Beautiful wife found the best sign to camp behind I've ever seen in my life. I headed out to camp behind the welcome to Nanaimo sign and set up my small bivy tent for a night of camping. It was a blast as always, and a very good camping test for the tent.
The tent I'm using is a GearTop 1 Person tent, I only have the Canadian amazon link (I'm not sure how to find the US one or international) but here it is if anyone is interested.

Watching you running across the road like a sasquatch in the dark with a rice cooker made me have a laughing fit. You never let us down
Maybe some of the Bigfoot sightings are just stealth campers? 😅
Agreed. That was hilarious.
I really liked that too lol
There's going to be Steve sightings for a couple hundred years now.

Steve “lawless” Wallis running with leftovers through the woods, plugging rice cookers into flagpoles, and almost setting himself on fire. All with a completely calm demeanor, this dude is a rockstar.
Hes a truly hardened criminal. can you immagine the shear callousness needed to steal power from the city!!!
By-lawless
Lol
It comforts me knowing that somewhere out there in the woods or under the highway Steve is camping

It has to be hard to find wives who are cool with it.. rest in peace to the lady.
You bring back memories of me on the road in the 70s and 80s in the Welsh mountains, cooked a meal on the side of the road on an open fire and a police officer drove past, stopped and came over to me and told me to put the fire out, I explained that I wasn't breaking any laws and was, in fact, perfectly allowed to feed myself on the public highway, he radioed back to his superior who told him I was correct, he then made sure I was ok, asked if I needed anything and then wished me all the best and drove off with a smile. I lived rough for over 6 months but loved every minute of it. Thanks for your videos 🙂 x
This might sound stupid but I genuinely miss being homeless, it's the only time I've ever felt alive and at peace with life,
Obviously it's not so easy to make the decision to just quit society and be homeless by choice despite how much my heart yearns for it and I hate that

@@thehypest6118 it doesn't sound stupid. Humans were hunter gatherers once. Maybe that instinct made you feel at ease?

I like to envision Canada as one small town where everyone knows everyone else. You're pretending to be sneaky but everyone sees you - and they're like "oh look it's Steve again... Camping behind a sign thinking he's being sneaky!"
Lmao!!!!
Police see Steve trying to nonchalantly carry a rice cooker across a road and think "I'll have to make sure to watch that episode to see whet he was cooking..."
Nice: trying to envision a country as a whole different level of community (a town) than it actually is.
@@BoyBlunder66: A "joke" but he doesn't know the difference between a country and a town?

How many others yelled "Don't light it!" when we heard that huge gush of butane escape from the stove? 😂
Anyone but Steve would have edited that out. Gotta love Steve for being so real!
Definitely one of my favorite reasons for watching him. He's a genuine guy.
I think Steve took some inspiration from ElectroBOOM there

What's that Glow behind the sign. LOL God I loved that.....
Hell, I jump when the darn thing lite up like flame thrower, i bet the Bewitched neighbors Gladys and Abner Kravitz loved watching from there windows as well...Abner theirs some crazy creature throwing fireball behind the sigh.... I think he stole someone's rice cooker for a cauldron.
Steve is making better meals behind a sign than I am on a Friday night at home ahah
Me too. I ate a can of pinto beans while watching him talking about making a roux behind a sign.
He is truly an inspiration
he has honestly inspired me to make better food at home bc i literally just think "if steve can make this while camping... i can make it at home.
Steve, you are such a legend. If you just woke up, and heard a remix of some of the stuff he says, you would think he is from another planet. "It's almost twilight here, so i'll just sneak over and grab that rice cooker and see if we have power in the flag pole." Literal comedy genius hiding in plain sight.
The deadpan way he says it just makes things even better
Right. That is the first time anyone in history has ever put that string of words together in that particular order. haha
"where's wallis" is such a great name for stealth camping.

