The defense attorney for the mother of the Oxford shooter makes her closing argument Friday at the mother's involuntary manslaughter trial. Here is their full statement.
@mrs.toddmaynard7743 yeahhhh I think especially know as her being a lawyer she could have been a lot more professional with that closing argument if that's what they want to call it!
Right! I commented on another video that she is like a parody of an attorney on an SNL skit. 🤡 I get secondhand embarrassment watching her. I wouldn’t want her representing me in a jaywalking case. The fact that the defendant took the stand just added a bit more to the clown show.
I think that she was trying to show that if we put ourselves in Jennifer’s shoes we might see things differently. And to show alliance with her client.
Exactly! It was so difficult to listen to. I mean Darrell Brooks was one thing, but he had zero experience as a lawyer! This lady, on the other hand has completed her law degree lol All of her fight and tantrums she's shown throughout this trial has gone out the window after this closing IMO..
Imagine being the fourth kid and in your moms most infamous trial she admits you were an accident on public tv just to help a neglectful shooters mother 😭😭 So glad this lawyer taught me what types of rhetoric to avoid and how not to act in a courtroom, as someone on track to go to law school in a few short years this is incredibly educational and I thank you.
Not only that, imagine being the kid who likes skate parks she hates and wishes she never had to go to...or how she doesn't answer their calls bc she doesn't feel like getting them anything from McDonald's (but she's gonna get something for herself)...or being the daughter she called "a psycho" to her husband bc she's saying no one sat w her at lunch. This woman could have used maybe a couple examples that didn't have to basically turn into talking sh*t about her own kids. Jesus. She's NUTS. I know you're reading this, Shannon: You're nuts.
10:20 this woman has spent the last 7 minutes defending her reputation, while also claiming her 4th child was an accident…. on live tv… is this woman on drugs? Seriously.
I disagree, she’s trying to point out that anyone of us could be in the Crumley’s position. I do not care for the Crumley’s at all, however he’s had NO history of mental illness. She was getting him counseling.
@@redrose41000when ? After he killed 4 people? She should have listened when he told her Mom I love you. That was a red flag. She ignored it. The red flags were there earlier but she ignored it. She bought him a gun instead of having a real good conversation. Did she really thought this was helping him?
Her comments about the lack of evidence of mental health concerns, thats because SHE DIDNT CARE enough to spend quality time with him to understand his struggles.
This case leads me to ponder: Perhaps if parents are on the line for culpability, we would have a better society. Actions would be taken to cover all tracks. When you do everything you can and beyond, it shows. When you don’t, well, here you have it!😞
My parents were all over me for fear they might look bad in the community. I dare not embarrass them and I knew it. Mom went through my notebooks, journals, etc. (No phones back then) and we were the feral children of the world but all my friends parents were the same.
Jennifer Crumbley lied when she described herself as a helicopter parent. In fact, she is the opposite. She was a self involved, detached, neglectful, indifferent mother who didn’t take action when her son said he needed psychological help. Her expensive hobbies and affairs took up her time. Not her son. When presented with direct evidence in the drawing at school, that her son was crying out for help and full of murderous thoughts, she acted like the school was wasting her time. On the stand, Jennifer played a game of semantics, was evasive, deceitful, and deeply unlikeable. But is she guilty? Yes. She and her loser husband could’ve prevented the mass shooting had they taken action when their son pleaded for help. Hearing voices? THAT didn’t concern either one of those selfish fools Ethan had for parents. But they laughed at him. They let him fend for himself as they had done so many times before. Guilty.
Watch the entire trial. You might change your mind. Even the school officials didn’t thing there was any danger. Trust me when I say that unless you watch the entire trial, there is a mountain of misinformation from the prosecution side. Listen to the entire defense closing argument.
