    Timo Boll has enjoyed an illustrious career - he's the most accomplished player in European Championships history. However, he has never won a gold at the World Championships. In this video, we look back at his opponents and journey through the WTTC singles events from 1997 to 2021.

    His 2021 performence was really good! Sadly he was injured, without it he would have beaten truls and probably lose the final. (silver medal) Timo is a legend. He might get injured often and his form drops a lot but in form he is still really solid.

    Werner Schlager, last european world champion 2003👍👍 He deserves credit too. Beat Wang Liqin, Kong Linghui at the same tournament 🏆🏆

    Boll is massively respected in China. Although he is not as decorated as the top Chinese players of the last few generations, most Chinese pingpong fans would consider him an equal, obviously for his consistent top level performance against the crazy talented Chinese players in all kinds of competitions.

    I think if Timo did not have a walkover against Jang Woojin in 2019 he could have made his first World Championship final or at least a bronze medal that year

      He had to forfeit vs Jang Woojin because of an Injury and 2019 had many upsets including a lot of Chinese Players losing.
      Very clear path to the finals for Timo since he would have only faced players he never lost to until then and he was also playing very well until the injury.

    • @balazsdud
      @balazsdud Před rokem +2

      @@sylvcast9948 It was sickness with high fever, not an injury, but the same result - Timo withdrew. I agree he had a really good chance to make the final. There were not a lot of Chinese players losing, Xu Xin was the only one losign to a foreigner (Simon Gauzy, in of the best matches of the tournament), but he was the only Chinese on that side of the draw.

    And in Olympics, Timo boll lost to non-chinese players.
    Sydney Olympics 2000, lost to Werner Schlager.
    Athene Olympics 2004, lost to Waldner.
    Beijing Olympics 2008, lost to oh sang eun.
    London Olympics 2012, lost to Adrian Crisan.
    Rio Olympics 2016, lost to Aruna Quadri.
    Tokyo Olympics 2020, lost to Jeoung Yongsik.
    what a legend.

    2021 was particularly annoying. A fit Timo Boll straining all his skill and tactical ingenuity to claim a set off FZD, would have been a much better final than the one-side massacre we got because Moregard, rather luckily, beat an injured Boll in the semi.

      @@rizki1104 The time he beat Ma Long was interesting: shortly before in June 2017, LGL was just fired from the post of CNT head coach by an upper official, so the entire CNT team went on strike - they did not show up for a tournament in Chengdu China, and Ma Long was not 100% mentally playing at the World Cup.

    Why you only show the results and don't analyse the problem like you say in your title?

    • @TableTennisMedia
      @TableTennisMedia  Před rokem +2

      Because in this case, results are pretty much explanatory. Young Boll was not good enough to do wonders. In his prime, Boll chocked a few times against lower-ranked players, and as he got older, the Chinese became way too strong to compete against them. World Championships simply wasn't his tournament, it seems. As someone wrote before, he lacked that wolf mentality to win the gold.

    Today timo boll plays far better than young timo but today Chinese even was stronger than Waldner era that why he never get grand slam titles.
    If timo could play today level when he was young age may be he can win grand slam title for sure .

    • @SuperHammaren
      @SuperHammaren Před rokem +1

      Waldner was a better player, he lead the development something Boll never did. He also had a stronger team around him (Persson, Appelgren, Lindh, Karlsson). Players need develop and be better, see Waldner in 81 and compare with 2000 or 2004.. You have to!

    • @dickn.ormous1064
      @dickn.ormous1064 Před rokem

      Really?Boll who struggled to players like Crisan and Oh Sang Eun was stronger than Waldner?
      He beat the Chinese in smaller tournaments mostly because he is a lefty just like his model Rosskopf who was equally irrelevant at the WTTC.
      Maze who had the most terrible technique ever beat Wang Hao at the WTTC.
      Shows how much advantage lefties had over penholders.
      If Boll plays better than his younger self did(which he doesn't) it only shows that he was badly coached and lost his best years.
      It's not like Germany didn't invest massively with the Bundesliga to lift the level of their players since the 80's.

      Sure, blame everything on the Chinese!

    • @xx765
      @xx765 Před rokem +3

      Except bigger balls were brought in to handicap Chinese players. Small balls are super fast and spinny, great for Chinese players with extremely thorough training. Before the change guys like Liu Guoliang was doing these crazy tricky serves so every point ended in 1 second. It's more difficult to effectively put spin on bigger balls for Chinese players who are typically shorter/less strong comparing to their European counterparts.

    • @user-zz5yt8jl9u
      @user-zz5yt8jl9u Před rokem +1

      You got it backwards -- the big ball was introduced to slow down the ball speed, which the Chinese players were good at.
