
Milo Thatch be like
I loved the character creation in this one, I don't know why they didn't bring the weakness/advantage system back for the sequels.
As many people have pointed out with TES, it's the dumbing-down to get a larger audience.
*****
I think Daggerfall has the best character creation out of all TES games. But Skyrim has the best options when creating your character's appearance. The people and beast-folk in un-modded Oblivion are just ugly (they look better even in Morrowind and Daggerfall...) and they can't even grow a beard!
I just wish the more modern TES games had the same character creation as Daggerfall... except with Skyrim's appearance creation. Choosing a head sprite didn't really bother in Daggerfall but in modern TES games choosing a head wouldn't be very good... Ha ha.
Ikr?? Surprisingly how newer games in the series became not as in depth with some things. Like at least they should have brought back the court system. But it definitely would have been interesting if the class creation was this in depth for the newer games. As awesome as it will turn out anyway I really hope the upcoming elder scrolls VI has the best of the old and new games
Agreed. Though, to be fair, you could really cheap out with it.
Well you could create very overpowered builds, I had spells that would last 24 hours that gave me levitation and invulnerability and I flew over towns and just firebombed everyone laughing like a mini god.
Me as a 12 year old:
Made a Khajiit magical boxer who could use no armour or weapons.
Immediately spent the rest of the game accruing and only wearing Khajiit suits, munchkin-ing magical buffs and punching ancient vampires to re-death.
Became a thief wanted in every other kingdom after abandoning & time-outing the main quest and going on High Rock-wide burglary and rampant spree-killings.
2 years later still playing that character and kept the same old PC as a dedicated 'Daggerfall machine'.
"This is amazing."
Get daggerfall unity fixes most stuff, free, and mod that marks in-game your targets in dungeon (some are impossible to get though😟)
Daggerfall was the fuckin best game to be a thief eva

Hey LGR, are you on the Morrowind or the Daggerfall train?
I'm partial to Daggerfall myself, but I can't deny that Morrowind greatly improves the controls and interactivity of the game.
The two best games!!!
daggerfall is superior
@@victorkreig6089 you N'wah
I love pretty much every elder scrolls game. Love when fans can come together to appreciate this amazing game series.
@@generalgrievous2438 which do you love the most?
I wish that we could get something like Daggerfall from a game engine like Skyrim.
you gonna need 64 GB of RAM, 10 TB of space, and at least 16 GB of graphic memory...
We're not that far from that, actually.
+Muhajir Eh, with procedural generation and correct use of LODing it shouldn't be too hard to get a "Skyfall" running solidly on even budget gaming rigs these days, though i would suspect your save file would balloon pretty fast if it wants to keep track of every which dungeon you've visited.
"procedural generation"... you remember No Man's Sky?
Not possible at the moment
I've played Daggerfall. Game is REALLY hardcore in it's RPG elements. I mean, it ain't Dwarf Fortress but it's a very big game so a lot of it is pretty distracting. I can't imagine what poor soul bought this expecting something simplified like Skyrim or Oblivion and getting what they got.
@NPC# 8675309 Its still heavily simplified from Daggerfall, as was Morrowind.
I baught this not realizing how broken this game is, lol.
@NPC# 8675309 infinitely? No lol. Skyrim is the most stripped of the bunch obviously, but it doesn't take much to understand Oblivion either.
@NPC# 8675309 unfortunately that's not gonna happen. Anything close to the complexity of daggerfall is gonna come from indie developers. Sadly, I predict the next elder scrolls to be more streamlined than ever.
The older games are such a shit fuck of a boring mess
Fun fact: you never see a dagger falling in the whole game.
I can't believe Bethesda would lie to us like that, smh and crying into my Todd Howard plushie
TODD IS A HACK
It’s called daggerfall cause of the heavy rain i think
4:25 "King of the Daggerfall Province" ..*adjusts nerd glasses* ahem actually the province is known as High Rock, Daggerfall is simply one of the city-states within it ahem
"AHCKCHUALLY"
Dav You tell em, Lenny
Thanks Ghost in a Jar, you always were good at understanding video game maps, lore and obscure comedy
+Tiber Maxson Wait, seriously? But isn't Daggerfall the capital of High Rock? I thought Lysandus (and later Gothryd) was both king of Daggerfall and High Rock.
Ahem *dies of ass cancer after watching your comment*
You played the game without the camera controls? You poor, poor thing.