You don’t want to start jailing people for being crappy parents when no actual physical neglect is involved…that’s a slippery slope if ever there was one. The only possible crime is did they secure the gun-anything else brought up at this trial is white noise as far as CRIMINAL offenses. That does not, however, negate her civil liability (nor the school’s for that matter)
@@user-sf5pb8vg6p -I have watched entire trial. And the defense’s closing argument was ridiculous. All about the attorney being a tactless, strange mother herself. Trying too hard to normalize Jennifer’s disconnect with Ethan, her unresponsiveness. It was weird as hell that the attorney said she ignored her kids calling her as she drives home from work, because she knows what they want: cokes from McDonald’s. She goes to McDonald’s but gets a Coke ONLY for herself!! Selfish. And stupid for sharing that. That, and all her other unflattering portrayals of her as a mother was a pathetic defense. Jennifer Crumbley is a bad mother.
@@dionegbama -you’ve missed the entire point. And hell yeah I want parents jailed when they ignore very clear evidence that their child is disturbed AND all they do is buy that child a gun, and that kid kills others. Those irresponsible Crumbley parents could have prevented other parents children from being killed or injured.
Yet this worthless judge allows it!!! I was a paralegal for over 20yrs and my late brother was a prosecutor and I can honestly say I’ve NEVER seen a defense attorney get away with all the crap this worthless judge allowed her to get away with!! This NEVER would’ve flown in ANY of the courts/judges I’ve worked with!! I’m shocked!!
I understand she can talk about social media, despite the jury not being allowed to view any, however why even bring this up? These openings and closings go on long enough... Personally, I'd expect a pro se defendant to bring social media up, but not an attorney who has represented other high case trials previously. Just my opinion as a 'keyboard warrior with no legal experience ' though lol
Haha it's so obvious she's been following the comments on her role in this trial.. Her comment about viewers at home watching shouldn't be mentioned to the jury as they're clearly not supposed to be looking up the trial anyway..
Social media really has the defense lawyer in her feels. This closing is also extremely odd with the attorney admitting to also being a disengaged lazy parent who just gave that 4th child some emotional damage.
I’m almost embarrassed for her!!! Worst defense attorney I’ve ever seen and I was a paralegal for 20yrs and my late brother was a prosecuting attorney!! I’ve also never seen a more worthless judge who let a defense lawyer get away with running their court room!!
BUT in practice they don't, Cos the reality of having a teenager in your house is that YOU are working, YOU are cooking dinner, YOU are also taking care of a million other things and YOU have to check their homework and provide for them a decent education. AND SO the hours and hours and hours of text messages that your kid is sending and receiving are impossible to go thru. There are a million cases like this where kids are getting into trouble at school or out of school and their parents don't know about it until after the fact. The reality is not like what you dream it to be.

I don’t always know what’s going on in all four of my kids lives but I do know what’s going on in their hearts! When I see a red flag, I go find out what’s biting! I DON’T reward them with a more powerful weapon!
I didn’t know this until today but this is the same woman that defended Larry Nasser. I looked at her website and she specializes in sexual misconduct charges so idk why she took this case and it makes sense as to why she is so out of her element!!!
When the kid asked for help and they didn't listen. They gave him permission to do what he said he was going to do. By law even when a parent buys a gun the son was not of legal age to own a gun period. The difference between this shooting and others most either stole weapon or the parents had it under lockdown but found away to get it. This case they handed the gun to him.. my prayers to the families. So sorry.
She is litterally defending herself against the internet and telling the jury what is being said on the internet. Doesn't the jury have clear instructions not to look at news or the internet pertaining to the case?
Does this Defense realise how absolutely embarrassing this is? This is the worst closing statement. She's making it all about herself. Even if she had a good point about certain things it's lost on the fact that she talked all about herself, talked about embarrassing things, made herself sound like a complete wack job. 🙄😬
She doesn't like having kids. Well at least the youngest oopsie baby #4. Poor kids that home has to suck. I bet their birthday parties are about her too.
@@letsgobrandon4504 Laughing and smiling at what a lawyer is saying at a trial about the brutal murder of four children, is exactly what she wanted you to do. She got into the heads of parents everywhere. She took the focus off the shooting and put the spotlight on parent's fear of going to jail for their child murdering children with the gun they bought him. From your comment, it looks like her strategy worked.
