    For vehicles that did not come with a hitch but have had one added, having a wiring harness is essential so you can safely tow a trailer. Be careful to only tow trailers and loads appropriate for your vehicle. A car, minivan, or small SUV will have very different towing capacities from a large truck. This video demonstrates on a 2016 Toyota Sienna. Wiring will be similar for many other vehicles.

    This installation took several hours between removing trim panels, fishing wire through hidden spots, etc. One area that time could be saved is not figuring out which existing vehicle wires work the brakes and turn signals. That would avoid needing to splice wires. Rather, there are kits available that have plugs already configured specific for your vehicle and essentially avoid the splice. Check out the CURT brand kits - it costs a bit extra, but saves quite a bit of time.