I played for the first 4-5 hours not realizing you could change camera modes. It's not as bad as you think, you really get used to it.
Sony Pony Gaming I know, but I feel the camera controls are superior for all non-pure mage builds.
Derpy Dude
It's okay, Daggerfall is awesome, but complicated as f***!
+Jack Stoutamore fuck*
How do I learn this power? Or is it just binding the keys to turn and look up and down? Because that's really annoying for some reason.
i miss the old days when games actually came with small books aka manuals that you spent and hour or so reading over and over while shopping with your parents trying to prepare yourself for it when you got home finally
Bro. This took me back 20years. Like my mind was just raving in fantasy.
Ive always loved how if you pick pocket the enemies in the first dungeon the thieves guild will often contact you before you can even travel somewhere else. they must have eyes everywhere, and also be really desperate for new recruits if they go after someone trying to pick pocket a giant bat
😂
every other RPG: GOTTA DO THAT MAIN QUEST
players: OK!
TES game: Emperor sends you to fulfil prophesy and destiny
players: nah fuck that I'm buying a house and robbing people
Buying a house BY robbing people ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I played this game as a coop, I was walking and my friend was fighting with the mouse, than we switched... we did it like this for 3 months str8 untill we finished the game. He was basically living with my familly, we played at my house, sometimes my parrents got angry and expelled him. But we still found the ways to continue, even if it was sneaking my friend in so parrents dont know etc. Insanity I tell you. Utter insanity. I remember when we finished the main quest, we sat the character in a house he owned and quit the game. It was a role play masterpiece. I think I was 13 at those times.
I was really surprised by Daggerfall. I've been a fan of the series for years but I had never played it for some reason, and now I've had it 2 days and I've got 16 hours on it so far, and there is so sign of me needing to slow down. I haven't played Oblivion much, but I've played a lot of Morrowind, and a ton of Skyrim, and I adore those games, but Daggerfall I adore even more.

Hey... Hey lgr... It's about that time again. Arena was 4 years ago, Daggerfall is now 2 years. It's that time again. Please make morrowind.
Morrowind won't be for a while yet.
Redguard is next on the Elder Scrolls agenda!
Well, hurry up ya dingus
Lazy Game Reviews Can't wait for the video, I love your reviews!
Marshmellow Madness
it has been done
Lately, reading about the development of Arena and Daggerfall is just as fascinating as playing the games (been on a research kick recently). When development began on a sequel to Arena, Bethesda wanted to set the game in Morrowind. Yes, Morrowind. Due to technological limitations, the team switched to Daggerfall (well, the Iliac Bay region that includes the provinces of High Rock and Hammerfell).
The feature-creep got so bad that Bethesda basically told the team to get the finished. As such, several guilds were cut from the game (including prostitutes) and the team were unable to get hills and mountains working properly so the terrain is mostly flat in the final game. Daggerfall XL is attempting to put those features back.
Thanks for the info. That's definitely interesting.
Mountains thankfully actually exist, but they're way too large to see properly. There's two really tiny ones that are extreme easy to see though, one is in the Isle of Balferia and the other is west of Sentinel.
This review had a great script.
Thank you!
Lazy Game Reviews LGR make a video ( making of an LGR episode )
Leikjarinn I did one sorta like that! czcams.com/video/cZUEoimYy6Q/video.html
All of them do, that's why LGR is so great
I have such fond memories of that game.
I still remember the tention I felt when hearing "Vengeaaance" for the first time in the middle of the night.
I was in the Army at the time Arena came out. I saw it in the on base store and it looked interesting so I bought it. I really loved Arena and when I heard Daggerfall was coming out I was first in line to get it.
"Emperor Urethra Scrotum." Dude, you're hilarious and I love your commentating, all through-out this game review. XD
Playing Daggerfall for the first time on DOS was literally a life-defining moment for me lol. I don't think I'll ever stop playing the elder scrolls, even if they DO keep getting worse in new and fascinating ways.
Still a video I come back to every year because LGR is a LEGEND
It's kinda funny how Bethesda clearly lost or abandoned that retro styled "sexy fantasy world" aesthetic. All these bare chested muscle bound gladiator style warriors, and curvy skin showing ladies, vampires and such. Makes me think about all the "is/isn't lore lore friendly" arguments over Skyrim and Oblivion mods. The skimpy inclined crowd could start using the excuse, "It's lore friendly historically accurate armour, from the 3rd era, for your information." or such. Would be good for a laugh at least.