For those saying she shouldnt be held accountable, she provided him with the gun (tools) to commit murder. He had signs of homicide and suicide and she didn't say, "Hmm, maybe I should ensure the gun is secure". Negligence at its finest that caused the death of 4 teenagers and trauma to so many more. She should be held accountable.
Yeah there's more going on here. I think more than anything she's guilty of child neglect. Manslaughter while I think it's good to start making an example of this and parents probably is a little much. Maybe gross negligence resulting in bodily harm might be better. The thing is there's more to this with the school and how they recommended he stay at school and all of that. It might be that the school wasn't exactly out of line, they just happened to be wrong and this is what happened. It's certainly a complex and interesting situation for sure.
Just when I thought she **might** be presenting a closing argument that slightly resembled redemption during the first few moments, she goes and talks about her son’s bits and pieces.
I’m floored and feeling really bad for her child!!! She not only admitted “ he was an oopsie baby! I didn’t want 4 kids in 4 years “ but she is talking about his “bits and pieces “!!! How unbelievably disgusting and unprofessional!
Stopped at 20 min in. This lawyer has a disorganized approach. Im guessing JC emotionally bonded with her, and therefore trusts her representation. Big Mistake!
Sadly in high profile criminal cases many defense attorneys are primarily preoccupied with advancing their career. It just so happens that getting their client off and making a spectacle out of the trial aligns with career growth for them so it's normally not seen as a problem so long as the attorney isn't breaking the unspoken (but obvious) rules regarding how you present your case. For the most part I thought the defense had a decent closing statement, but I think it was a totally absurd unforced error to spend nearly 10 minutes having the lead defense attorney defending herself lol. She figured out a way to tie it back into the case, but spending THAT long on it makes it pretty obvious that she was bothered by her own public perception, and that's just a terrible look since it shifts the focus onto a person who Shannon Smith herself said "doesn't matter" for the purposes of judging her clients guilt

This closing argument is basically her saying... here are all the signs of deeply disturbed child and client on the run, but... It's someone elses problem, not hers. @@therealrobcgeneralofthe501st I get your outrage. Totally justified. A lot of people should never become parents, but they do. If we arrested all parents of drug dealers (many of whom are good parents) and all the parents of criminals of every kind, our judicial system would literally implode on itself, and we couldn’t build enough prisons to house them. Best we not take that route. Besides, it won’t deter other parents from neglecting all the needs of every child they bear or adopt. Where does this stop? And just so you know, teenage kids are not legally, morally or spiritually “extensions of their parents.”
@@Jack-eo5fn first of all I'm not saying the parent should go to prison if their kids sell drugs but should have to pay some kind of retribution for not being able to raise a decent human we live in the age of information people shouldn't use ignorance as an excuse anymore and secondly it would deter people from having kids and neglecting, not only them but the signs they need help, if they would be held to some higher standards of responsibility other than just keeping them alive, maybe keeping them from breaking the law should be added to that standard of parenting and should be law
@@therealrobcgeneralofthe501st, interesting. So who exactly decides which parent gets retribution, and how much restitution and what kind? Our judicial system could never function under that weight. Violent criminals would never get to court bc the system would be backlogged with lawyers of alleged bad parents waiting to defend their clients. As to “living in an age of information” are you aware that 50% of that information is fake, or poisoned? So this “information” doesn’t actually inform parents. Parents depend and trust only the sources they choose for their “information.” That’s a problem. So how do you take them to court, or assign monetary retribution, for simply believing the lies they thought was “information?”
@@1110karin She sure did prove a point. She proved that lawyers are really good at creating a distraction, even in a child murder case. Even in one in which four children were murdered n cold blood, two getting their brains blown out at point blank range, by a shooter with a 9mm Sig Sauer, that his parents bought him after his research showed that it would be the best weapon to use for 'shooting up the school '. She proved that even with the victim's families in the courtroom, she could get into people's heads and make them think that it's not the shooting of children that really mattered , it's all the parents in the world who are afraid of going to jail because their child used the gun they bought him to slaughter children in a school.
