- Taxi first then take off at 1:45 so if you don't want to hear the awesome sound of the TF-39s then skip to the take off. C-5 Galaxy is the largest jet engine powered cargo plane to ever come out of the USA. AN-225 vid is here: • Worlds biggest Antonov...

As a retired Marine jet engine maintainer, I have to say the C-5 has some of THE best engine sounds at military power.
The sound of the engine .. simply amazing !
Hey bro how are you
Indeed
I was a crew chief on C-5's, I miss those days and the sound of those TF-39's. I can tell you watching this video, that was a very light load on that C-5. Awesome take off
@Robert H, well said ! C-5 Crew Chief here also... hahaha
Now that was impressive. Seeing the C-5 take off in so short a distance.
I'm still amazed at how quickly these planes can get off the ground. Mid-range airliners usually roll for about twenty seconds before they lift off, but it seems like C-5's are up in the air before they really get moving down the runway. Very impressive!
amazing with wings that size. love the sound of those engines
i live close to an airport and its mindblowing just seeing one of these sit. if u can ever get the chance to see one take off u will remember it for the rest of your life!
DAMN!! That thing was SCREAMING! I didn't expect it to get off the ground that fast. That's seriously impressive!
It was probably very light.
I've ridden on C5A's several times. Sitting way up on the top deck, facing the rear, you really get the feeling of the thrust. What a great plane it is.
Look at that majestic beast!
The C5 howling engines are music to my ears. 👌🏾
Fantastic! Great photography! I will never cease to be amazed by this very special airplane. I rate it right up there with the SR-71 Blackbird as far as being totally awesome!
Those TF39 s are music to my ears... so lucky I saw one with the old engines a couple of years ago during takeoff!!
Awesome airplane ! I was fortunate to walk inside this huge beast!
Can't believe how it got off the ground,!!!
The sound of a C-5 taking off or landing was the soundtrack of my childhood. My dad was a Flight Engineer. We were in Charleston when they first rolled out then followed them to Dover a few years later..
love the sound of those man! Even in idle.
I remember flying on several C-5s(some C-130s & C-141s) as a kid traveling from Yokota AFB, Clark AFB, Kadena AFB, Hickam AFB & Travis AFB from the early 1980s & 1990s while my dad was in active duty(Ret. USN). Had to climb up the stairs to our seats, the flight crew gave us ear plugs and a blanket, because it was really cold in the cabin. Even had the opportunity to go to the cockpit and watch the pilots operate the plane. Had lots of memories in the Military life.
I have goosebumps too! That thing is powerful! I can only imagine what it sounds like in person!
I live near Stewart AFB and will NEVER get used to the sight and sound of this aircraft overhead - simultaneously beautiful and terrifying.
The glory days, when she sounded awesome. How I miss that sound.
I saw one in the air right after take off this week. It's weird because they are moving so slowly and they are so big, in the mind's eye it looks like it should fall out of the sky at any moment.
Wow!!! Take off inside the "touchdown landing zone" yet!!! Fantastic!
Once I saw a C-5 take off before my very eyes in Dover, DE. Pretty much started moving and soon as that lifted off the ground. Incredible feat how it does that.
that thing looked like it was only doing 80mph when it left the ground. amazing it could get any lift
It can take off around 75mph empty.
That noise is like a symphony! Amazing!
Love these Bad boys, truly an amazing beast, Flown on 2 of these while int he Army, loaded with 3 Blackhawks one time and 6 Blackhawks the 2nd.
Hope they didnt peck your eyes out. :op
This has always been my favorite-sounding plane. I LOVE that engine sound. Whistle combined with the vibrations.
I was stationed near Ramstein AB, and to watch one of these take off is incredible. They appear to be so seemingly slow at take off. It looks as though it's going to just fall right out the air. This is one Amazing Aircraft!
that has GOT to be empty
...and definitely low on fuel.
+MrOverfloater I did not expect you here.
+MrOverfloater I mean seriously!
They and many other US Military birds are well know for taking off with a low fuel load and refueling to top off so that cargo can be maxed out. Summertime or hot climates also as the air isn't thick enough to allow it to grab the sky.