I liked this style. Both genders were dressed scantily clad, so it was fair.
looked dumb as hell thank god they abandoned it
@@BurkinaFaso69 Because RPG's are dumb, might as well have fun with them all the same.
@Knower-Liberty-Gamer1776 Horror was also a BIG influence on RPGs and games in general of this era. From Diablo's The Butcher to Hexen to Heretic to (obviously) Doom, I think that's one of the most missed and uncredited inspirations of 90's games, horror and "gorefest" stylistic touches.
And it is to me the missing secret sauce when occasionally a company tries to reboot these games as just your average modern 3D action game or RPG.
*cough cough* Caius Cosades *cough cough*
I really like the idea of choosing your starting point in Tamriel. When playing games like ES I love creating my own backstory. Choosing which environment you start in would even further elevate that. It would be nice if ES6 went full throttle and did all of Tamriel bringing back the choose your starting point idea.

I loved daggerfall, it was one of the first games I owned on PC. I played that game for countless hours; and strangely, my sister and i were able to turn it into a multiplayer game by one of us controlling the keyboard and the other the mouse (which is ironic given that we were sworn enemies at the time, and could barely stand to be around each other, haha). It was truly a remarkable game, without countless hours of content and things to do or try. My sister enjoyed shopping, i enjoyed dungeon crawling, but at the end of the day the 12yr old boy and 16yr old girl were able to pair up and conquer the world of Daggerfall -- well at least I was, she really just mostly enjoyed the shopping part :D I remember printing the walkthrough guide -- yeah, remember those? Haha -- and it in and of itself was a massive book taking a 1/4 ream of paper -- or at least it seems like that much back in the day. Great review, great game, great channel a+
Back in the day this seemed to be the biggest leap in gaming ever. As you say the options were amazing, the open feel was completely revolutionary as was the ability to build the character you want, your way.
Loved the sounds too, used to feel genuinely 'on edge' when among the bat noises I could hear a Lich. :)
Great memories.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..........scary shit.
“Other than everything being the same, everything is different”
This is my first LGR video I've ever seen and holy cow I watched the whole thing without even realizing this video came out over 9 years ago. I just kind of assumed it came out less than a year ago.
Also, this game looks amazing and I want to play it so bad
Heh, i noticed you were struggling climbing the ladder. Press your use key (activate center object?) on it. Took me over a year of on and off playing to figure that out.
Daggerfall is by far, the best TES game I have ever played. I love Morrowind and Oblivion to death, and Skyrim is amazingly satisfying to boot up for a few hours of romping around the mountains and looting dungeons, but none of those games provide the same level of open world, fantasy life like Daggerfall has for me. So many factions, so many reputations, skills, quests, dungeons, cities... just so much to do!
Oh man, this along with Morrowind are my two favourite Elder Scrolls games. Why? Because absolutely excellent story writing and world building. And the world world is important in that sentence. Because it feels like quite the believable world. Especially in Daggerfall were some cities are the size of the entire map of Skyrim.
Oh how I long for Bethesda to make another game of the scale of Daggerfall, but alas. They have gotten a taste for the money that simplifying every aspect of the game can get them. And so they will never take the risk that would be making a game as ambitious as Daggerfall was.
I hope you had a lot of fun replaying the game while doing your work to make this episode and didn't stumble upon too many game crashing bugs.
Yes, blame the guys for wanting money, they should do everything for free.
*****
I said scale, not size. With scale I mean that cities are as large as cities and not as small as the smallest township on the tiny island I live on.
The big thing is that going away from randomly generated content because it was felt everything looked the same hasn't actually done that. Because Skyrim, just like Just Cause was created with a toolset that has premade tileset elements that are used to quickly build levels.
As for impossible? We'll have to see how Kingdom Come: Deliverance pans out. They have billed themselves as being to scale. There is still some compression on the map between landmarks, but it isn't 99%
I hope the game is good and does well so as to put some competition in the open world first person franchise. But I have learned to keep my expectations low.
P.S.
Short swords are still in Skyrim, they just aren't a separate skill anymore like they were in Morrowind.
Oh boy, I remember being stuck at that one cave for half-a-year.
