Godzilla: Minus One was a great addition to the Japanese Godzilla franchise. I especially love how Godzilla moved around like an animatronic to make the movie feel classic.
yes, but suit actor instead of animatronic, godzilla is a kaiju tokusatsu franchise originally so that's where the inspiration comes from

Everyone: what a mess
Schaff: great ahh movie
Not everyone buddy, I and many more think they’re both great
I definitely liked The Boy and the Heron more than Howl's Moving Castle (I still like both though). HMC felt too obtuse and surreal with a message I didn't really connect with, but TBATH gripped me and stuck with me much harder, as someone who has dealt with loss and knows many others who have as well.
I've seen every ghibli movie and it's solidly middle of the pack. Not bad but nothing special
@@pilapila183 which one? Howls or Boy and the heron
I liked both of them a lot personally, Boy and the Heron WAY more than Howl’s, but they’re still both great.
Im glad Schaffrillas mentioned Nimona. I hope he will make a full analysis on why its Blue Sky's magnum opus soon
Everyone knows Blue Sky's true magnum opus was Ice Age 3
@@reallycantthinkofausername487 Yeh it was but Schaffrillas doesn't like it because he said of the penis jokes and bad pacing. Plus the whole subplot of Diego not being in the herd he said was also tedious. Also he forgot that the two mammoths were having a baby.
Edit: Those are the only negatives btw. Positives are that he likes Buck despite his writing, likes the lil subplot of Scrat falling in love with Scratette and the climax
I don't think it's fair to fully credit the film as a Blue Sky film at this point. They had a large hand in working on it, but Annapurna Animation and the team at DNEG Animation deserve just as much credit for being willing enough to revive this movie from the dead and provide a beautiful finished project
besides, it’s great, but can it really hold up against the behemoth that is Rio 2?
William talking about Godzilla Minus One for 11 minutes was the best part of the whole review, I could honestly listen to that dude talk about Godzilla for a whole hour. The most heartbreaking thing was finding out Schaff wasn't a Godzilla fan which I thought cause all the references in his videos but it was pry William's doing all along, I knew I could trust William once he referenced the Reiwa era and CORNMAN.
Reiwa Era is Shin, Minus One and the animes right?

I don’t cry in movies and I was sobbing.
As one of the many How Do You Live translators over the world, I really couldn't wait for your opinion on it, and man am I glad you got what the movie is all about. When I left the theatre premiere, I was hearing people talking about how they didn't really get it, and how they would rather wait for random CZcams people to explain the movie to them, while I was just walking by and thinking how clear it is in its message. Then again, I did have to watch it, like, three times before the premiere, so I had a bit of a headstart in that regard.
I'm just glad Miyazaki got to put all of his favorite things into a single picture, and I sincerely hope he breaks the curse of his family (apparently no one lived beyond 80 among his relatives?) and lives long enough to give us something else. Then again, even if he doesn't, a sendoff like this would be more than worthy of a man of his caliber.
I have a hunch that “How Do You Live/The Boy And The Heron” will gain a cult following in the years to follow. Initially, “Howl’s Moving Castle” also took a while for critics and audiences in the U.S. to finally warm up to the film. Although it wasn’t massively hated, many people were confused by the story, and some were turned off by the anti-war message (for context, the Iraq War was going on at the time, and 2004-2005 was a different political climate in the U.S. than it is today). Fast forward to the 2020’s, and “Howl’s Moving Castle” has gained a cult classic status. I think “How Do You Live” will go through the same fate, and possibly many more people will reevaluate the film especially after that inevitable day comes that Miyazaki will pass on.
It’s one of my favorite films of all time, and it deeply affected me on a personal level. It saddens me to hear that people don’t feel they understand it (my family in the theatre also). Its reflections on hope and the future, imagining and building art/a better world was breathtaking, and immediately clear, even though it took a lot of proceeding to explain it to others.
I also firmly believe he could have chosen to make a more accessible, less subtle film, and that it might have had more general appeal, but it wouldn’t have left half the impression on me, and I’m thankful he chose to make something so special
@@augustmericle6776 We are legitimately blessed to get How Do You Live in such form -- Miyazaki had no constraints with the direction because of his accumulated respect and reputation. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see an animation auteur's unbridled vision as a full feature film.
can we just get William interrupting every video to talk about Godzilla from now on?
Yes.
Can’t wait for the Kung fu panda 4 review to be interuppted by Godzilla final wars talk

