I love any company that hires people like Panos. It shows when they do. They probably pay him really well, but it shows. This dude does his job every time. The product always makes you want it, but the software side which i doubt is his expertise is always lagging a bit. They just need to find themselves a guy like Panos who is just as passionate about software and they will be the new Apple of devices within a year or two.

And now a year later the Duo 2 has a pretty great camera but with a big Galaxy style hump.
Some reviewers vary on whether they think it compromises the design. Some don’t like it can’t like perfectly flat for note taking some example.
I’m torn as having a much better camera is a big plus, but they had a good camera in the Lumia 950 etc without much of a hump so feel they could reduce that back for version 3.
I bought a Duo 1 as a companion device alongside iPhone 13 mini and will consider a Duo 3 next year as hoping they’ll really nail it and get those bezels slimmed right down

8:45. Truth. That's what's most interesting to me. Using two screens instead of one big one is so much more productive to me. I'd MUCH rather have my two 27" screens on my desktop than 1 ultra wide monitor. Maybe I'm behind the times, but multitasking is so much easier, more intuitive with two screens IMO. I don't have this yet, but I'm seriously considering trading in my Note 9 for it.

IMO. Having one 1 ultra wide is more effective than having two 24 inch. and I personally enjoy it better. I have the had latter for years. That’s because there are quick tools on PC/MAC to snap and use that space effectively

@@tomlee45 I can see your and Jared's point. I might be behind a bit on the desktop side. However I still think I'd prefer this over a Fold for example. If for no other reason I can tent this thing. I can't imagine holding the unfolded Fold on a plane to watch a video or something. This seems more versatile in that regard. I think I'm gonna give it a try.

    • @tomswan3401

Yeah, he should have talked about what the duo does great and is supposed to do and what it does good enough. Like the surface pro vs ipad pro, for me surface pro is very good at productivity laptop and good enough tablet. But 0 tolerance for bugs like surface pro 4 ghosting display (when surface is getting hotter) problem or battery replacement problems (done by microsoft support).
Like duo good enough camera and gaming. Duo great at productivity apps and side by side use of apps, even single apps dividing on the 2 screens.

Microsoft Surface Duo is in fact headed in the most necessary direction in our time not just as a people but equally important for the environment we tend not to glance into.
Panos with his team at Microsoft managed to build a product that seamlessly meets the world's blueprint or rather, the opening footprint for the coming generations for several reasons:
    • major ceo|educator|etc productivity in a smallest of footprint
    • so little material used without a huge harmful expense of our environment
    • a appropriate approach for living minimalistic
When I saw Unbox Therapy review of MSD . . . certainly I was blown away and quickly felt the need to have one Duo according to my lifestyle including bizz orientation even though, I have Ultra 20G. This device is our futures necessitating factor.
The first ever device that doesn't want to take over your life or extend your arm's length. It is rather calming while deeply versatile.

I have so much respect to everyone who bought the Surface Duo despite compromises it has to make (such as camera, the stability of software). You are like the 30,000 phase 3 covid vaccine trial participants. You are like the janitor in NASA "Helping to put a human on the moon". In order to make an innovation scale, it needs iterations. Iteration needs real user data.
Also, about the Microsoft - Google collaboration. It is inspiring that they achieved this common ground. Panos, "I didn't make many friends when we started talking to Google. People didn't say 'Oh this totally makes sense' " lol..
This is one of the things that make me feel hopeful in 2020, a year that has seen too much division and blaming. Our world needs more unity, collaboration, and conviction to innovation.

Great interview. Almost all of the reviews I have watched on the duo completely miss the point of the phone. Instead they focus on the camera as if everyone is photographer and the buggy software (which will get better).
Apple fan boy here and have never had an android phone. I did however purchase the duo and am very much enjoying it. Even with its current short comings it is a great phone. Someone has finnaly provided something new, innovative, and useful.
As for the price I really don't see what all the complaining is about its not that far off a note 20 ultra. I'm sure the iPhone 12pro will cost just as much. Yes it's no $500 phone but it would be delusional to think it could be released at that. Last year's processor is more then enough who is actually maxing out these processors with day to day use. It's far more then enough. Could it of had more ram, yes but so far I have not seen any hiccups due to that.
One thing I would love to see added in the next release would be a curved display. Just like the Galaxy phones but only on the hinge side. This would greatly reduce the visual gap between screens. Hats off to Microsoft and I look forward to future iterations.

I suspect that if DUO gets traction and if other manufacturers follow their lead, that's exactly what will make a difference to people - having two thin, beautiful screens in their hands, doing more and doing it easier and faster.

At $1,399.00 I start leaning towards upgrading my laptop and keeping in the sub $500 phones, which even at the sub $500 level do more than I need it to given my laptops power and features. 1. In addition to a regular working day, working in the other end of the world for a multinational company that has teams calls at midnight, this is my Dream device as I can in parallel do something else in the second screen.
    2. Great you & Microsoft thinking about folding screen outside scenarios.
    3. A great first gen device for the senior managers/bosses, at this price point I would rather pick a more polished second gen device as I can’t afford to spend $2300+ in this part of the world for a device with many compromises.
And for you Lew - I don’t know if you are taking a neutral or anti-Apple stance, but I love it. But reality is these days your contemporaries have far higher views for “I”reasons we all know. So get back in the game without compromising your principles.

Software for the most part in the mobile platforms is not taking advantage of of the latest and greatest Apple or snapdragon chips expandable memory is not the future, cloud service and portable hard drive are, wireless charging isn't really wireless, there is always a cable. The Duo can video on 4k, edit and render that video faster than iPhone 11 pro. It all comes down to software. The only pain point on the Duo is the camera, it's very much trash by today's standards