This mother showed zero remorse while on the stand. In fact she doubled down on her reasoning claiming she wouldn’t do anything different which is shocking considering the evidence. The parents negligence in this case is extreme and unlike any other mass shooting. They need to set a precedence w this case, it’s a cautionary tale for other parents like her. She could not be bothered w the needs of her son, who was pleading with her to help him and instead of being concerned and attentive she was annoyed and distracted. She proved to be woefully out of touch w her son and gun safety. The impact of her ignorant behavior left kids murdered in their classroom. It’s unforgivable. Her negligence is obvious and egregious and she needs to be held liable for the part she played in the murder of those kids.

I’ve never seen so many interruptions to a closing argument! Crap. This defense lawyer never paid attention in school. Is she from the Alina Habba school of law? Talking about lowering the bar. 😂
The defense attorney needs to grow up. She did a whole lot of whining, appeared ill prepared and her organizational skills need work. These parents didn't engage enough to see what was going on in their son's life. If they felt it was okay to buy this boy a weapon they, not just he needed to be 'hypervigilant' about keeping the weapon and ammo under lock and key. Why wouldn't they have used the lock mechanism? No parent does everything right but this is blatant neglect. The day the parents met at the school the counselor clearly said he wanted Ethan to be seen that day. That got blown off because they HAD to go back to work. We did hear later on there were places that would have seen him that day. In a nutshell parents did what appeared to be providing a great life. What most people didn't see was what they didn't provide for their son. This boy was in trouble and it didn't happen overnight. They seemed to live their lives and didn't make room for him.
I have been astonished by the Wild West vibe of this trial, but now looking at all the lawyers I think these are some really exhausted people tbh. I hope they get some rest cause I have never seen anything like this in any trial.
Did the defense attorney basically just tell the jury that the public thinks she’s guilty….right before they’re about to deliberate? If the jury isn’t supposed to research anything on the case, I’d think that a lawyer telling the jury what ppl are saying on social media can’t be good. Not to mention a terrible tactic for the defense.
Great point! I know the jury isn't allowed to look up the case etc.. I just don't understand why this attorney thought it was a good idea to mention social media and using her family and daily life were strong points to make her defendant appear not guilty!?!?
Totally! The school counselor and disciplinarian have had years of training and did NOT make their concern known to the parents of how serious they felt this was( I don’t think they were that alarmed), as demonstrated by a ten minute conference with their child in the room. They didn’t speak with the parents alone to express what Ethan’s teacher had brought up to them. I did not like the counselor or find him professional, concerned, or effective, not to mention personal. I do think the school bears some responsibility for this too.
Did you watch this trial? The parents didn't tell the school he was depressed, hallucinating, and that he had access to a gun... Had they known all of this info, things would have been different. Why didn't the parents check their son's backpack?? The dad knew Ethan was the sho*ter immediately and rushed home to look for the gun... Yet, he didn't think to check that day at the school? Why are you expecting the school do more than the parents?? Why are you expecting the school to be clairvoyant when it was the parent's job to paint the full picture and DO SOMETHING.
I blame the school administration as well. The teacher wanted the child to get help and the parents refused and the school administration agreed with the parents. The teacher that was concerned is the real hero, she cared and no one listened.
@@ashleypg1708While I agree that the parents’ could have prevented this horrible tragedy, the school bears some responsibility too. There were many signs, as brought out at trial, that Ethan had a fascination with guns and violence. At the meeting with the parents, counselors were told that shooting was his “hobby” and that both Mom and Ethan had been to the gun range the previous weekend. It was known that he had access to a gun and knew how to use it. That backpack should have been checked! I taught at schools where even drawing a gun or holding thumb and index finger in the position of a gun would be immediate suspension even for elementary school kids. At one middle school I taught at in Michigan, all backpacks had to be see through.
From day 1, I have put blame on the school counselors… yes the kid had no discipline problems but the fact they didn’t even through his backpack is beyond forgiveness
The school should be held accountable as well! The culture of the school blew my mind. Children are allowed to take pictures with guns. A lot of things need to be changed for sure regarding the school culture.