Across the Spiderverse is a masterpiece in almost every way, and it sucks how much it's being absolutely snubbed at the Oscars this year. It's definitely a shoe-in for best animated feature, but really? It wasn't worthy of any other award? It deserves best original score far more than Dial of Destiny ever did. Daniel Pemberton deserves so much more recognition. The academy needs to recognize Animation as the fantastic, respectable medium it is.
Amen brother.
The music in both Spider-Verse movies is next level, and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.
Boy and the heron >
Its because its animated! And animation is OBVIOUSLY only for little children! Why would we respect something for children?
I hope the critics at the Oscars can actually respect the talent behind animation this year.
Thanks for being right. This is probably my favourite movie of all time, tied w the last wish.
i didnt mind bottoms having a liar reveal plot bc the sequence of avril lavigne's complicated as the coach crosses out "feminism" was worth all of it.
Seeing The Boy and the Heron in theaters was such a breathtaking experience for me.
Godzilla Minus One is to 2023 what Top Gun Maverick was to 2022. What an unexpected masterpiece. This movie 100% delivers. Even though Godzilla is actually much smaller, he is considerably more fearsome. That heat ray gave me chills!
Have people not seen Shin Godzilla? Much scarier Godzilla (and atomic breath), imo.
It was also kind of the Everything Everywhere All At Once of 2023 in at least one aspect. It was one of those movies that the people who knew about hoped it would do well, and I think even they were surprised by how good it was and how much of a hit it became. It's one of those movies with lofty ambitions, yet everything came together perfectly, and it took the world by storm by still doing what it needed to do and so much more. In fact, I think the only reason it wasn't as big of an awards-season hit as EEAAO is because it came out so late in the year. EEAAO benefitted by coming out in March/April, and was still being talked about by the end of the year. Had Minus One come out earlier in the year, I'm sure there'd be more awards-season buzz for it.
@@NounOzlosshin is not scarier- Shin is much more tragic and saddening. Minus induces fear through the music and intensity of each scene. Shin inspires awe and tugs at your heart once you learn more about the movie and lyrics. Both are amazing but one is scary and one is a medium to bash the government
You're literally everywhere, How?

It takes so much from dead poets society, but in the best way possible
holy shit THANKYOU for having a sensible take on the May December discourse. like yeah there were moments that were meant to satirize the shallowness of Juliane Moore's character, but that doesn't mean it was meant to be funny/campy.
In an NHK documentary about the years leading to The Boy And The Heron's production / BTS of the film, Miyazaki actually explains he modeled the boy after himself, and the granduncle is actually Isao Takahata, his mentor and colleague who sadly passed away. Finally, the Heron is inspired by his producer Suzuki. Their relationship is at the core of the film :)
I had towering expectations for The Boy and the Heron and was still blown away

