  • NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. This talk contains sweeping claims around advanced glycation end products which are still an emerging field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
    As far as most people know, “AGEs” has more to do with how old you are than the toxic metabolites quickly taking years off our lives. And worse, with current diets and behaviors known to be true of Western lifestyles, it offers a grim outlook for the health and life span of today’s youth. For scientist Dr. David Turner, this perpetuation of lifestyle-related chronic diseases must stop if we have any hope of slowing down the accumulation of AGEs causing destruction in our bodies.
    A research scientist and professor at MUSC, Dr. David Turner has spent the last 20 years examining the biological consequences and life expectancy of lifestyle habits. With a focus on advanced glycation end products (AGEs), his philosophy about his work is that “knowledge gained in the laboratory is far more effective if understood by lay audiences” - the influencing factor for his passion of community outreach. Originally from England, Dr. Turner now enjoys Charleston and its unique wildlife and environment with his wife, six children and three grandchildren. What you don’t know might kill you, which is why this research scientist and professor is determined to make AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) a household name. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Suggested dosage
      The optimal dose range of acetyl-L-carnitine for healthy people is 1000 mg to 2000 mg day. Those with neurological deficit should consider 3000 mg a day. Synergistic nutrients that could be taken with acetyl-L-carnitine include coenzyme Q10 (100-300 mg/day) and alpha lipoic acid (250-500 mg/day).

    This guy's left out the fact that AGE is a process that can happen _inside your own body_ and involves excessive dietary sugar binding with amino acids (protein). This is why AGE is such a big problem with diabetics who have poor blood sugar control/ high sugar intake. It's not because they are eating lots of browned meat - if only they were! It's because they are/have been eating lots of _sugar_ which btw also includes _carbohydrate._
    I'm not sure how much of these exogenous AGEs are actually absorbed, and how much gets ripped apart by stomach acids anyway, but if you kick sugar out of your diet then you probably don't need to worry if your steak is a bit well done or if you have bacon once a week.

      If I recall correctly, antioxidants actually reverse some of the oxidative damage done by AGEs… so whole plant foods (which have tons of antioxidants) would actually help prevent AGEs from doing excessive damage.
      Also you’re right: AGEs can be formed in the body. But the MAJORITY of AGEs we accumulate in our bodies are from our diet! So it’s probably more important to focus on that, if possible!
      Plant based diets are also proven time and time again to increase longevity.

      raw meats in general are already high in ages but cooking increased the age in meats by 15 to 20 times more.... the crispier the bacon /meat the more ages it has. an acidic marinade does reduce age formation by half BUT it is still high in ages.. same with cooked/overcooked vegetables , tho not as severe as meat.

    I don't totally agree with everything. First of all, our body is going to be old anyway. The functioning of cells is dying since we are born and the problem is that later the body produce less cell. We are all going to die (especially now with global warming)
    Secondly, this recommendation is unbearable even for prehistorics who were grilling food. I mean that doesn't help at all to have this number or just to make us freak out.
    The only good vibe in this Ted is the idea of having more control on what we eat and know better the calorie amount.
    That could help for having a better health, even if it doesn't exclude illness.
    The last word, we should profit of our life 100% beside thinking how we will get older.
    It doesn't make sense to freak out all the life for something natural.

  • @duhbead
    @duhbead Před 4 měsíci

    I'm sorry but this is quite a bad presentation. You should have gone deeper, explaining the mechanism and differentiating between glycation, glycosylation, and sialylation. And there is an important distinction between AGE's which have formed on your foods and AGE's which have formed from ingested sugar molecules and the proteins and lipids within your own body! It is much more problematic if a sugar molecule has binded to a receptor on your cell disrupting the interaction between a hormone and the receptor (type 2 diabetes), than if you are already consuming an AGE formed on a steak.