Is this attorney new or something? I know everything about HER life, her kitchen island, her "OOPSIE" accident child, her other online gaming addicted child that she doesn't have time to monitor, the fact she doesn't shower and slaps a wipe on her morning stink and puts make up on while driving to work to hide the funk but in case she murders someone or her children do, we will know she's a real person. 20 plus min in and still not much about the defendant 🥴 The attorney also wants us to know she refuses to call her begging kids back just because she thinks they all want cokes from McDs BUT she will get herself one but she's not about to buy them one who she hardly ever sees or talks to either evidently 😢
Don't forget her convo with her hubby regarding their Halloween and xmas decorations are still up lol Oh and how she rather watches the Kardashians than do her laundry and clean the house... 😅
Children of amazing parents can do unthinkable things. That does not mean society should tolerate and excuse horrible, cruel, criminal (buying a minor a gun is against the law), indifferent parents who deny their children basic care when they are showing clear signs of psychosis and go even further to provide them with the means and the opportunity to do unthinkable things.
In her opening statement she quoted Taylor Swift "bandaids don't fix bullet holes" forgetting the next line is "you'll say sorry just for show".... that's all this is. For show. They don't care; they just feel bad they're lives were also ruined by losing their house and things. Don't even care they lost their son to prison.
I don't see that buying him a gun is the problem it's they didn't keep it secure, so it could only be used with his parents at the range. The problem is the fact that they completely ignored all the signs.

So glad this lawyer taught me what types of rhetoric to avoid and how not to act in a courtroom, as someone on track to go to law school in a few short years this is incredibly educational and I thank you.
yes, I'm sure you have a long list of what not to do
I’m in high school but I want to go into law. This attorney was torture to listen to. The whining, hissy fits, tantrums…..it was awful
Well done. You should look to Juan Martinez if you're going to choose to be a prosecutor. Or Camille Vasquez if your going to be a PD.
I disagree, she’s trying to point out that anyone of us could be in the Crumley’s position. I do not care for the Crumley’s at all, however he’s had NO history of mental illness. She was getting him counseling.
I’m actually seriously worried about her as a person at this point. I hope she’s ok, but this trial was unhinged, largely because of her…
@@redrose41000when ? After he killed 4 people? She should have listened when he told her Mom I love you. That was a red flag. She ignored it. The red flags were there earlier but she ignored it. She bought him a gun instead of having a real good conversation. Did she really thought this was helping him?
Her comments about the lack of evidence of mental health concerns, thats because SHE DIDNT CARE enough to spend quality time with him to understand his struggles.
Her attorney talks about herself more than anything else too
This case leads me to ponder:
Perhaps if parents are on the line for culpability, we would have a better society. Actions would be taken to cover all tracks. When you do everything you can and beyond, it shows. When you don’t, well, here you have it!😞
Nobody's talking about the United States gun loving culture!😢
Why does she keep talking about social media when its SO OFF LIMITS to a jury. ? This is insane

I feel like she is trying to get a mistrial. This is the oddest representation.
And you can tell Shannon is paying a lot of attention to what social media is saying…
She’s all up in her FEE-FEES over those TikTok videos😂😂😂😂
people make tiktok’s about everything now and it’s ignorant. shows how far we’ve come as a society.
100% true!!!
I’m almost embarrassed for her!!! Worst defense attorney I’ve ever seen and I was a paralegal for 20yrs and my late brother was a prosecuting attorney!! I’ve also never seen a more worthless judge who let a defense lawyer get away with running their court room!!
Parents should 💯 look through their kid's phones, computers, IPad and who their children are hanging with.

Why is the closing argument mostly about the lawyer?? 🤔
So sorry.
What proof do we have that he asked his parents for help??
This closing argument was unwatchable.
The defense lawyer is unforgetable😂😂
This closing argument is un-freaking-believable. There are no words to adequately describe it. But unwatchable works for me. Aargh!

The defense laywer is unforgettable
She is litterally defending herself against the internet and telling the jury what is being said on the internet. Doesn't the jury have clear instructions not to look at news or the internet pertaining to the case?