Godzilla Minus One was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a movie theatre. It was phenomenal, and I feel sad for all the people who didn’t get to see it before it left theaters.
One detail that I only recently picked up was whenever the characters are talking about Godzilla, the monster’s footsteps are played very subtly on the theatre’s subwoofers, as if he’s approaching. Just amazing.
Also, it has my favorite film score. The best tracks in the movie are “Fear”, “Divine”, “Unscathed”, “Resolution”, and “Last”. Give these a listen, they’re great.
hard agree about the soundtrack! so incredible!
Elegy is also great
Add elegy and (if we’re counting non-original ones) the suite 1. Suite 1 needs much more recognition.
When I saw this movie as soon as I got in my car to go home I had to find the score on Spotify and listen to it! So damn good I loved this movie I saw it twice
Minus one was the only movie my theater clapped for. When the film ended everyone stood up and applauded the film. Endgame also had some applause but not as much as this.
OMG I was an extra in the Holdovers I'm so glad you loved it, I also got to meet Alexander.
I was actually in the cast of The Holdovers and have been a fan of you since i started watching CZcams! so glad you enjoyed it as much as you did!!
Everything you said about the Boy and the Heron was absolutely the best. My mom took me to see it and she cried her eyes out at the part where Mahito finds the book his mom left for him, because recently she lost her dad, my grandfather. My mom isnt into anime but she loved the movie, in case you needed to know how beautiful and amazing that movie was.
I added the Kenshi Yonezu song from the credits to my playlist, and even that song alone contains so much more emotion and beauty than entire movies I watched this year
Working in a movie theatre while godzilla minus one was showing honestly made me SO happy. i loved the movie, it's my favourite movie of the past years, and my second favourite movie ever. hearing the iconic theme blast while the movies were ending or while cleaning up after a showing and just feeling that final roar, fuuuuck i am so happy to be alive
I need to hear your N° 1
Which is number one?
Please tell
What I loved the most about Holdovers is how they put a spin on its tropes, making them jerks with bonafide hearts of gold. Paul may seem like a curmudgeonly snob, but in reality, he has a strong sense of morality that puts him at odds with the ethically questionable personnel at the school, and causes him to be closed minded. And Angus is shown to be in a lot of pain over his mom abandoning him, but it also helps him relate to other kids who have similar struggles. I absolutely loved their dynamic, where they would not be afraid to talk about how much of a pain in the ass they are toward each other, but are wholeheartedly willing to help each other when the chips are down.
There was also this scene in the near the end where Angus sneaks out on Paul and Paul was about to go on his speech on how Angus broke his trust, and I was like "here we go, the third act misunderstanding fallout scene", but NO! Angus confesses about his dad being alive, and it made me realize that the whole reason he wanted to go to Boston in the first place was to see his dad.
"The Wind Rises" is in my top 5 movies and to see Miyazaki make another last movie about how life is worth living despite all its darkness is weird?
...but "How do You Live" still has a lot new to offer, and most amazing, despite how difficult its subject matter, the movie is somehow incredibly fun.
"The Wind Rises" made me more grateful to be alive, "How do You Live" made me more excited to live.
The wind rises made me realize how grateful I was to survive. How do you live makes me excited to LIVE, to create, to imagine, and even to fail
@@augustmericle6776 I think that might a good summary.
Both seem to evoke an immense gratitude towards being alive despite all its hardships, but I feel the Wind Rises feels a lot more "despite its hardships" and How Do You Live makes life seem like a lot more fun.
I'm so glad someone else out there feels as I do about the boy and the heron - even if I cannot accept your opinion on Howl's Moving Castle. The Boy and The Heron stayed with me unlike any other film I have ever watched and I feel like it will stick with me for the rest of my life. Rarely if ever has a film ever been this well crafted enough, this well told, to really touch me as this film did.
Yeah the Howl section of his Ghibli movie ranking made me want to pull out my hair but I’m glad he recognized that The Boy and the Heron is peak.
I also feel it's Miyazaki's best film since Spirited Away, so I got really excited when I heard Schaff say the exact same thing.
For me, it’s stuck with me for all the wrong reasons. I came out confused and unsatisfied and didn’t really think much of it, despite its well made quality. But it’s stuck with me since I saw it in late January and it’s made me wanna watch it again when it comes to Netflix. I can only hope I like it better the next time I see it tho.
When I saw The Holdovers I was literally the only kid in the theater. The place was full of old people and everything smelled like chicken soup and Werther’s Original.

