When I was about six years old, this game was the shit. It inspired my interests in Ancient History. I even built a little hut out of twigs that looked like the Stone Age houses when I was ten.
I would like to see an HD remake of this game, with a lot of the old bugs and problems worked out. Also the farming queue option from AoE II would be nice.
Basically, AoE II framework/mechanics with the Rise of Rome Setting/Aesthetic/Units etc.

I loved this game back in the day. I have the Gold edition and I used to love trying to make the most elaborate scenarios I could think off (if I remember right), one was a large map with lots of islands, only 4 at either ends of the map had gold and stone, alligators all over the place and you only start with 2 priests and two villagers and could only go one way and you had to find the town center and keep it defended as you couldn't build more, then defeat everyone.
I also used to love using the coinage cheat and getting loads of gold along with the quarry and woodstock for stone and wood and making loads of juggernaughts, helepolis, heavy catapults and cataphracts and waiting until my enemies had built up a big enough civilisation a lot to kill and destroy, and away I went with my super forces to destroy.

It came with the the first PC my family ever bought, which if I remember correctly had a Pentium II processor, and was the crux for fuelling my interest in strategy games.
I still own my original copy which is now 17 years old, it's fascinating to see how technology has advanced since the game's release. You are correct in saying it maybe doesn't hold up as well today however that wave of nostalgia I feel whenever I play it will always remain and as I said previously it's the main reason as to why the strategy genre is where my gaming interests mainly lie.

Love that you mentioned the trial version, as it was my first RTS experience and I'll definitely always remember the mission starting with the two priests. ^^
I do agree that AoE sadly hasn't stood up to time passing, but the memories of having our dad help carry our computer to a friend's house for LAN parties for this game definitely have. :D

The trial was amazing! I played the mission where you start with 2 priests so much. The red enemy AI was way to overpowered, though. I could'nt beat it.

I remember that scenario with two priests from demo-version. It was the first RTS scenario I played in my life, and I was seven years old. The priests instantly became my favourite units and "wololo" - the most admired and feared sound of all. Somehow the whole gameplay process seemed intuitive to me. Played it a lot until my dad gifted me the full version of Age of Empires. 11
By the way, you could dry the red player out of resources if you played long enough. Even slowely cut through the east woodline to create a land bridge to the enemy.

Age of Empires was my grandpa’s favourite game. He was a big computer fan, despite his age. I’ve always sucked completely at the game, but I’ve held onto his original copy with its box and instruction manual - both to remember him, and as a wonderful piece of gaming history.
Such a great game. I just wish I were better at it.

Wow this is nostalgic - my Dad used to play the crap out of this game 20 years ago when I was little! The 'OLOLO, AYOOOO' sound effects were so entertaining for me and my sister. Now I think of it, I have no idea how Dad navigated this when, being a newly-immigrated Korean, spoke elementary-level English. But he still enjoyed it a LOT, so it was obviously an amazing game. Thanks again for a great knowledgable review and memory trip :)

Damn, I didn't realise this game was so old! I was born in 1997 and I played this game a tonne as a kid. We had quite a few of them, including Age of Mythology. Even with Age of Mythology, there were a few issues. The campaign is pretty bad (some of them don't work and so are too easy/ hard while others are pretty much impossible to finish), the AI in your own custom maps was terrible, so if you had a really cool concept for one (like I did one where they had to cut their way out of a giant forest) the enemy just stood there and if you turned up the enemy level to the hardest in general gameplay it got nigh impossible to win, even when I'd been trying for months and had every click laid out. Watching stuff about the HD remakes it just seems they've tweaked them to better suit online gaming and specs, whereas I really want a brand new one with the same basis but improved AI and features to match modern capabilities :(

I came here to tell you my story. Of a 8 year old boy from Croatia. This is by far the fondest memory of my childhood. Having played only CnC, Dune 2 and a demo Red Alert 1 this game was a leap so high I couldn't believe it. The graphics so stunning, the animations so fluid, the effects so vivid, the sound track so awesome on my Sound Blaster AWE64!
So basically when I was 8 years old I recived a CD from the local PC magazine called Vidi. Back then Demos were basically my only games since I had no money and games were hella expensive back then by our standards. Piracy wasn't wide spread since CD still were not that cheap and CD burners were hella expensive. Plus my city was small.
I literally played the game day in day out for god knows how many hours. For god knows how long. The few scenarios of the demo so vivid in my memory I remember whats where exactly still today a good 18 years later. My friends and I loved the game so much we started timing the fastest runs, if you guys remember GOLD was super rare in the demo. So we had runs were we'd collect as much gold as possible. We also had runs to convert as many Non-Hittite units such as the upgraded archers and fishermen. So great was the importance of the game to me that even back then I went and bought a case for the CD of the demo. I still have it today.
After a while one of them a rich kids from my class got the original CD of the game. After a few weeks of playing he promised me I could take the CD home. So I did. Back then this was the first game I had gotten. I had no idea you couldn't play it without the CD! Anyways I literally skip jumped home giggling like a maniac, I never in my life remember begin so happy. Ever. I intalled it I played it for what seems to be 14 or more hours without a break. My mother was worried she had never seen me like that.
A day later I took the CD out and noticed I couldn't play without it. I was desperate. No internet, no adults that knew how to pirate, no nothing my knowledge of English non-existent...
After a good half hour of trying to figure it out I figured out you could still play if you left the game running but took out the CD in the main menu after it loaded. This was probably done so you could spawn play like in SC1. I had no idea at the time.
So for the first time in my life. The PC was on for 10 days straight in the games main menu. It never crashed pretty impressive too!
Later this knowledge let do my computer class in 2000 playing AoE for 4 hours every week on LAN huge 4v4 battles! Even the teacher played with us. It was incredible.
Well thats my story. I fucking love this game.