Skyrim can be altered and built upon with mods from the ground up. You can make your own Daggerfall within Skyrim.
Actually considering the vast size of Daggerfall you can not. It is simply too large for one man to do.
Dude, you are fast becoming my favourite youtuber. I was going to set up an account to review and play all the old classics myself, but you've already done it in a much more entertaining way than i would have. DOS will always be the best platform for gaming for me. An endlessly magical place of wonder .
Always save before taking one of those randomly generated quests, which are sometimes b0rked. Get the recall spell and set the anchor at the dungeon exit.

Well, I know that I'm arriving 6 years later but, you should try Daggerfall Unity! It makes a great difference playing this game!
What are you talking about, that cutscene at the start with the king is great! Thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting is pretty good as well as the props. Also, Excuse the Gloom is such a good opening line.
I still own my copy of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall complete with foil box and all it's contents. This got me addicted to PC gaming....
When exploring dungeons, make sure you have the Mark and Return spells!!
I've three other of your reviews so far and this one was probably the best i have gotten to see, so ima drop a sub keep up the good work
I honestly really like how the melee controls work for Arena and Daggerfall. Moving the mouse in different directions to swing or thrust is an interesting method. I think a jazzed up version of that would have been interesting for the newer games.
Daggerfall was also allowing you to become a werewolf, a wereboar, or a vampire. With the associated transformations and quests to cure yourself.
I love your work keeps me entertained from start to end. perfect reviews make me want to play ball these old games
Hey, Clint, this video just appeared on my CZcams front page and despite the fact that I am 41, depressed, jaded, and find very little enjoyable, you made me laugh! Great scripting and editing! I started with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. You've got me interested in Daggerfall now, especially since it is free and has patches for modern computers. Thanks for the fun video!
'Like a horny dog it needed fixing' these kind of jokes are why I'm a subscriber to your channel mate.
You should take a look at Daggerfall Unity, it's everything Daggerfall should have been and more, it even has mod support which makes the game even better - my favorite being the airship mod.
Holy moly, that box...! It's like an OG Fighting Fantasy cover turned up to 11!
I don’t know much about computers but I am 33 and my dad owned a small pc repaid business when I was a kid and I have seen a lot of what you show on this channel. I love it because a lot of it is stuff I hadn’t thought about in years and I remember it when you show it. Great days those were
I remember when all the computer gaming magazines were freaking out over this one. And I was salivating right along with them. I went to the game store near my house every day for like 3 months, "Is it in yet? Is it in yet? Is it in yet?" Fortunately, that's what she said jokes hadn't been invented yet.
I finally got it in my hands, only to realize that my computer could only run it on the lowest settings, and it was constantly crashing. I never did get any of my characters above level 2, and I never did beat it, but I still put hundreds of hours into it, just walking around, looking around, exploring, getting into GTA style rampages, and just generally living in the world.
Great memories. But when I try to go back to it now a days, I just can't play much past the first dungeon. It's just too dull and clunky. I can barely play Oblivion now. Morrowind just makes me sad. Daggerfall is just like playing with a ball-in-a-cup, compared to modern games.
You are right, these games are unplayable for me except oblivion Im playing it right now
either the joke flew past you or your joke flew past me
I don't know, dude. I've never played Daggerfall, so really cannot speak for it, but compared to Morrowind (which I played last year, before anyone comes with the falacy of "nostalgia") many modern games seem like a ball-in-a-cup, a little toy to have some little fun with. In short: they make me sad, at least sometimes. Of course, it's not a rule: masterpieces are coming out every year, with complex ideas and outstanding executions, probably even more now than in the past thanks to the state of the industry (I don't have the empirical data to affirm anything, however; this only seems to be the case relying on my limited information); and yet I cannot help but love more--for the most part--older design for its lack of guidance to the player, superb craftsmanship in relatively limited scenarios, and downright courage to do anything with everything. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
kevnar why do you say so? I was born playing modern games and when I play daggerfall, it feels just as entertainig, fun and complex as skyrim or oblivion. I dont know its my personal opinion.
Twisted Peanuts
Actually, DF & MW were both WAY more complex than Oblivion or Skyrim. And still a lot of fun if you have the patches for DF and don't care for graphics.
Argh! I didn't know Daggerfall was procedural! I got stuck playing this game (fell into a water pit I could not climb out of) and I thought it glitched out on me, but now I know it can happen due to the level-maker fucking up. I should have just cheated.