The Holdovers really deserved more attention. I learned about it from the previews when watching Oppenheimer in theaters, and because it was previewed at the biggest movie of the year, I guess I was expecting more of a turnout. It's easily one of my favorite Christmas movies now.
The Boy and the Heron is also one of the most thoughtful works of art I've ever seen, and it's an incredibly important message that more people need to hear, especially people who spend their entire life online.
When i watched it i thought it was a old movie made 30 years ago. It felt like a classic ive never seen before. I walked away thinking i watched a movie like forest gump for the first time. I only learned it was new in this video.

So happy to see The Holdovers as number one 🙏
Me and an old couple were the only ones in this movie and I felt as though it was going to be unappreciated. I’m glad it has gotten recognition from many people now and even Oscar nominations.
Not only that but Paul Giamatti has been one of my favorite actors since John Adams and I’m happy he’s getting more general recognition ❤
When I saw it, the theater I was in was almost full. And that just made the experience even better, even if I thought the movie was just good.
Disney refusing to take risks and make even a little bit of Wish's visuals 2D because "it's too hard" or "it's less marketable" or "it's more limiting than 3D" only for the movie to flop and then a 2D animated movie wins the Oscar while Wish doesn't even get nominated is just perfect.

Finally someone mentioned how Nimonas animation looked weird I think it was way to bright for me and the visuals really shine when it's more dark like in Nimona's hide out and in night
The irony is that Nimona, a cancelled Disney movie was Oscar nominated instead of Disney's Wish which was supposed to be a 100th year Celebration that turned out to be a nightmare 😂
Kind of took more issue with how a lot of the textures looked somewhat unfinished.
Still I enjoyed it well enough, and its animation does look better than Wish, so its got that going for it.

@@matthewhunter1193 considering the production hell that the movie went through, they probably are unfinished lmaooo
@@trixxart777 I mean from what I've heard (I didn't see Wish), Wish has a lot of references to other Disney animated movies in it, so I'm not sure if the movie itself was trying to stand on its own.
Also if you're mad that people are comparing other animated movies from this year to Wish, don't worry I'm sure in a year or two that'll die down. Remember when everyone was negatively comparing other animated movies to The Emoji Movie, and now no one talks about that? I'm sure the same thing will likely happen with Wish in due time.

Actually shocked that Schaff loved the boy and the heron after dissing howl's moving castle
It’s a bit of a whiplash, since both films are the types of films that need second or multiple viewings to grasp what the film is about. Though, I do respect Schaff’s opinion of “Howl’s Moving Castle” (even though I personally like the film and consider it my second favorite Ghibli film behind “Castle In The Sky”), and I did like “The Boy And The Heron” and I can see where he’s coming from listening to his passionate speech about the film. Seeing how James experienced loss not too long ago, the film probably struck a chord with him.
Hearing Overcooked music in the background of videos always makes me happy, even when the majority of the time they probably just found a random song and played it

Yeah, 2023 has been pretty amazing in terms of movies. We didn't get a lot of _animated_ movies specifically, but whatever we got was great too, Nimona and your two entries in the top 15 were great and I'm glad that Wish didn't get a single recognition in the best picture, it's the kind of movie that deserves to never be talked about again.