Hey Steve, Steve here as well
Been watching a few episodes man.
I guess I started stealth camping a few years after I started bike tripping. At first it was just regular campgrounds and provincial parks but then, by about 1977 I started venturing into random woods. Almost 50 years later I'd say I'm a seasoned expert. I watch your dinner making scenes with great fondness for years of amazing feasts in secret places. I love the coffee in the morning even more than dinner.
One inspiration to stealth camping by bicycle was the book, Bike Tripping, by a Cuthbertson, out of ten-speed press, which went on to be a pretty hip publisher. He suggested camping at cemeteries. Nobody writes youth literature like that anymore. So I've become a bit of an expert in cemetery camping. Often, just immediately behind a cemetery there's a fence, a tree line, maybe some rocks. Usually great neutral ground where nobody goes.
I like communication towers also. There's usually a fence around them so you go far side of the fence. Often handy bush and trees, and often a fence post to string the hammock.
Love railroad sides, little low spots beside the tracks, often again with a fence. I have had a whole closed campground on Lake Superior all to myself. I've camouflaged myself as wrapped firewood beside a park building. I've hidden in the groupings of landscaped conifers at tourist information centres in Quebec. Countless picnic shelters, hydro properties, behind dumpsters at industrial parks, liminal shrubland in parks, on gas station properties, beside monuments, like the Terry Fox monument in Thunder Bay. That night was special. East of Sudbury we slept in Mennonite built sheds that were arranged for sale in a large grouping. My brother took one shack and I took another, bike and everything.
I love stealth camping. It's a real rush. And it makes bike tripping super cheap, when you consider that it basically reduces the cost of living on the road, getting in great shape and losing weight and seeing beautiful parts of the world down to groceries and booze while on the road. Without the cost of accommodation, a cyclist on the road can live on $20 per day, assuming you're carrying staples like coffee, oats, dry soup mix, etc on your bike. You can lounge at restaurant breakfasts, buy fresh fruit for lunch and a couple cans of beer for supper. Well, maybe $30 per day. It depends. But it's definitely the cheapest way to go free for a while. I've done months on the road many times, crossed Canada many times. It's a subculture of life that I love and know and I know that there are many out there who adventure like this.
Onward, comrades!
Dam I gotta get myself a bike
Wow

The cracking of the beer can is the best part of his videos. I've been to Victoria several times. It's worth the ride over, on the Canadian ferry, just to see it. What a lucky guy to have the natural beauty so close.
No matter how popular this man has become, the tone of his videos never changed. Just great content.
Steve, have you thought about turning the bivy rainfly inside out? the gray with shadows may look closer to the concrete and the waterproofing should work just as well
As someone who has made many boundary waters trips I have come to be fascinated by your adventures. I have slept in a hammock, back packing tent, and have been run out of a campsite by a bear. That stove bit was truly funny
I laughed out loud and was still laughing when he dropped the broccoli picked it up *shook it off* and tossed it in the pot. That started up a whole 'nother round of laughter. Love Steve's channel!
Same man. He would have dropped a few notches if he threw those away.

Make sure the little notch on the butane canister is lined up properly and not leaking before ignition. I’ve been using those types of stoves for 15 years or more and never had an issue. Stay safe Steve.

Did you happen to be working at a prison? Lol
The last bit about the couple watching you stumble out of woods with a backpack and a pot of leftovers had me 😂😂😂 Great video as always Steve!!
Nobody wants a serial camper around, I guess
It's the pot of leftovers that is suspicious. 😱
I'll bet they would recognize you, Steve if they got a closer look and would offer you breakfast! ❤ Do you think so?
At 8:36 I found a classic type of "Steve-ism: "I just don't know how I would explain walking into the woods with a rice cooker." 😂
Ah, the stove blowout. Anyone who says they've never had that happen to them hasn't spent enough time camping. Great video, as always.
untrue call: i was a vagrant for years &'ve done lots more stealth camping on & off the freights, plus lotsa urban stealthing, &'ve never had a stove blow on me because of never having used a stove but always found a place to cook on a fire or just made sandwiches. 'course, i've had a few campfires go into the "uh-oh!" stage, thankfully never beyond ability to get control over...
Never had a blowout - that would be hard to achieve with unpressurized fuel... A toppled alcohol stove makes for an excellent way to wake you up in the morning, though. Beats any amount of caffeine for sure!
I found your videos Randomly. I was not searching for "camping on roundabouts" etc. And I am really fascinated, what kind of hobbies exist in the world. 😀
It's cool to see how you enjoy it and you do it with passion. I wish you all the best. Thanks für the videos.
Steve, I always enjoy your nervous "I don't want to get caught" casual dry humor.
Apart from the...parking your car in front of a house that you are visible from, that was a good stealth camp.
“Nothing to see here”, as he stumbles out from behind the sign carrying a pot of leftovers.....😂😂😂😂😂
Nothing to see here just going for a walk. With my 50 pound backpack and pot of food.
Steve cooks better behind a sign with a nearly exploding camp stove than I do in a full kitchen.... squeezing lemons, making a roux. Apparently I need more camping to improve my culinary skills.
@HKJ Gordon Ramsay makes excellent grilled cheese sandwiches over and open fire as well.
CZcams algorithm knows me better than I know myself. They recommended this to me one day and I have never seen anything like this before I don't even watch camping stuff.... But boy oh boy do I look forward to every hunkering down! Much love Steve! Keep it up! Love this channel so much