Jonathan Szuhai Kinda why I get teleport asap. Possibly the most useful if not needed spell.
And always use a back up save slot for before you accept any side quest. Also if you use magic, the spells Water Walking and Water Breathing (Or a custom spell with both effects) are your friend
You could've used a levitate spell
hello! You're awesome! :D been watching almost every LGR videos, I enjoy the "Hey! I remember that!" and the "hey! I missed that :/" feel of the show :) super having fun with it man! Keep up the good work! :)
I was thinking of checking out the first two games and you have thoroughly convinced me to play Daggerfall. Thanks.
Daggerfall unity is really fun. It got me to play it a lot
HOLY MOTHER OF TALOS.. YOU SIR ARE AMAZING.
Seriously awesome narration.
I just smile, laugh, stunned, and amazed while watching this..
I am looking forward for more awesome video like this.
And thank u for showing us that Gorgeous shinny daggerfall cover and it's content.
I must subscribed.
Thank you, I hope you find more to enjoy in my channel!
Bounced on my boy’s elder scroll for hours to this. Your voice made *his* daggerfall
That box is simply amazing. Reminds me of dreams past... like boxes with appealing cover-art.
9:20 you're here for this
My only real complaint about Daggerfall is that the Quests often have a rather unforgiving timer.
get gud
lol
You mean the time limit? What, there's no problem with that. You're just not supposed to take 100 quests at the same time like you would in Skyrim. If you don't have time to do more quests because the last ones have a time limit, say "no" to the quest giver, as simple as that. And if you're planning on doing something else, do not take any quests at all. Only take quests when you're going to do them and you'll have no problems with the time limits at all.
In my opinion it's WAY better to have time limits on quests than like in Skyrim, that you take an urgent quest and then only complete it after 2 months of in-game time... that's just stupid. In Skyrim, nothing matters and everything you do is meaningless and has no consequences. You can't really even fail quests... there's just VERY few quests that you can fail, and even if you fail those, well, it doesn't really matter, there's no consequences.
*****
I'm more saying that Time Limits can be a pain in quests that involve dungeoneering, by virtue of dungeons being procedurally generated and labyrinthine.
*****
I haven't had a problem with that either. As soon as I get a quest, I travel to the dungeon as fast as possible, and save as soon as I get there in case I run out of time (though that has never happened to me)
I guess you have just had bad luck with the quests :-| I have not found the time limits "unforgiving" at all, I just like it very much that there's *some* kind of a time limit, but yeah, just a matter of an opinion I guess.
I played and beat this for the first time in 2016! I was just curious about earlier TES games and I fell in love. Used a wiki to help me as sort of a walkthrough guide to beat it. Worth it!
Man, I miss those days. I was maybe 8 or 9 when I was opening dos games, installing, & simply enjoying all the stuff in the box. Was great as well.
7:10 Give yourself higher agility in custom class and FOR GOD'S SAKE do NOT play it without using the mouse look! XD
Apparently the team that made Daggerfall is currently developing a (likely spiritual) successor to the game. They are supposed to be in the planning phase right now and there is no release date but I'm excited to see a game like this again
was this just a lie XD
@@user-ng2lk5wv4p Don't even remember where I read that, but considering two years later I've heard no word, am guessing it was (or shit just got majorly complicated)
@@dusty2080 rip
@@user-ng2lk5wv4p The Wayward Realms is still under development, it seems, it's just been delayed a lot
This was the first video of LGR I ever watched, after that I liked it so much I subscribed. That was nearly 1-2 years ago
Now Daggerfall... This is a game that still holds up. If you pop this sucker in, you're guaranteed to have a good time. Even more fun if you play Daggerfall Unity, as you get to actually see the landscape and elevation, you can climb up a mountain and look around to find the nearest town. Does it make travelling better? No. But it feels less like you're running at a wall of fog without moving.
You know what ISN'T fun? Fast travelling and immediately dying upon arrival because you have a disease that doesn't show up in any menu. Also, the omnipotent hive mind guards really break my immersion. *Halt!*
*Halt!* *Halt!*
*Halt!*
Like, dude, I *looked* in a *box* calm down.
I’m 27 years old and I cannot believe this game came out when I was 1
IMO, a Booty Call and a Call to Action are the same thing. 😁
Good lord, the level of puns is....it's fucking glorious. SUBSCRIBED!