This statement isn't even true, he talked about D&D for 17 seconds, and Nimona for about 30 seconds. Visually: utterly beautiful. had scenes inspired by classic art (which is something I studied so I recognized it in theatres) by Böcklin (The Isle of the Dead and The Island of LIfe) and Millet (general light usage and pastoral scenes). Great use of different styles to indicate different states of mind. Fluid movement.
Musically: Not my favorite, but it had its moments. The use of silence and space was very striking.
Sound Design: gorgeous. A lot of care was taken in all of the natural, magical, and human sounds.
Symbolism: There's a lot to unpack--- it helped that I read up on some Japanese literary symbolism, and have an understanding of Western art symbolism.
Plot: Difficult to ascertain (I've also only seen it once so I won't be perfect).
Mahito is deeply distressed by the loss of his mother, whether he's willing to emote it or not. So depressed, in fact, that he would rather isolate himself than be supported for fear of hurting others. And he so wants isolation that he is willing to harm himself deeply to get it. He wants to be in his own world, not forced into loving his "new mom," or into doing schoolwork, or whatever. But through the adventures he goes on, he sees that the past version of his mom is willing to go through any kind of pain for the joy of having a son like him, and he eventually sees that he *can* move past his trauma and keep living and even be happy.
He is constantly waiting for the Heron to guide him places at the beginning of the adventure, unwilling to take initiative or control in his life. Nor is he willing to complete any mundane duty anymore. But there is a point he comes to understand that not only does he need to take initiative, he *wants* to. When his uncle offers him the blocks, he realizes that not only would he taint the blocks, but he doesn't want them anyway. He needs to return to the real world, face his situation, and bring back his dad's new wife. And by the end, he willingly shows her affection.
Amazing seeing Schaff talk about Godzilla, I loved Minus One and William's part is excellent!
17:15 Hey! Air was a great movie. Despite the premise of "how the the Air Jordans were made", it doesn't feel like a commercial for these shoes. It actually focuses on the people that were involved. Heck, it honestly felt like Nike didn't have much to do with the making of the film
I went to see Oppenheimer 6 times in theaters just to soak all the greatness up. Enjoyed it more every time, truly a movie of the ages
Unfortunately I was able to see it 3 times in theater but what is worse I was not able to see it in IMAX
I’m glad this time the timestamps had the numbers and the video thumbnail instead of them showing which show/movie/game is in place number 4
Oh William I love you man, you made 25% of this video about godzilla, thank you so humbly. Also which godzilla movie in your opinion is the most entertaining and batshit insane, like for me its the original king kong vs godzilla. However I have to say I have not seen king ghidorah which I have heard is also insane
I legitimately started to tear up when you announced you top film of the year. I watched it with my family this Christmas and it was such a wonderful experience; I'm so glad to see it getting the love it deserves!
Thank you William for giving a shout out to the human characters in the Godzilla movies , Miki is one of my favorite aspects of the franchise
the little "sephiriath :)" made me smile
glad i could make ya smile =v=
THE HOLDOVERS IS A BLOODY MASTERPIECE AND DAMN I DID NOT EXPECT IT TO RESONATE WITH ME SO MUCH - I FREAKING LOVE IT
I agree with you that it is simple, that is a part of its charm...Sometimes you need something so simple on paper to really make something so wonderfully heartwarming and devastating. I remember seeing the trailer and I was intrigued but I did not expect to get attached to the story of the film so much...
I know this is just a ranking video and probably comes nowhere near the amount of time you spend on some of your larger projects but I want to say this was a really great video, rankings and honourable mentions were great, hearing about some of the previous works like with Spider-Man and especially seeing a bit of behind the scenes channel stuff (mainly Godzilla stuff) made it such an enjoyable watch :) keep up the great work everyone 👍
I don’t know much about Godzilla and don’t have much interest in the franchise but William’s 11 minute section talking about minus one aswell as some history about Godzilla was really entertaining, he should hijack random moments in these videos more often
Oh and of course I really liked the video itself your rankings are always a great watch
A 11 minute Godzilla segment, thank you!
Brother, you summed up everything I love about the Boy and the Heron, or Kimi Tachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka (How Do You Live), and I love you for it!!! What an incredible culmination of Miyazaki's career🥲
"Past lives is a movie about reconnecting with someone who meant the world to you when you were younger."
Fuck... That line made me freeze. I had to pause the video for a minute because just thinking about that scenario, having that thought be forced from someone other than myself... it hurts. I'd say I'd love to watch this movie one day, but I know it's going to be painful as all hell if I do.
It's an absolutely incredible movie, easily one of the best of the year
YYYOOOOOO!!!!!!! I saw Hundreds of Beavers at the Omaha Film Festival!!! The amount of work that crew put into the making of that movie must have been INSANE! I've never seen one of your videos before, but I look forward to your future HoB video.