I saw the words Short Take Off and C-5 Galaxy in the same sentence and had to see this video... Nothin' short or STOL about a C5 hahahah.
Edit: mind officially blown...
Aaron Thompson
The sound of the engines revving up for takeoff was beautiful
Cool blow in doors on engines
Very unique sound that is so recognizable!
It sure take some time to retract the gear on this beast.
monte61 not really, hydraulics works magic. The size of it doesn't really matter
Re-engined C-5M can takeoff in about 1200 feet. CF-6 engines put out MUCH more thrust...and quieter. ;)
The engines put out so much thrust they had to be reduced for the M. If they didn't do that the structural integrity of the pylon's which hold the engines would be negated. And could possibly be torn from the airplane with so much thrust.
The old engines sound way more epic though
those engines, god damn, such a iconic sound. thats what i think of when i think of turbofan
Holy shit. Didn't look like it was going fast enough. Those wings must produce and insane amount of lift at low velocity.
This is in Scotland
Runway 30, Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire, Scotland.
russia copied this
Yes, the usual copying
That was awesome. Thanks for posting that.
Looking at the fixed distance markers on the runway, rotation started at 2000 feet and the aircraft was airborne just before 2500 feet.
A short take off and a very long boring taxi to the runway!
Stormkicker1 If you're an aviation enthusiast you wouldn't find the taxiing boring... it has an amazing idling sound as well as full throttle sound.
is c5 bigger than a380
yeah, sure is, only by 3 meteres though
It is only bigger in length, the A380's still have a bigger wingspan and bigger payload.
+Corbin Aalderts and is NOT made in USA.
+Sushma Nomula The C5 is a slightly longer than the Soviet An-124, but the An-124 has more powerful engines, larger wingspan and also has a bigger max payload. The A380 is bigger, and the An-225 beats even the A380.
+Itapirkanmaa2 they only have one an 125 while the USA has many c5 s
One of the wonders of aviation to behold.
This video is so deceptive. It makes it look much smaller of an airframe than what it is. It's such a monster plane, and just amazing to see in person on take-off. I used to work at WR-ALC and got on the tail of one once, and was super impressed with just how high it was. Getting on the flight line and in the hangers was the highlight of my days out there.
Gosh, the sound of those engines spooling up is BEAUTIFUL!!
the C-5 sounds downright apocalyptic!!! awesome
It is a mashup of Godzilla and a banshee...
She can scream!! Damn I can't imagine being the pilot and lifting that thing off the ground. The power in those engines looks amazing.
1992 I was stationed in Rota, Spain. I was snorkling in shallow water a few miles from the runway. The water began to shake as if there was an earthquake. I came up, looked up, a C5 was coming in for a landing. The power of that plane is tremendous.
Wow, I dk why my CZcams recommended this video, or why I even watched it for that matter. But that was incredible. Really makes you think how amazing the human mind is...
one of them was in milwaukee wis. the other day....really weird,we heard it at my hosue about a mile away and went to go watch it...AWESOME
Excellent video, great sound! Love those screaming engines!
here here/we rode on one from somalia straight to dover AFB/the constant pitch of those engines was hipnotic
Used to watch these taxi right by me at Mildenhall AFB. Massive jet.
I just had one of these buzz my highschool on friday. At first i thought it was a globemaster III, but it sounded different, and sure enough upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a C5. they are pretty monsterous. its hilarious how far their wings droop when not in the skies.
I used to listen for these in Norfolk. You could pick up that cavitating sound like a buzzing from the engines when the thing was still out of sight. They looked like blimps on their approach because they were so huge it fooled your sense of perspective into thinking they weren't moving. Lovely. Amazing what the US military can do.
I just realized this was posted on 2006... 1 year before i was born
Youngen 😁
i lived 1 mile away from an airforce base when the gulf war started when i was a kid, and i got woken up at 3am in the morning to the sound of and counted 40+ c5's taking off one after the other heading for the middle east. such an awesome sound.
@LoveAviation You definately didnt waste my time. Thanks for taking the time to post this video. MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!! Shame you can't please everyone.
