  • In this new video I do a deep dive on the story for the Suicide Squad: Amanda Waller one-shot special I wrote that was published in 2014. I go through the working process of coming up with the story, the importance of research, pitching, pacing, scripting, and more.

    Thanks again, Jim.
I really appreciate your breakdowns and walkthroughs of parts of the creative process. Your process of always coming back to the theme makes your work so much more impactful. I loved seeing how this was worked in through each step of the process.

Thanks! Having core character traits and themes exemplified in a story help make them more memorable. Without those in place it's way too easy for a story to just feel like a detached series of events that doesn't resonate.

@@JimZub Agreed, I am an author (mostly picture books) as well and in my work I always do 'focus revision' where I write out my theme in a short sentence and then go back through making sure everything supports it. It is amazing how the laser focus improves the work and makes sure the reader is left with impression you want.

This was great! I particularly enjoyed the way you broke down the story beats and explained how you pace out the story.
I also really appreciated the explanation of decompressed storytelling. I think people often assume that means that you are just telling a story over a longer amount of time, but it really comes down to HOW you are telling that story.
I like the mix of interviews and educational content that you are putting out. Between this and Scott Snyder's new course I think I should be able to make a comic soon 🙌🍻🔥

Great video. I’m sorry about Andre, Jim. We lose far too many people in the arts too young.