I love this list and the fact that as a huge Godzilla fan I can listen to someone, who knows a lot about Godzilla like me... in a Schaffrillas video.
DUDE MOANA 2!!!!!!
The boy and the heron is amazing and Ive waited the review for so long!!! I can’t believe people dislike it
I’m so happy that you gave How Do You Live the praise it deserves! It’s easily one of the best films of 2023 and yet so few people are talking about it.
You uploaded on my birthday, I'm considering this as a birthday present 🎁. Last year was the year I saw the most movies in the cinemas, it was great
Thanks for keeping that godzilla rant in, it was appreciated.
That's hilarious that you interpreted the Parakeet King as Goro in Boy and the Heron. I saw one reviewer speculate that actually Mahito was Goro's stand-in but that just drives home one of the things I loved most about the movie was how much of it was abstract and open to interpretation.
The Holdovers is everything man. I laughed, I cried, it moved me, Bob!
I 1000% agree with the holdovers... im not a big movie buff but man I loved it the entire way through and was hoping it got number 1. It's just an enjoyable film that is touching and has good developed characters that I just loved.
Boy and the Heron wins the OSCAR!
I have come to present an anime director recommendation. Masaaki Yuasa. The only major comparison to Miyazaki is that they both have such a distinctive vision in all their works that their movies stand out amongst the rest. Inu Oh for example might be my favorite anime movie of all time.
You made a lot of solid points about The Boy and the Heron. I was definitely surprised that you put it at #2 because I originally thought it wasn’t a well rounded film. I now realize it’s so true that it’s a film that’s meant to make you feel rather than think. When I first watched it in theaters I was absolutely blown away by the stunning artwork and music. I was analyzing every scene with my eyes and ears. I would even say that it’s Miyazaki’s most magnificent film animation wise. It’s true the story was secondary, but that’s ok. It’s Miyazaki’s penultimate or final film and I will remember it for as long as I live.
The Boy and the Heron was easily my favorite movie of 2023, and I can't think of a better movie to (possibly) conclude Miyazaki's career.
YES I WAS WAITING FOR THE BOY AND THE HERON REVIEW
Great video from both Schaff and William! I'm also on the side of not a huge fan of minus color version of minus one. I'm not sure if it's how they edited the film or if it was just trick of the eye, but I swear you can glimpse some frames of color in the minus color cut. My brother and I have seen both versions and swear that they might've used a bad black and white filter over the original film.
Hey editor, jokes on you, I've seen both the first Godzilla movie AND Shin Godzilla! (BTW, Schaff if you're reading this, watch Shin Godzilla, it was directed by Hideaki Anno)
8:10
yo, sick, Baten Kaitos music. That game deserves more recognition
Fun fact: my coworker is an extra in The Holdovers and I wouldn't have learned about it any other way. I'm so proud for him :)
FR I absolutely loved The Holdovers and I don’t know if a movie had ever had such an impact on me, but I walked out if that theatre a different person than who I was when I walked in
The human sections in minus one is actually the best in all the movies, hope they keep it up
W for giving an honorable mention to TMNT Mutant Mayhem and Nimona!
I'M GLAD SOMEONE GETS THE BOY AND THE HERON
I was close to tears at the end, and when I looked around the theatre, everyone was just disturbed and confused 😐
Fun fact: I disliked Yorgos Lanthimos’s previous movies like The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer. Don’t get me wrong, I still respect them for what they are and think they’re well-made movies, but I just felt they were so depressing and idiosyncratic that I just never wanted to view them again. Then comes Poor Things, which is as weird and messed up as those films, but with Bella mentally being a child, it makes the film feel so much more hopeful and adventurous than any of his prior films did. Coupled with the fact that it’s a legitimately amazing movie, and it not only made someone like me a Lanthimos fan, but also shot up to my #2 movie of the year despite not seeing until the end of December. With it only being topped by Oppenheimer. And while I’d rank the films in this list far differently, I’m at least glad to see a majority of my own favorite 2023 films here as well.👌🏽