Does this Defense realise how absolutely embarrassing this is? This is the worst closing statement. She's making it all about herself. Even if she had a good point about certain things it's lost on the fact that she talked all about herself, talked about embarrassing things, made herself sound like a complete wack job. 🙄😬

Pretty sure her career and her client are both going going to be screwed after this bizarro closing argument.
The Tik Toks did it for me
BOTH
Sadly in high profile criminal cases many defense attorneys are primarily preoccupied with advancing their career.

No she was explaining how normal life can go so you are all saying you guys don't joke around with your kids and your spouse's you're telling me that your house ain't messy at times because you get too busy with you full-time job and being a parent and taking care of your responsibilities so you're telling me that a 15 year old can't stay home by there Self without supervision and also a lot of parents don't go through their kids cell phones if they're responsible kids also the gun was bought from his father in his father's name so therefore his father has the responsibility of keeping that gun locked at all times and it's not on the mother because it's not in the mother's name it's in the father's that's a responsibility you get when you buy a weapon and put it in your name so no the mother should not be responsible for that weapon that his father bought and they never said it was bought for him it was bought for them to use on the gun range as a family. Also last I knew a child could go out hunting at the age of 14 and older with the parents so no I don't feel she's guilty of manslaughter that's kinda harsh especially when her son already pleaded guilty and has life in prison. The school should be more responsible and the school should have sent him home but they got on stand and said they didn't feel it was a need to send him home.
@@aprilbrinkman7343 well, maybe but I can tell you this if you read the comments, I kind of make sense
I’ve never seen so many interruptions to a closing argument! Crap. This defense lawyer never paid attention in school. Is she from the Alina Habba school of law? Talking about lowering the bar. 😂
Omg this attorney is awful 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Shannon did not surprise with her closing argument. I would be worried if I were JC.
My mouth fell open when the defense attorney said she puts on her makeup while DRIVING 😮
I couldn't believe it either
This defense attorney needs to be disbarred
Worst defense attorney on planet Earth.
I hope she doesn't cause a mistrial
This lawyer is a fing joke
You know she’s reading this and you’re gonna hurt her Fee-Fees right😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have been astonished by the Wild West vibe of this trial, but now looking at all the lawyers I think these are some really exhausted people tbh. I hope they get some rest cause I have never seen anything like this in any trial.
Who let her out of Law School? Take her degree back!
Immediately
Bringing up memes...seriously?
Lol she so bad it’s actually hilarious, ruthlessly embarrassing her kids 😂
She represented Larry Nasser and he got 60 years
I don't think she was the lead lawyer thou!
Worst defense lawyer and judge I have ever watched.
The school did tell them ..they are ignorant parents
Why didn’t they search the bag. If they had searched, things would be different now.
Worst closing ever. Me me me me me me me…,
A kid taking a knife from a butcher block is completely different than buying & teaching your kid how to use a gun.
Plus her son who loves to skateboard now knows she’d “rather be anywhere else” than watching him! Unbelievable
Don't forget her convo with her hubby regarding their Halloween and xmas decorations are still up lol Oh and how she rather watches the Kardashians than do her laundry and clean the house... 😅
this attorney is so cringe and I'm cringing writing about how cringe she is. I hate that she's done this to me.
She is way out of her league! Unbelievable attorney! Never seen one like this before
acknowledges people told her she’s mispronouncing cache and continuing to pronounce it wrong. why?
Who cares!!!
Jennifer is showing sadness in her own way…the way a narcissist shows sadness.
The defense attorney has made this trial about herself.
So much more she could have said in this woman's defense.
She needs a different job.
This defense attorney is so bad she makes Amber Heard’s attorneys look good 🙃😵💫
I don't see that buying him a gun is the problem it's they didn't keep it secure, so it could only be used with his parents at the range. The problem is the fact that they completely ignored all the signs.
My lord. Who is talking about sexting in this case!? This woman is seriously ridiculous.
And that’s how the cookie crumbles…. She is grossly guilty
Crumbley stated looking back now she still wouldn't have changed anything. So why is her attorney speaking on hindsight.