Exactly what I needed today. You're like the Bob Ross of stealth camping, only way more entertaining. You rock!
Just a small tip. In pretty much any bag I have (hiking, work, overnight) I like to keep a few salt, pepper, sugar, & single serving tea packets from fast food joints in a small ziploc for occasions like that. Weighs next to nothing and doesn't take up any appreciable space. Everything in the baggie does end up smelling like pepper but so far has never affected the taste.
Secondary tip. The vinegar packets usually leak after a while and ketchup tends to get squashed so they make a poor addition, lol.

That welcome sign (the one Steve camped behind) was pretty controversial at the time it was built. Some people felt it was an extravagant expense for a town that has a lot of pressing problems to take care of. Of course, Nanaimo gonna Nanaimo so the flashy sign got built, Nanaimo got to pretend it was a Big Boy City and now, after all these years, it looks like it was all worth it for the Steve Wallis stealth camp!

Hey Steve, I love your adventures! Just watched this vid... and I have commentary... My first reaction is, I am no Canadian but I live close to the border and I'm pretty good at getting out of trouble. Here are some suggestions based on strategic planning: When walking through the woods with a high end camera and a comfy chair, think, "I want to get some great photos of birds." Similarly, camping behind a road sign and even cooking dinner there, have a reason... such as, set up a slow exposure of the road. Maybe you want to get an all-night traffic photo but don't want to leave your equipment out there alone. If neighbors actually approach you, be honest within the motto of one controversial American arts collective; "Trust me. I'm an artist." If you believe you need to be there, in my experience, others will be less likely to question your motives.
Oh, that's brilliant! thanks for the idea! I'm going to put that in my list of excuses.
Even better is that Steve has "collaborated" with other artists who do cool camera stuff... in caves.
Good idea, but I honestly think the way Steve comes across, if he actually did get busted, with nerves and how suspicious he acts, not to mention, being a law-abiding citizen; I think the truth would come out. haha
Been watching for a while finally come across this! This is my hometown! I wish I could partake in one of your adventures! Your videos are awesome! They always teach me little tricks for camping.
Nanaimo, and rain !!!!!!! Lots of spots around Parksville to, great videos
This def makes the Top 10 Signs to Camp Behind list of 2022! Its awesome your wife found this spot lol! She's a great collaborator in your camping adventures!
Would love a watch mojo video of the top 10 signs to stealth behind 🤣
This was a hilarious episode! I'm sorry, but the scene where you just about blew yourself up had me laughing so hard, I accidentally woke my husband up from a deep sleep!! Love all of your videos! I look forward to seeing them every week! Much love from OHio!! ❤
Its so calming. I always watch your videos every night before going to bed.
It has been quite a while since I was on 'the Island' but I have to tell you that I'll never look at that Welcome to Nanaimo sign the same way ever again. Thanks Steve. You never fail to make me smile.
I drive past that sign a couple times a week. If you knew a little more about Nanaimo you would realize it’s quite a stealth camping town. I’m surprised you didn’t come back to someone in your tent. Favourite episode, thank you for bringing your show to our town.
If he came back to find someone in his spot, I'd say it's a two-fer-one roadside special episode. Lol
That's pretty cool 👍
"Right on ... rice cooker." Another priceless moment, Steve! Thanks to you and Beautiful Wife for always thinking of us.
Howdy, first time watching your videos. Being from Vancouver, thank you for showing others what Canada has to offer everyone!
That is where I grew up that street you were on! So cool, thanks Steve!
Steve sneaks out to see how hidden he is, just to step on the loudest rocks on the planet.
Steve Wallis running across a highway with a pot of leftovers=priceless
Doing a binge watch of a bunch of your videos. This one had me laughing, especially the rice cooker transporting back and forth, what a hoot!!!
I just discovered your videos, I love camping and adventures so you got my attention :)
I also want to send my dearest condolences for your sweet wife's passing, my prayers are with you and your family
Never thought I'd hear stealth camping called "a safe and legal thrill"...
I think he may have meant the thrill of subscribing.
