When I was 13 playing on a county level, I would model my back hand loop on Gruber. In all honesty all we had were a few pictures from library books. Nevertheless, it’s amazing how a young kid can learn so much from still pictures. Needless to say my backhand loop would shock under 18 county players too. Bygone days.

2021 was particularly annoying. A fit Timo Boll straining all his skill and tactical ingenuity to claim a set off FZD, would have been a much better final than the one-side massacre we got because Moregard, rather luckily, beat an injured Boll in the semi.

I have learnd some basic stuff.. start to train with 22 years and implement that fh close to body, 90 angle, almost straight hand, elbow goes high, blade goes high forward in front of face.. body movement, left hand movment.. thats it.. i felt it realy gave me stability and my fh become constant.. backhend is from zhang jike

Alan Hyde was a top England player around Desmond’s time. I played with his brother for years. He told me that Desmond learnt to play in a club with virtually no space behind the table, and therefore why he was so quick and stayed up. Not sure if this was apocryphal but straight from Alan, who I knocked up with a few times.