That moment you realize that Southwest High Rock and Northwest Hammerfell are canonically smaller than Skyrim but you can fit about 1500 of 2011's Skyrims into 1996's Southwest High Rock and Northwest Hammerfell
That box is amazing 😮
It's funny during that 90's period games using real actors. I think they really thought it was gonna be something big in the future. Don't remember how many hours i play this game but it's in the 100's.
I would love to see you review Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut at some point, comparing it with the original and then giving an overall assessment at the end.
(spoiler-free comment, don't worry...) There was this magical moment when I was playing Elder Scrolls Daggerfall for the 1st time ever... I was a few hours into the game, nothing significant happened, and then I find this letter, written by someone that has been missing for a while, that his kidnapping was in fact (...spoilers, can't write here...) I still remember how MAD I was for what they did to this guy... And then the game leaves it as an open choice if you will help him or not... It's crazy, Daggerfall has like 6 or 7 story paths and you can end up with 4 or 5 different endings, I don't even remember the total amount, some of them overlap... Glorious game... Must play... 10 out of 10 standing ovation
Daggerfall! My favourite game of all time
www.reddit.com/r/dftfu/
"Bro to bro you should destroy it at all cost, knomean?" I loled haha
Dude, this oldies reviews are awesome, I would really enjoy a "Might and Magic" review (I personally love the "VII, for blood and honor", which was my first PC game)
Daggerfall is my favourite game ever. I don't think I've ever seen such a complete RPG: you can really do anything you want, join thousands of interesting factions, become an important member of them, and much more. I just can't stop playing it: from time to time I pick up a save game and do random stuff or start a new game and everytime is as fun as the first time. And of course the storyline, the cities, the factions, the divinities, everything is full of details, in classic Bethesda style: you can learn facts about the world and its inhabitants by reading books in libraries and guilds, talking to every NPC in towns (you can basically ask them whatever) and so on. This care for details is what makes The Elder Scrolls series the best RPG series ever and Bethesda the greatest game makers in the world. And among these five pearls, I couldn't think of a better chapter than Daggerfall; moreover, it requires less than 1GB and can be run on any computer nowadays. What else do you want? ;)
3:24 - "Finally the world will know the might of the axe-wielding, back-stabbing harpies known as the Really Stupid class."
4:14 - "The gist is that, after the events of Arena, Emperor Urethra Scrotum the 7th has called you over to his place in the middle of the night."
🤣🤣🤣
Everyone gangsta until they hear the magic sound, *" H A L T ! ! ! "*
HALT HALT HALT !!!!
As I recall from my brief stint with Daggerfall, there was a bug that teleported you to a dungeon's entrance. Useful one, that.
I really enjoy your reviews.
I had a love-hate relationship with this. Open world open world OPENWORLDFUCKYEAH!!! But then you just get lost somewhere, mainly in randomly generated dungeons that a) don't make any sense and b) just never end. I remember getting stuck on one but didn't dare to go back to any savegame because I had levelled up multiple times and collected so much loot I just couldn't quit.
After a while you would also lose track of all your side missions and other things you were involved with unless maybe you play it every day for hours and take tons of notes. And the bugs and glitches ... many times got/saw/did something amazing it was spoiled shortly after because you got stuck somehwere or forced to reload due to bugs.
Yet, I always came back to explore some more. What really hooked me was that time when I was bitten by a vampire and turned into a vampire myself, having to feed on blood and all. It changes everything you did before, they even have their own guild! In other games something like this could only happen to you as part of the main quest, but in Daggerfall it was just one of hundreds things that could happen to you randomly. I knew I was playing something unique and awesome right there, no matter how many glitches this thing had!
if i remember right there is an anchor in daggerfall that allowed you to teleport back to the anchor as long as you have enough mana. just plop an anchor at the entrance to a dungeon and you won't get stuck trying to find the exit ever again.
I always laugh at the "choose your gender to determine your nads" part. Yes, always. It means I've watched this DOS PC Game Review a couple of times now and don't regret it one bit.
A demo version of Daggerfall shipped in an issue of PC Gamer. The demo was so big it took up most of the cd. For the time, and years later Daggerfall was cutting edge. No other open world game came close to it for years.
This was my first Elder Scrolls game. Man this takes me BACK. 😭