20 Second take off time, wow i love the sound of the GE CF6's !
This is TF39, CF6's father. The CF6-fired C5M has a better climb rate
This is an ‘A’ model, so it has the original TF-39’s. There’s not another engine around that sounds like them.
Great footage. Very very impresive, in the air in 20s!
Years ago i used to work making deliveries and i had quite a lot of them at kennedy airport in nyc and i seen and heard concorde take off and it was the loudest of any other plane. once you hear it a few times you know that a comcorde is taking off just by its very loud sound. and the difference with concorde is that you hear it for a good while after it takes off but with the c5 it is much quieter as it gets farther.
I have seen duzends of C-5 taking of at Frankfurt and later at Ramstein Airbase Germany, but this one realy is amazing.
Good job !
I love that sound
C-5 Crew Chief Dover AFB 1996-2000
I miss these things so much. Best cargo jet ever made. Period.
Ahhhhh....back when a C5 sounded like a C5! Miss those days with old engines.
Hell yeah they do, i was stationed in Aviano,Italy as an F-16 fighter jet mechanic and almost every time they landed on our base they broke down. One time this C-5 crew stayed for almost 3 weeks to try to wait for parts. They sound bad ass when they take off though
I wonder if GE intended for those engines to sound that awesome . 😎
Awesome airplane!!! Great engine sound
This was taken on my birthday!
the C5 still has the sweetest sound of any airplane!
Have u ever heard a Spitfire's Merlin V12 ?
RAF Vulcan sounds cool too.
When I worked on the flight line I could tell when a C5 was taking off or landing based just on the eerie noise they produced. I eerie because it normally popped through the clouds out of no where ha ha. I miss the Air Force.
Nah, the A10 has them all beat, especially if it fires its gun.
love the sound of the engins
great vid
You can tell a Galaxy from any other aircraft...that sound is definitely a unique one.
Used to love going out to see the C-5s in the late 90s at Prestwick when there would be at least 3 sitting up the back runway. Awesome noise off them.
Never seen one go up that quick though
What a beautiful noise that ship makes!
Awesome plane! 👍✈️
amazing video!
Damn that's crazy but at the same time amazing. Something so big get off the ground that fast. Fascinating. This plane is the engineering marvel.
Amazing sound.
i seen one of these at miramar today. was talking to the pilots about the reverse thrust. they could use it in the air for rapid descent. amazing
Used to fly in one, played sports on the main deck when litely loaded, huge!
1:49, that sound is so gorgeous.
Beautiful it goes way faster in real life though !
Beautiful footage
that loud screaming sound of the engines firing is the coolest sound!!
@LoveAviation ignore him..this is awesome footage of an amazing beautiful aircraft. thank you!
Beautiful and powerful...!
Nice sound in the beginning
One word....
AMAZING...
I used to watch these guys at KIWA when I was there. They get off and get on shorter than our Seminoles did!
my god that is impressive. Some thing that massive can take off that quick.
at Lackland AFB, on the old Kelly side is the 433rd Air Mobility Command and i love watching them take off and fly
I was at band practice today. And our drumline is out there warming up.. and were loud. I mean LOUD!!
And As we're playing, All I hear is this roaring whining engine over our heads I mean, It must've been only a few hundred feet over our heads. I almost cried I love the galaxy so much. :)
Great sounds from those TF 39 engines.
Note open blow in engine doors.
Beautiful plane...
Video doesn't do this justice. I'm not trying to sound corny but the shrieking whistle and rumbling growl of a C5 is astounding. It is one of the most distinct sounds in aviation.
The Antonov has 6 engines, however only one of those planes was ever made. The C 5 is smaller, however it's still a magestic sight to see. If you're ever in Dover, DE, come take a look at a touch and go. Nothing is better!
I went in one of those, they're huge!!
They should call these planes: the sky ballerinas, I've seen them do extreme take off and landings, they're so much fun to watch.
One of the greatest take off's ever!
Sweet, my dad was SAC in Altus,Ok Crew Chief B-52 and Kc-135 from1970-76. I know what you mean about going outside, I live in Lawton, OK next to Ft. Sill when the C-130s come to play I waist my day watching them.
Wow. What a monster and with power.
